Do It Anyway

  • QIC: CSPAN and Double D
  • When: 01/15/16

  • Posted In: The Swamp

The Swamp was a popular spot, with 26 pax posting, comprised of 10 Ruckers and 16 Boot Campers.  CSPAN rolled in hot 30 secs before launch, ran through the preliminaries and then handed off to Cobra Kai for a prelude based on the “Do It Anyway” message from Mother Teresa.  Since she posted in spirit only and not in person, no F3 principles were violated.  Having appropriately challenged the pax spiritually, Cobra Kai and CSPAN rolled out for the physical challenge portion of the morning.

Naked Man Moleskin

Welcome to FNG/Stockade, who posted for the Ruck portion of the adventure.

Thoughts and prayers for Fun House who is battling herniated disks in his back.  Hope the recovery time is shorter than initial indications.

Lots of mumblechatter about the Target balls.  Sounds like a crowd favorite…with limited time left for YHC’s portion, BTW at Marshall’s had to suffice as a proxy.

YHC mistook Barry Manilow for Paula Dean while faced upside down.  One sings, one cooks/eats, they both sweat…what else can I say?

T-claps to Cable Guy who is clearly providing great leadership based on the spirit and attendance at The Swamp.  Look forward to having CG back in the gloom soon!

Thanks to CSPAN for inviting me out to join in on the fun.  Always an honor to lead.

Conditions were better than expected with overcast and cold at 40 degrees

Started with a BOM and Disclaimer = I am not a professional

Quick discussion on the momentum built @F3Gastonia and how quickly they are building from “Nomad” to “Region”

Q101 (disclosure- this doc is plagiarized with all credit going to others):

PHILOSOPHY

Q – Pax Relationship: The unspoken social contract between the Pax and a Q: “We will follow until you give us a reason not to”. The Pax are very forgiving toward a new Q. Most have been through it and understand the anxiety.

PREPARATION

Considerations for the first few Qs:

  1. Launch a quick grenade over twitter, let local Pax know that this is your VQ, most F3 vets enjoy being part of a VQ Pax.
  2. Simplicity/Complexity and Originality
    1. Keep the Weinke simple. The fewer moving parts the better. Many first-time Q Weinke’s are too complicated.
    2. Keep it familiar. New exercises or sets that require more than the briefest of explanations usually lead to confusion.
    3. Don’t be shy about stealing a Weinke, or parts of a Weinke, from another more-experienced Q.

  1. Go with strengths: “Don’t Q it if you can’t do it.”

  1. Cadence Counting – PRACTICE THIS, OUT LOUD, BEFORE FIRST Q
    1. Next exercise is [brief pause], the merkin.
  • The Pax then repeats the exercise called.
  • Speak loudly so all Pax can hear. You are in charge.
    1. Start(ing) position [brief pause],
  • Not “exercise” position. Start position.
  • The “Move” is to get the Pax to the position required to begin exercise. The “Move” is not a command to begin exercising.
    1. In cadence [brief pause],
  • In cadence simply means the Q counts the movements (1-2-3) and the Pax calls out the repetitions in unison (“One!”).
  • The Q counts should correspond to a distinct movement in the exercise. It is in rhythm. For example, for a merkin: “1” is the movement to the down position, “2” is the movement to the plank position, “3” is the movement back to the down position, the Pax call of “One!” is the move back to plank position.
  • The Q indicates the completion of an exercise by a higher inflection on his last repetition.

See OBT & Dredd’s excellent tutorial on the how and why of cadence counting: http://f3nation.com/2012/02/22/f3-tv-how-to-count/

NOTE: When a Q does not lead an exercise in cadence that would normally be done that way, he is giving away his authority to lead the Pax. He is implicitly telling the Pax that he not able to count in cadence or is not willing to learn.

  1. Weinke review with Site Q or experienced Q. Not required, but a good idea for a vet to check for potential issues.

  1. Too long, too short: It takes a few times go get a good feel for how long your Weinke will take to execute. Be flexible if running too long and have a couple of stand-by ideas in mind in case you run long. Think through transitions from one set to another. Minimize dead time, standing around.

  1. Tap a vet – if you need time to get unsmoked or burned through Weinke in 30 minutes, there’s no shame in asking a vet to lead Mary or the next section of the workout.

EXECUTION

  1. FNG inquiry and Disclaimer – every workout should start with an FNG Inquiry and Disclaimer
    1. Disclaimer:
      1. Why: We want to disclaimer in front of Pax because having witnesses adds a layer of protection above asking if they’ve read it on the website.
      2. What: Main points in your own words:
        1. I am not a professional
        2. This is self-policing: Stop or modify the exercises as required

  1. Take control—be the leader. Be assertive, don’t mumble. If something doesn’t work and you have to audible, acknowledge it and move on to the next exercise. Don’t apologize, just move on.

  1. Observation – Do your best to keep an eye on the pax during the workout to see if you are losing people, either from it being too easy, too confusing, or too hard. During your first few Qs, it is hard enough just to make it through the workout. Ask your Site Q or another experienced Q to keep an eye on things and whisper in your ear if needed.

FOLLOW UP

  1. Twitter counts – check with Site Q on whether he or the Q will tweet the count. Remember to use workout tag (i.e., #TheArmoryF3 also include @F3Gastonia) and the #F3Counts

  1. Backblast –
    1. Part of the workout Qs responsibility to post the Backblast, not the Site Q. The Site Q may volunteer to post the Qs first workout on his behalf but that is at his discretion .
    2. Get backblast credentials BEFORE first Q so that you are prepared to write up BB when it’s done. The website interface is not difficult and will take only a few minutes to learn. Here again, your Site Q will be an invaluable aid in assisting you to post your first BB.
    3. Get login credentials from Bandit

  1. Post Mortem – follow up with your Site Q about what went right, what could be improved, what was a disaster, etc. Seek out honest feedback from other veteran Q and Pax. The best way to improve is to address your weaknesses head on.

0700-0800 #Gashouse did a workout and felt like we did enough flying squirrels and broad jumps, “The Swiper” took it easy on us, @F3Gastonia has quality #mumblechatter and as we discussed Second F creates the workout comradery. It was great to see to see Gastonia leaders jumping into the ring to Q. Fun morning… and I always recommend gloves

Q201 was a scaled back for @F3Gastonia

  • Get more FNG’s (#sadclowns need friends)
  • Get more men involved with Q (F3 = developing male leadership)
  • Develop your regional leadership group (all men can support)
  • Rotate Q’s often (this keeps the PAX interested)
  • Change your location at each AO (get them running)
  • Warmup and cooldown are essential to reducing injuries
  • Q’ing improves your leadership
  • Enjoy your Q, let your personality show, thi sis part of the fellowship

NMM

Thank you for the invite for Q-School Q and the great attendance

@F3Gastonia has got the momentum, keep posting

Appreciate Swiper for getting involved and helping out, and providing commentary #HIM

Get on twitter (yea BA, you guys have potential with the pictures, keep up the good work)

You know when Burgundy is the Q, there will be Merkins and running. He did not disappoint. Awesome work by the PAX this morning pushing through the pain and excellent mumble chatter as well. Most of it is not suitable to retype, so we will just say spirits were high and we’re lucky none of us are running for political office. YHC appreciated the last second Omaha to take the warm up. Welcome FNGs Kindergarten Cop and Pot Hole. You guys found a strong group of men that want you to return so we can all get better together. Triple claps to the men who doubled down this morning with a 2+ mile pre-run before Burgundy dropped the hammer in the workout. Thanks to our brothers who crossed the river to join us this morning. It’s always a good time when we have Santini, Pusher, Package, and Menthol in the fold.

  1.  You checked Twitter and wanted a good butt whooping by YHC or
  2. You didnt’ check Twitter and posted not realizing you were about to get your butt whooped.

Disclaimer was kind of given and off we moseyed around the entire lot with butt kicks, high knees and karoake.

The Thang

Warmarama – all IC, SSH x 20, Windmills x 10, IW x 15, Cotton Pickers x 10, Peter Parkers x 10, Mountain Climbers x 15, Parker Peters x 10

Moseyed to the cones to explain today’s diamond pyramid.  2 sides of the diamond.  Each round bulids per side.  Start with 20 SSH each time, On the left side was 10 Squats, 10 Merkins, 10 LBC’s and Finish with 10 burpees, Right side was 10 Bombjacks, 10 CDD, 10 Flutter Kicks, Finish with 10 burpees.  Once you got to the burpees switch sides.  So in action it looked like this:

COT and BOM

Announcements – 1-22 Third F Convergence at Eternal Church Offices, 1-23 Convergence with Easley PAX, Oral Cancer Run on February 6 (YHC is the defending champ, so bring it).  Lots of PAX announcing their upcoming Q.

Prayers – Decibels cousin who lost her life to heart complications, injured PAX.

Moleskin

  1.  Unlike my last 2 BB’s and Moleskins I don’t really have much to say/gripe about/ or inspire others with.  Sorry for the disappointment.  But thanks for reading the previous 2.  Feedback from PAX all over has been amazing.
  2. Thank you Zima for the opportunity to lead this amazing group.  Was nice to lead a group of double digits again.
  3. Amazing job by the PAX today.  Little complaining, moderate mumblechatter, and plenty of hard work.
  4. Dark Helmet and Fish Sticks were killing the workout today.
  5. Great to see some new PAX out there today.  Don’t think I have ever met Quarty before.  Keep on EH’ing guys to get out here.
  6. If you haven’t chosen a word for 2016 yet (or more likely is hasn’t chosen you) spend some time thinking of a word to live by for 2016.  It should be something that scares you a little bit and challenges you at the same time.

Some old School, EVEN better new skool

  • QIC: Trucker
  • When: 01/12/16
  • Pax: YHC, Senator Tressel, Gopher, Main frame, Ginszu, Dark Helmet, Sugar Daddy, Deacon, Spiderman, Twister
  • Posted In: The Ballroom

10 PAX made the better choice on this cold morning to post at the Ballroom instead of some slacker lawyers AO (doesn’t he know that Truckers run over Lawyers??). I was expecting a larger crowd since most of the PAX don’t care for Clemson or Bama, but guess they were more afraid of the 27 degree weather. Glad to see Sugar Daddy post 2 times in a row! Of course CSPAN decided to fartsack since his Roll Tide won; actually I think he was afraid of dealing with either the Colosseum or the Ballroom workouts.

YHC was looking forward to Qing one of his old original AO’s and wanted to do something a little different than normal and to keep the PAX moving so we wouldn’t freeze. So I enlisted some help from Dark Helmets coupons. A quick disclaimer, and off we went on a mosey to the postal route parking lot for a little COP. All counts were in 12:
Good mornings
Moroccan night club
IW
Squats
Windmills

Mossy back to parking lot to pick up the coupons. We had 10 cinder blocks, just the right number for the PAX.
Mossy with cinder blocks to warehouse parking lot

place the cinder block on the asphalt, run the first warehouse light and do 1 merkin, run to the second light and do 2 merkins, run to third light and do 3 merkins, run to the fourth light and do 4 marking; return with squats and add 1 at each light; return to cinder block for 10 cinder block burpees

Rinse and repeat, this time start at 2 and double at each light and back an 10 cinder block burpees

Run to second light and do 10 squats and back, 5 cinder block burpees; rinse and repeat

Mossy to grass, 10 knee-tar-ninjas

Back to cinder blocks:
10 curls, 10 bent over rows, 10 shoulder presses, rinse and repeat.

Mossy back to grass, 10 knee-tar-ninjas

Back to cinder blocks:
10 curls, 10 bent over rows, 10 shoulder presses, rinse and repeat.

Mossy to wall: peoples chair with 4 count starting by touching toes, then knees, then shoulders, then extended press x 10; 10 dips from cinder block
Rinse and repeat

run to third light, 10 squats, back and 10 overhead presses

40 LBCs in honor of Clemson
45 hello dollies in honor of Bama
Sprint to 3 light and back

Mossy with cinder block back to COT

Glad to see 10 PAX fight the urge to stay warm in their cozzie beds and come out. Always an honor to Q since my opportunities are limited due to work travel. Every AO brings out the best in everyone here at the Fort. Since it is the beginning of 2016, we need to reflect on 2015 and identify our weakness(es) and be accountable for making changes in 2016. It is easy to fall back into our routine, but wit PAX like you we are reminded to be a better #HIM.

NAKED MAN:

Great morning and fellowship, and much love to our #HIM Dark Helmet for getting me back on the Q schedule @F3theArmory #closetohome.

We had a fun group discussion on the “why” you decided to come back to F3 for a second time. Obviously, most men are always going to reference back to the man that EH’d them, and the man that was there as the original Q, so obviously my challenge to each of you is to understand the “what and why” and the responsibility you have to each other, and to get involved and post, each man can make an impact on each other.

Also I would be interested the “why” you posted a second time at F3, please share with me the next time we post together.

Some old school, so new skool

  • QIC: Chaser
  • When: 01/12/16
  • Pax: Maximus, Apache, Santini, Hauschka, El Diablo, Dog Pound, Anchorman
  • Posted In: The Colosseum

8 men made the correct choice and posted to a gladiator workout instead of the tiny-arm tango across town. CSPAN, who had verbally confirmed his attendance less than 8 hours before decided to #fartsack…he missed out.  We started at 5:15 on the dot and began a shoulder burner.

Warm-up – mosey around the loop and then over to the basketball courts with a combo of butt-kickers, high knees, karaoke and backwards mosey.

25 SSH, 15 IW, 15 slooow merkins, 15 overhead claps, plank series including the crowd-pleasing sit-through, Peter Parkers and Mtn. Climbers.  Then something new: the #loophole stretch x10.  I wanted to get the shoulders warmed up a bit more so this was the trick: hands extended overhead and out in front with palms facing you (1); rotate your arms around making a large circle overhead (2) until the meet in the back (3) and then back to the front (ONE).

Mosey to the loop curb: 20 #RollingThunder…these are always “easy” with lots of chatter until you hit around 10…

Mosey back to the basketball courts: 4 hours of #ClockworkMerkins

Mosey over the the football stands for a few loops up and down the stairs (partial recon) and then back over to the base of the hill:

  1. Bear crawl up switching to reverse bear crawl midway.  Rinse and Repeat in reverse (starting w/ reverse bear crawl);
  2. Hill Sprints x 5 ending with 10 burpees OYO at the top.

Mosey over and around and back to the base of the steps by the hill: #Step-frogs (this is a horrible name, someone please think of something better…)  Goes something like this: Merkin position on the steps, perform a Merkin and then do a dynamic Merkin to advance up the next step.  Repeat until you get to the top.  Rinse & repeat.  (No lost teeth = win!)  Ab lab while waiting for the six.

Mosey back to the base of the hill: Hill sprints x5

Mosey back to the basketball courts: 2 hours of #ClockworkMerkins

Mosey to the near wall:  Peoples Chair w/ 25 Moroccan Nightclubs, Recover, Peoples Chair with 25 Overhead claps.

Mosey to the some other wall: Balls to the wall with a 45-degree to 90 degree progression.  Rinse & Repeat x3

Mosey back over to COT w/ a short ab-lab so nobody felt cheated by ending 90 seconds early.

Always a pleasure to Q at this AO – so many options and always a great group.  Thanks for the opportunity, Maximus!  Also want to thank Anchorman for hearing my call and Apache for making the trip across the river

Moleskin:

I been banged up with a bad back since mid November and its beginning to get annoying. Been to Dr, Chiropractor, taking Advil’s, muscle relaxers and other meds. Stretching, acupuncture, and other stuff. Ran the Joe Davis and was feeling good. Thought to myself, I will ease it in and hope I’m in the clear. At 5pm Saturday night, my back locked up and it was all I could do to breathe.

Finally I left it at the cross…..said “God what are you telling me here?”. Prayer for my mind and heart be open to hear what he is telling me. If I need to be humble…..need to focus on something else……whatever it is….tell me Lord. This is where I needed to start….not end up there. I been praying and asking for prayer….but I really needed to open my heart and mind to what God is telling me to do…..what is his message.

Today I told the PAX to open his word and understand its an instruction book on Life. NOT A RULE BOOK!! It is His Story and you need to find your Story. He created us, and blessed us with this life and would not leave us here with no instructions. We wait until we are lost before reading the map or we wait until something breaks before reviewing the instruction on how we should have built it. DON’T WAIT!! Open the word and find what God has instore for your life!!

Peace Out

Cake Boss
