Rock Region invades Block Party, Week 2

Twelve of The Fort and The Rock’s finest joined YHC for a little fun at Block Party this morning. It was YHC’s first posting at Block Party and I appreciated Double D giving me the invitation to Q.

The Thang:
Disclaimer was disclaimed–one FNG (Dollywood)

COP:
SSH x 20
Merkin x 10
Mountain Climber x 15
Carolina Dry Dock x 20

Grab a curb, perform the following: Derkin on the curb, then flip over perform a dip, then flip back over perform a Derkin, etc until all of our arms were appropriately burning.

Mosey over to the swingset for 10 pullups, followed by 10 burpees.

Mosey over to Founders parking lot for the following:
Parking lot shuffle (side shuffles back and forth on parking spaces)
Bear Crawl
Crab Walk

Mosey over to hill at WEP for 11’s with 1 jump squat at bottom, 10 merkins at top. Keep rolling until 10 jump squats at the bottom, 1 merkin at top.

Mosey to COT.

I want to thank Double D for the invitation to Q. When I got word that he was looking for guest Q’s from Rock Hill, I jumped at the opportunity. I can remember when I began posting at F3 almost two and half years ago–and men like Double D, CSPAN, Deacon, Pusher, Santini, Chaser, and others were constantly supporting our Pax in Rock Hill by posting with us. Today was a small opportunity to repay a bit of that investment in us south of the river as we’ve grown to over 500 Pax. Also appreciate my brothers from The Rock–Apache, Bill Nye, and Sapper posting with me.

Good work by all today–especially our FNG, Dollywood. Glad to have you out!

Prayers and praises:
Our young people as the prevalence of suicide and other similar negative behaviors continues to grow. Find a kid and invest in them.
Prayers for families dealing with Cancer.

Schrute out!

Is there any doubt?

20 Pax posted ’round the Shovel Flag to SlowBurn on a pleasant morning with a spectacular full moon.  Yes, Twister was howling.  The rest of the Pax were ruminating over whether YHC would actually deliver a Moderate workout.  The Disclaimer was offered, including an invitation to modify (upward is fine, too, though no Burpee Challenge pax in the crowd on this particular morning, so no real demand to go that direction).  And then we were off…

The theme for the month of June is #Faith, as in “Oh, yee pax of little faith!”  Yes, there were lots of doubts at the start regarding the intensity of the Weinke.  I have to defer to Site Q, Barry Manilow, for his report.  Low number of reps and many ten counts.  Plus, breaks for some commentary from YHC on Faith and Doubt.  You decide.  The pax were pushed and they pushed themselves — well done, men!

Speaking of Faith, the pax offered contributions throughout on the theme.  Change Order offered how having faith in himself wasn’t quite working out.  When we came to the Trump/Pence office, YHC spoke of likely doubts and probed about Faith.  Vernon responded — God’s in charge he said.  Finally, Twister offered a strong testimony of faith and doubt regarding his brothers in the GRC.  His doubts were met by the faith of his brothers, and he made it to the finish.

Along the way, we identified some new sprinters among the pax, including Destiny, Deep Dish and Change Order.  Strong push, boys!

We also uncovered the identities of several future Qs for Barry Manilow — Optimist, MASH, Vernon, Couples & McGillis.

Thanks to Barry Manilow for the invite.  It is always an honor to lead honorable men.

15 of The Fort’s finest gathered for a Hump day beatdown at one of my favorite AO’s, the mighty Pantheon. #Cobains to the pax member that has been left off the list. #technology issues.

Q-drenaline got me there early enough to see Fish Sticks finishing a nice pre-run with Cornhole rolling in shortly thereafter. As the cars kept rolling in, YHC was thinking that the Weinke may be a tad long. Changes would be made on the fly.

Warm-up lap around the small loop included Toy Soldiers, Power Skips (my form was way off), Karaoke and Butt Kickers.

COP near the flag included:

  • SSH- 25
  • IW – 20
  • Merkin Clock – 5 (done at 12, 3, 5 and 9 o’clock positions)
  • Squats – 15
  • Moroccan Night Clubs * 25
  • Abe Vigodas (sloow Windmills) * 15

The Thang:

Mosey to basketball court in back. First note on Faith: FAITH MEANS TRUSTING IN ADVANCE WHAT WILL ONLY MAKE SENSE IN REVERSE- ALSO- FAITH DOESN’T MAKE THINGS EASY, IT ONLY MAKES THEM POSSIBLE.

Partner Up- size will matter later on. Partners go to opposite side of courts, suicides on foul lines and meet in the middle for parter hand slap merkins.  10 reps, 3 rounds, Suicides, meet middle for leg throws. 20 reps, 3 rounds, suicides, meet middle for partner squats. 20 reps, 3 rounds

bear crawl to center, meet middle for Partner Derkins (real crowd pleaser), 15 reps each bear crawl back.  This is where partner size came into play. Had planned for 3 rounds, but the Q was gassed. Omaha!

Mosey To the Kindergarten Playground – 20 step ups each leg, 30 dips

Mosey to Flag- Second note on Faith. :Related my favorite Metaphor from CS Lewis on Faith. He explained that having strong faith means that you are like a clean mirror reflecting God’s love for you to everyone you meet. The weaker your faith, the dirtier the mirror. The deeper your faith, the cleaner is your mirror.  Then, over to the flag pole for TOTE THE BRICK- 10 separate exercises. . Pax do each exercise while 1 member carries the cinder block to the last column and back. This portion provided some nice encouragement amongst the Pax as well as some quality mumblechatter about Carolina Dry Docks or “CDDs” sounding like a communicable disease.Good stuff.

Ended with 2 minutes of Mary- Fluttahs & Protractor. .

Various announcements- read the Newsletter, there is a LOT going on.

COT- A prayer AND praise for our Mustard Seeds in Lakewood Ranch, Cincinnati and Twin Cities. YHC relayed how amazing it is that fellow pax from The Fort (Bing, Senator Tressel and Solid State) have been so integral in launching these new Regions. Reminded all that we have a region full of HIMs and to be thankful for that.

Prayers for a friend of Half Shell going to rehab and prayers for parents of pre-teens and teens as we seek to guide our kids before they reach adulthood.

NMM:, #cobains to Cornhole and Jekyll as I forgot to mention your work helping to launch Houston and Seattle regions, respectively. Truly humbled by the honor to lead a hard working and big group of the Fort’s finest.

Thanks Fish Sticks for the opportunity..

Short Sale signing off.

YHC will admit that he has long been a “Goals Guy”. In the past, I have been one of those guys who set lofty goals for myself and others only to be disappointed if I didn’t achieve that goal. In corporate America, setting goals is commonplace. And just when you think you might achieve that goal, companies set a “stretch goal” that is just outside of your reach but may be possible if you work a little harder.

As I think about my past, I set many goals to be a better Father, Husband, Leader and mostly to be be at fitness. Heck, I even made my kids set goals as part of their New Years Resolutions. Honestly, my children were better at achieving their goals than I have been.

What I have learned is that breaking goals into smaller chunks makes them much easier to swallow and adds more consistency in my life. There is a word for this….HABITS. F3 has become a habit for me. Sure it was hard at first to get up in the morning so early. But this habit has translated into those lofty goals that I had set for myself in the past of being a better Father, Husband, Leader and getting in shape. Here is a good read on the matter… https://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2017/06/habits-vs-goals/

With this in mind, 13 Pax arrived at Quagmire to celebrate those habits that make us better and remind us to get rid of the bad habits too!

Q101 @ F3Footloose

  • QIC: CSPAN
  • When: 6/8/17
  • Pax: 21 HIM = watch the video ^^^
  • Posted In: Footloose

Conditions were perfect

Q101 (disclosure- this doc is plagiarized with all credit going to others):

PHILOSOPHY

Q – Pax Relationship: The unspoken social contract between the Pax and a Q: “We will follow until you give us a reason not to”. The Pax are very forgiving toward a new Q. Most have been through it and understand the anxiety.

PREPARATION

Considerations for the first few Qs:

Launch a quick grenade over twitter, let local Pax know that this is your VQ, most F3 vets enjoy being part of a VQ Pax.
Simplicity/Complexity and Originality
Keep the Weinke simple. The fewer moving parts the better. Many first-time Q Weinke’s are too complicated.
Keep it familiar. New exercises or sets that require more than the briefest of explanations usually lead to confusion.
Don’t be shy about stealing a Weinke, or parts of a Weinke, from another more-experienced Q.

Go with strengths: “Don’t Q it if you can’t do it.”

Cadence Counting – PRACTICE THIS, OUT LOUD, BEFORE FIRST Q
Next exercise is [brief pause], the merkin.
The Pax then repeats the exercise called.
Speak loudly so all Pax can hear. You are in charge.
Start(ing) position [brief pause],
Not “exercise” position. Start position.
The “Move” is to get the Pax to the position required to begin exercise. The “Move” is not a command to begin exercising.
In cadence [brief pause],
In cadence simply means the Q counts the movements (1-2-3) and the Pax calls out the repetitions in unison (“One!”).
The Q counts should correspond to a distinct movement in the exercise. It is in rhythm. For example, for a merkin: “1” is the movement to the down position, “2” is the movement to the plank position, “3” is the movement back to the down position, the Pax call of “One!” is the move back to plank position.
The Q indicates the completion of an exercise by a higher inflection on his last repetition.
See OBT & Dredd’s excellent tutorial on the how and why of cadence counting: http://f3nation.com/2012/02/22/f3-tv-how-to-count/

NOTE: When a Q does not lead an exercise in cadence that would normally be done that way, he is giving away his authority to lead the Pax. He is implicitly telling the Pax that he not able to count in cadence or is not willing to learn.

Weinke review with Site Q or experienced Q. Not required, but a good idea for a vet to check for potential issues.

Too long, too short: It takes a few times go get a good feel for how long your Weinke will take to execute. Be flexible if running too long and have a couple of stand-by ideas in mind in case you run long. Think through transitions from one set to another. Minimize dead time, standing around.

Tap a vet – if you need time to get unsmoked or burned through Weinke in 30 minutes, there’s no shame in asking a vet to lead Mary or the next section of the workout.

EXECUTION

FNG inquiry and Disclaimer – every workout should start with an FNG Inquiry and Disclaimer
Disclaimer:
Why: We want to disclaimer in front of Pax because having witnesses adds a layer of protection above asking if they’ve read it on the website.
What: Main points in your own words:
I am not a professional
This is self-policing: Stop or modify the exercises as required

Take control—be the leader. Be assertive, don’t mumble. If something doesn’t work and you have to audible, acknowledge it and move on to the next exercise. Don’t apologize, just move on.

Observation – Do your best to keep an eye on the pax during the workout to see if you are losing people, either from it being too easy, too confusing, or too hard. During your first few Qs, it is hard enough just to make it through the workout. Ask your Site Q or another experienced Q to keep an eye on things and whisper in your ear if needed.

FOLLOW UP

Twitter counts – check with Site Q on whether he or the Q will tweet the count. Remember to use workout tag (i.e., #TheArmoryF3 also include @F3TheFort) and the #F3Counts

Backblast –
Part of the workout Qs responsibility to post the Backblast, not the Site Q. The Site Q may volunteer to post the Qs first workout on his behalf but that is at his discretion .
Get backblast credentials BEFORE first Q so that you are prepared to write up BB when it’s done. The website interface is not difficult and will take only a few minutes to learn. Here again, your Site Q will be an invaluable aid in assisting you to post your first BB.
Get login credentials from Gears

Post Mortem – follow up with your Site Q about what went right, what could be improved, what was a disaster, etc. Seek out honest feedback from other veteran Q and Pax. The best way to improve is to address your weaknesses head on.

NMM

We reviewed COP = Circle of pain
We reviewed Q’ing from the back (partner work)
We reviewed Q’ing from the front (follow the leader style)
We reviewed Q’ing a group with mixed fitness levels (stair and ramp routine)
We reviewed parking lot across the line routine
and closed out with four corners…you can Q all of these!

Thank you for the invite for Q-School Q and the great attendance

AYE!

It was a small but hardy band of men who took on the challenge of the swamp this Friday.  What we lacked in numbers, we made up for in constant complaining led by Cable Guy.  YHC took the lead as we satisfied all of our shopping needs with a tour through Rivergate.

The Thang:

The warm-up

Slow mosey to Home Depot parking lot.  Circle up .  20 seal jacks, 20 windmills, 20 Morroccian nightclubs,  20 carolina drydocks, 15 mountain climbers, 10 burpees

Mosey to Gander Mountain parking lot.  Divide into 2 groups (There were only 4 of us so this was relatively easy.  Group 1:  One man straps on a 20lb weight vest and runs a 1/4 mile, while his partner begins the following exercises:  400 flutter kicks, 300 lbcs, 200 lunges, 100 muricans.  Group 2:  One man takes a 35 lb kettlebell and does 10 tricep extensions followed by 10 hammer curls.  His partner does the following:  400 squats, 300 shoulder taps, 200 plank jacks, 100 drydocks.

Each partner continues to switch throughout the process.  After everyone has had a chance to run with the weight vest, then the groups rotate.  Each man should run with the vest at least twice.

Long mosey back to COT

Looking for shade at Guidance

  • QIC: Dawg Pound
  • When: 06/10/17
  • Pax: Chihuaha(co-Q), Sherlock, Casanova, Travolta, The Boss, Curry, Yzerman, NASA, Chicken Hawk, Roxanne, Decibel.
  • Posted In: Guidance

It was an honor to lead the workout at Guidance.  Especially, considering, I think this is one of the most tangible and noticeable ways to be a HIM.

Including YHC there were 12 PAX of varying ages ready to participate.

Started with a disclaimer and warm up and moseyed up to the church yard so we could get some work in in a more shady locale.

Once we got there I turned the Q over to Chihuahua who I’ve grown rather close to through working with him through an organization outside of the CAH.

He called out the following exercises:

Merkins

LBCs

After that we did our first lap of the modified “3 corners”.  For 3 corners we did 25 reps of a different excercise at each corner.  Please bear with me, as I have lost my Weinke and I also did not save the document I typed it up on.  So rather than try to guess and be wrong, I will simply tell you we did 25 reps at each corner.

After lap 1 Chihuahua again led us in two exercises.  His call and cadence improved and he started to show some confidence.

Lap 2 of “3 corners”, again, I don’t remember, sorry.  My bad

After lap 2, Chihuahua again led us in two exercises.  I believe he thought he was done, but we were able to coax him into doing more and he did a great job.

After the 3 corners we found some softer, non-fire ant infested grass and did Jack Webbs.  I am sure the younger men of the group thought it was easy and it was the first two rounds, but then it got more difficult.  I love introducing someone new to Jack Webbs.

Following Jack Webbs we went with one of my contributions, the Lt. Dan Indian Run.  Normally an Indian Run falls apart fairly early due to the varying degrees of fitness in the group.  The Lt Dan Indian Run solves that problem.  Like an Indian Run the man in the back still runs to the front, however, those in the line do Lt. Dans-lunge, lunge, squat.  This slows things down and allows any PAX who can jog even a little bit to get to the front.  We did this until we got to the street and mosey back to the COT.

While in the CoT one of the CAH PAX suggested we do our next workout at the YMCA.  This seemed like a great time to review the 5 principles of F3.

We talked a little about faith, announcements, praise and prayers.

DawgPound

Sorry for the lackluster BB.  I will do better next time.
