The Grinch who stole the Ranch Q

What was originally billed as Axl’s VQ later became a marketed Cerrano beatdown. When the later fell ill, it was time for YHC to snag a Q for the Ranch. When CSPAN stated on the Twitter Machine that he’d take the Q if no #HIM stood up, that was my queue to take the…well Q. With very little time to plan, I put together a workout that would require a Christmas fartsack. I work well under pressure. The disclaimer was 3 words…Modify As Needed…with that, we moseyed to the front of the middle school drop off lane with some dynamic stretches (butt kickers, high knees, etc.)

The Thang
COP in front of Middle School
SSH X50
Low Slow Squat X15
Merkins X15
Mountain Climbers X25
Windmills X15
Seal Jacks X25

Now we were all warmed up. Time for the meat and potatoes. YHC explained that the Pax would be partnering up (to push each other and hold each other accountable) and that there would be two parts to the following series: Exercise and Mode of Transportation. Pax would be required to do 20 -25 reps of an exercise at each speed bump (5 speed bumps in the loop) in the pickup lane. They would also be given their mode of transportation. Thus, the Grinch in me showed up:

First Lap

Exercise: 20 Burpees (100 cumulative)
Transport: Running

Second Lap
Exercise: 25 Squats (125 cumulative)
Transport: Partner Carries

Third Lap
Exercise: 25 LBCs (125 cumulative)
Transport: Bear Crawl/Jog Alternating

Time flew (or not) so no time for laps 4 and 5. We headed back to the parking lot but had enough time to make 4 stops to complete 10 Merkins OYO at each stop. With two minutes left, we completed a series of suicides.

The PAX from The Fort, Alcatraz, Indianland and Rock Hill arrived at The Yard for a Post Christmas Convergence.

It’s Boxing Day and YHC had some Rocky memories flowing from my days in Philly and I thought about having the PAX chase chickens or punch sides of beef in a freezer, however too expensive and way too involved. So we opted for some good old beatdown F3 style.

Apache got things started with the 1st annual Cake Boss Calves 5k. I have to admit, its pretty cool having a 5k named after my body parts, but I hoped it would have been my eyes….oh well! 26 posted for the run and Old Bay texted me this number as I was setting up The Yard and so it confirmed for me to expect a quality turn out from the PAX.

The PAX arrived car after car and the mumble chatter started. It was great to see many of the men we don’t get to see week in and week out. I called (whistled) the PAX in tight for some announcements and introduction of Stang. He got us started for the warm up and away we went.

Mosey around YHC’s truck to side of school and some high knees, butt kickers, and other stuff as we head back towards the school yard for COP. Stang took us through half dozen traditional moves to get the bodies in motion.

Hand off to YHC (Cake Boss), with some instructions on the “meat” of the workout. Count off in 9s to form 9 groups. Each group to go to 9 different stations perform the 2 exercises on each station for 3 mins. Once time is up, rotate to next station. It is a You vs You routine where the fit can challenge themselves and the new or building can pace themselves.

I shared a message around preparation in all areas of our lives. As a Boxer prepares for the match, we need to prepare if we intend to get better. Our hearts, minds, spirits need to be prepared for all the challenges and adventures life puts before us. Are you going to sit on the sidelines or read the playbook and prepare for the match ahead.

The 9 groups made their way each round to the sound of YHC and my whistle….haha. Hated using a whistle but was best way to get everyone moving together. It was a solid workout. We ended with COP and some men paying a debt of burpees for the Army/Navy game.

COT had 77 present and 4 FNG’s, Shelby, Omaha, Might Mite, & Snapper…..Welcome! Prayers for the many health concerns, sudden passing’s, and injured PAX. Prayers also for those PAX struggling in marriage, finances and parenting. Do what you need to in these areas to prepare and work through the tribulations.

Thanks to Old Bay and CSPAN for the honor to lead a Convergence at The Yard. Humbled and Honored.

We had 40 at the 2nd F at the Ft Mill Family Restaurant. They did a great job dealing with us and our stench. Was it ok for me to EH the owner while he was taking our food orders???

Merry Christmas PAX and I look forward to 2016 with all of you.

Clown Cars from the Fort for 1/1

Gentlemen (and the rest of you):

I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for me, so I will. On 1/1/16, all PAX of F3 Nation have been invited to celebrate the 5th anniversary of this crazy thing that has inspired so many of us to burn the ships (and our fat pants), to reach in out in service and love to our community (and to our F3 brothers), and to straighten our walk with the SkyQ (which for me = My Heavenly Father). For me, this experience has touched and helped to shape nearly every aspect of my character over the last year that I have been involved, and I look forward to the next 5 years to see what changes will come from my association with all of you.

That said, we are going to support this “ultra-convergence”, if you will, and clown car up to the celebratory workout on New Year’s.

Here are the details as I know them:
1. We will meet at 0600 with wheels up at 0610 at the Baxter Starbucks
2. The workout location is Alexander Graham (AG) Middle School in Charlotte.
3. The workout start time is 0700. End is 0800.
4. There won’t be a much better time to bring an FNG, than to this. SO EH SOMEBODY.
5. I am not personally aware of any formal coffeeteria plans immediately following the workout, but I am certain that there will be at least one or two happening, so I’d plan on spending that time there as well.
6. The link to the Pre-Blast is here: http://f3nation.com/2015/12/16/the-fifth-anniversary-convergence-1116/

Several of you have committed to driving a car of clowns up, but if there are more, please let me know @darkhelmetF3, or let me know if you’d like to go, but not drive (which is the camp I fall into… Ask Spiderman (@F3_Spiderman) or Whitesnake (@Raindawg), nobody wants me to drive).

AYE!

Helmet, out.

Today we took time to recognize the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of our Savior. Contrary to popular belief, Jesus” was actually born in March – which coincides with the Gospel descriptions of shepherds tending their flocks on the hillside. It wasn’t until the 4th century that the Romans changed the celebration to December 25, replacing the pagan holiday of Saturnia.
We all know the story of Christ’s birth. It has almost become second nature and we probably don’t give it much thought. But science now has evidence to support part of the story. In 1991, “The Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society” (volume 32, pages 389-407) noted that Chinese astronomers had observed a long-tailed slow-moving comet in their skies during March of 5 BC. This sui-hsing, or “star,” hung in the Capricorn region for more than 70 days. This same comet would have been visible in the skies over Persia, home of the Magi, in the hours just before dawn. Due to the earth’s orbital motion, the comet’s light would have been directly in front of the Magi during their journey – hence they would have truly followed the star.
Let’s not forget that this isn’t just a Hallmark holiday or an excuse to get off work, but it is the celebration of our perfect God, brought to life in flesh, born of the virgin Mary in a sinful world, to live a sinless life, and to be the ultimate sacrifice for the atonement of our sins. We are a blessed people. Please take the time this holiday season to remember the true reason of the season.
We each took turns thanking our God for the blessings in our lives. Many men mentioned thanks for their families, friends, and health. Some lifted up others that have been dealt bad health news. We recognize that we have been given so much. I encourage you to be a blessing out of your blessings. Take time to be His hands and feet in this world. Do something special for someone else. Do what you know is right.
Overall, it was an awesome morning of Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. It was such an encouragement to see four 2.0s joining their daddies for a tough morning workout. Turbine, Catfish, and Bogey, you’re doing it right! Excellent mumble chatter and awesome fellowship at Panera following the workout.
Merry Christmas, men! Enjoy your off day tomorrow with family and friends.

27 pax posted at Pantheon for a session advertised to include pain and rain combining to drain your brain.  Well, the rain did not post (a welcome absence for many I assume).  But the pain came in waves and the fog (of both weather and mental varieties) presented its own challenges…together with muggy 60s temps, the cocktail certainly left the pax stumbling home afterward.

The Thang

Warm up run around visitor parking lot to side of school

COP — Mtn climbers, IWs, Peter Parkers, SSHs, CDDs, Windmills

Run to “amphitheater” (Shakespeare would be sorely disappointed, just saying)

Bear crawl to top level, bear crawl down
(Rinse and repeat numerous times – 7, 8, 9? Who knows)

Sprint to top, jog down
(Rinse and repeat many times – 5, 6, 7?)
Throw in another bear crawl, then another sprint

(After leaving the groundskeeper plenty of repair work) run to far side of school to porch with concrete loop trail nearby and partner up

Partner 1: Balls to the wall
Partner 2: Sprint 1 lap around path
Flapjack
(Rinse & repeat for total of 3 cycles)

Miscellaneous plank series

Partner 1: Donkey kicks
Partner 2: Sprint 1 lap
Flapjack

Miscellaneous plank series

Partner 2: Sprint 1 lap opposite direction
Flap jack
(Rinse and repeat for total of 3 cycles)

No burpees? No merkins?  Did this qualify as an F3 workout?  Well, judging from the surly mumble chatter and sweat, it seemed to have plenty of suck.

Great work by everyone today!  Posting was a feat in itself — first day of no school means no other reasons to rise and shine early.  Plus, Cantore certainly provided plenty of incentive to push the #smartsack button today.  But as soon as YHC pulled into the lot (a bit on the late side admittedly), it was quite clear that this crowd was ready to rumble.

Not sure what kind of performances take place at the TCES amphitheater, but I expect the pax whose kids attend will let out a groan the next time their child talks about an outing to that spot.

As we close out 2015 and the theme of Purpose for the month of December, the message today focused on walking your own path of Purpose.  For those new to the 3rd F or Purpose in general, one key is not to over complicate the picture and to avoid the sense that you have to have it all figured out.  As one who has slogged down the Purpose path for 30+ years, I frequently find myself lost in the fog of uncertainty and wrestling with endless mumble chatter aimed to confused and distract me.  A clear picture of the mission, the end game, the master plan?  That is not me…at least not today.  My comfort comes through the realization that all I have to do is take one step forward, in the direction that seems most consistent with my core values.  What I need to know will be revealed in time…all I need to do is keep taking one step at a time.  Christmas season is a perfect reminder of this.  Joseph and Mary took exactly this approach.  When the angels showed up, they said “Yes” and then they took a step.  They did not and could not have known the whole story at the beginning or at any point along the way.  Imagine what that must have been like for them.  And then follow their lead, one step at a time.

Prayers for STH and his mother, injured pax and those struggling through marital and family challenges.

Thanks to Zima for his leadership at Pantheon and to Cable Guy for the opportunity to stand in for him while he is on IR.

Merry Christmas, gents!

Gauge’s VQ!

  • QIC: Gauge
  • When: 12/22/15
  • Pax: The Riddler, Catfish, Strings (FNG), Turbine, Apache, Apollo Creed, Walker
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

8 brave PAX paddled out to the gloom at Eagles Nest for a Gauge VQ. Temperature was nice but a steady drop of rain kept the men moving trying to dodge rain drops.

The Warmup:
Quick circle with 15 SSH IC, 10 Windmills IC, and 15 Moroccan Night Clubs  IC

The Thang:
1 mile run with a couple of stops to throw in some merkins and burpees.  The run wound up at the light posts and after some quick stretching the fun really got started.

Alternating high knees and butt kicks at every light pole with 5 merkins at each transition. Most Pax completed the 6 sets required except Walker who decided to knock out and additional 6.  Then we worked our way back to the starting spot except this time we alternated bear crawls and walking lunges with 5 squats at each transition. This was followed by a short mosey over to the stairs and in honor of the Tarheel victory last night we knocked out a 4 corner routine. Burpees, squats, merkins, and dips made up the corners with a stair climb in between.

After a brief pause to catch our breath we started our mosey home with one stop on the way to throw in some more dips and derkins. Once back to base we knocked out a quick Ab circuit of 6 inches, hello dolly, and American Jack Hammers

Finish up with Count, namorama, and named new FNG ( Strings).

One truly awesome thing about the southeast United States is the prevalence of shorts weather at the end of December. Many PAX who have spent some time in the more northerly climes can probably agree that, while not always white, the end of December is for pants (maybe 2 pair) and you might be OK, if the wind isn’t blowing, and it isn’t a hunting trip, or Lambeau Field, or whatever. While I miss the hunting trips with my dad, I don’t miss all that snow, and I definitely don’t miss the bone crackin’ cold of NW Montana.

That said, 9 men with a desire to be stronger, came to the Coop outfitted in their short shorts and t-shirts on this, the eve of Christmas Eve. The lot lights clicked on, right on time, the disclaimer, and then the mosey.

Warm Up (didn’t include Hot Chocolate):

Mosey around the lot with some high knees, butt kicks, high skips, and backward running. Circle up for more fun.

ALL IC

SSH x 25

IW X 15

Carolina dry docks x 15

Moroccan night clubs x 17

Freddie Mercuries x 20

The Thang:

Part 1- Pyramid of Pain at the Pull-up Bars (like that alliteration)

Pull-ups then equal reps of Jump Squats following this pyramid:

2-4-6-8-6-4-2 (FYI that’s ‘only’ 32 pull-ups)

Mosey back to the lot for Part 2 – Four Corners of the Apocalypse

Corner 1: Partner calf raises x 10 each partner

Corner 2: Derkins x 20

Corner 3: Sumo-squats x 20

Corner 4: Perfect Push-ups x 10

Center: Burpees x 5

1 lap = Center, Corner 1, Center, Corner 2, Center, Corner 3, Center, Corner 4

3 laps with Max effort and Min rest.

Cool down with 5 minutes of Mary. All PAX lead their favorite core activity.

COT and BOM.

Moleskin:

I was honored with the passing of the site Q flag from Chicken Hawk to me today. I have come a long way from 4 months ago, when I could barely keep up with the guys that I considered the leaders. I looked to them for inspiration and for that push to get out there, even on the cold and rainy days. Why? Because I knew they would already be there. Maybe with a smile, maybe just a fist bump, maybe a full on bro-hug. They were there to help me be a stronger person, a better leader and friend, really, a better man. Now that I get to turn it around, I hope I can be that leader that inspires someone else to roll out and get a little better with me each day.

Prayers for everyone to stay focused on the reason for Christmas.

We should glorify God in all that we do. People sometimes go to church and may try to live honorably Sunday afternoon. Once their week starts, their focus on God subsides to a low priority. When Sunday comes back around, they glorify God. That tends to be the routine for many.

God wants us to continually and glorify Him. A great example of a man who glorifies God is Stephen Curry. During his MVP award speech, Curry said that he plays basketball for God. Curry dedicate his talents and awards to God. Unfortunately, we don’t see such open glorification often enough. People tend to act as if they are the sole reason for their success. Dedicate your talent and accolades to our Heavenly Father.

Bible Verse:

  • “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31
  • For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen”. ~ Romans 11:36

Why did you come?

  • QIC: Jekyll
  • When: 12/22/2015
  • Pax: El Diablo, Howitzer, Geronimo, Dark Helmet, Gecko, Funhouse, Spiderman, Fishsticks
  • Posted In: The Fort

9 pax gathered in the gloom.  Moderate cold and pouring rain that would make Noah proud.  I asked the question “why did you come today?”  Answers: “The right thing to do”, “keep a commitment”, “for you(my brothers)”.  Aye.  Indeed it was an easy day to throw in the towel.  Everyone got better today.

I’ve done this Q twice before (atleast) and it ALWAYS delivers.  It’s about endurance and pushing your self. We hit all of the major food groups: burpees(arms, legs), Bomb jacks(legs), Lunge walks(more legs), Carolina Dry Docks( shoulders), Bear Crawl(shoulders), LBC (abs), Ab Lab(more abs), Cardio( each lap was 1/2 mile).

COP: SSH, Squat, IW, Windmill

The Thang:

Start at Bank. Run to bottom of Hill.  5 Burpees.

Run up Hill. 5 Bombjacks.

Run to Wall- Lunge walk length of wall (48) then 10 CDD

Run to Bank- Bear Crawl length of bank then 20 LBC

1 lap includes 1/2 mile run

Finish with 6 MOM as we wait for the #six.

AYG back to COT

NMM:

Great showing of enouragement and grit today.  All got 4 laps (2 miles).  Leaders got in 5(2.5 miles).  El Diablo on his 3 post showing what this thing is about.  Howitzer now in top 1/4 of Pax fitness level. Dont sleep on him.  YHC probably won the VT today but Geronimo may have edged me.  How does one smile and talk through that much pain.  #jumpsoutofairplanes.  I’m tired of typing how fast Fishsticks is.  Gecko challenged on the lead group.  Funhouse got miles before and after.  Spiderman and Dark Helmet discussed Star Wars Theories on their peaceful jaunt.

Big prayers for STH’s mom as she battles cancer a third time

Have a truely wonderful Christmas
