Seeking to Understand

  • QIC: NASA (VQ)
  • When: 10/05/2016

When I was asked by Witch Hunt to VQ a workout at the Abyss, man was I excited…..and anxious. I have tremendous respect for him and the rest of the PAX, and I did not want to disappoint any of them. I knew I’d have to think outside the box to make things different, yet challenging and fun. Thanks Witch for the opportunity my friend!

I showed up about 30 minutes early for I couldn’t really sleep, I was so ready to roll. It was a chilly morning…..the first real chill of the new fall season. Wind was blowing, so it was going to be a cool one. As time closed near 5:00, I was pretty much still the only one there. I was wondering if I missed the “fall back” on the clocks…..or if the PAX was messing with me. Around 5 a few cars showed up, but folks stayed in and out of the cold. I don’t blame them. Then, the light at the school turn-in FINALLY changed (the light I usually run) and a flood of vehicles poured in. HIMs abound! I was stoked!

As things drew close to start time we gathered around, there was quite alot of mumblechatter and laughs from the PAX as usual. It is a rather close, mostly chatty group of characters who are witty, smart, funny, and strong in every way yet caring, supporting, and open. This is the fellowship you will not get at a gym. This is what got me here and what keeps me here. This is what really gets you invigorated and inspired. What a way to start a day.

The disclaimer was given, no FNGs unfortunately, and off we went…..

Started off with a light-pace jog all around the front parking lot, with some high knees, butt-kickers, left / right shuffles in for good measure. Bones almost got a nut-kicker from my butt-kicker.

Continued to the back lot in the back of the school for the buses. Nicely elevated the heart rate a little. Time to get it rolling.

Circle up for COP (be honest, I forgot the counts of each):

  • Side-straddle Hops
  • Windmills
  • Mountain Climbers
  • A dash of Honey-mooner and Downward-Facing Dog
  • On hands and knees, opposite arm and leg raise – 20 sec per side x 2
  • Morrocan NIght Clubs
  • Imperial Walkers

Preamble to the Message – as we recovered from the COP before The Thang:

I once worked as an engineer on the US Space Shuttle program at Kennedy Space Center for almost 15 years. Wernher von Braun, a brilliant engineer and one of the founding fathers of the US space program, once said “Success in space demands perfection.” That is something everyone in the program lived by. Perfection in everything we did, and also in that we sought to fully and completely understand everything about the mission at hand – the environment you’re operating in, the goals of the mission, how you plan on achieving them, the design/fabricatiion/operation of the machinery needed, who is to do what and when, what you will be doing when you get there, how you will do it, backup plans, and so forth. When you have that level of full, complete understanding then team execution is made much easier to a degree. As a result, the US space program has made some incredible achievements. But flawed or incomplete understanding, as well as complacency leading to not correct root cause issues, also led to tragedy.  We were painfully reminded that we, as humans, are far from perfect.

Life here on the pale blue dot we call Earth is alot more unforgiving than space in my opinion. There are far too many unknowns as well as too many things out of your control, that pull you all over, trying to hinder you from whatever “mission” you may have at the time, and also contribute to our lack of complete understanding. One cannot simply assume they understand everything come any given situation. That will surely set you, and others, up for failure. We must ALWAYS strive for perfection in everything we do, most importantly in seeking to understand. Understand the complete situation, as well as understand yourself – strengths, limitations, and weaknesses, and that you are NOT perfect.

I didn’t want to cool the PAX down too much, so off we went…..

Now for The Thang – the Solar System of Gloom:

There were two main cones set at opposite curves of the track, Two more cones were set inside the track at each of the curves’ center of radius, a distance of about 10-12 or so yards. Total distance around the track I heard was approx 1/8 mile. One cone had odd numbered exercises, the other even numbered. Completing an odd-even set will complete the track “orbit”. So we did a tour of our solar system, with a little extra:

Exercise # / Planet / Pain:

  1. Mercury – 25 Merkins
  2. Venus – 25 LBCs
  3. Earth – Long jump to the moon (the cone) and back
  4. Mars – 25 CDDs
  5. Jupiter – 25 American hammers
  6. Saturn – Bear crawl to its outer rings (the cone) and back
  7. Uranus – 20 Monkey humpers (that got laughs from the PAX)
  8. Neptune – 25 plank jacks
  9. Pluto (yes I still consider it a planet!) – 20 LSS
  10. Pick your poison x 20

Rinse and repeat as much as possible. Even with all the running…..and running is resting….between the pain everyone got one complete round in, most got 1.5, and some even completed two full rounds. GREAT job by all!! There was alot of mumblechatter and laughter from the group as usual, and everyone pushed and encouraged each other, while never leaving the 6 behind all alone. This is the way to work out! People solely in the gyms do not know what they are missing.

Mosey off to find a wall…..

  • Wall sits for 20 LONG seconds, squatting lower midway
  • BTTW for 20 LONG seconds

Quick motivating message, then off to…..??? A VQ dilemma of not managing time properly. What to do???!! Sugar Honey Iced Tea!! Well, a week or so ago Bones Q’d a heck of a workout at the Abyss, including some painful hill sprints. As we were jogging, I mentioned to him about the hill sprints and how they helped strengthen my beanpoles of legs for the trail running I have become hooked on. His response “We have time, let’s do some”. So…..

Mosey to the Hills of Gloom….

  • Sprint up to the top of the nice steep, long hill
  • 5 SSHs at top, then quickly back down – hopefully on your feet
  • RnR for about 5 minutes nonstop OYO
  • There will be more next time….
  • Feel the burn baby!

1.75 minutes left…..mosey to……hey, are those picnic tables?

  • 25 dips or more OYO

Then back to COT right at 6.

EXCELLENT job by the PAX! It was inspirational to say the least, and an honor to lead leaders.

The Message:

During the orbits, I reminded everyone about the Jester. Royale had a quite powerful message on a recent Abyss workout he Q’d. Read it here: http://f3nation.com/2016/09/08/thejester0907/ The Jester is ALWAYS hanging around you, telling you are not worthy, you cannot achieve, to stop and just simply play with him. During the pain of The Thang I reminded the PAX to NEVER lie with the Jester, despite your imperfections and weaknesses. Understand them, acknowledge them, and use those as your motivators to improve. Never be complacent in your seeking to understand, of yourself or any situation, for that is when the Jester has you. Seek understanding always.

Last month’s theme was about grace – giving love when it is clearly not deserved. This month it is mercy – withholding punishment or retribution when it is clearly deserved. Two things that greatly affect how and when we as humans show mercy – if at all – is pride and judgement. Judgement can be more sound through greater understanding. God made us as a perfect image of Him, yet we are anything but perfect. Through His power He shows infinite understanding and forgiveness through His grace and mercy towards our sin.

This is where we fail miserably sometimes. In the era of social everything, instant whatever, and constant yet impersonal connectivity it is so easy to spew the three C’s – condemn, criticize, and complain – and render judgement based on what little understanding we have. In doing so we can also tip our hands of our prejudices. The protests and riots in Charlotte recently are a good example. The general label they are given can be one of thuggery and what not. I do not believe this is so. I will never be able to fully understand their pains and what drove the riots, but I owe them the respect all humans deserve in showing empathy and seeking to understand before passing judgement towards my use of grace and/or mercy.

When we are thrust into any situation, whether voluntarily or not, we must always first seek to understand completely and fully, and challenge our prejudices. Be open to where this may come from as well. When we do this, it will give amazing clarity as to how and when show grace or mercy.

T-Claps from the VQ:

368 days ago to this day I had some (to me) major surgery on my spine, a C5-6 ACDF. It messed me up, even though it fixed me up. I was out of action for months, and that got me soft physically and weak mentally. I never before felt like this and did not know how to take it. My close friends Mr T and Qwerty kept me going, encouraging me, inspiring me, motivating me to get better in every way. They kept telling me about F3, trying to get me out. 5:15am??!!! WTF??!! Big bag of nope yo. But they never gave up on me. Finally on June 29 at the Pantheon on June 29 under a great (i.e., harsh) Q by Jekyll, I be the FNG! I admit the first 2-3 weeks were damn rough, But despite the pain from the first F, it was the 2nd and 3rd F’s that got me hooked and kept me coming back.

That is what F3 is about to me. There are so many HIMs in the PAX I have met since then. To single out some will be a disrespect to the others. Each and every one of them through any of their 3Fs have invigorated and inspired me. I owe gratitude towards everyone who helped Q me to where I am now, whichever of the F’s they Q’d. We all may not Q a post, but we can all Q each other in many ways.

AYE!!

Calls for Mercy at the Ballroom

  • QIC: Old Bay
  • When: 10/04/2016
  • Pax: Chedda, Anchorman, Barry Manilo, Ditchwitch, Trail Mix, Newman, Bassomatic, Mainframe, Gilmore, Bait Shop (FNG), Elmer, Gopher, CottenEye, Culture Club, OldBay
  • Posted In: The Ballroom

15 Ballroom Boyz gathered for a refreshingly cool morning of moderate dancing. Disclaimer was issued in earnest and the pax lined up for a crisscross applesauce run down to the furtherest lower lot at the bottom of the business park.

Warm-up

Pax circled up for a few words on our theme of the month: Mercy.

– SSH (IC) x20
– IW (IC) x20
– ==> Lunge walk for 10 yards, then mosey half way around lot
– Low-Slow Squats (IC) x20
– Windmills (IC) x20
– ==> Toy soldier for 10 yards, then mosey half way around lot
– Mountain climbers (IC) x20
– Peter Parkers (IC) x20
– ==> Bearcrawl for 10 yards, then mosey half way around lot
– Carolina Dry Docks (IC) x20
– 5 Burpees OYO

Mosey up to middle “flat” parking lot for railroad tracks (about 2 rotations through)

The Thang

Mosey to the parking lot below the COT area (with the double wall). Another quick word on Mercy, and Pax organized themselves into five groups of three for a few rounds of Tripple-Check.

– 1st person doing wall sit
– 2nd person exercise specified for that particular round (see below)
– 3rd person scaling walls, then running to the right, down around the stop sign, and back to his team
– rotation positions until all three pax in each group had done each exercise
– plank up when done with the specific round

We did a total of 5 round, with the “specified exercise” being the following (one for each round)

– LBCs
– Merkins
– Squats
– Flutters
– Calf raises

After all 5 rounds, pax scaled wall one more time and circled up for a little Mary in the COT area.

Seniors choice for ab work:

– LBCs
– SSH
– American hammers

Time’s up. COT.

Naked Man Moleskin
YHC has a special affinity for the Ballroom because of the #HIMs that post there, and because the scaling wall is a real treat. This morning was no exception, and we had the bonus of FNG “Bait Shop” joining us (excellent work!!!). Add in the absolutely perfect weather, and we had a recipe #awesomesauce. It was a privilege leading the workout, and YHC appreciates the opportunity (thanks for scheduling me, ChangeOrder).

During the workout, we discussed the monthly theme of Mercy. For YHC, mercy is a little more difficult to grasp than the other two of the trifecta: justice and grace. Mercy is not giving something when it is deserved (like punishment, retribution, or hell). Mercy is a sense of empathy or pity. But it is something we do, not just something we feel. It is a sense of pity, plus action. Many cultures, including that of the Romans, and that of ours today, see mercy as weakness. I suspect this is due to the competitive, prideful nature of society, which focuses on sports, shocking media, and a worldly definition of “success”. Name 5 great movies about mercy. I can’t.

We as follower of Christ are to have a different perspective of mercy. Greg Laurie said “Sometimes we think people who are quick to condemn are very spiritual. But it is actually quite the opposite. When you truly are a spiritual person, when you truly are a godly man or woman, then you will be a merciful person—not a critical or condemning one.”

In Chicken Hawk’s Mercy theme document, he says something that really stuck with me. “Don’t be mistaken by the reality that the person you are called to have mercy on does not deserve it.” I dare you to really thing about this next time you get in your car and drive somewhere.

As a final thought – The theme-of-the-month concept and document that Chicken Hawk puts together every month is truly a fantastic resource for all Pax. I strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this. Read it, print it up, discuss it with your wife and/or family, and tape it to the refrigerator. There is no excuse not to. It couldn’t be teed up any better.

Partner Day at the Deep

  • QIC: Royale
  • When: 10/01/2016
  • Pax: Wild Thing, Witch Hunt, Kenyan (respect), Tater (respect), Royale (QIC)
  • Posted In: The Deep

It was finally a cool day in Charlotte. It was surely the first day under 60 degrees at 6:30am since last winter! It was so “cold” that Witch Hunt refused to get out of his car early…and then put a sweatshirt on! I’m looking forward to how he handles those rainy 35 degree winter days! My Weinke was set up for a bunch of partner work so I was hoping for a even number of PAX.

When it was that start time…we had 5. No luck on the large crowd OR the even number! I have to stop promoting how awful my workouts will be on twitter. Small disclaimer about something…time to mosey!

Headed off the plantation to the Elementary school track.

COP – 25 SSH – 20 IWs – 30 MNCs – 10 WA Merkins – 15 Parker Peters – 20 MCs – 20 LS Squats

1st pain station
Dora 1-2-3
Partner Up
Partner #1 run a full lap around the track
Partner #2 Complete 100 Merkins then 200 American Hammers finally 300 Squats
Switch on the laps add cumulative totals

Shared a piece about Partners, accountability and the bonds we get to make with the PAX of F3. That’s what keeps me coming out here 5-6 days a week. Like Puddles had said the day before, it’s about the men now more than the workout!

Mosey to Painstation #2 back at Oakridge

Quadzillas with a twist
Partner #1 run down the hill and back up backwards
Partner #2 Burpees
Do this trade off for 5 minutes (real crowd pleaser)

Mosey to Painstation #3 on soccer field
Partner wheelbarrow from goal to goal. Partner switch when needed
Next OPEN wheelbarrow (partner holds legs while you face him on hands. Hard tricep work. (thanks Gekko!) All 5 of us hated this one…
Partner Fireman carries on the return

Mosey to COT for Ab Lab

PAX called out ab exercises and each led in cadence until the hour was up.

Announcements
Ragnar Trail Run next weekend
Region Split update from Invergence
MudRun 10/15

Prayers
We each gave a prayer that was on our heart, another great thing F3 helps us not to carry on our own.

Here are my notes from this morning (all credit to Tiger Rag and his Team from South Charlotte-Area 51)

Q101 – Training for the Workout Leader
PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is two-fold:
1. To assist the new Q in preparing for and leading his first workout, and
2. To serve as a standard to evaluate experienced Q performance.

PHILOSOPHY
1. Q – Pax Relationship: The unspoken social contract between the Pax and a Q: “We will follow until you give us a reason not to.” Implicit trust for the inexperienced (as opposed to the unqualified) Trust based.
a. Breach of trust may include:
i. Doing stupid stuff: partner carries up/down wet hills, log relay races.
ii. Too hard: Trying to run the pax into the ground with needlessly difficult exercises, unreasonable reps, etc.
iii. Too easy: most guys want to be challenged and pushed
iv. Too complicated: lots of explanations, confusing sets, too much standing around.
The Pax are very forgiving toward a new Q. Most have been through it and understand the anxiety.

PREPARATION
Creating a safe, tough workout for the fittest Pax to the most out of shape is a challenge. Preparation and flexibility is key.
1. Types of Workouts –
a. A well-balanced workout would ideally consist of a quick warm up, strength, cardio and core.
b. Talk to your Site Q for specialty workouts such as gear, KB, running, rucking, etc.

2. Workout Promotion
a. PreBlast- write up for when you need to convey information about the upcoming workout. Information like site change, new site or new Q advertising, gear (bring KB), etc.
b. Twitter-essential to communicate and promote your site or workout.

3. Simplicity/Complexity and Originality
a. Keep the Weinke simple. The fewer moving parts the better.
b. Keep it familiar. New exercises or sets that require more than the briefest of explanations usually lead to confusion.
c. Don’t be shy about stealing a Weinke, or parts of a Weinke, from another more-experienced Q.

4. Form and Counts
a. While the Q needn’t be a direct Form Enforcer, he can indirectly enforce good form in three major ways:
i. Exemplify good form himself during exercise. Don’t short-arm a merkin, go full range of motion, etc.
ii. Slow down the exercise, either by slowing cadence count, or by using a 3 down/1 up variation (e.g., 3 count to bottom of squat, 1 count up). “Thrash counting” or counting too fast for the exercise being called leads to bad form or refusenik behavior from the Pax.
iii. NOTE: Almost all cadence counting in F3 is too fast. Counting too slow is almost never a bad thing.

5. Go with strengths
a. Don’t Q it if you can’t do it.
b. Corollary: Just because YOU can do it doesn’t necessarily mean you should Q it. Just because you are a pull up monster doesn’t mean you should subject the Pax to 100 pull ups. You might be a beast on diamond merkins, but calling 50 for the Pax may not be right call.
c. If you want to try a new exercise, make sure you demo it properly as well as the counting with it (cadence, civilian, OYO)

6. Cadence Counting
a. When the Q leads the Pax in an exercise (that requires counting) he should do it in a cadence count. The correct procedure is as follows:
i. Next exercise is [brief pause], the merkin.
• The Pax then repeats the exercise called.
• Speak loudly so all Pax can hear. You are in charge.
ii. Start(ing) position [brief pause], Move.
• Not “exercise” position. Start position.
• The “Move” is to get the Pax to the position required to begin exercise. The “Move” is not a command to begin exercising.
iii. In cadence [brief pause], Exercise.
• In cadence simply means the Q counts the movements (1-2-3) and the Pax calls out the repetitions in unison (“One!”).
• The Q counts should correspond to a distinct movement in the exercise. It is in rhythm. For example, for a merkin: “1” is the movement to the down position, “2” is the movement to the plank position, “3” is the movement back to the down position, the Pax call of “One!” is the move back to plank position.
• The Q indicates the completion of an exercise by a higher inflection on his last repetition.
See Dredd’s excellent tutorial on the how and why of cadence counting: http://f3nation.com/2012/02/22/f3-tv-how-to-count/
b. NOTE: When a Q does not lead an exercise in cadence that would normally be done that way, he is giving away his authority to lead the Pax. He is implicitly telling the Pax that he not able to count in cadence or is not willing to learn.

7. Dry Runs / Practice
a. Cadence Counting:
i. Memorize the three commands. Practice them in the car, say them to yourself in shower, etc. Get them down pat. We are striving for uniformity across all sites, not to mention across all regions in F3.
ii. Practice counting while exercising. A number of first time Qs say after their first workout that they were surprised how hard it was to count and exercise at the same time. Practice this sample COP (Circle of Pain) in cadence count:
• Side Straddle Hop
• Merkins
• Imperial Walkers (these trip up some people)
• Squats
• Mountain Climbers (these have a tendency to be a Q Self-Smoker)
iii. There may be times that a dry run of the Weinke, or at least parts of it, is a good idea. It helps you work out logistics such as timing and transitions.

8. Weinke review with Site Q or experienced Q
a. Work with the Site Q or one of his delegates to help troubleshoot your first Weinke or two. The Site Q is an invaluable source in helping spot potential kinks in the plan.

9. Scalability –A scalable workout is one that is tough for the strongest of Pax, while at the same time not over-smoking the back of the pack. All workouts are no drop; without exception. Under no circumstance should we ever leave a Pax alone.
a. Larry Birds: According to the F3 Lexicon, a Larry Bird is a Pax that finishes an exercise before the Q (in running, or on your own (OYO) exercises). There are multiple ways of handling Larry Birds:
i. Do Nothing: Larry Birds are usually veterans that will plank up while waiting for the rest of the Pax to come in. This is the default setting for F3 Vets.
ii. Extra work: Assign them extra exercises at the end of the set (do burpees until everyone gets in) or more exercises during the set (do 9 reps per station on The Beast instead of 6, or a Jacob’s Ladder from 4-10 instead of 1-7).
b. The Six: The guys in the back. The Pax in the Six are generally less adept at running and will usually benefit from “chunking”: a cluster of exercises in one place followed by a short mosey to another place. For many average to above-average Pax, the mosey from spot to spot is a recovery time. For the Six, it can be the most strenuous.
i. Limit the location changes, or keep them close together;
ii. If you know you are going to cover ground, appoint a sweeper(s) who will stay at the rear with the Six.
iii. Alternatively, circle back as a group and pick them up. This applies in particular to off campus runs (say from DV to Davie) or at any of the running workouts.

10. Too long, too short
a. It takes a few times go get a good feel for how long your Weinke will take to execute. If it appears that it’s going to take too long, cut it short.
b. If you’ve run out of Weinke after 20 minutes, always have a couple of stand by exercises ready in the wings, such as a Jacob’s Ladder, The Beast, Partner 100’s, etc. All these exercises are strenuous, time-eaters and don’t have to be lead by the Q.

11. Too many people, too few
a. If you’ve planned your Weinke for 15 people, will it still work for 25? For 7? Gear workouts are harder to scale.

12. Transitions, dead time, standing around
a. Transitions are often overlooked by new Qs. Getting from one place to another takes time, especially if you have some Clydesdales.
b. Dead Time – if you need to count off the Pax into groups of twos, it’s much quicker and easier to tell people a few minutes ahead of time to partner up. Counting off, especially in large groups, is dead time. Consider having everyone get into a 6″ plank and count off. Once they count, the go to a normal plank. The point it to avoid standing around.

13. Tap a vet – if you need time to get unsmoked or burned through Weinke in 30 minutes, there’s no shame in asking a vet to lead Mary or the next section of the workout.

EXECUTION
1. Arrive Early – Be the first on site; use time to set up if necessary.

2. Meet and Greet – welcome the Pax as they come in. Introduce yourself to Pax you don’t know. Get a buzz going early. Wake them up, get energy up. The workout Q sets the tone for the Pax—if the Q is flat, the workout will likely be flat. If the Q is amped up, the workout will benefit as a result. An amped Q with an average Weinke beats a Flat Q with a great Weinke.

3. Survey and assess the Pax prior to the start
a. Do you have any guys that are not runners, or who might otherwise be consigned to the Six? How does that fit with your Weinke? Can you still pull it off?
b. Tap Sweepers – talk to the Site Q and other vets who can act as Sweepers if needed.

4. T-Minus warning – 2 minute / 1 minute / 30 sec warnings are typical.

5. Starting on time – waiting for latecomers reinforces tardiness. Start exactly on time, every time. Use your discretion if you are going off campus, such that latecomers wouldn’t likely find the group.

6. FNG inquiry and Disclaimer – every workout should start with an FNG Inquiry and Dislaimer
a. FNG Inquiry: “Are there any new guys here today?”
i. This alerts the Q to guys who may become smoked quickly and need a sweeper. The Sweeper for an FNG should ideally be the EHer.
ii. This alerts the Site Q and Pax to welcome the FNG, talk to them during the workout, start intel re nicknames, etc.
b. Disclaimer:
i. Why: We want to disclaimer in front of Pax because having witnesses adds a layer of protection above asking if they’ve read it on the website.
ii. What: Main points in your own words:
1. I am not a professional
2. This is self-policing: Stop or modify the exercises as required

7. Take control—be the leader. Be assertive, don’t mumble. If something doesn’t work and you have to audible, acknowledge it and move on to the next exercise. Don’t apologize, just move on.

8. Observation – Do your best to keep an eye on the pax during the workout to see if you are losing people, either from it being too easy, too confusing, or too hard. During your first few Qs, it is hard enough just to make it through the workout. Ask your Site Q or another experienced Q to keep an eye on things and whisper in your ear if needed.

9. Q Jackers – experienced Qs who attempt to hijack an exercise (or twelve). Some Q jackers are poking the Q. Others are offering you an out on a questionable call. Sometimes you can’t tell—use your discretion. Q Jacking can make for a good diversion from the Weinke, in addition to making for good backblast fodder. Not all Q Jacks are bad.

10. Modifications – Whether due to injury or personal preference, many veteran Pax will choose to modify exercises. Newer Pax are more likely to follow along more or less blindly. Therefore, occasionally remind the Pax about modifications, on strenuous cardio (Jacob’s Ladder) or strength exercises (partner carries), as required.

11. Ten Counts – Use sparingly, but often as needed.

12. Observations – keep an eye and ear out for anecdotes and fodder for the Backblast. New Qs may need assistance from the Site Q or others prior to posting.

13. Surroundings- Keep in mind your surroundings, we workout in the early hours and sometimes near sleeping neighborhoods. Some places you need to keep the mumble chatter down or cadence count at a lower volume.

14. Finish on time – make every effort to finish at the designated finish time. Finishing late is a sign of disrespect for the Pax’s time.
a. Finishing Late: It happens. Make a quick COT, limit announcements.
b. Finishing Early: Do some extra Mary, have pax call out exercises, do 3 minutes of burpees, etc. Finish it out.

15. Circle of Trust (COT).
a. Q stands in the middle.
b. Number-ama
c. Name-O-Rama – workout Q is responsible for getting names down. Having phone or pen and paper handy to avoid delay of running to car, etc.
d. Announcements – ask for announcements from Pax (they will be recorded in backblast)
e. Take out (prayer). 51 practice is to ball of man; varies by region. Ask for a volunteer to pray.

FOLLOW UP
1. Twitter counts – check with Site Q on whether he or the Q will tweet the count. Remember to use workout tag (i.e., #F3SkunkWorks) and the #TheFortCounts tag.

2. Backblast –
a. Part of the workout Qs responsibility to post the Backblast, not the Site Q. The Site Q may volunteer to post the Qs first workout on his behalf but that is at his discretion .
b. Get backblast credentials BEFORE first Q so that you are prepared to write up BB when it’s done. The website interface is not difficult and will take only a few minutes to learn. Here again, your Site Q will be an invaluable aid in assisting you to post your first BB.
c. Get login credentials from the A51 Comz Team at f3area51+login@gmail.com
d. Format – varies but generally takes the form of:
i. Intro – How many guys and a teaser of something to come
ii. Workout summary
iii. Moleskine – a review of noteworthy events or anecdotes.
iv. Announcements

The workout summary are the facts of what happened. The Moleskine is story and people read the backblasts for the story. Make it fun.

Three Tips for a Quality BB:
• Do something interesting at the workout;
• Be interesting (it’s too late now—you either are or aren’t);
• Make up something interesting. Oftentimes the best anectdotes are the ones that are only mostly true…don’t let facts get in the way of a good story.

e. Pax List – When an FNG posts, list first name and last initial, or just the FNG’s new F3 name. For the sake of privacy, do not use the FNGs first and last name on the internet.
i. Be sure to get any FNG’s contact information to add to the Area51 gmail contact list. Relay it to the site Q who can add them as well as send them a welcome email.
f. General –
i. Most Qs post the backblast the same day of the workout, almost always within 24 hours.
ii. People like to read their names on the website. Call out exemplary performances by name. Be wary of belittling people in the backblast unless you know the guy really well and he’s known to have thick skin (Chelms, TR, Radar, etc.)

3. After Action Report – follow up with your Site Q about what went right, what could be improved, what was a disaster, etc. Seek out honest feedback from other veteran Q and Pax. The best way to improve is to address your weaknesses head on.

4. Observe – when you are not leading a workout, notice how other Qs lead their workouts. Pick out the things you like and file them away for later. Talk to them about why they did it the way they did.

Mile Repeats at Laces Out

  • QIC: Sir Topham Hatt
  • When: 09/29/16
  • Pax: Boeheim, Rooney, Deacon, Old Bay, Blades, Cakeboss, MacGyver, Hi-Hat, Sir Topham Hatt
  • Posted In: Laces Out

9 Pax took to the track for some mile repeats on a beautiful morning at Laces Out.

The Thang:

WU: Mile warm up pace around the track.

Run 1 mile at a 10k or 5K race pace.  Quarter mile recovery.  Rinse and repeat until 5:45.  Slow cool down mile to close it out.  I believe some got 3 or 4 in?

NMM: Sounds easy but mile repeats hurt.  I’m glad I was recovering and got to take it easy. The rest of the pax had the honor of chasing Blades around the track most of the morning.  Blades is new to The Fort coming from Metro but not new to running I assure you.  Glad to have you and hope to see you back!

It was good catching up with you Cakeboss and Deacon.  I asked Deacon how Ray was doing (The 7 yr old boy who passed away last Wednesday night who was in Deacon’s Lifegroup).  Not knowing at the time that Ray had gone to be with his Creator just a few hours before.  I only had the privilege of meeting Ray once.  But being around him for that short time really showed me how precious life can be.  Even though my time with him was short, his passing has really rocked me.  The death of a child is something I have a really hard time wrapping my head around.  So many questions why an innocent sole would need to be taken early.  This is one that constantly challenges my Faith in the Lord.  I know I have to trust in God and his plan is the right plan even if it makes no sense to me.  Matthew 19:14  Deacon said it’s funny how I kid like that ends up teaching you about Faith and Grace thru God.  #perspective  Thank you Deacon for the impact you made on Ray’s life.

Prayers for Ray’s family as they deal with their loss.  Also Cakeboss’s sister and her battle with cancer.

Announcements: read the newsletter

Until next time

BB or it didn’t happen

  • QIC: Tesh
  • When: 10/04/16
  • Pax: Mission Impossible, Fridge, Snaphook, Double Dribble, Bubba Gump, Deacon, Greenwave, Crosscheck, Ginsu, Tesh
  • Posted In: The Colosseum

Warmup

Mosey to halfwall by playground
SSH x30
Windmill x20
Vertical Merkins on half wall till failure (lower chest to top of wall and back up is 1)
Wall sit 1:30, jog across parking lot and back
Vertical Merkins till failure
Mosey to football field

The Thang

Dora with 100x pushups, 200x situps, 300x squats
Mosey to hill
Bearcrawl up hill to wall and hold balls to walls
Armlock with backs to hill, Backpedal up hill (aka Bernie Sanders I’m told) x5 (it burns…)
Bearcrawl to ballstowalls again
Burpees x10 OYO
Seal Team (armlock) situps x30
Mosey to COT

6MOM

Freddy Mercury’s x20
Protractor
American Hammer x20

Naked Moleskin

This turned out to be a fairly well rounded workout.  I always wing it, so its like cooking a soup with whatever you can pull out of the fridge: you never know how it’s going to turn out till you taste it.  This armlocked workout brought to you by the third ring.  I kinda stumbled over the exact terms but here they are:
1. First Ring: M (wife)
2. Second Ring: Shorties (children)
3. Third Ring: Shield Lock (brothers in arms)
4. Fourth Ring: Blades (younger men)
5. Fifth Ring: Mammon (work)

Prayers go out to Ginsu’s 2.0 that has “minor” surgery today;  (As a parent, I never consider it minor…)  Deacon is headed off to South America, safe travels brother;

Lastly, if you Q, write a backblast.  The Fort is at a 50% completion rate… That’s unacceptable IMHO.  In videogame culture theres a phrase ‘screenshot or it didn’t happen,’ and this applies to workouts too.  Backblast or it didn’t happen.  I look back at the Swamp Rabbit BB on my first workout, and I see my name with the FNG tag.  I have vivid memories swell up when I read the backblast.  If you don’t post a backblast with an FNG, YOU ARE STEALING SOMETHING FROM HIM.

Oldtowne Original 7 CONVERGENCE

  • QIC: Apache
  • When: 10/3/6
  • Pax: Spartacus, Popeye, Roxanne, Reborn, Pap eye, Anchor Bar, Dream house, Dawg Pound, Schrute, The Riddler, Falcon FNG, Sapper, Smiley face, Cspan, Package, Chuckie, Jag, Money Bags, Italian Job, Corruption, Mayhem, Kindergarten Cop, Dingo, YHC

YHC had the Honor of leading the leaders of F3 Nation at one of my favorites AO “The Oldtowne”, in the scenic downtown of Rock Hill. Our HIM Posh has been down range with a heck of a work schedule and could not Q the said event and I was honestly humbled and honored to have been even considered with so many HIMs available….

A little history about the AO: It was launched on Feb. 2, 2015 and Double D and pusher Qed the first two workouts. So I took from their backblast a few ideas and incorporated those into today’s activities.

I gave the disclaimer and we had 1 FNG amongst the 24 Pax including YHC.

We divided into 2 groups to Indian Merkin run and took a tour of Oldtowne and stopping at each of the following and preforming THE THANG:

  1. Open field across Dave Lyle near The Herald Newspaper
  2. Flag pole for pledge allegiance in cadence McHale’s
  3. New work out area called “The Echo Chamber” at City Hall
  4. Fountain park
  5. “Hot Box” Parking Deck

THE THANG:

  • Plenty of SSH in cadence
  • Plenty of Merkins in cadence
  • Plenty of burbees OYO
  • Ring of fire Merkins 3 rounds
  • And finally a little play time in the HOT BOX

At the end we Jail broke back to COT and the fast Gents circled back and picked up the “6” because NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND!!!!

It was a great morning and really proud of how far we have come as a F3 family, I spoke on how everyone is shown mercy thru the grace of God and we must try and leave that positive finger print on everyone you come in contact with. You really don’t know who you might be inspiring…..

  • Spartacus: You have come into F3 and made it yours with your positive attitude and reinforcement at each workout
  • Popeye: what can I say you really are one of my closes friends that I depend on daily and this morning really keep me on my toes
  • Roxanne: Dude your improvement is unreal and we need to get you on Q list again soon

  • Dawg Pound: True leader that really puts his work in. Great job Brother
  • Schrute: What can I say you are a true Leader that ask for no rewards or honors. There is so much that you do, that so far behind the scenes its like you work for The CIA.. Thanks brother
  • The Riddler: We have come a long way Baby!! Keep up being the leader and just think how far we will be next year little brother
  • FNG Falcon: Wow you killed it today. Great work and cant wait to sharpen Iron in the future

  • Money Bags: Wow you are fast and getting faster great work out there and we need you a Q schedule pronto
  • Italian Job: always that guy to give 110% and never forget the 6. A guy that everyone can count on and be the leader of leaders. Thanks my brother another behind the scenes HIM that keeps me grounded and humbled
  • Corruption: You are the guy that is always looking for consistent improvement in the F3 thang. You are the pusher and the pulling force in the workouts and everyone can depend on to never leave them behind, thanks brother
  • Mayhem: One of the Originals that I want to thank for bringing this F3 thing to Rock Hill. An awesome leader among the leaders of our region that everyone can and does depend on. Thanks for locking shields with us in the gloom. And yes the cold weather is coming
  • Kindergarten Cop: You killed it today brother. Thanks for your work and the improvement is really showing, we need more Q’s from my little brother
  • Pad eye: WOW!!! You rocked it my brother. The gloom is really paying off. You completed one of the toughest AO’s around and killed. Awesome Job
  • Reborn: Thanks for being that guy that me and everyone else can count on. You are one of the truest High Impact Males I have known. Thanks for your constant push and pull brother.

4 years @F3TheFort

Friday night we celebrated 4 years @F3TheFort

Saturday morning it was my honor to Q with @Double_D where it all started

Lots of cars rolling into WEP, started to realize something about a volleyball tournament…I attempted the EH, tried to “bully” them into joining us, and much to my surprise, and they again reviewed their lack of interest in detail…and they think we are weird?

Disclaimer

Lots of #mumblechatter, very expressive group of PAX today, short discussion on how “perfect” @CableGuys hair was and we were off, at a very quick pace. Ginsu reminded me that I am not as fast as I used to be

Mosey to Gun Lot, COP with all of my favorites to 10 in cadence.

Mosey to Veterans Park, said The Pledge of Allegiance in cadence. 10 Flying Squirrels

Mosey to ATM lot, bear crawl, lunge walk, backwards bear, and crab walk back across the lot, and rinse and repeat. 10 Flying Squirrels

Mosey to HOBO’s lot Sermon #1, 10 Flying Squirrels

Mosey to Police Station Lot, partner up, extreme #Arloader series, and a mix of @F3TheFort #Trivia which all equated to 10 Flying Squirrels, probably stayed for about 40 Squirrels

Sermon #2

Hand off to Double D

Mosey to Jazzercise Wall for the People’s Chair series and 10 Flying Squirrels

Mosey to Confederate Park for more partner relays and runs to the train tracks

Mosey back to Veterans Park, long plank-o-rama series, lots of #mumblechatter, mostly from Santini and anyone within ear shot

Mosey back to Gun Lot for 4 corners of pain with a mix of sprints

Mosey to The Grove for Makhtar’Diayes until your elbows bleed from the pine cones

AYG sprint to COT

COT/ Prayer and Praise / BOM

Naked Man Moleskine

Great way to celebrate 4 years of F3 with a shared Q with Double-D. The PAX were great and we had a bunch of #mumblechatter, and it seemed like everyone had a great time. Lots of discussions and sermons as we moseyed around downtown Fort Mill. The first #sermon is practice your EH and continue to bring out FNGs. The second #sermon consisted of my story where Santini #EH me, but it was Double-D that got me to show back after my third or fourth post, so in reality those #HIM are as important as the men who bring out an FNG. Double-D had the third sermon on becoming a Q and learning to get confident leading other men. The final sermon was mine in COT about the tenacity and genital fortitude it took Double-D to launch a Region that in 4 years has eclipsed over 900 men, and has now split into 2 Regions (Fort Mill & Rock Hill). Double-D shares that he was not sure F3 would work, and all of the sudden…it crushed the sad clown syndrome @F3TheFort and surrounding areas. Double-D thinks we are just getting in step, are you ready for the future?

Trailgate

  • QIC: Minuteman
  • When: 10/02/16
  • Pax: Minuteman, Tesh, Tumblr (FNG), Dynasty (FNG)
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

Spud is downrange, so Minuteman carried the torch.

Warmup

Discussion / preparation.

The Thang

We ran to the river, and we ran back.

QIC got lost on the way back for a little extra credit.

Naked Moleskin

Honestly, come out to this.  Running in the woods is a lot of fun.  You won’t be setting any pace records, because there are some pinch points, but I for one find trails much more enjoyable than the road.

Welcome to the FNGs.  I hope they stay plugged in.  Go do a #CSAUP!

Coliseum – Identity and HOPE in Sky Q not in Bourne or Cake Boss

  • QIC: Cake Boss & Bourne
  • When: 9/27/16
  • Pax: Senator Tressel, Stang, Photobomb, Atticus, Double Dribble, On the Rocks, Seacrest, Tesh, Lil E, Bourne, Cake Boss
  • Posted In: The Colosseum

After a rough week in our neighboring city to the north and with the presidential debate Monday night, 11 PAX came to the Coliseum to work off some tension and maybe find some HOPE as it seems to be diminishing each day. However, with Sky Q and F3 there is always HOPE, as we know we are blessed by a Sky Q that gives us everything and we have brothers along each side of us that never leave us behind. Bourne and I collaborated on a beat down and a message of hope that we meant for encouragement in a time that seems dark but Sky Q sent a light for us all and that light is all we need to get through any storm!

The Thang:

Mosey to back of Middle School for for COP:

  • SSHs
  • Merkins
  • Imperial Walkers
  • Wide Arm Merkins
  • Hillbilly Walkers
  • Squats
  • Mountain Climbers
  • (Stang was bitching we were too quiet and not “Apache” enough)
  • Plank series
  • More SSHs
  • couple other things

Mosey over to Basketball court lot

  • Count off in 1’s and 2’s
    • 1’s run suicide while 2’s do squats
    • flapjack
    • 1’s run suicide while 2’s do Imperial Walkers
    • flapjack
    • 1’s run suicide w/5 burpess at each stop while 2’s do sumo squats
    • flapjack

Hand off to the man!

Borne take over at the Q:

Divided into teams of two.

1. Dora team Merkins:
40 Diamond
50 regular,
60 wide arm. Partner ran wide around parking lot.

2. Recovery phase:
One partner rest with forearm planks, second partner light jog around parking lot. Switch.
Apache 10 count… Secrest shared a little bit about himself.

3. Switch partners.
Tell each other about your M & 2.0s or something else about yourself if you’re not married.
Partner Doris:
100 sidesaddle hops,
200 overhead clamps,
300 calf raises.

4. Mosey to wall. Wall squats with Indian run beer crawls. Three sets.

Cot:
Jn 15:1-4. announcements, prayer request, telling about the other partner’s M and 2.0

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15

We talked about hope and finding hope in Jesus as in these dark times it is so easy to focus on the negative and sink to low places, however if we abide in JC and he in us, we can’t help but be grateful and blessed with everything he has given to us. We still live in a great country and have so much, so why would we lose hope in the one that paid it all for all of us!

Have a great week! Thanks Seacrest for the lead!

CB & Bourne
