When “Kenyan” is the VQ, get ready to run!

  • QIC: Kenyan (VQ) & DaVinci (VQ Mulligan)
  • When: 08/13/16
  • Pax: WitchHunt, Wild Thing, Mister Rogers, Royale, Longshanks, Tater
  • Posted In: The Deep

Last Saturday, I had the great privilege to lead alongside Kenyan on his VQ at the Deep. As his F3 name suggests, Kenyan is a runner. But he hasn’t always been one (More on that in a bit).

The Kenyan warm-up and beat down:
Side-Straddle Hops
Windmill
Hillbilly Walkers
American Hammers
Freddy Mercurys
Pivot Plank Merkins
Toe Squats

Then we moseyed across the street to the brand-spanking new school’s track for the running portion of the program.

Before we began, Kenyan gave some great personal testimony.

Kenyan wasn’t born a runner. In fact, he hated running. But his pastor introduced a “Couch to 5K” program. By his own account, he wasn’t in the greatest shape, didn’t eat the healthiest stuff. So he decided to give it a go. In a matter of weeks, he’d lost significant amount of weight and was hooked. Then, his pastor called him and let him know about an upcoming marathon, and that Kenyan was “voluntold” he was going to run it. Pastor sent a training program and, to make a long story short, Kenyan ran that marathon, and is currently training for NUMBER 6. (Author’s note: This is a full six more marathons than I have run.) He used his personal journey to illustrate the power of our mind and positive thinking. If you think you can do something, chances are, you can. If you doubt you can, you’ve already failed. Aye!

The Merkin Mile Challenge
Cones at 11 and 5 o’clock on the oval track marked the merkin stations
Ten merkins at the first set, run, 10 merkins at the second set, run
Repeat for 10 full minutes. Intense. But, you know what? We all pushed ourselves and finished strong.

Then Kenyan handed off the second half to me.

I took my inspiration from a CSPAN Q at The Swamp. Thanks, CSPAN!

Set up included a dozen parking spaces (two rows of six, back to back), each with an exercise and the number of reps in sidewalk chalk. Each PAX chooses a parking spot, completes the prescribed exercise, then runs a lap around the parking lot, returning and progressing to the next exercise in the sequence. Go until C.O.T.

The Thang:

Merkins x 20
Sumo Squats x 20
Mountain Climbers x 20
Diamond Merkins x 20
LBCs x 20
Flying Squirrels x 10
Merkins x 20
Imperial Walkers x 20
Peter Parkers x 20
Freddy Mercurys x 20
Carolina Dry Docks x 20
Flying Squirrels x 10

At C.O.T., I spoke a bit about this month’s theme of forgiveness. My biggest challenge is not the forgiving of others. It’s being forgiving of myself. I challenged us all to offer ourselves the same grace we give others. We all fall short. We all make mistakes. But, the hope is we learn from them and become better men.

Prayers: for teachers and students as they return to school, for Royale’s Dad, for helping us grow as fathers, husbands and friends.

Perfect High Humidity Morning and 77 degrees

Disclaimer – Legal Counsel not present (scared?)

Really dark out there…

And we were off at a good mosey pace, carrying your kettlebell, around back of the school

Warm Up, consisted of lots and running and stopping at each light pole, and 10 repetitions in cadence of all my favorites. Yes, we got in about 2 miles, yes, it felt great lots of sweat, lots of #chatter, and Package occasionally participated, and Skate or Die pushed the pace.

Back to bells, we would complete 25 KB exercises, and then we would run the bus loop, we got in another 1.4 miles and 150 exercises, got a really great sweat on #Spicy #Humid #SMELLY

Poor Q planning and I ran us out of time.

COT/Prayer or Praise/BOM

Sermon Notes:

Told the story of The @MAFSS7GoRuck Event from over the weekend and discussed the crew, read more here:

Memorial planned for victims of MAFFS air tanker crash

We also talked a quick lesson on the vertical relationship with God and the importance of having quality relationships on your horizontal (this world) relationships, in my worldview you can’t have one without the other.

In F3 it is described this way:
CONCENTRICA: The circular rings formed by a man’s relationships on the Big Ball. Please look it up on the lexicon for a much more articulate definition.

1. First Ring: M (wife)

2. Second Ring: Shorties (children)

3. Third Ring: Shield Lock (brothers in arms)

4. Fourth Ring: Blades (younger men)

5. Fifth Ring: Mammon (work)

Be a better man today than you were yesterday, and I appreciate the invite Birdcage, and it is always an honor to Q a pack of #HIM,
AYE!

Imagine that, there was pain at PHOP

  • QIC: Dawg Pound
  • When: 8/10/16
  • Pax: Schrute, Samurai, Kindergarten Cop, Torque Wrench, Mr. Big Stuff, Gable(FNG), Bill Nye, The Riddler, Fall Out, Mailman, Burgundy, Kelvin, Tinker Toy, Sgt York, Hot Sauce, Honey Pot
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

First of thanks to The RIddler for setting up the AO the night before as I was unable to make it there.  And also thanks to The RIddler for bringing an FNG.  Welcome Gable!

10 stayed for the gear heavy workout, while 7 “cowards” took off running at the site of the tires and blocks.  Either that, or they were training for BRR and P200.

Let’s get down to business. Please bear in mind I sweated through my notes and had to do this by memory for the most part.

Warm Up

Side straddle hop

Merkins

Hillbilly walkers

Side straddle hop

The Main Event

I wasn’t sure what to expect numbers wise but having 10 PAX for the gear portion allowed us all to stay together as one and didn’t require different stations.

The PAX partnered up and we got to work.

Partner 1 flipped the tire 12 times as the timing mechanism.

Partner 2 did front raises with the PVC pipes.

We rinsed and repeated until the time passed.

The next move was to the cinder blocks.  Every HIM was given a cinder block and instructed to carry it from one end of the grassy yard to the other.  At the turn we engaged in ab work.  Initially we alternated between flutter kicks and LBCs.  But after several turns it was decided to do trunk twists in which two men stood back to back passing the cinder block.

We rinsed and repeated until it was decided that our shoulders had been sufficiently tortured.

At this point we did some stuff which has apparently been lost to history.

We finished up the remaining time with a little dealer’s choice before putting away all the gear.

FInished with COT and welcomed FNG Gable.

A little ‘game’ of Blackjack @ ‘The Hive’

  • QIC: Hot Sauce
  • When: 08/12/16
  • Pax: Clark Kent, Tess, Long Shanks, CSPAN, Bass-O-Matic, Jerry McGuire, Howlitser, Dog Pound, Air Born, Kielbasa, Bird Cage
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

12 PAX had ~ not only the intention ~ but the direction to roll out of the ‘fart sack’ this lovely AM and arrive at “The Hive” for a little Kettle Bell ‘sting’ this morning.

The Warm-Up:

25 SSH

25 Moroccan Night Clubs (w/ a small, focused ‘twist’)

25 Pterodactyl Circles

25 Imperial Walkers

25 Hill Billy Walkers

25 Peter Parkers

25 Parker Peters

The Thang:

A little game of Black Jack ~ the ‘cards’ consisted of Gobble Squats on the front end….. with Upright rows on the back end…… and a roughly 30 yd mosey in between……

Next on the agenda:

21 Kettle Bell Swings (trying to hold onto the recently made memories of ‘Black Jack’)

21 Figure Eights

11 Plank Rows on the Rt

11 Plank Rows on the Lt

21 American Hammers

‘Sally’ helped up finish out The ‘Thang’ with a little planking for the first verse, 6-inches for the second verse, back to planks for the third verse, and squats for the final verse.

COT: Announcements were made with CSPAN covering it ALL with “read your newsletter” –

We then discussed “Principle of the Path” that states:

Our direction ~ not our intentions ~ determines our destinations

This was then tied into the theme of the month: forgiveness

We should all have the ‘intention’ to live at harmony with those we come in contact with on a daily bases….. be it our ‘M’s , our 2.0’s, our work colleagues, the PAX we work out with…… but what’s our ‘direction’……. how do we resolve conflicts that WILL come about? With gas?….. or…. With water?

Have the direction to use water will help us avoid needing to deal with most of the difficulties associated with forgiveness to being with!!!

Thanks for opening this and reading!

On the journey together,

Hot Sauce ~

Pyramid of Pain

  • QIC: Mission Impossible
  • When: 8/11/16
  • Pax: Dark Helmet, Fridge, Crosscheck, Duke Nuke'm, Geronimo, Sasquatch, WitchHunt, Ginsu, Deacon, What Did, Nomad, Peabody, Trucker, Huckleberry, DropThrill, Spiderman, Pappy, Mission Impossible
  • Posted In: The Ranch

When Spiderman asked me to take over as Site Q, I knew I needed to set the tone for the Ranch.

17 Men arrived unaware of the mission at hand. Knowing how impossible our task was, we got right to business.

Warm Up: A short mosey to get the blood flowing, 20 SSH, 10 Wind Mills, 20 mountain climbers were all we needed to start climbing the pyramid.

After each exercise, PAX ran the 1/4 mile school drop-off loop. Here’s how it went down:

10 Jack Webbs

20 Burpees

30 Diamond Merkins

40 American Hammers

50 Carolina Dry Docks

60 Crab Cakes

70 Merkins

80 Step Ups

90 Dips

100 Squats

While the exercises could have kept going up, the PAX was gassed. Together we made a jogging like motion back to COT where we completed one of the sweatiest and stinky rounds of name o rama, announcements, and prayer requests. PAX were left with the reminder of what we do in the dark, gets exposed in the light. Mind, body, and soul. #HIM

The Arsenal – Get into the Game!!

  • QIC: Cake Boss
  • When: 08/10/2016
  • Pax: Fall Out, Posse, Kielbasas, Shopdog, Jingles, Borne, Clark Kent, Bounty Hunter, Ringer, General, Bird Cage, Dasher, Popeye, Bubble Boy, Transporter, Beast
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

16 PAX and YHC arrived at The Arsenal it seemed the clown cars would not stop coming in the lot. We took off for our mosey and guys were still jumping out of cars.

The Thang:

Mosey down to football field avoiding obstacles along the way like holes in the ground, curbs, high tension wires…etc….etc….

COP:

  • SShs
  • Squats
  • LBCs
  • Merkins
  • Freddy Mercury
  • Sumo Squats

YHC brought the PAX together on the football field to discuss the game of life. All of us would rather be in the game versus on the sidelines or in the dugout. We all want to play versus watch the game, but in the Game of Life we seem to sit on the sideline and watch Life go by. What is going on in our life that we need to “Be in the game” on. Marriage, Kids, work, Faith!! Think about it!!

Moesy to playground without getting hurt

Partner up

5 exercises, 10 reps for each man, 5 rounds (50 reps each)

  • Pullups
  • Dips
  • Merkins
  • Squats
  • LBCs
    • Partner 1 – does reps
    • Partner 2 – runs quasi suicide
    • Swap until each get 50 reps
    • Move on to next exercise

YHC talked to the men about using the tools we have around us to play in the Game of Life. In football we put our helmet on when the coach calls us, or we grab our glove to play the hot corner in baseball. In life we have brothers around us in COT or Whetstone and we have our Faith, Bible and Sky Q that will guide us. Don’t go it alone. Use the tools at hand to play the Game!!

Mosey to school wall for couple rounds of people’s chair and shoulder presses.

COT:

Announcements for 9/13 convergence at Ballroom….see newsletter

Prayers for all those hurt, serving our country, facing health and sickness, and lost from Sky Q.

Thank you to brothers from Union County for coming out! Look forward to posting down your way.

Peace!

What a group of High Impact Men. I love Q’ing in RH/FM. I started in FM at WEP before any RH AO’s existed. As a RH resident, I made a decision to stick close to home to help grow the area (region?). Now, I would put RH up against any of the several regions I’ve visited. WEP holds a special place though, so I’ll have to go back soon. FM brothers Santini, Pusher, Double D, CSPAN, Jekyll, Senator Tressel, Cable Guy and others helped me on my F3 progress. Oh yeah, and Twister taught me how to mumble chatter. Twister and Apache must be blood cousins.

I dropped the ball on scheduling as site Q, so I took it today and made it up on the fly. Great HIM to come on Q at ManU.

Pre-Run/Post-Run: I love having 3 brothers in Seven Oaks. We did a mile warm up from the neighborhood. Burgundy, Roxanne, and Italian Job help keep me accountable. (and ask me about NO!)

The theme this morning was form, timing, working the AO, and keeping up with the 6. And YHC worked hard to control the mumble chatter and Q jacking.

The Thang
I won’t get it all, but we did a lot of “stuff”

-SSH, right over left, left over right, Peter Parker, Windmill, slow Merkins, etc
-Mosey (1/4 mile)
-Parking lot Bear Crawls with hand release Merkins every two spots
-More mosey (1/4 mile)
-Peoples Chair (thank you CSPAN), Irkins, Peoples Chair, menage e trois Calf Raises, Peoples Chair, Derkins
-Even More Mosey
-Jacobs ladder on the small hill (Merkins and Squats)
-Still More Mosey
-Drunken Sailors (inverted row)
-little mosey
-Fountain step ups, box jumps, and low slow squats,
-Mosey (boring, I know)
-SSH
-Mosey (really?)
-Seal Jacks
-Walk to COT (finally)

BOM: Such an inspiration to lead these men. 20 somethings to 50 somethings. Words that come to mind: Great, Endurance, No Slackers, We are the 6. Prayers for health, family, the brothers on IR.

EH: If you want on the schedule at ManU then DM me on the twitter box @iheadley There is lots of parking lot, ledges, wall, hills, and mosey to be had.

  • When: 08/11/16
  • Pax: High Pockets, Drifter, Cutter, Chef, Stranger, Redwood, Blacklung, BMX, Nunchuck

Due to the fact that some of our 2.0s are going back to school, Cedar volunteered to help Drydock with the workout today since it would be one of his last opportunities for a while. Drydock also wanted to use the workout as a means of helping some of the newer PAX learn cadence calling in the warm up.

WARM UP:

Variations of several common exercises:

WORKOUT:

35’s by Drydock… 35 Merkins then run 100 yards then 35 squats…run back…then down by 5 reps each time until PAX gets to 5.

THEN, mosey to another area:

35’s by Cedar…35 LBCs…run up steep grass hill…35 Carolina Drydocks….and so on until PAX reaches 5.

Mosey back to COT….Praises and Prayers.

GREAT Q CEDAR…He is an inspiration to all 5th graders that want to learn from their Father and other PAX!!!  VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!
