Four Corners and Faith at The Deep

Wow what a BEAUTIFUL day. Seeing God’s creative beauty on display is a great way to start your day. So is working your mind, body, and spirit with your PAX. I showed up 5-10 mins early as I try to do and there was not a soul in sight. Did I miss a memo or something? About 5 mins before launch folks rolled in. It ended up being 4 of us committed to making ourselves better and stronger. Some may say only four PAX. My opinion numbers do not really matter until it is only 1. Things go alot better with company. And we all know misery loves company, so I had to dish out some misery 🙂

No FNGs, so I gave the cliff notes version of a disclaimer (do not die) and off we went.

Slow run around the parking lot and across the street to the middle school parking lot next to the track/field. The COP:

  • 20 SSH
  • 20 WM
  • 20 IW
  • 20 MNC
  • 20 PJs
  • Downward dog and honeymooner

Some good conversations, then off to the track. No speed work today from me (yay!).

The Thang – 4 Corners

It is a standard 400M oval track. Pointed out 4 areas where an exercise will be done in ascending reps….5, 10, 15, 20…as we run around the track. Do one exercise at 5 reps at one point, then run to the next point and do the same exercise at 10, and so on, until you return to the start and then repeat with another exercise. No rest between rounds. In all, you run a mile and do 50 reps of 4 exercises. The four exercises were:

  • Merkins
  • Squats
  • CDDs
  • Calf Raises

The PAX did GREAT. We all kept together through the whole thing. ALOT of great conversations, getting to know each other better as we push each other along. That’s what I love about F3 – the 2nd F during the first F. After we finished we considered doing another lap with a different exercise, but decided against. Instead we did bear crawls all the way across the width of the field, and returned with a crab walk. Then I went into a conversation about faith to give us a little needed rest (see moleskin). Then off to the playground equipment.

Ab Lab

Utilizing the swings for some exercise, we performed a descending rep count of 4 exercises in a row. Do all four in succession at 20 reps, then all four at 15, then 10, then 5. Little to no rest between rounds. The four ab exercises were:

  • LBCs with feet on swing to keep those legs up
  • I’ll call these the ‘Royales’ for I believe he came up with these – essentially in Derkin position with feet on swings, then pull your knees up to your chest then fully extend back. Full extension and knees to chest were key to feel the burn
  • Flutters
  • Hello Dollys

After that we were all pretty beat. BUT we had about 15 minutes to go….this was nearly a HIIT workout so things went quick. I decided it was People’s choice time

  • Brickhouse – 30 merkins OYO
  • Peg – 10 burpees OYO
  • Nemo – 30 squats in cadence
  • NASA – 25 dips on playground equipment OYO
  • NASA – people’s chair and BTTW for 40 sec counts each

Then we finished with a slow Indian run to the COT. GREAT work by the PAX!!

* Praises for all PAX trying to get themselves better in any way

Moleskin – Faith

There is a theme to all of the workouts above – everything is in 4’s. Being a former engineer, I know that four points make a strong geometric shape that can be built upon.

This month’s theme is about Faith. That is a mighty strong word, one that transcends into and touches several aspects of one’s life. In a nutshell, faith is the unwavering belief that something will happen or is true without any hard ‘proof’ or substantiation. Knowing the sun will rise the next day, knowing that you will wake and breathe another day, that the earth will rotate and orbit around the sun. Knowing that Sky Q will always be there for you in your time of need, to give you strength, courage, discipline, wisdom, and unconditional love when you need it most. There is also Faith in Jesus and his teachings, his Word, his unconditional Love that the Son of God has showed us the way of mercy, grace, sacrifice, and forgiveness of our sins. Plus, there is also Faith in yourself  – that you will have the strength, courage, discipline, wisdom to do the right thing when the time calls. Finally, there is also faith in others. I believe that everyone has the ability to be good, do good, to do the ‘right’ thing when the time calls. It is just that some choose to not to. Whether it be an outcome of circumstance, environment, or bad judgement, those bad choices are not really what people want to do but rather what was unfortunately done. No child is born bad, but as a byproduct of their environment are groomed to make bad decisions or have to do so in order to survive. This is where sometimes we as a society have to be the light in their darkness – to have mercy, show grace, and bestow forgiveness and ultimately have faith that they will be able to get out of their situation and improve themselves, to become a better person and make better choices.

These are what I call the Four Corners of Faith – in God, Jesus, Ourselves, Others. They are all supportive of each other. They are the foundation of a strong, forgiving, accepting, prosperous society.

We practice this in a micro level in F3 to a degree. We have the third F. Plus, through the 2nd F we support, encourage, push each other to improve each other in some way and invigorate the leader we all have within, regardless of who/what we are and where we came from. It’s unconditional. When one blossoms because of this, the natural reaction is to pay that forward to others. As I mentioned – we all want  to do the right thing for ourselves and others, but it is a choice we all have to actively make.

The night before, Royale was looking for someone to step up and Q. What the heck. I was going to post to The Deep after a trail run, but the run fell through. One of the core principles of F3 is everything is peer led. And as everyone should know by now

The mission of F3 is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership.

We are all leaders, whether you’re in F3 or not. Some just do not know it – the faith needed to realize this needs to be planted, nurtured, grown. The beauty of these F3 1st and 2nd F’s is that they are 100% supportive, with your PAX pushing, pulling, encouraging you on to push yourself further than before in many aspects of one’s life, for when you push your body, you push your mind as well – and strengthen your faith. The third F is what makes it explode – when those Four Corners of Faith are fully realized in those moments of clarity is when it all comes together with a bang! But F3 will not work without peer leadership.

When the call went out for a Q at The Deep, Royale had faith that someone, anyone, would step up and into that role of Q. He had faith in his PAX. Nobody wants to let anyone down – themselves or others. I did not want to let my PAX down, for Royale had faith that someone would step up, so I jumped in blind and head first for I had faith that others would be there to push each other to make themselves better and stronger. When it all comes together like that, we not only strengthen our body, but also out mind, soul, and our faith.

Four PAX did just that today.

God Bless and thank you for the opportunity to lead.

Double Barrel Run-n-Gun

  • QIC: CakeBoss and OldBay
  • When: 07/07/17
  • Pax: Atlas, Corruption, Mainframe, Bonsai, CableGuy, Boeheim, CakeBoss, OldBay
  • Posted In: Run 'n Gun

It’s become somewhat of a tradition that if there’s going to be an F3 meeting of some sort, ya might as well put a workout before it. Not sure if this is to slide another workout in on the hall pass issued by the M for the meeting, or if because meetings are more productive after everyone has been physically beat down. Regardless, Run ‘n Gun is probably the most popular pre-meeting workout, give it’s time of day and day of week. So, when YHC pinged Corruption about who was on Q for a pre-SiteQ Meeting workout at Run ‘n Gun, he’s response was “You are.” Guess I should have saw that one coming. And I actually solicited the help of CakeBoss to make it a co-Q.

As CakeBoss and I each arrived at the workout, we were delighted (not really) to see we had worn the exact same hi-viz yellow F3 shirt, and black shorts. “Twinsies!!” we shrieked in unison and ran to hug each other (again, not really).

The Thang

1815 hit, and a total of 8 pax were ready to go. Weather was very pleasant…cooler than the previous few days, which was nice. CakeBoss gave the disclaimer, and we were off running the trail in the woods. We moseyed down the path to the pond for COP.

-SSHs
-Squats
-Imperial walkers
-Merkins
-Hillbilly Walkers

Mosey to top of Street
-Plank Series

Mosey to School for handoff to OldBay. We gathered in the front of the school where two cones had been placed, about 70 yards apart (down the stretch of the student drop-off path).

Partner up, size doesn’t matter. Partner 1 was to do a moving exercise from one cone to the second, while partner 2 did a stationary exercise. Once partner 1 reached the second cone, he ran a loop back to the first cone. Also during this time, partner 2 started the moving exercise. Once partner 1 got back from his loop run, he started on the stationary exercise until partner 2 got back.

For the first round, the moving exercise was: 1 pair of lunges, 1 broad jump, 1 burpee. Then 2 of each, then 3…and so on until the second cone was reached (most pax got to about 7 before they reached the second cone). The stationary exercises was plank punches.

Switch back to CakeBoss for a variety of stationary partner exercises in the grass.
-20 Partner Derkins
-20 Partner Leg raises
-20 Partner merkin/squats

Switch back to OldBay for round 2 of the exercise done before. Moving exercise was the same, but the stationary exercise was more of a variety:

-20 Monkey Humpers
-20 Box cutters
-20 Dry Docks
-20 Deep Squats
-20 Plank Jacks
-20 Apolo Ohno
-20 Chop Sticks
-LBCs until the 6 came in.

Time was nearly up, so we headed back to COT. Had to end a little early on account of the SiteQ meeting.

Naked Man Moleskin
Run-N-Gun is a great AO, not only because the terrain is so diverse, but also because it is TheFort’s only non-morning workout. If you’ve not made time to post to RNG, let me strongly recommend you find some time in your schedule and do so. Better yet, tell Corruption (via Slack) you want to get on his Q schedule.

During the workout, I mentioned a Bible chapter we recently read in our “1 Year Through The Bible” group. 1 Corinthians 15 talks about “dead” seeds growing into living, renewed bodies – bodies that we won’t have any idea what will look like until that time. If we take that same concept and apply it to the seeds of Christ’s message that we cast in peoples lives, we also quickly discover that we don’t have any idea how those seeds will grow. After I accepted Christ in college, I returned home and very much wanted my two closest friends back there to have the same relationship with the Lord. I began casting seeds, with a pretty specific plan in mind of how they would grow. But they didn’t follow the path I had planned. Not even close, as a matter of fact. It was disappointing, but God had other plans. During the brief times we had together (college was far from home), I continued to cast seeds, and pray.

I believe that’s what God wants us to do: keep sharing his message and his love through our words and our deeds (casting seeds) and let him take care of the germination. In the case of my two hometown buddies, both of them are now strong followers of Christ, and I feel like I had nothing to do with it. Perhaps some of the seeds I casted helped in some small way…15 years later than I had planned, but exactly the timing God had planned!

Excellent work by all pax today. Thanks, Corruption, for allowing us to Q!

Sound the alarm

  • QIC: Pusher

  • Posted In: Uncategorized

10 Pax posted at the Ranch for a beatdown by YHC. One car pulled in blaring music and it happened to be Drop Thrill. We, the Pax of the Fort, have been blessed to have Drop Thrill join us. He embodies the type of leader who invigorates others. Since he has joined, he has lost a significant amount of weight, contributed to all 3Fs and just been a good dude! Thats what this is all about.

As we circled up, Drop Thrill mentioned that he had been having some chest pain lately and was getting nervous due to family history. Luckily, we have Backdraft as the Site Q (another HIM) who has medical training and directed him to the urgent care. Drop Thrill left immediately.

I am pleased to say that Drop Thrill is doing okay and it was a false alarm. While it may have been false, I am reminded about others int the Pax who have received an alarm or will be receiving one soon. I immediately think about Boeheim…a guy who was slower than me (thats slow) a few years back and then had a heart attack. I will not forget standing in his kitchen with him and his M. There was a significant amount of fear but also a sense of purpose. That purpose has manifested itself in a new job as a teacher, a 1:36  half marathon (ridiculous), a mentor to others seeking treatment after a heart attack and someone who cherishes his M, his family and his friends a little more.

Why do we need an alarm? Why is “busy” so overused as a term these days? I probably used that term more than 10 times today. What am I chasing? Will I ever reach this or I am already living a dream? I am definitely blessed beyond my wildest dreams. Why don’t I relish this more?

If you read this backblast, just know that there will be an alarm at some point in your life. Maybe seeing Drop Thirill’s face this morning was mine. The question is not about the alarm but what you do after it goes off. Will you hit the snooze button, turn if off or get out of the fartsack with a sense of purpose. I hope that you will hold me accountable to kick off the sheets and get moving!

The Thang

We did a lot of SSH, merkins, LBCs, along with other exercises. All are better for having posted in some form or fashion

Paradise Q and PAX Prep Info

  • QIC: Bolt, Deacon
  • When: 06/10/17
  • Pax: All Paradise Q's and FM area PAX
  • Posted In: G-Fit

We have now had 3 successful workouts in Paradise on Sat’s at 0900 at Steele Street Park. Please continue to come out and support our diversity and community efforts. Thanks to our Q’s and supporting PAX!

As this AO grows, Q’s please be aware that regular workout standards may need to be modified. We are targeting both adult men, and males in the 12-18 range, and the workout will need to accommodate all attendees. However, we are also not turning anyone away under that age. Maintain a weinke that can be modified based on those in attendance.

Flyers are distributed and list the F3 main workout at 0900, followed by pickup basketball, games, etc, at 1000. Q’s are not required to stay after 1000 but are reminded that we are also trying to build community relations. It is possible that additional attendees may arrive after the main workout. With additional PAX in attendance, support to the Q should available at both times.

PAX are encouraged to attend before 0900 to engage and recruit. Sometimes a simple mosey around the neighborhood results in on-the-spot EH’s and attendance.

An AO Paradise-specific bag has been put together that has basketballs, gloves (until distributed), cones and other items that may be helpful. As of this writing, there was also a second bag that had extra basketballs to be distributed to attendees until gone. Please pass the bag(s) on to the next Q, or Bolt or Deacon, during the week.

Also, consider the following when Q’ing:

  1. Paradise is your community, too. Don’t let the evil one convince you of anything contrary to that fact.
  2. Adding basketball to the workouts brings more inclusion of the community by meeting people where they are. Men like to hoop in Paradise.
  3. The sun is up at 9 AM. Exercise the areas under the trees for shade to prevent overheating.
  4. Not all Pax have babysitting available Saturday mornings. Keep the workouts in the park so 2.0s can use the playground as their Daddies sweat it out.
  5. Discuss the 3rd F theme of the month with the Pax. The young Pax really appreciate and absorb that positive message.
  6. Not all Pax will have gloves and water bottles. If possible, bring them for the Pax.

Bottom line: The opportunity to engage, enrich and impact our community is now. Get involved. Steele Street Park is at 600 Steele Street, Fort Mill, SC 29715

All PAX, help us fill the Q schedule: bit.ly/F3TheFortQSchedule

Exercises were done, words were spoken.  The one thing that stuck out was a discussion on diet.  If you do F3 exercises (especially ones that are geared toward strength with less endurance) you are going to build muscle mass.  So you could just end up gaining weight.  If you want to elevate your level of fitness (and “look better naked” as some meme’s would put it), you have to change your diet.  Me personally, I eat nothing in the “grass” family.  No wheat, rice, corn, oats, bamboo shoots, sugar cane.  I only drink water, hot coffee/tea, and wine.  I didn’t adopt this diet for any aesthetic reason but other health issues. I’m not recommending anything just saying this is what I’ve found improves my life.  “Test everything, hold fast to what is good.”  1Thes5:21

One random thing that did happen that day… Airborne forgot his bell the previous week and some dude showed up at the end of the workout asking if we left one.  #faithinhumanity
