Now that’s a warm-up

  • QIC: Mugshot, Popeye, Mayhem

19 Pax descended on Sullivan Middle and Cherry Park for a brutal beat down.

Mugshot (on his VQ) got things off to a stunning start with the Parris Island Shuffle. Which was worse than it sounded. 50 merkins, sprint across the football field, 50 LBCs, sprint across the football field, 40 merkins, sprint across the football field…you get the drift.

Handed off to Popeye
Zombie Indian Run, which was basically a walking lunge with some sprinting mixed in.
Rollie Pollie – merkin, flip, dip, flip, rinse & repeat until your too dizzy to keep going or get to the end of the curb
The Show: 20 box jumps, 20 incline merkins, 20 derkins, 20 step ups each leg

Handoff to YHC
COP (no workout’s complete without one): SSH, Parker-Peter, Peter-Parker, Windmills, Monkey Humpers
Mosey to Cherry Park
Leg Work: Peoples Chair, calf raises, monkey humpers, peoples chair, monkey humpers
Green Mile: 300 Freddie Mercuries, 200 Monkey Humpers, 100 Merkins
For good measure: Peoples chair, monkey humpers
Sprint to COT, 6 inches, and superman to finish

Announcements: too many to recount, other than our goal to get to 500 PAX in The Fort. Get those EH’s in gear!

Welcome to Daniel-san and Goodfella. Great work out men!

Half Dozen @ the Hive

  • QIC: Backdraft
  • When: 08/21/15
  • Pax: Corruption, Seacrest, Lugnut, Howitzer, Dogpound
  • Posted In: The Hive

Half dozen at the Hive for a kettlebell smack down. Nice to be able to come and lead these men through a workout that may have had more running than kettlebell throwing. It was also great to get a chance to lead again after taking a hiatus from Qing after having ankle surgery. The workout went something like this.

Mosey around perimeter of parking lot x2

Circle up for warm up SSH x 30, IW’s x 20, Merkins x 20, Low slow squat x 20, Windmills x 20.

Pick up Kettlebells and make way to edge of lot and let the pain begin.

After each of the following exercises each pax ran to the other side of parking lot and back at a speedy pace they than held a plank and waited for the six to start the next exercise.

KB Halo. Goblet Squats, tricep extensions, shoulder press on right side, shoulder press on left side, bent over rows right side, bent over rows left side, chest press right side, chest press left side, curls right and left sides.

About half way through those exercises we found a wall and did three sets of peoples chair and BTW.

We also had time at end to knock out some ab work with flutters, protractors, lbcs and not to forget rosalitas.

It is always a pleasure to lead

Backdraft out.

I have been working on a sermon for the last few weeks. The first topic was about men who complain about burn-out…I am calling “Bull$hit”…We are men of a higher calling, and we are meant to wake up early with F3, go to our jobs and work our tails off, ride home, sit in the driveway (for a few minutes) and pray for the Holy Spirit to give us the energy and strength to be the #HIM leader of our family and we should go to bed each night “wore out”…I also need to include being the spouse your wife needs you to be (most of us are still working on that…and keep working on that, always think of her as a gift from GOD)…#ramble

Get you and your family involved at church and lead your family with your faith.

I had a couple of other of sermon topics…but the suicides were depleting the oxygen to my brain…#hopetheymadesense

Today is my son’s 26 birthday – Happy Birthday Tucker!

6 #HIM went to #C&W2 for a great lesson on John 6 by Gecko, I really enjoyed the discussion, I encourage all men to try this 3rd F #strong, and hopefully my ADHD did not sidetrack the discussion too much…thanks for having me.

Be a better man today than you were yesterday,

Twister’s cinder block beat down had to be deferred to a future date due to stormy weather in FL that kept him from flying back home Wed evening.  YHC and CB pitched in to bring the pain on a dark and muggy morning at The Ranch.

Extra credit goes to CB, Free Bird & White Lightning for their 2 mile warm  up run pre-launch AND to Spiderman and Cyrano for posting early for some local miles nearby.  Sure seems like the running bug has infected the pax in a big way when 50% of the attendees at a workout are running ahead of time…and these are not even the BRR participants!  Great job, guys!

Always an honor to lead.  Thanks to CB for picking up 1/2, to Twister for reaching out and to McGruff for his continued leadership at The Ranch.

  • Posted In: The Fort

Another improvement Thursday with the Board of Pain at ManU this morning. 18 crazy men decided to leave their fartsacks to attack the evil BoP. So proud of these guys.

Below are the outcomes this week:

Board of Pain Challenge:

(1/4 mile run between each exercise)

Burpees – 100

Calf Raises – 150 (50 regular, 50 toes pointed in, 50 toes pointed out)

Ski Abs – 100

Merkins – 100

Deep Squats – 100

LBCs – 200

Carolina Dry Docks – 100  (River Rat)

Russian Twists – 100

Mac Tar Jai– 100  (Mailman, Mayham, Swamp Fox, Catfish – 50, Bogey – 25, Billboard – 50)

Jump Squats – 100 (Mugshot – 50, Geppetto – 20, Popeye – 15, Wheels – 50)

Mountain Climbers – 100 (Scout – 50, Riddler – 40, Padre – 40)

Shoulder Raises – 200 (Italian Job – 107)

Mary Catherines – 100 (Tinker Toy, Burgundy, Sgt. York)

Hello Dolly – 200

Wide Arm Merkins – 100

Squat Jacks – 100

Nippler– 100

Burpees – 100

Every man improved from last week. Our newcomers to the BoP were Mugshot, Scout, Mailman, Mayham, Bogey, Billboard, River Rat, Wheels, and Swamp Fox.

  • Riddler went up another 2 rungs to Mountain Climbers. He’s improved 6 rungs from his first week.
  • Catfish went up 30 Mac Tar Jais this week.
  • Sgt. York jumped 1 rung to Mary Catherines. That’s 4 rungs from week one.
  • Geppetto went up 1 rung to Jump Squats. That’s a gain of 3 rungs since the first week.
  • Popeye went up 2 rungs this week to Jump Squats.
  • Padre went up 1 rung to Mountain Climbers.
  • Tinker Toy and Burgundy went up 1 rung to Mary Catherines, a gain of 3 total from week one.
  • YHC went up 1 rung to Shoulder Raises, 2 rungs up from week one.

Our newbies made quite the showing today. A few notes of record:

  • River Rat had great form today. He took his time to make sure everything was done right. Great work!
  • Mailman, Mayham, and Swamp Fox hit it hard and completed Mac Tar Jais – no small feat.
  • Awesome work by Billboard in his first week with F3. The guy is drinking from a fire hose and doing great!
  • It was good to see Bogey resurface after a few weeks of IR.
  • Mugshot and Wheels both posted for the first time at BoP and got through 50 Jump Squats. To do that in week one is super impressive.
  • Perhaps the most astonishing is how Scout continues to CRUSH everything we throw at him. This guy made it to 50 Mountain Climbers – at age 68! You read that right. We’re starting to wonder if he’s human. Double Respect!

Remember men, we do this to get better. You are all an inspiration. Show up next week to finish out the BoP Challenge and see who made the most progress.

Announcements

Pantheon Prowess

  • QIC: Senator Tressel
  • When: 08/19/15
  • Pax: Aquaman, Zima, CSPAN, Flacco, Royale, Gears, Chaser, Lugnut, Fishticks, Axel, Cerrano, Willy, Cake Boss,
  • Posted In: Pantheon

Fourteen men converged on the soggy campus of Tega Cay Elementary for another beatdown at the Pantheon.   Here is what they did:

The Thang:

Nice,  easy jog around the loop in the front of the school, and follow the path to the basketball court in the back for COP:

All in cadence:

SSH x 50, Merkn x 10, Windmill x 20, Squat x 25, LBC x 25, Diamond Merk x 15, IW x 25,         MCx20/Peter Parker x 20/6″ hold/Parker Peter x 20/6″ hold (no break)

Mosey to the swingset and split into two groups:

Group 1:  Ab swings

Group 1:  Jump up, grab the top cross bar,  and swing through.

Flapjack when everyone swings the lengh of the swingset  (15 reps.)

Mosey down one flight of stairs to the retaining wall and count off by 2’s

Group 1:  Run down the stair flights  all the way to the bottom and head back up

Group 2: Choose a wall height (Olympic, NCAA, Varsity, JV, or Middle School),  pull yourself up and jump down.  Continue pull ups until Group 1 gets back.  Flapjack

Mosey over the the ampitheater base for modified Jacob’s ladder:

Round 1:  5 merkins, bearcrawl to 1st tier, 10 merkins, bearcrawl to 2nd teir, 15 merkins, bearcrawl to 3rd tier, 20 merkins, run back down the hill and plank.

Round 2:  Same as round 1, but do dips and crabwalk to next tier, run back down hill and plank

Round 3 Same as round 1, but do burpees and run to next tier.   Mosey to COT after completing last set of burpees.

COT

Moleskiin

This was my VQ at the Pantheon and it was great to have 14 strong for it.  Had fun trying out new things at a new AO, and as usual, I was a little leary about doing certain things (running stairs in the dark, jumping and grabbing a big, wet crossbar), but thankfully no one slipped or tripped,  and we all made it to COT in one piece.   I appreciate the Pax keeping me from ‘clotheselining’ on that yellow chain at the start of the workout.   My ankle is still healing from stepping in a pothole last week – #notpayingattention

Have to shout out to Aquaman who led the pack on the Jacob’s ladder,  and to the one or two (Chaser?) who chose the Olympic height retaining wall for the pull ups and did a bonus round – respect!

Great work by everyone today.  It’s always a pleasure to lead such a fine group and I can’t think of a better way to start my Wednesday.

Announcements:  check the newsletter or Twitter.  It’s all there.

Prayers:  forgot to ask for prayer requests this morning.  My apologies, men.

NMM:

I was excited when my 2.0, Little Lightning, decided to join us this morning. Not just because of the workout, but because of the men he was surrounded by in that hour.  You all are a great example for him and other 2.0’s.  You are:  Men that push themselves and each other, Men that encourage each other to do more than you thought you could, Men that share in each others joys and pain, and men that pray together.  Thank you for being this example.

  • Posted In: The Colosseum

It’s finally cooling off a little and so the gloom is back to being gloomy instead of feeling like a sauna… I was excited to lead this AM, because a few weeks ago I finished reading Freed To Lead, and I had some things that had struck me, which I felt compelled to share with the PAX, and so I was glad to see 23 of us showed up to work. So, as it was another beautiful day in Mr. Maximus’ neighborhood, and after a little disclaiming, we got right to it.

The Thang:
WARM UP:
Mosey down the drive, take a left into the loop at the front of the school with some knee pulls, Frankensteins, windmill walkers, etc. then mosey down to short track and circle up
– Fast SSH x 30
– Moroccan Night Clubs x 30
– IW x 15
– Squats x 30
– Reach throughs x 15
– Burpees (in cadence) x 15

Mosey to playground by short track and grab a partner – size will matter
– P1: runs suicides on the basketball court / P2: Swerkins until partner returns / FLAPJACK
– Rinse and Repeat
Then, I read a short excerpt from Freed to Lead (1).
– 3 laps around short track while singing in cadence (that petered out quickly, except for Longshanks and I), then mosey down to the soccer field
– Discover that the gate is locked and improvise to modify exercises for parking lot… (the PAX didn’t know it, but they were glad)
7. Read from book: excerpt 3
Line up at end of parking lot:
– Partner 1 carry Partner 2 about 20 yards then drop and do 10 single count perfect merkins together
– Switch and go 25 more yards doing the same thing
– Turn and repeat back to start and plank for the 6
Then, I read another short excerpt from Freed to Lead (2).
Line up again:
– Partner 1 wheelbarrow 25 yards then do 5 burpees
– Bear crawl 25 more yards then 5 burpees
– Switch and go back to beginning in same manner
Mosey to the wall:
– Wall sit 30 seconds
– BTTW for 30 seconds
– Wall sit for 30 seconds
– BTTW for 30 seconds
“Sometimes, you wish was it was easier, but if it was, everyone else would do it. Then you remember you don’t want to be like everyone else.” Aye!
Mosey back to cars for a quick minute of Protractor and last part of book. (3)

NMM:
It’s always a joy and a privilege to be with my brothers. You all are my kind of idiots. It was a good workout, we got a good sweat, we didn’t kill the FNG, and we even got the Cable Guy seal of approval at the end of it all as he punctuated his approval with one of those guttural utterances he has become so famous for…

(1) “Much as a bowling ball is made to roll down lanes and knock down pins, each man is made for something. F3 is the hand that puts the ball in motion. It knocks the dust off and helps the man find his lane so he can begin rolling again. It helps him be what he was designed to be.”

(2) “That may be the only way to kill a Starfish organization. Make each man care about himself more than he does the organization or the other men in it. In other words, make it acceptable for each man to put himself first. Do that and the organization disintegrates into its component parts. It ceases to exist.” Are we first? NO! We are 3rd…

(3) There are many great Workout locations in F3Nation, but Charlotte’s Freedom Park was the first. It is where it all started. Not only is it a great place for a Workout, it also serves the community in a thousand different ways. The average man in F3Metro probably spends an average of 7 hours a week there in one capacity or another. Go there on a Saturday morning in the spring or fall and you will see the parking lot overrun with kids playing soccer and baseball. There is so much sweet America there it will make your teeth hurt. When the world is running particularly amok, a day in Freedom is all a man needs to keep him focused on what we have here, what is worth protecting. The World may be afire, but we have Freedom, Brothers. We have Freedom. Is it likewise in every park that is part of F3Nation? We imagine so. That is really why we do this, isn’t it?
One day after soccer, Dredd was walking toward his minivan with his daughters when the youngest one asked him why there were never any police officers at Freedom Park. He had never thought about it until that moment, but she was right. Except at the front gate (enforcing the no-left turn rule), he had never seen a police officer patrolling the park. So he answered, “They are probably at other places where they are needed.”
Which prompted her older sister (in her older sister voice) to say, “Yeah, we don’t need them here because we have the daddies.”
Little sister replied, “Rigggght, we have the daddies to keep us safe at Freedom. The police are at the parks without the daddies.” At that, Dredd kind of looked away so his daughters wouldn’t see the tears in his eyes, and he noticed that he could see about five other F3 guys within nine-iron distance, coaching soccer or cheering their kids on. And he knew there were another twenty F3 men that he couldn’t see from where he was standing. But they were there.
It occurred to Dredd that if the bad guys came to Freedom they might have thought it easy pickings because they would see no police on duty. But they would be mistaken. If evil came to Freedom it would have the daddies to contend with, and it would not stand a chance. While we might be outnumbered, Brothers, we have locked our shields and will keep them locked in the heat of battle. We know that to be true.
Alone, we may go down fighting, but we are still easily overcome. But we do not fight alone. We fight behind the Locked Shields of the Minivan Centurions. That shield wall will not be broken. That is Why We Are Here. We are F3.”

Helmet, out…

AUDIBLE for Rock Hill 2nd F today, 8/18/15 – 1st F add-on!

I had overlooked the fact that this Tuesday was our standing 2nd-F Tuesday.

We normally meet at McHale’s, and folks drift in between 6pm and 7pm, as they get off work.

Before I realized this was the 3rd Tuesday, Apache and I had agreed to try a new thang: The “Legal Remedy Brewery” (LRB) in Rock Hill is kicking-off weekly group runs, starting today. They claim to have 3,4,5, & 6 mile routes mapped out.

Starting time is 6:30 at 129 Oakland Avenue in RH.

So… If you’re up for it, join us for an informal 1st-F at 6:30 at the brewery.
Regardless, stick around for 2nd-F at the Legal Remedy Brewery.

POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL AUDIBLE: As of yesterday, LRB did NOT have it’s Certificate of Occupancy (that’s how new it is!). So… If the doors are shut at LRB, look for us at McHales!
