A Walker Texas Ranger Beatdown

  • QIC: Italian Job, Walker
  • When: 3/14/15
  • Pax: Twister, Private Ryan, Bogey, Mayhem, Italian Job, Walker
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

This morning 6 men braved soggy conditions to enjoy a beating thrown down by Italian Job and Walker (his virgin Q). You lazy bums that stayed in bed missed a good one (looking at you Burgundy, Posh, Fusion, Padre, Wichester, Cheeto, Bandit, and Pusher).

Warmup

25 SSH

25 Squats

25 Merkins

25 Mountain Climbers

25 Plank Jacks

25 Moroccan Night Clubs

10 Burpees OYO

Mosey to the wall

1 minute People’s Chair

Balls to the Wall

1 minute People’s Chair

Balls to the Wall

Mosey around the school

25 Dips

20 Derkins

20 Step Ups

25 Calf Raises

15 Cliff Hanger Merkins (1 arm pushups on the handrail) x2

Handoff to Walker

Mosey and circle up

25 Merkins

20 Single Count Jump Squats

15 Carolina Dry Docks

20 Jump Lunges

25 Diamond Merkins

4 Corners (5x)

Sprint the length of the parking lot

Karaoke to the next corner

Sprint the length of the parking lot

Karaoke to the next corner

Circle Up

6 Inches for what seemed like an hour

25 Freddy Mercury

2 Minute Plank

25 Crunchy Frogs (not as fun as it sounds)

This is where the exercise got fun. Walker is a certified personal trainer. He treated us to a few minutes of isometric strength training that all you fart sackers missed. We did 4 rounds of chest squeeze, 4 rounds of biceps, and 4 rounds of what I like to call “Walker’s Pole Work.” Basically you use your own body as resistance to strengthen muscles (pushing and pulling simultaneously). By looking at how cut Walker is at 53, that stuff works.

We finished with a long Indian Run around the school and 3 minutes of dealer’s choice ab lab (LBCs, Bombjacks, Hip Thrusts).

Great virgin Q today by Walker and great job gentlemen to show up in the rain (even if Private Ryan didn’t know it was raining when he got up). Glad to lead you men today and proud of the hard work you put in. Keep up the hard work fellas!

Feeling Fab at Cardiac Rehab!

1 Pax showed up for cardiac rehab this morning (there were other people, but no one else from F3).  It is my new gloom.  It is well lit, warm and has a great support team of nurses, nursing students, exercise physiologists and a dietician.

The Thang:

COP

Tanner, one of the nursing students, leads the COP (although Tanner doesn’t even know that’s what it is called).  There are toe touches, calf stretches, a couple rounds of people’s chair (although, again, Tanner doesn’t even know that’s what it is called), air punches and shoulder rolls.  The mumble chatter is a mix of bragging on the number of stents we have, bypasses performed on us or complaining about how long it has been since we’ve had a steak or piece of pizza.  Another favorite topic is how many more sessions until we’re done.  I’ve completed 9 of 36 and we had two “graduates” today.

Mosey to exercise area for choice of elliptical, air bike, stationary bike or treadmill.  I’ve been doing the treadmill for 20 minutes at an 8:30 pace.  I think maybe the stents are helping the blood flow more freely than it had been.  I feel really really good after doing this.

Next is paddling time.  No it isn’t from a frat initiation out of Animal House.  But it’s still pretty cool.  One of the workers will take the paddles from a crash cart.  One is placed on your chest and one near your love handle.  Someone they get a pulse and a “quickie” ekg read out.  This is a crash cart as in “CLEAR” but they never push that button (at least not that I’ve seen so far thank goodness).

10 minutes of elliptical after that.  Level 10 and I output 175 watts.  I have no idea how that stacks up competitively, but I feel pretty winded after doing it. Plus there is a nice 5″ screen with a “scene” function.  I get to see the Golden Gate Bridge, some nature trails and probably the Rocky Mountains.

Tanner leads another COP for cool down.  After that, we mix it up a little. On Mondays we get some heart health education, Wednesdays we do some light weights and Fridays we go sit in a dark room and listen to new age music for 5 minutes.  I keep forgetting to bring incense but I don’t think it would be allowed anyway.

So much like the namesake of my F3 handle, I’m still suspended from “league play.”  I meet with the commissioner (cardiologist) on 3/23.  I’m hoping my appeal will lead to some limited activity outside of the cardiac rehab center.  Even if it doesn’t, the crew at cardiac rehab has been fantastic and I’ll be going through the entire program no matter what.

Today marks 30 days since my heart attack. All in all, it has been the best of a bad situation.  A long catheter through my wrist up to my heart and insert 3 stents, simple!  I know all the support I’ve received from my F3 brothers has helped me through it.  I’ve also been told by a couple of Pax that what happened to me really “freaked some of you out.”  Same here.  I’m still not sure what to think about all of it or what advice I have to offer (except if you suspect anything, get to the doctor or call 911; better safe than sorry).  However, if you have any questions or worries, I’m more than happy to talk about it.

I’m looking forward to van driving for the P200 next week and catching up with everyone. And I appreciate everyone at The Patriot looking out for Jeter as he continues to show up on Saturday’s (courtesy of his chauffer Chowdah).

Now the last time I wrote one of these things, I had a heart attack that night.  While there has been some confusion about what caused it, I’m hoping to rule out posting a back blast.

Boeheim

Aye!

18 PAX ventured out to Slowburn this fine morning. YHC had all week to plan and trash talk with the Swamp about how this AO was going to painful and that if you posted at the Swamp, you were chicken. Well from the mubble chatter, it appears this AO was were the pain was.

As Thursday night slowly creped towards midnight, YHC was still wrestling with sleep. He actually thought about fartsacking but knew he didn’t want to be called out like CSPAN was when he fartsacked for his Q, and knew F3 is all about #accountability (and getting ready for the Mud Run). So the clock kept ticking as YHC watched the time slowly go by. So he decided to get up after only about 3 hours of sleep to go set up the course. Yes, a course, perfect AO set up to get a little mud run training in (though not anything like the Reservation). I always wondered why people thought slowburn meant slow, but in reality it means you will suffer a slow burn throughout your body as you workout and move on with your daily activities.

16 PAX moseyed to the Empire Pizza parking lot while 2 others thought it would be an easier to go for a run (what were they thinking??)
COP:
SSH
Windmills
IW
Squats
Merkins

The Course:
mossy to the start at the corner of Empire Pizza. Perform 5 burpees, run to the hill behind the dumpster and run up/down the hill 3xs, run back to opposite corner of Empire Pizza and complete 10 squats. Run behind the strip mall and half way down, complete 10 merkins. Finish running to back corner of Baxter Jumphouse and bear crawl to the front corner. Run along the “road” towards the hotel under construction and along the guiderail, complete 10 dips. Continue running around the backside of Lowes, stop and complete 10 derkins utilizing the guiderail. Continue running towards the sheds and complete 10 squats and then run to Sweet frogs for 10 reverse pull-ups. Rinse and repeat 2xs.

Finished with 3 minutes of Mary. It was well planned that Dugger so happened to be located in the middle of the PAX so he VQ’d the 3 minutes of Mary! Great work. We ended up running the course 3xs for approximately 2.8 miles….and they say Slowburn isn’t for runners (Santini and DD should have stayed!).

Announcements: 20/40 get your snacks in! USMC Mud Run (6 teams so far); CAH this Saturday.

Prayers: multiple prayers for health and recovery, Stang & wife for this week’s tough memory of losing their son to cancer, and for all other unspoken prayer.

As always, an honor to Q and work beside PAX like you all!!!

Get the “LED” Out

  • QIC: Minute Man
  • When: 03/12/15

  • Posted In: The Fort

A couple of weeks ago, when the earth was frozen slush, I posted at my first Black Diamond. Zima was Q and served us quality pain. At COT, with Senator Tressel’s nudging, I reluctantly volunteered to Q to the next one. After delaying for a week due to being sick (thanks Maximus for covering), my day finally arrived today. Game time. The theme was “Get the Led Out.” The idea was inspired by Anchorman’s 80’s theme Q at the Ranch a while back.

After stating, “I am not a pro, go at your own pace, and I assume you read the disclaimer,” we started in prayer – Ball of Man.

“Your Time is Gonna Come”
The warm up. The calm before the storm.
10x Side Straddle Hop
10x Imperial Walker
10x Windmill

“Whole Lotta Love”
5 x Diamond Merkin HOLD IT
5x Merkin HOLD IT
5x Wide Arm Merkin HOLD IT
Right arm high, right leg if you got it (5 sec) HOLD IT
Left arm high, left leg if you got it (5 sec) HOLD IT
6 inches (5 sec) HOLD IT
Regular HOLD IT
10x Mountain Climber HOLD IT
10x Peter Parker HOLD IT
10x Parker Peter RECOVER

“House of the Holy”
In the corner of the parking lot was a stone trellis structure.
10x Wide Arm Derkins
10x Dips
Rinse and Repeat

“Ramble On” down the path to a grassy open field for the next exercise.

“How Many More Times”
Lunge left, Lunge right, 1 Squat, 70 LBCs
Lunge left, Lunge right, 2 Squats, 70 LBCs
Lunge left, Lunge right, 3 Squats, 70 LBCs
Lunge left, Lunge right, 4 Squats, 70 LBCs
Lunge left, Lunge right, 5 Squats, 70 LBCs

“Over the Hills and Far Away”
Jog down a series of hills through neighborhoods and into the woods by the golf course, arriving at the foot of a wooden bridge.

“That Confounded Bridge”
(A phrase from “The Crunge”)
Pair up – size matters.
Plank walk (hands sliding sideways) along bridge handrail with feet suspended on partner’s shoulders. Switch at half way mark or as needed until all the way across the bridge.

“Heartbreaker”
Worst hill in Tega Cay. The goal is simple: Jog to the top. Doing it without stopping is bonus.

3x 10 counts called for at top to catch our breath.

Jog a few minutes down a long hill to the lake front, where some logs were conveniently stacked and waiting for us.

“Four Sticks”
4 exercises with “sticks” (logs).
Carry the log and follow the Q down the hill, down a staircase, then back up the stairs and around the circular path to finish the loop.
10x Log Curls
10x Squat holding log, then Press log overhead
10x Calf raises holding log
Stack logs back where you found them.

Jog back up long hill to top of “Heartbreaker.”
3x 10 counts called for at the top
(yes, I seriously needed them!!!)

“The Crunge”
Crab + Lunge = Crunge
5 minute exercise going all the way down Heartbreaker to the bridge.
Crab walk during the steep declines and lunge walk thru the flatter stretches.

2x 10 counts called for at the bottom
(yeah, I was hurting)
A voice arose from the PAX “I thought 10 counts weren’t allowed at Black Diamonds.”
Oops. Rookie mistake. I was called out!

“Bring It on Home”
Jog back through a series of short but steep hills back to COT.

*At the beginning of this jog I nearly hurled! Serious exhaustion combined with the lingering mucus crud was not a savory combination. A took a short pit stop and wondered if I was about to puke during my VQ. Thank God I was able to keep it together and get back on track. TClaps to Aquaman and Pink Slip for not leaving their Q (who had become the stray 6). With their help I made it back to COT.

Back at COT the righteous PAX warriors were dutifully planking it out until we arrived. With a few minutes still on the we threw in a few final exercises:
10x Squats
10x LBCs
10x Hello Dolly
10x Rosalita

They’ve already brought their kids in to say goodbye to their grandparents.
Gecko- wife’s 22 yr old nephew found deceased after being missing. Family is devastated.
Jekyll- lots of PAX gone missing for the winter. Encourage them that it’s getting warmer and to come back out.

COT

Naked man moleskin

So the Laces In theme is supposed to be one that is friendly to “non-runners.”  As Green Wave testified during the Karaoke stretch home, all pax are runners at some level or another.  Starving the pax from a running segment or two proved the point.

Taking a fork in the road off Santini’s recent Q where he talked about F.E.A.R., we spent today focused on courage, in the form of “Don’t run.”  Leaders stand firm and don’t run from (insert: conflict, pain, suffering, emotions, bad behavior, people in need, etc).  I can’t count the number of times that I have “run” away from something that truly demanded my engagement.  It may have been in the form of slipping out of a room or failing to enter into a situation or avoiding a discussion topic or swallowing a comment/question/warning/word of advice for someone else or…the pax got the idea.  So today’s workout involved “relief” from running, but the challenge is to take that theme into daily life and commit to not running from where leadership is desperately needed.

Don’t forget about the 40 Day Challenge and bring your drinks and snacks to a workout for delivery to Children’s Attention Home.  If you missed out on the start of the 40 Day Challenge, it is not too late to get involved.  The 20 Day Challenge can start today!

As always, thanks to the site Q, Twister, for inviting me to lead, and thanks to the pax for laying it all out there today.

Coming off Gunny’s beatdown last week and the Murderer’s Row of Qs set for this Wednesday, I felt the pressure to bring something terrible to the sandbag faithful of Normandy.  After a shaky start…”what time do we start again?”…the pax headed off to warm up for the beatdown.

More Bag Drag Merkins x10

More Squat Complex X10 each position

The virtual shovel flag was planted and 21 men got off to a great start this morning with the 2nd official offering of The Ballroom.  This is how it went:

The Thang:

Mosey from the parking lot, down the short hill and head down the road toward the big warehouses.  Do a U-turn and go up/down,  ziggy/zaggy on the grassy hill, and then  follow the road to the lot behind Fort Mill Ford.

COP

SSH x 40, merkin x 10, Windmill x 20, LBC x 25, Squat x 26, MC x 25

Mosey back to the main road and up to the grassy patch.  Starting at the tree line, do the following:

Bear crawl down the grass, across the road, and up the grass hill – jog back (repeat once)

Side shuffle down the grass, acrooss the road… (repeat once)

Backwards bearcrawl, down the grass, across the road…(no repeat – these are hard!)

Jog down the grass, across the road…(repeat, only sprint the second time)

Everybody cross the road and find a spot on the grassy hill for clock merkins:

Assume the plank position move your body like the hand of a clock to various times and do merkins at those times.  We did, 12, 3, 6, 9, 6, and 3 – all in plank, no break.

Mosey to the warehouse parking lot for Jacob’s Wall Ladder.  Starting at 20 paces back, do one burpee, run to the first retaining wall, climb up, then climb over the second wall and run the path back to the start.  Repeat with 2-7 Burpees (crowd pleaser).

Walk back to the wall of the warehouse for extended people’s chair with arms out, up, etc  (I believe it was Anchorman who shouted, ‘hey, we’re still sitting!’ after the first 60 sec.  Aye – that’s right!)  Take a short walk break to stretch out the legs and repeat  .

Mosey to the grass patch in front of the Chicken Roaster for COP abs:

Freddie Mercs x 25 (fast and slow), Russian Twist x 25, Hello Dolly x 20, Superman/parachute x 2

Moleskin

It was a great morning in the gloom, althrough 55 deg is still a litle too warm for me this early in the year.   We had a great turnout today and you can already tell that the Ballroom will be a popular Tuesday morning spot at 5:15.  It’s always fun to Q, especially with a brand new  AO that still has a lot of virgin territory to explore and enjoy.  Great work by the Pax tackling the Jacob’s Wall Ladder.  My guess is that I’m not the only one who banged up his knees and put some wear on the toes of his shoes today   We’ll be using hose retaining walls again, I’m sure.

Welcome, FNG, Pete Faliskini (Calimari).  Glad to have you with us, brother and we hope to see you back.

….”bring clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually.”

The stage was set: As men we need to press ourselves so we can be a brighter light, for our family.  As men, we can accomplish more if we lean on each other and press one another. #BOM, huttled together for a F3 chant and off we went!

warm up run to the back of HT, circle up for:

one minute of Air Jump roap

the wind mill, single leg lunge, single leg lunge “bursts”, SSH 51 count, why? the cadence was weak, and YHC wanted it to be mental, the merkin x 30, buy now my dry mouth had set in as my adrenaline was pumping for what was next…(geko thought this was funny, as did I)

Mosey to #YoungLust….the 3 foot wall behind the OilExpress.  I hope we never see the way oil is changed the same again.  PRESSED!!!

Partner up. SET 1:  Partner 1 perform 20 wall dips, 20 decline merkins, 20 jump ups. Partner 2 runs around oil exPRESS, down the sidewalk to “the hill”, at the bottom, do 10 bomb jacks and reverse locomotion back to the top, run back to the oil exPRESS wall to partner and switch.

SET 2: Partner 1: 40/dips/decline merkins/jump ups.  Partner 2: run to rite aid parking lot, circle rite aid and back to oil exPRESS wall, do LBC until partner 1 is finished.

SET 3: Partner 1 50/dips/decline merkins/jump ups.  complete as many until partner 2 returns.  Partner 2: run around the HT parking lot and back to oil exPRESS wall.

multiple 10 counts, partner up again and do dips to fail: pebbles and one niner combined with at least 160….so we pressed on, decline merkins to fail.  Now funhouse is complaining that we have to be done by 0600!

Mosey to HT parking lot for ABLAB

Partner up:1) laying head to head with arms stretched out and inner locked with partners: 20 leg raises simultaneously, touching toes.

2) Spin around so feet are touching, get in V position with elbows touching ground and palms flat on the ground.  Partners rotate feet clockwise for 10, counter clockwise for 10.

3) Freddy Merc’s extending so you touch the other partners feet (#accountability, do it right with full extension)

REPEAT 3,2,1

COT: 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 PAUL says: “we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed.

Lets press each other to be the men we are called to be, let our oil burn bright.  Press on!
