Honing our Hockey Skills

WARMUP: Quick run around the parking lot, to where Golden Corral meets, circle up for the following:
– 20 SSH
– 10 Windmills
– 15 Imperial walkers
– 10 Moroccan night clubs
– 10 Strawberry pickers
Then run to the parking lot at Grace Presbyterian Church for the main event!

THE THANG:
As mentioned in 38 Special’s AAR writeup from Minnow Pond the day before, done in the theme of Happy Gilmore, I do indeed suck at hockey. BUT – what I lacked in skill I made up for in intensity. So in light of Happy Gilmore as well as the ongoing NHL Playoffs for the Stanley Cup, I put together something fun yet challenging to improve our hockey #3S2T.

An NHL hockey rink is 200ft long x 85ft wide. The large parking lot in front of the church is a little larger – approx 240′ x 100′. Go big and train to compete, right? There were 8 cones set up around our rink, each with exercises and a mode of transportation to the next cone. Start at cone 1, do the exercise, move to the next. Happy Gilmore may not have been the best skater or shooter, but damn he was intense. No rest in between as Happy would want it

Cones:
1. ICING CALL on the opponent! Puck dropped but they won it. SKATE to go on defense! >> Eric Heiden’s to #2. (aka lateral lunge runs).
2. On defense in the corner. Happy falls on the ice and can’t get up! >> 30 dying cockroaches (DC) and 20 hammers (DC) >> Bear crawl to #3 (approx 25 yds)
3. GET UP OFF THE ICE HAPPY!! In front of the net, blocking shots. >> 10 burpees. >> Strides to #4 (think of a run while skipping, knees up high).
4. Happy was a pugilist. In the opposite defensive corner of the rink. Work on your enforcer abilities! >> 20 planks w alternating punches (DC), 20 Cobra Kai’s (DC) (while holding a deep squat, alternate punching) >> GO ON OFFENSE!! >> Strides to #5 (opposite end corner of the parking lot)
5. We are wide open!! Pass me the puck!! Signal your teammates >> 40 SSH (DC) >> You got the puck, move to the net! >> Strides to # 6 (center rink, offensive side)
6. TAKE THE SHOT!! Practice your SLAPSHOT!! >> 30 Apolo Ohno’s w arm swings. >> Bear crawl to #7 (opposite corner, offensive side, approx 30 yds)
7. YOU SCORED!! Now taunt the LOSERS!! >> 30 monkey humpers, 20 dirty dogs (10 each leg). >> Mary Katherine Lunge to #8 (a lunge walk, while you are lunging, you are extending both arms overhead, like a touchdown signal).
8. CELEBRATE!! Raise Lord Stanley’s Cup!!! At center rink. With a cinderblock, 20 curls then 20 overhead presses. Did you know: The Stanley Cup weighs 35 lbs, and a cindy weighs 38 lbs.
Back to #1, and repeat.

Everyone got in 2 full rounds. Mumblechatter was epic! A lot of 90s pop culture references, specifically Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and how they both tied in together on several movies. We even incorporated the Globo Gym Purple Cobras team entrance moves between 6 and 7 on round 2. Google it if you want to know what that was. We were tired but still had a blast.

Then…..we channeled a little bit of Metro’s Shore Card and carried all the coupons back to COT. There were 6 of us, but there were 8 cindies, a 30 lbs plate, and a 40 lbs sandbag. It all got back.

Run to the football field and do the same thing but
when you get to each 10 yard line do 10 bomb jacks
and when you come back do 10 squats

Winging it at the Corral

WARMUP: Quick mozy then mountain climbers, Moroccan Night Clubs, CDD and for the crowd pleaser….SSH
THE THANG: Due to technology issues, the scheduled Q wasn’t there so we winged it and the backblast is unlikely to be fully accurate. I probably should have completed this backblast right after the workout but, oh well.
After warmup we jogged to the side of the Harris Teeter for wall sits. The Pax took turns bear crawling out and doing five merkins while the others stayed “seated”. Burpees then followed the merkins.
Mozy to just in front of the Dollar Store for 11s. We took requests and Senator suggested Diamond merkins and Kermit chose bomb jacks. Laps went from the Dollar Store to the Indian restaurant at the other side of the parking lot.
Once completed, we returned to the side of HT for BTW countdowns, overhead claps and likely other stuff I don’t immediately remember.
With time remaining, we did mini 7s running from the side of HT to the other side of the street. (Again, I’m not recalling what exercises we did but we took requests for inclusivity)
With a few minutes remaining we returned to COT for boxcuttahs, hello Dollys and flutters.
Despite no actual plan, it turned out to be a good beatdown and everyone got something out of it.

Mosey around the HT parking lot and circle up in front of the barbershop
THE THANG:
COP (mostly double counts):
SSHx 25, Low slow squat x 20, windmill x 10, wide arm merkin x 10/hold/MC x 15, hello Dolly x 20, Pretzel crunch x 20, Alt Lunge x 10/Jumping lunge x 10, diamond merkin x 10, Morrocan Night Club x 35 while walking to side island.

Line up along the side island and bear crawl to the opposite island, do 5 burpees at the end.
Rinse and repeat with crabwalking, lunge walk, and inchworms (4 trips total, 20 burpees total)

Walk to another island, line up and face the Harris Teeter.
Suicides to 1st, 2nd, and last island in front of store, x 2

Walk back to original spot for the <@UJGS2BBQD> killer hip/leg routine.

Repeat one more suicide run.

Mosey back to the shovel flag and circle up for Mary.

THE THANG: Start with 7’s in the church parking lot running from one end of the parking lot to the other – burpees and big boys. Mosey back to the HT parking lot and use 2 islands to do the following between the islands – high knees, kaorake 2, nur, bear crawl, lunges, toy soilders. Mosey to area with rocks in parking lot – squat thrusters – 15, 10, 10. Curls – 20, 15, 10, 10. Chest presses with flutters – 15, 10, 10… Finish with Dora in the HT parking lot – 100 squats, 150 MC (DC), 200 LBCs

Ass Kicking April – Yard

WARMUP: Mosey to warmup – SSH, windmill, imperial walker, cherry picker, hillbilly walker, Moroccan nightclub, merkins, calf raises.
THE THANG: Mosey to parking lot with track to complete 7 of diamonds – 4 laps around the track with 4 sets of an exercise. 7 merkins at each (4) station, 14 squats, 21 flutter kicks, 28 LBCs… utilizing the same parking lot, complete exercise from one end to the other – toy soldiers, lunges, bear crawl, karaoke 2… Dora after that – 100 squats, 150 M.C (D.C), and 200 LBCs. End with dips and then a job around the lap.

10-20-30 Back to Back Days

WARMUP: Mosey and then SSH, cherry pickers, windmill, imperial walkers, hillbilly walkers, plank, merkins, walk the dog, honeymooners, etc.
THE THANG: Utilizing 3 islands in the parking lot behind Panera, we did 10-20-30s. Exercises included – mountain climbers, squats, lunges, LBCs, flutters, CDD with running between each station. Example 10 squats, run, 20 squats, run, 30 squats. Sprints, karaoke, and nur all mixed with between stations. Mosey to the multi story retail area and dora – mountain climbers, squats, LBCs. Mosey to Amphitheatre – dips, step up, merkins 2 sets. End with Mary and stretching.
