F3 Dads 2021 Session 1

45 PAX gathered up at the Calhoun St parking lot

BIG circle up on the green space for some warmups. All in cadence,
– SHH
– Imperial Walker
– Hillbilly Walker
– Squat
– Merkin (Skeeter wanted to call this in cadence, but got nervous in the center of the circle. We’ve gotta give our kids a chance to fail.)
– Played: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Burpee
– Just like Rock, Paper, Scissors
except the loser has to do a burpee for every person in their family group that beats them. i.e., if you’ve got 3 kids they all throw paper and you throw rock, then you do 3 burpees.

Line up behind one side of the cones
– Dad vs. Kids race: stipulation Dads have to bear crawl.
Loser did 10 burpees counted by the kids
Lots of form critiquing
– Dad vs. Kids race part 2: stipulation Dads have to run backwards (Nur)
Loser does 5 burpees
– Dads vs. Kids race part 3: stipulation Kids bear crawl, Dads lunge walk
Loser does 5 burpees
– Dads vs. Kids race part 4: stipulation Kids run backwards, Dads run forwards….Finally!
– Dads load up your kids and carry them across the finish line

Sprint over to the hill (there were two guys doing a weight workout…did somebody EH them? Also, there was a dad up at the top of the hill with his daughter. Did somebody EH them?)

Load up and carry the kids up the hill
kids do 5 merkins at the top
Mosey Down

3-leg bear crawl up
mosey down
3-leg bear crawl (other leg) up
mosey down

Mosey over to the tumbling mat. Kids can make their dad run up the hill by doing a trick on the mat.

COT and popsicles

I got the red/white/blue ones thinking they’d be more popular. But the kids love the little freezer pops. Duly noted!

Pantheon Pain

38 Special asked for a substiq and YHC answered the call

After a proper disclaimer, went into immediate COP then ran a mile to TC Baptist parking lot for vacuum cleaners until fail (flapjack for partner to do the same). An old fashion Dora with the running partner doing bear crawls up and jog back. head back to COT area but do burpee broad jumps the length of the school and reverse was a squat accumulator. pillar 1 was one squat and duck walk to the second pillar. then 2 squats duck walk to the third, etc, all the way up to 11. knocked out some ab exercises to finish it up.

PAX were beat down and satisfied, to my pleasure.  Thanks 38 for the opportunity!

Things Happen When They Are Supposed To Happen

Today was my last Q before I donate a kidney to a friend on Monday (1/25).  The workout was designed to highlight some of the lessons I’ve learned throughout this process and I hope to impart on the 10 PAX that showed up because they could.

I started my journey to kidney donation back on September 5th when a friend of mine posted to FB “I’m dying. Some of you already know this. Both of my kidneys have failed due to my lifelong struggle with diabetes. There is no hope for them to ever resume function. I’m on dialysis now as of March. I’m normally a private person when it comes to my health, but things have changed in my life.  I’m in pain every day and have had numerous hospitalizations in the past few months.”

Read that and tell me you don’t want to find a way to help.  Now, let’s be honest, I had NEVER in my life considered donating a kidney until I knew someone who was in need.  That night, I registered with Duke University to see if I could be a match.

Now, nothing happens fast.  Nothing happens on the time table you have in your mind.  We have to trust in God and lets his process and plan play out.  It was several weeks before I heard back from Duke to talk about the process to see if it’ll work.  There are numerous blood tests, scans, evals.  Let’s just say, it’s not easy.  And in hindsight, it shouldn’t be easy.  This is not something to take lightly, but it could be easier.

So, how does all of this fold into the workout? We started with the mosey and warm-up and then I told everyone to run a lap around the parking lot and to remember the order that they finished in.  Of course, Slapshot was the fastest.  Trucker was the 6 today.

Now, the reason we did that was so that the person who was the 6 now became the leader/pacesetter for the rest of the workout.  There are 25 parking spaces per row in the lot.  We started with 1 burpee per spot AND THE CATCH is that you cannot pass the person in front of you.  Then run a lap where you cannot pass the person in front of you.  Next, 2 squats in that same can’t pass the person in front of you method.  Then 3 merkins, 4 knee taps, and finally 5 plank shoulder taps.

So what’s the lesson in doing it this way? For those of us to might lead the pack most of the time, we had to wait.  We had to be patient.  We couldn’t go as fast as we wanted to.

What was your plan for this morning? Did you get the workout you expected? Did you make the most of the time you spent with your brothers?  Were you encouraging?  Are you helping those in front of you?  Are you prepared both mentally and physically for when things don’t go as planned?

I know that I wanted the donation to happen sooner.  It was going to be more convenient for me to do this in December from a work and family perspective.  But God has a plan.  God wants this to happen when he wants it to happen.  Trust in his plan.  Even if his plan is for this to not be successful for Petra (my recipient) then I have to trust that God is using me and this time to try to educate and inspire others.

We’ll be carrying on the good fight as we start a charity/non-profit to help generate awareness, community and to raise funds for kidney research.  The Odd Kidneys Group will be a way for us to foster education and share the inspirational stories that are out there that go untold.  You’d be surprised by the number of HIM’s in the area that are going through this journey or are considering it since I’ve been talking about it at COT’s.

Today is a day for us to take stock of the fortunes that God has bestowed upon us and look for his guidance to share it with others.  I’m thankful that I was EH’d by @Polaroid 18 months ago and that I’m in the best shape of my adult life so that I can give the most precious gift anyone can to another person– more time.  Thank you to all of you for your support, encouraging words, and prayers over the last 5 months.  We are a group like no other and I am beyond grateful for each of you who do the hard things and understand that we GET TO DO THIS.  Keep posting PAX!

Splinter!

Cold fun at the Ridge

Seven HIM earned the ‘frosty’ badge this morning. Seven Snake Pit HIM were disclaimed and sent off with Wegmans.  YHC took the boot campers on a small mosey and a little warm-o-rama. Coming out of the W-O-R, YHC had some cones set up, staggered, where we bunny hopped on the outside of the cones. Moseyed over to the fire loop behind the school for some wall work which included a Derkin/Irkin ladder of 11’s between 2 walls.  Next circle up for 10 squats followed by 10 count Al Gore, then 9 of each, then 8 of each down to 1. Each HIM had the opportunity to make the counts. Mosey over to the bus loop for the posts. Lined up and did some paper rock scissors. Each HIM vs Q. 5 rounds, if you lost, 1 krakken burpee. Tie 1 burpee. Win bear crawl about 10 yards forward.  Round 2 at the second post: same rules but this time 2 krakken or burpee. Round 3 at the third post would be 3 krakken or burpee.  I think Hardwood won.  Head to the ramp. At the bottom were the exercises. After each set, sprint to top of the ramp and mosey back down.  12 days of xmas: we did 12 count of 12 exercises and that’s a wrap.

In memory of 24 / 8

After hearing the news yesterday of the passing via helicopter crash of one of the GOAT’s Kobe Bryant, YHC felt the need to honor him AND the lives of the other 8 individuals with a beatdown full of 8 and 24, his jersey #s.

Standard disclaimer preceded by the following message: Friends, let us not become fearful when confronted with life’s impending expiration. Rather, let us live with a fullness and an intentionality that recognizes the value of each breath given.

Mosey for warm-o-rama:
– At each crosswalk, burpee jump shot (just a regular burpee, but instead of both hands up on the jump, it’s one hand up to drain the 3).  Accumulator burpees at each crosswalk (we did 5 crosswalks to total 21) then circle up for the last 3 = 24 burpee jump shots.
– 24 SSH in cadence
– 12 imperial walkers + 12 hillbilly walkers, in cadence = 24
– 24 single count merkins
– 24 toe touches on the curb

Mosey to distant parking lot and partner up with someone similar in speed. Not your partner, your opponent.  2 cones are 24 parking paces apart.  Partners will start at opposite ends and complete 8’s (similar to 11’s, but #Kobe).  One end is squats, the other end is merkins.  After you complete the first exercise, bear crawl to the other end. Complete that exercise then mosey back. Repeat until you flapjack and complete the 8’s.  That’s right, that’s 7x bear crawl 24 parking spaces.  Doesn’t seem like much?  #try it.  To encourage PAX, YHC reminded them that I’d rather be doing this than losing family members.  Our pain is nothing compared to their pain.

Mosey back to Best Buy wall for 24 seconds BTTW, 24 dips (ouch), and 8 jump shot burpees.  Repeato.  YHC then reminds PAX of a famous quote: we’re not guaranteed tomorrow.  While true, we’re also not guaranteed the rest of today.  So what are we going to do about that?  Hop into plank to go around the circle and mention something they’re grateful for and/or something they’re going to do different TODAY to make an impact.  Unfortunately, 38 felt the need to grace us with his inner smells.  Fairly certain he ate something that was not real food the night before… I digress.

All the yogging

YHC showed up about ten minutes early to mark the path and found that there was a great crowd of PAX gathered and at least 4 running the EC miles.  The disclaimer was disclaimed and no new faces were visible in the gloom, so I announced that the BCs would be going with me… and 10/13 ran away with Gecko.  Did not see that one coming.

The warmup

A very short mosey to the pillars for a light warmup. This involved simple stretching of the hips and firing off a quick 20 SSH.  Then we got right into it.

The Thang

Simple. Run to all the checkpoints… At each checkpoint, do some reps. Then keep going.

Stops:
1. 30 dips – At the SW end of the parent lot
2. 35 LBC – N corner of field (by the tree)
3. 30 plank jacks – By the sidewalk
4. 60s (or so) BTTW – dumpster enclosure
5. 30 CDD – N crosswalk

Three loops were completed with a good deal of mumblechatter between the 3 PAX.  YHC does not believe this means that the workout was “light”. In fact, the ability to carry on a (labored) conversation during heavy cardio workouts has always helped me the most. If I’m gasping for air, I’m not going to hit 3 miles.

At checkpoint four the 3 PAX mounted the wall and took two turns doing a 10 count to try to estimate 60 seconds.  Then, when we got up, everyone got another (silent) 10 count to let the blood seep back into the extremities.   The third time around we counted down from 15 as we were getting close to the end.

Three full sets were completed and we made it to checkpoint 3 in the fourth time around, YHC noticed we had ~5min left and we ran back down the short loop, around to the pillars where the yoggers were yoga-ing for 30 dips. The alarm went off and we quickly moseyed over to COT.

COT

Some good announcements were announced. Decibel is looking for mentors for Children’s Attention Home. If you have the time, or can make it, this is an excellent way to go from PAX to HIM. There are some races coming up. Dam2Dam relay is having a fundraiser at the Baxter Grapevine on January 29th.

Lots of prayers extended. YHC asked for prayers to help him lose the “dad bod” by cutting out the casual pint of beer most evenings with dinner. Lots of hurting family members.  Our troops are in the direct line of fire again.

I’m always very thankful to be asked to Q.
