Slippery When Wet…

Like any first time there can be butterflies, maybe a little queasiness.  There’s that first date, the first kiss, the first time I Q’d with CSPAN and Audit.  Come to think of it, kiss, CSPAN and Audit should never be mentioned in the same sentence, or paragraph for that matter.

Such was the case this fine morning when I was given the honor to have my very first full Q, let’s make it special, how about a #blackdiamond.  You only live once!

Started morning at 5:05 AM sharp, the standard disclaimer while Gears came sliding into his parking spot.  He felt it safer to ride in a metal box on ice than run the quarter mile to TCES.  YHC then dropped the #truthbomb that this was his first full Q and that things could go horribly bad.  They did!

Brief speech on mental toughness (thanks Jekyll) and how it led me to think about spiritual toughness, and the things we experience and how God is continually shaping us, building our spiritual toughness, to help us make the tough choices that keep us on the narrow path.  With that in mind, the 6 of us set off…did I mention their was about 2 inches of slurpee blanketing the campus?

The Thang:

1/4 mile run around TCES car pickup lane to COP (under the awning)

20 SSH
20 IW
20 Windmills
10 Merkins – Hold it
10 CDD

Run to the bottom of the stairs behind TCES for Stairway to 11. Start with 5 burpees, run the flight of stairs to the middle landing, do 5 merkins, run to the top and do 5 squats, run back to the base and start over with 6, continuing in this regard until you hit 11. Not a lot of mumble chatter here. Gotta say wrist deep in slush is not my favorite.

After a couple of breathy 10 counts, we proceeded to the back lot of TCES for some AROD 3-2-1’s or Reverse Doras. Partnering up, partner 1 runs/slides the back of the school to the fire hydrant while parter 2 begins 300 squats, then exchange. After squats came 200 Bomb jacks but in the interest of time (and a little surprise), YHC dropped it to 100. Last run was 100 merkins. After completion I was really feeling like this was a good first time, even if I was all cold and wet!

10 count from Gecko and we headed to our final destination, the Amphitheater. Along the way some irresponsible person left a bunch of cinder blocks in our path (surprise). So we picked them up and hit the Amphitheater. 4 stations, 4 exercises

Station 1 – 20 Presses (climb to the next landing)
Station 2 – 20 Curls (climb to the next landing)
Station 3 – 20 Uneven Merkins (10 each side, climb to the next landing)
Station 4 – 20 Headbangers Squats/Goblets (Thanks for the audible Sen Tressel)

Rinse and Repeat

Run back up the hill and drop the blocks where we found them. Thanks to Maximus for collection afterwards. Then another 1/4 mile run around the pickup lane to finish where we started. Never got to the AbLab but I’m thinking not too many wanted to spend any time on their backs. Finished up with COT

Announcements: CAH and the 40 Day Challenge (drinks and ind wrapped snacks to AOs), CAH Workout (check Pre-blast) this Saturday, Mudrun, P200 meeting rescheduled for next Wed after RNG (Towne Tavern), CNW2 at The Swamp next Friday

Prayers: Pray for those who have no shelter in this weather, Thankful for forgiving families

Really enjoyed Qing at TCES and this place has so many options. Honored to be a part of F3 and especially the Fort! Aye!

  • No quit in Anchorman.  that dude is tough
  • Cash makes a cameo- beginning of many- great to see you out.  Talked about power of the EH and power of words.  Aye brother!  Go text or call someone TODAY who you haven’t seen in a while.  Bonus: Cash was lead dog most of the morning.
  • Trucker didn’t let fact that his “friends” failure to pick him up for #clowncar stop his momentum.  Solid work
  • Solid State and McGruff proved again to be the heart and the soul of the workout with great words and enviable work ethic
  • Change order’s fitness and comedic sensibilities are duking out to see which bubbles to the top.  so far fitness is winning…

Great words by each PAX member.  Solid State with a great take out.

Ramped Up for some HIT

  • QIC: The Beast
  • When: 02/26/15
  • Pax: Sharknado, One Niner
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

Despite the fear of a #snowpocalypse, which never came to SC, three brave warriors gathered with sandbags in tow at the #audible AO #TheCave (aka URS parking ramp). Pax helped with a little setup placing sandbags at the halfway point and top of the up ramp.

The Thang

Warm up (~10 mins)

2 corners – run the parking deck loop, stop in one corner stop in second corner. At each corner warm up with:

  • 20 X SSH
  • 20 X Windmill
  • 10 X Monkey Humpers
  • 20 X Mountain Climbers

Ramp It Up (20 mins)

The goal here was to engage the Pax in some high intensity interval training (HIT). This was accomplished by:

  • Sprint up the ramp to halfway point up – sandbag clean and press
  • Sprint up the ramp to the tp – sandbag bent over row
  • Recovery jog down the ramp
  • Audible plank-o-rama, 10 counts, or ab-o-rama to bring the heart rate down (10 – 40 seconds depending on interval)
  • Rinse an repeat

The ramp was run 9 times in  jacobs ladder fashion 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 on the number of reps for the exercises for each run up the ramp. First run up, 1 rep, second run up 2 reps, etc.

Negatives (10 mins)

These aren’t your 35mm film or an attitude, this is pure muscle breakdown so you can gain some mass. Read more about The Benefits of Negative Weight Training @ BuildSize.com. Basically this is the “portion of the exercise where you lower the weight back down (and) is called the eccentric movement of the exercise.” Controlled, muscle stimulation, growth.

  • 10 X Negative Pull Ups
  • 10 x Negative Hanging Rows (using the structural angle iron)

Topping it Off (5 mins)

The Pax pushed it across the finish line with a little People’s Choice Ab-o-Rama

  • Low Slow  Flutter – The Beast
  • Chair Dips – One Niner
  • Freddie Mercury – Sharknado

Awesome to have Chicken Wing visit and catch up. Proud of you brother and always a home for you in The Fort!!

Rebel and YHC talked prior to wheels up about how those with less seem to go over and heyond their expectations, where as those of us with full ablitites, take advantage of our health and ablities. Point is to take care of yourself but strive to reach and do more then expected. Dream Big and go get it!

Spoke on 1 Timothy 4:8 in how we are to train our bodies but it is only for our time on this earth, but training in godliness is for eternity. After a tough workout, it brings conviction to compare what we work at physically, straining toward our next goal. God tells us to strain and push ourselves in our spiritual training all the more through prayer, reading His Word, meditating on His Word and exercising our faith. May we train as hard on our “spiritual bodies” as we do on our physical bodies out of a love for our Great God!!

Thanks to pax for a strong showing, Cake Boss for the Q invite (deferred one week by Mr Freeze) and Change Order for hosting the pax this morning and future Tuesday mornings.  Certainly put a dent in the register receipts at Golden Corral today!

T-claps to Sir Topham Hat for nailing his VQ!  Site Qs need to get him on the calendar.

The naming of the AO brought about much discussion.  Themes from Warehouse to fast food to fitness to precious metals.  And then the muse made her presence felt….the ballroom dancing spot instantly became visible in the eye of every pax.  So, what will it be Change Order?

After plenty of running at Old Town yesterday, I swore to myself that there would be no running today. I pledged to my aching quads and tight hamstrings that they would get a break.  Yet, upon exiting my car, the sweet call of the sirens began to fill my ears….in the form of McGruff and Trucker, they baited me.  Like a long-legged vixen from a Van Halen video, images from my adolescence in the 1980s began to swirl in my head.  I brushed it off, saying that STH was leading…he was in charge of the festivities today.  But, I could feel my pulse picking up pace.  I took a few deep breaths….I told myself that STH already had an Indian Run on tap.  That would be enough.  That would scratch the itch without going over the edge.  That seemed to do the trick…it was like a cold shower without the shivers.  As we launched, COP provided the perfect warm up.  The Indian Run got the blood flowing without taxing the lungs or spreading the pax out too far.  Thankfully it did not trigger me.  When STH passed me the reins, I was confident – I CAN DO THIS!  We went through all the moves along the warehouse.  There were groans and grumbles, proving that it was possible.  The knee tar jai reinforced my resolve — yes I can deliver pain to the pax without pounding the pavement!  We were in close quarters, the mumble chatter was escalating, the pax was working hard and pushing each other.  Even the bomb jacks were taken in good spirits.  But then…a whisper…did I really hear that?  Was it actually spoken or was it just the temptresses seeping back into my consciousness?  The questions swirled in my head as we dropped to the ground for hello dollies…but NO!…those could be dangerous.  So I called an audible to flutter kicks….those should be harmless.  And yet, the voices in my head grew louder.  The images spun faster.  Counting cadence was not a sufficient distraction.  My heart rate accelerated.  The internal argument in the court room of my brain became deafening!    I held on as tightly as I could, white knuckling it mentally.  “I can’t give in!” I was screaming with my mouth clenched tight.  And then…it happened…I succumbed.  The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.  Yes, “I Ran!…I ran so far away…but I couldn’t get away.”

This ain’t no snow day

  • QIC: C-SPAN & Chaser
  • When: 02/24/15
  • Pax: Menthol, Birdcage, Repeat, Solid State, MacGyver, Old Bay, Twister, Airborne, Full Count, Wheelz, Java, and Audit
  • Posted In: Block Party

14 pax today brushed off the weather reports and posted for a tag-team tour of WEP.  Snow and sleet started to fall just as we were getting out of the car.  C-SPAN started off the festivities a few minutes early to make sure everyone got their money’s worth.

Warm-up – SSH, IW, Windmills, Squats, Plank set (left arm high, right arm high, drop hips, etc.) mixed with some Peter Parkers, Parker Peters, and some well-paced Mountain Climbers.

Mosey to the 2nd drill bit

The Thang Part 1: Drill Bit Routine

Run to each drill bit (5) and repeat the following:

  1. 7 SSH
  2. 7 Seal-jacks
  3. 7 Squats
  4. 7 Lunges
  5. 7 Monkey Humpers

Short ab-lab at the last drill bit until the 6 arrived.  The off to the trees along road.  Bear crawl or crab walk (Pax choice) to the first tree and then lunge to the sign.  Upon reaching the sign, C-Span spoke some words of wisdom about “sitting in the front row” and taking charge and getting out of your comfort zone. #HIM

Next, YHC took the reins and we moseyed off to the downtown parking lot for…

The Thang Part 2:

1) “A Clockwork Merkin” (start in push up position at 12 o’clock, 3 merkins and then “walk” yourself around to 3 o’clock, 3 merkins, on to 6 o’clock, 3 merkins, on to 9 o’clock, 3 merkins and then back to 12.) – 3 “hours” worth and then hold in elbow plank position.

2) Attack the grassy knoll to the upper parking lot.

3) “Jack Webb Burped” – line up across the parking lot and work the parking lines. 1 burpee/2 airpress, 2 burpees/4 airpress, 4/8, 8/16, 4/8, 2/4, 1/2. – LBCs until the 6 comes home.

4) Bear crawl/squat line work – 1 squat, bear crawl to second line, 2 squats, bear crawl to 4th line, 4 squats, repeat up to 8 and then work back down as before.

5) “Hot Hand Merkins” x 10 (push-up, touch right should with right hand, push up, touch left shoulder with left hand = 1)

6) Mosey to other parking lot and grab some curbs.  20 dips and then 5 more Hot Hand Merkins.

Mosey to COT….prematurely as it was brought to my attention by Twister.  Keeping in mind that I didn’t want these Pax to be cheated out of their hard-earned price of admission, we worked the abs a bit….30 Freddy Mercury, 30 LBCs, 15 CBLs (crowd pleaser).

Always wonderful and an honor to lead this group of men and a special chance to team up with C-SPAN to bring some pain.  Great work by all the PAX as the snow fell harder towards the end of the workout.

The PAX inspired the Q on this day, and everyday I post. Everyone seemed to really get after it and push each other. For YHC, it was probably the most fun I’ve had as a Q.Thank you to the PAX for that. I knew everyone was enjoying it when I heard mumblechatter about the Bombjacks on the hill being a bad idea.

Zima shared his praise of a great trip to Colombia. t-Claps to him for his service.

I know this backblast is 2 weeks late. Ironic because no backblast or late backblasts is a pet peeve of mine. The least we can do as Q’s is give the men that posted the acknowledgement. And provide some background for those that are thinking about posting or who fartsacked and wish they had posted. I am raising my hand and saying it “I’m guilty of the late backblast. I will do better!”

Next post for this AO is @ Hardee’s!!! 0515 We need to name this AO!

See yo uin the Gloom!
