QSOURCE 2022.07 – DRP(Q1.01)

Q1.01 DRP
DRP: The daily commitment to accelerate your Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith
For anyone who has been living under a rock for the past 20 years the daily red pill is a reference to the choice that Neo is faced with in the movie The Matrix. The main character is faced with a choice to accept the truth that is hard to face, (by taking the red pill), or to ignore the truth and pretend the newfound knowledge he has recently acquired doesn’t exist, (by taking the blue pill). He is told that by taking the blue pill he is making an informed decision that he wants to continue living in a synthetic world where he can go through the motions and live his life and eventually die without making any significant impact on the world but knowing that the whole thing is just one giant lie of deception. Or he can take the red pill which will force him into a life of suffering and hardship which is guaranteed to suck yet he will have the freedom to make his own choices instead of being a pawn in someone else’s game.
How is this scenario relevant to what we are trying to learn from the F3 leadership manual? It is a challenge for us as men to make a conscious decision to have a say in how we live our lives. Most men reading this are in the 1% club, compared to billions of people around the big ball who struggle daily to survive, and if not careful can go through our entire lives without having experienced the full spectrum of what life has to offer. When I say the 1% club I am meaning that you probably woke up in some sort of a dwelling that has running water, electricity, food in the pantry, and freedom from persecution for personal beliefs. To put it bluntly, we are at serious risk of living a soft life never even realizing our true potential. This is the ultimate waste of resources in my personal opinion. Great so what do we do about it? Enter the idea of the (DRP) or Daily Red Pill.
The QSource defines the DRP as the daily Commitment to Accelerate your Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. Let’s wait to unpack the definition in order to first call attention to the capitalized words in the statement. When regular words are capitalized within the QSource text it is because those words take on a specific definition as it pertains to the F3 world. See Foundation QF2, Language, for reasons why Dredd redefines common words.
Commitment is defined as, (IDA): the Unwavering loyalty to the Group and unflinching determination to accomplish its Mission. (Q3.9).
Accelerate is defined as, (IDA): To increase the pace of Movement.
Fitness is defined as, (IDA): A man’s Right relationship with himself.
Fellowship is defined as,(IDA): A man’s Right relationship with those in Proximity.
Faith is defined as,(IDA): A man’s Right relationship with his Creator.
So let’s do some algebra and plug all of the definitions into the original statement and see what we get.

DRP: The daily (unwavering loyalty to the Group and unflinching determination to accomplish its mission) to (increase the pace of Movement) for your (right relationship with himself) your (Right relationship with those in Proximity) and your (Right relationship with his Creator).

Whew, that was a mouthful. So what does it all mean? Explain it like I am five please snowman.

It means that to take the DRP a man must set his daily purpose to improving himself, his relationship with those in which he interacts, and his relationship with his Creator.

Sounds simple but unfortunately, it doesn’t make it easy.
Great now we are getting some traction. We know what the DRP is now let’s talk about why it’s important to you. Let me be the first to possibly hurt your feelings and say that you are soft, easy to kill, and will give up at the first sign that things become difficult or dangerous. But there is hope for you I promise. If you don’t take offense to the previous statement then you might need to do some soul searching or you have already learned the magic of the DRP and understand that my insult is my attempt to be the Disruptor, see QF1, in your life. I know for an absolute FACT that you are capable of so much more than you think you are and I want to challenge you to take the first steps to achieve a more rewarding and joyous life. How can I be so sure that you are capable of more than you think you are you might ask? It’s not because I have some all-knowing crystal ball; it’s because I have been there in your shoes going through life panicking at every little change that happens that I can’t control. It isn’t until now at the ripe age of 37, yeah I am still EH’ing for heaven, which I understand the importance of the DRP and why it’s the first Q point in F3’s leadership manual. I would argue that the DRP is a concept that without understanding and accepting, a man will continue to live a life of uncertainty and fall into the victim mentality that the world is out to get him and will continue to struggle until he gives up and taps out, physically or emotionally. But there is hope and that hope lies in the daily decision to do hard things. This can be getting up early to post to a workout that will improve your physical fitness, planning a date night to strengthen your relationship with your M, or attending a 3rd F group to increase your knowledge of your Creator. The key is daily discipline. The daily discipline is hard to maintain which is why you must establish guardrails. To establish guardrails you must establish routines. And routines are created by the daily positive habit behaviors which are called Bricks.
This is why for all of last year I was encouraging guys to “Build your guardrails out of Bricks”.
So take your DRP and surround yourself with like-minded brothers and with time you will be able to achieve things you never thought possible. I have never met Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice but I can say with confidence he understood the importance of doing hard things daily in order to achieve his goals.

“Today I will do what others won’t so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.”
-Jerry Rice

Stay frosty my friends,

In Da Club

Five men showed on a cold morning at Golden Corral.  After the disclaimer, we moseyed over to Bubbles and Bows for a few warm-up exercises (SSHs, Imperial Walkers, Windmills, and Plank Stretches).

Next, we were on the move around the HT building and down to the traffic circle for a round of merkins, lunges, and calf raises.  We then ventured to a little-known hill in the back of the apartment complex.  Three rounds of Nur up the hill, three burpees at the top, and ten Carolina Dry Docks at the bottom.  We made our way around the neighborhood with exercises (Merkins, Squats, and LBCs – 10 each) at each stop sign.

After traveling around the neighborhood, we ended up at a familiar fountain where we bear crawled around the circle and completed 20 dips on the guardrails.  We continued our run to the top of the hill and found a quiet parking lot for a few rounds of Mary (Flutters. LBCs, and Hello Dollies).

We returned to COT for a 2+ minute plank and finished our discussion on the Superbowl Halftime show.  50 cent was the most talked about artist.   I shared a story about a time when I was traveling to India for work.  One of the managers took me and a couple associates out to dinner.  He drove us to the restaurant in his car, playing “In Da Club”.  I remember closing my eyes thinking “I am driving around India, listening to 50 Cent”.  Wow.

Convergence: Love & a passing of the flag

Station 1 (Santini): Traditional Pain Platoon

Just your basic beat the hell out of your legs exercises of lunges, squats, and burpees intermixed with meditation and box breathing exercises. Sprint to the top of the hill, recover, and do more exercises including Moroccan night clubs and Carolina dry docks.

NMM: Anxiety and gratitude are not able to occupy the same space.

Station 2 (Shady / Maximus)

Warmup (Shady) – 21 SSH, 5 burpees, 18 SSH, 5 burpees, 12 SSH, someone whined about burpees so we did 10 diamonds merkins…then did 5 burpees
Group 1
  • partnered up and Dora style started out with 100 pull-ups.  Partner 1 on the pull-up bar, partner 2 did a lap around the playgroud
  • Stayed on playground, stayed with partner, Partner 1 AMRAP merkins while partner 2 ran the length of the playground and back to AMRAP merkins
  • Stayed on the AMRAP theme with flutters, then back to merkins, then back to flutters…then (I think) time was called

Group 2

  • Partnered up and Dora style, but this time 50 pull-ups with the run around the playground (Q modification given time and we aren’t cyborgs)
  • AMRAPs were just 1 round of merkins and flutters (again, I think…may need a lifeline here from Max)
  • We made our way to the hill with the statue where Maximus laid down the NUR up the hill and at the top 10 bomb jacks and ran to the bottom where we did 20 American hammers..we did this twice
  • W/ time to spare we ran to the top for 10 diamond merkins and ran to the bottom for 10 V-ups
  • In buzzer beater fashion, we ran to the top again for 10 ranger merkins and ran to the bottom for a partner 1 lay on the ground and grab partner 2s ankles where partner 2 would throw partner 1s feet down 10 times as you straight leg lifted them to his face

Group 3

  • Dora style 50 pull-ups with the run around the playground
  • We made our way to the hill with the statue where Maximus laid down the NUR up the hill and at the top 10 bomb jacks and ran to the bottom where we did 20 american hammers..we did this twice
  • Running low on time ran to the top for 10 diamond merkins and ran to the bottom for the ankle grabbing / feet throwing core exercise 10 times
NMM: After each of the groups had done their pull-ups, Maximus and Shady shared their thoughts and experiences on LOVE.
  • Shady – areas of focus were loving your brother and being your brothers keeper.  Sending a text or reaching out to someone to just say “hey, thinking of you” could change their day.  Realizing that the ones you love are watching you, emulating you, picking up on good and bad habits.  Realizing we don’t know it all, especially to the ones we love, is a sign of humility and a factor of growth and development.  For those of us with children, we have never been parents before so we honestly have no idea what we’re doing.  Love starts with servant leadership and personally for YHC, this usually progresses when the mouth is shut and ears are open.
  • Maximus – For my discussion on love, it begins with being intentional as love is a decision. We must make the decision to be intentional with our actions. Whether it be in our faith, marriage, parenting of our kids, with friends and yes, even with work relationships, we must be intentional. Think about how easy it is to get distracted, whether at dinner with your wife or even on a Zoom call for work. We often allow our minds to wander or even start doing something else while the other person is talking, looking for our engagement. Stop. Be the person who is present in the moment. Put the shoe on the other foot. Love that person as your relationship to them allows.

Station 3 (Pusher & Cakeboss): Love Edition

COP
  • SSHs
  • Windmills
  • Squats
  • Mtn Climbers
  • Merkins
  • IWs
Cake Boss spells love “B-U-R-P-E-E”
The Thang
  • Jacobs Ladder with Derkins and Monkey Humpers
  • Plank/Dip sequence
  • Bear crawl to top with burpees
NMM:
  • Cord of 3 strands cannot be broken. Having God in your marriage is the 3rd string. Adding communication to the marriage strengthens it. – CB
  • Gifts vs Gaps. Focus on the gifts that your wife or significant other bring vs what she is missing. Seeing her this way builds love. – Pusher
  • Much love was on display with all of the mumblechatter and fellowship. The relationships formed through F3 has increased our love internally and is reflected outward to our Ms, 2.0s, PAX and community… #morethanaworkout

Shovel Flag hand off for two leadership positions in the Fort:

Shady handed off the Nantan role to Double D
Esso handed off the Weasel Shaker role to YHC

Awesome work by the PAX today. Hard to put into words how much improved my disposition on life is since moving back to Fort Mill because of F3. Grateful for an opportunity to serve the PAX of The Fort.

NMM: Double D was the site-Q at Block Party when I started posting. If it wasn’t for his steady presence with a commitment to the integrating 2nd F and 3rd F elements into each workout, I doubt I’d have kept posting. Double D is a genuine human, I’m a better dude for knowing him, and I’m excited for his leadership.

Niece and Knees

2 Pax showed post-Super Bowl (Rams defeated the Bengals). Destiny was on the Q-roster, but not present. Hopefully he just had too many wings watching the game. Miss getting to see that HIM in the gloom.

After some mumble chatter about going back home, we warmed up literally and figuratively.
– IW
– HW
– Windmill
– Shoulder Taps
– HUMANE BURPEE (15 swings, 5 merkins, 5 goblet squats, 15 swings, 4 merkins, 4 goblet squats, etc.)

Then we ran through some sequences. Among the work was:
Swings (one hand & two hand)
High Pulls
Plank Rows
Curls
Clean & Press
Push Press
Tricep Extension
Flutters
Chest Press
Burpee Snatch
Snatch

About 15 min in, Smokey and Sugarbug drove up in the coordinating Jeeps. Good thing we stayed with the workout initially. I hate to leave another guy hanging in the gloom.

Once our number was 4, we started rotating the who called exercises.

NMM:
Don’t quit. It ain’t over, ’till we say it’s over.

Prayers for:
Shatner’s Niece
Shatner’s Knees
Liquidate’s little girl undergoing surgery in Boston

Valentine’s Day Massacre – STL Edition

Vuvuzela reached out about Q’ing a few weeks back. Luckily a top three finish for YHC happened circa Summer 2020 so eligibility had not yet expired. It was a seemingly warm 27 degrees as the PAX rolled out of the vehicles this morning. Hadn’t seen Slap Shot or Skipper in quite some time – so the smiles were a plenty. 0515. Time to work.

Warm Up

Disclaimer disclaimed. Mentioned all the necessary stuffs that one would say before running off into the dark. That feeling of warmth that I mentioned around the cars? That quickly changed as we descended into the depths of Dave Gibson Blvd for our warm up lap. Maximus and YHC started in front and felt the temps drop at least five degrees as we reached the bottom of the hill. We hit the bottom and headed back up to our vehicles for a quick mile to get the blood pumping.

YHC then took the PAX across 160 and down to the bottom of Brayden Pkwy. Pointed out the median breaks on the way to familiarize the PAX with the area. Plank up at the bottom and wait for direction.

WEINKE

Hill suicides (gassers for Band Camps’ sake).

Run to Median Break One, 10 reps of prescribed exercise, run back to bottom.

Run to Median Break Two, 20 reps of prescribed exercise, run back to bottom.

Run to Median Break Three, 30 reps of prescribed exercise, run back to bottom.

Movements for rounds of suicides were:

Suicide 1: Merkins/Flutter Kicks

Suicide 2: Curb Dips/LBC’s

Suicide 3: CDD’s/Hello Dollies

After 3 suicides and 42 flights of stairs climbed later… it was 5 minutes to 0600. So we high tailed it back to Earth Fare and ran a lap around the lot, finishing our work with 10/20/30 Squats/American Hammers along the way.

4.3 miles and 400 feet of elevation gain in 45 minutes. Not bad for a Monday morning.

NMM

Maximus high tailed it out of the quickly after we numbered off and did the namearama. His reasoning: cooking breakfast for Valentine’s Day. He’s got four lovely ladies at home and the man knows how to prioritize. That’s something we the PAX tend to neglect in our F3 world from time to time. Along the way Slap Shot and I discussed future events/races and in the midst of the conversation it came up that it’s necessary to be aware that overextending ourselves in our fitness journey tends to leave our M’s feeling a bit neglected from time to time. Be aware of that. While F3 is a good thing – our marriages deserve much more focus.

Prayers/Praises –

Pray for YHC’s family. A lot going on these past few weeks.

Pray for our minds and our abilities to keep from self isolating when going through hard things as men.

Thanks, Vuvu, for the tap. Enjoyed the lead today.

Punch List out.

Q vs Q 2022 Edition – JOC

  • QIC: River Rat
  • When: 02/23/2022
  • Pax:
  • Posted In: JOC

The Joint Operations Command (JOC) is proud to announce the 2022 edition of Q vs Q. In March of 2021 we had a blast doing Q vs Q. The camaraderie and competition was strong. There were solid showings of PAX from both regions. This gave us a chance to build better bonds with our brothers across the river and meet new men. 2022 is back and we have a whole new set of 8 Q’s representing each region.

Format is as follows:

  • River Rat will lead 5 minutes of warmup and announcements.
  • Q1 will have 10 min to lead.
  • Q2 will have 10 min to lead.
  • Q1 will have 10 min to lead.
  • Q2 will have 10 min to lead.
  • Close with a typical COT and each PAX will have a chance to vote their favorite across 3 categories. (Difficulty, Creativity, Usage of AO)

Schedule will be as follows:

2/23 – PREVIEW WEEK (River Rat on Q) Come get a lay of the land in this workout.

3/2 – Tinker Toy vs Tesh

3/9 – Band Camp vs Buffet

3/16 – Jester vs Fish Sticks

3/23 – PCH vs Spider-Man

3/30 – FINALS

In the final week. The winner of each week will advance. Each Q taking a 10 min span of time to lead.

Q Bio’s

The Fort

Tesh – This guy only wears a shirt when it’s warm. Uses a kettlebell bigger than your 3rd grader.

Band Camp – More flexible than a circus performer. Can bear crawl faster than you can run. Also, he’s a professor.

Fish Sticks – This guy is faster than kids half his age. Our only respect this time around but don’t let that fool you. He brings the heat.

Spider-Man – When not crushing ruck workouts, he’s busy planning his birthday Q at QvQ. That means danger.

Rock Hill

Tinker Toy – Has a legendary status in the region. PAX cower in fear when he’s on the schedule.

Buffet – The War Baby of the group.  Which means he’s not slow and old like the rest of us and is ready to charge.

PCH – Always smiling, always moving. PCH is know to deliver some of the most creatively devilish workouts.

Jester – This PAX logs miles on the regular. He’s also highly organized and prepared.

QSOURCE 2022.06 – GET RIGHT (Q1)

First Quadrant (Q1): Get Right – To properly align himself, a Leader takes the Daily Red Pill (DRP). This is his daily commitment to accelerate his fitness, fellowship and faith.

Get Right is usually part of my spoken message to the pax on the days I’m fortunate enough to Q. This is because the Get Right quadrant resonates with me. It rings so true because staying upright is my bane. This Q Point gives me adequate motivation to drive past my normal desires of sleeping instead of exercising, eating too much food that tastes way too good and boozing until my words slur. Maybe I was blessed with an inordinate amount of Jesters, but I think most can relate.

Getting Right incorporates the tenants of F3: Fitness, Fellowship and Faith. Understand, that this is a very specific order. Why does the first F in F3 begin with Fitness, not Faith? “Because men who have no self-control over what they eat or drink and the daily use to which they put their bodies become captive to their lack of physical fitness. Ultimately, that defines them, primarily in their own minds but also in the eyes of those around them.” Getting up to work out at a stupidly-early time each morning helps reshape how we define ourselves. It gives us belief that we can hold our Jesters and bay and continue to Accelerate toward a better version of ourselves—a better man for our family, friends, community and workplace.

Then, Fellowship “requires the High Impact Man (HIM) to put the needs of others before himself.” We are not prepositioned to put others first; we are engineered to survive by thinking of ourselves first. As we age though, we find that others become dependent on us. Our wives and children, our colleagues, our community all begin to need us more and more. This is a weight that can feel extra burdensome if we are not in the upright position. “Only in maturity does a man develop the discipline and desire to consistently promote the cause of his loved ones over his own and seek Preparedness.” This is not possible if we are overcome by our base desires of doing whatever we want in our pursuits of pleasure.

Finally, we come to Faith. How do we define Faith in F3? It is the realization that we are not the center of gravity, and this great gift of life is not given so we may serve ourselves but to serve something greater. God, Yahwey, Vajrapāṇi, Zeus, SkyQ—F3 does not define this Greater Divinity, but we do recognize it is absolutely not us. “For the un-Fit man, this is simply not possible. His lack of control over what he eats, drinks and does renders him captive to other forces.”

It is important to understand that we are not the center of the universe. It is also important to know that we cannot Serve anyone or anything without first being able to control our gluttony and sloth because “they are all-consuming.” As we continue to learn Leadership from the QSource, do not be fooled into thinking you have graduated from Get Right and can move on to the next quadrant. You, my friends, will always have a foot in the Get Right quadrant. Life moves fast. It can be difficult. Staying upright is hard. The following Q Points are a roadmap to helping up stand strong again when life drops us to our knees.

If you see me down, know that I’m in need of your Leadership. You’ll have the same from me.

SYITG,
Esso

QSOURCE 2022.05 – PREPAREDNESS (F5)

If you remember no other Foundational Principles from the QSource thus far, this is the one to remember. To me, this is the basic point of all QSource and of all of leadership. It’s near and dear to my heart, and everything else contained in the QSource is simply leading us to Preparedness (that’s why G3L is called the 4 quadrants of Preparedness…). I will ask your grace as I share some personal experiences, but they are the only kind I have.

So why is Preparedness hoisted up as such an important virtue? Though this has been true for all of time, the last couple of years have pointed out in some clear ways how if we as a people were more prepared, the overall level of suffering and struggle could have been diminished. As the pandemic started to spread and so much was still unknown, we saw all kinds of behavior that was strange and often disturbing. We all saw videos of people beating each other up in grocery aisles for toilet paper. Toilet paper… let that sink in. Accosting another human being because you are so afraid you might not be able to wipe your ass in the most comfortable way you want to. But it wasn’t really about that. Because the masses live their lives so unprepared, they were reacting to a complete lack of knowing what to do next in an uncertain situation. As we learn in GrowRuck and other F3 Leadership training, in periods of high stress and limited visibility, you are likely to default to your level training/preparedness. Under pressure, we often see the results of being reactive vs. proactive.

The good news? This is all fixable with a tiny amount of discipline applied over a period of time. Like drops of water that eventually wear a hole in a rock, with the right guardrails in place, and a small but compounding effort, we can become largely immune to the tough situations that life will throw at us.

But only if we are prepared.

Hide and seek

YHC was looking forward to my return “East of the Peach Stand”. Had my board, gloves, keys, and phone and, as usual, about to go out the door when the 2.0 needs attention. Never fails. Knowing that letting the M deal with the situation would NOT go well for me, I got the boy back in bed and left for my Q late.

the gloom

I knew I was hella late (3 whole minutes, really) and arrived to a parking lot with three vehicles and zero PAX. So I got out and strained my ears trying to echolocate the PAX I was reasonably certain were around somewhere. That failed miserably, so it was time to take a self guided tour of the area. Grabbed my headlamp outta the car and traveled down to FMCoG. No PAX there, the game of hide and seek begins. Up the stairs and through the back lot for FBCFM, nope, through the north entrance up to Tom Hall St. Still no luck. West to Main, south and down the stairs with a left at Emmets Social Table (if they were open, I’d probably have stopped there). Dang, nothing!

Down Academy and, what’s that? 3 figures in the dark? Yes, I think I found them crossing the road, headed to FMCoG! Picked up the pace and met up with the PAX to some light hearted ribbing. Did I mention i was carrying the exercise board the whole way? No??

the thang

The board displayed a number of exercises and rep counts, after each set, run around the 221 building and move down the board. Easy

20x Squat
20x Merkins
20x Lunges (single count)
20x One Leg Deadlift
20x Alternating Superman
20x Apollo Ohno*
20x 4-count SSH
20x calf raises
20x BBSU

We made it through to the SSH + a lap with about 5 minutes left on the clock, so we ran up to the FBCFM parking lot, did our calf raises, up/down the stairs and ended with some leg stretches.

*YHC mislabeled these as Bobby Hurley’s, but if you know anything about me, you know sports are not of interest, and I’m okay confusing the two. The board said “Bobby Hurley (skaters?)”, so you know what I was going for.

Cot

A lot going on in COT today with a lot of heavy prayers needed. YHC took us out imploring to Sky Q to give us wisdom to deal with these things

nmm

Every time I get to hang out at Footloose there is a lot of mumblechatter, and today was no exception. I’ve never really gotten to hear a lot from Kielbasa, so today was his day to shine, and boy did he have some great stories to tell. At one point I found myself asking him to lead the count for SSH just so we could get some work done.

There was also a VERY generous helping of ribbing from Small World and Sticks. Just the right amount, I think, for a Q that is late.  Every time I named an exercise they seemed to have already done it! However, I saw through their game and, as I said before, if the M is unhappy, things will not go well.

And, hey, that’s what F3 is about. Getting fit physically, mentally, and spiritually requires a lot of reps, mumblechatter, and bearing ones soul. If it’s not a “black diamond” Q, then mumblechatter away my fellow PAX.
