Suffering in Silence

18 assembled this morning for some bells (6) and #Beyond (12). YHC decided to change things up slightly. We did the Name-a-Rama first. Read on to see why.

NMM

You’ll also note that I’m posting the Naked Man Moleskin before the workout. Sometimes the message is more important than the workout. Today was one of those days. #Beyond is designed to take you out of your comfort zone and push buttons we would rather leave untouched. Today’s discussion was on depression.

Some facts:

  • There are 123 suicides in America every day
  • The highest suicide rate is adult males between the ages of 40 and 54
  • White males accounted for 7 out of every 10 suicides in 2016

These sobering statistics spoke to me because our PAX fit right in the sweet spot of these ranges. The average age this morning was 44 – right in the thick of these numbers. Depression effects men in different ways. This group is sandwiched in between the traditional silent, strong fathers who went to work and provided for their families and the more progressive, open generations of their sons who share parenting duties and aren’t always the breadwinners of the household. Many men never mastered either of these roles and now feel lost. We’ve married capable women who take care of everything from the children to the social agenda, leaving men to feel a void of purpose. Around this age, men look around at their neighbors and ask, “why am I not as successful as my neighbor?” Outside of our homes, we are lonely. We’ve lost track of our college buddies and only connect with our co-workers on a water cooler level. We feel like we haven’t accomplished enough. For all intents and purposes, men in their mid-40s often feel neutered – unable to provide the ways their dads did and unwilling or unprepared to be Mr. Mom to their older children. To make matters worse, a job loss or divorce often leads these men into a downward spiral of addiction and despair. Chances are, you’ve felt this way or know someone who does. It becomes our responsibility to reach out to these men and invite them into a brotherhood of love. Medical professionals recommend a few steps to battle depression. I added number 5:

  1. Seek social support
  2. Support your health (get enough sleep, control stress, and go outside)
  3. Exercise
  4. Eat Healthy
  5. Give your concerns to God

All of these are incorporated into what we do each morning at F3. Social support comes in the form of other men who are battling or have battled this demon themselves. To me, its finding blades and stones to sharpen each other. It’s the second F – Fellowship. Doctors recommend finding outlets to blow off steam, exercising and getting outside. How else better than exercising outside in the elements pushing past pain with your brothers in the Gloom? This is the first F – Fitness. Finally, acknowledging that there is a higher being that loves you and wants what is best for you. Rather than telling God how big your problems are, tell your problem how big your God is. This is the third F – Faith.

I realized that the reason F3 is growing is because it is the answer to the question we never knew we had. It is the antidote to society’s poison of depression. We all struggle, from project managers to pastors. We all battle life. Why not surround yourself with guys who can build the 3 Fs right beside you? Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says it best: “Two are better than one because they have good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, the other can help them up. But pity anyone who falls and has no other to help them up. Also if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Interpret those three strands however you wish. I like to think of them as me, God, and my brothers. That dream team can win any fight. Grab your shield and suit up, we’ve got a battle to wage.

SlowBurn Send-off For Rooney

47 pax of TheFort posted this morning to show support for #HIM Rooney, who is moving to Seattle.  Rooney has not only impacted his brothers in F3, but many of our kids through his tremendous servant leadership as a principal in our school system.  There is no doubt he will be missed here, but that sadness is somewhat offset by the knowledge that he’ll be positively impacting families out west.

In anticipation (accurately) of a large crowd, it was decided the launch point and COT would be the Empire Pizza parking lot behind Chick-fil-a.  CakeBoss opened up with a few words about Rooney, then handed off to YHC.  We started with 25 side straddle hops, then moseyed up around Chick-fil-a (to pick up any twitterless pax that didn’t get the message).  We landed back at a parking lot near our launch point.

Warmup-O-Rama

  • Windmills (10)
  • Hillbilly Walkers (15)
  • CDDs (20)
  • Flutters (20)
  • Chopsticks (20)
  • Seal Jacks (20)

Mosey to parking lot in front of Lowe’s where a few cones had been set-up. Pax asked to partner up and told we’d be doing a Dora 1-2-3.  This was the same exercise Rooney had done during his VQ, which I had the privilege of posting to (was my 3rd post, I believe) at WEP back in November of 2014.  The turn-around point for the running was about 50 yards.

  • 100 Merkins
  • 200 LBCs
  • 300 Squats

After a 10 count, we moseyed to the parking lot on the west side of Lowe’s.  Cones were set up there for some “4 Corners” action.  Each cone had two exercises listed for each round.  Pax were instruction to alternate between the 2 exercises for the appropriate round (to 10 reps of each exercise).  They were told to move to the next cone when the group at the previous cone reached them.  No count-off by 4s done…pax could just pick a cone to be their starting point (lazy pax like YHC took the closest cone). Here were the exercises:

Cone 1
  • Round 1 – Flutters <-> Freddie Mercuries
  • Round 2 – LBCs <-> Heals to Heaven
  • Round 3 – Dying Cockroach <-> American Hammers
  • Round 4 – Chopsticks <-> Plank Jacks
Cone 2
  • Round 1 – Side-step lunges <-> Imperial Walkers
  • Round 2 – Bomb Jacks <-> Lunges
  • Round 3 – Monkey Humpers <-> Squats
  • Round 4 – High Jumps <-> SSH
Cone 3
  • Round 1 – Plank Punches <-> Dips
  • Round 2 – Merkins <-> 10 second Elbow Plank
  • Round 3 – CDD <-> Moroccan Nightclubs
  • Round 4 – Alternating shoulder taps <-> Parkers Peters
Cone 4
  • Round 1 – Box Cutters <-> 10 second Superman
  • Round 2 – Toy Soldiers <-> Speed Skaters
  • Round 3 – Donkey Kicks <-> Peter Parkers
  • Round 4 – Big Boy Sit-ups <-> Inchworm Merkins

We got through 3 rounds before time ran out and we headed back to COT

Naked Man Moleskin

After the workout, a couple dozen men gathered at Chick-fil-a to share with Rooney how he has impacted us (except for Dark Helmet, who served as a one-man roasting machine).  It was beyond evident that Rooney had a deep impact on many men, their kids, and their family, as a brother and a principal.  Rooney is an inspiring individual, and his courage to respond to God calling him across the country will undoubtedly also be an inspiration to those wondering if they should act on words from the Sky-Q.

Rooney, you have been an amazing example of “giving it away” everyday here in Fort Mill.  And now we have to let you give it away to another community (on the west coast, no less!).  But one thing is for sure: the world is a better place because of who you are and what you do.  No man, student, or family is left behind, nor are they left where you find them.  Strong work, brother.  Strong work.

Hopefully Moderate at Slow Burn

It’s great to roll into this AO and see so many new faces. It’s encouraging to know we keep growing. Based on that I tried to do a better disclaimer than my normal. I was also a little nervous since I was doing the Ruckover later in the day as well as trying to hit the right level for moderate. But the weinke was set and of f we went.

Mosey over to first parking lot down road to Shutterfly for normal warm-ups. Nothing new or ground-breaking.

  • Split up into 2 groups for Indian Run down to Eternal Church parking lot. Since we were going downhill last man spring to front.
  • Partner up for Lazy Dora.
    • 100 Merkins (P1 does 10 while P2 hold plank, then keep switching to 100).
    • 200 LBCs (P1 does 20 while P2 does 6″ hold, then keep switching to 200).
    • 300 Squats (P1 does 25 while P2 holds air chair, then keep switching to 300).
  • Assemble at one end of parking lot back in 2 original groups. 1st group starts exercise and 2nd group starts after 1st group gets done with 1st exercise.
    • Run to 1st line – 10 jump lunges: run to 2nd line – 10 thrusters: run to 3rd line – 10 merkins: run to end of lot and then back to beginning
    • Run to 1st line – 10 bomb jacks: run to 2nd line – 10 plank jacks: run to 3rd line – 10 seal jacks: run to end of lot and then back to beginning
    • Lunge walk to 1st line – 10 squats: backward lunge to 2nd line – 10 squats: lunge walk to 3rd line – 10 squats: backward lunge to end
    • Run to 1st line – 10 jump lunges: run to 2nd line – 10 thrusters: run to 3rd line – 10 merkins: run to end of lot
  • Stay in 2 groups for Indian Run back to COT. Since we’re going uphill first guy in line drops for 5 merkins then runs to catch end of line and tell next guy to drop.

The run back was maybe a little more than normal for Slow Burn but everybody made it. Tried to use it as a shameless cross-promotion for PAX to post to Clydesdales. There’s always all runner levels there and a great way to get better at running. Always an honor to lead this group of PAX. Thanks Smither’s for the opportunity!

Hells Bells at The Tomahawk

I realized last week that I hadn’t Q’d a workout in a few weeks and was itching to get back at it.

As always, I try to challenge myself in each workout I lead, but more importantly I try to focus on encouraging others to challenge themselves.

We started out on what was hopefully the last cold morning of the lagging spring, with thermometers readin 39-40 degrees, moseying the Dobys Bridge Elementary School parking lot for some warm-ups.  We circled up with the PAX completing a litany of windmills, imperial walkers, Merkins, hill billy walkers, morroccan night clubs, mountain climbers, and some SSH.  We then grabbed the bells and mosey’d to the bottom of the hill at the entrance to the school, where we “found” some additional tokens (cement blocks and medicine balls).

The thang:

The PAX split into 2 groups of 3 and roughly equally distributed the KB weight. The 1st PAX was the timer and would run with the token to the top of the hill and back, while the other two PAX would complete AMRAP of the prescribed exercise.  Each of the 3 PAX would cycle through running with the token and completing the exercises.  The goal was to challenge yourself by using heavier weight than you normally would.

Exercises: KB swings; squat, curl, and press; KB pull through w/ row; clean and press; squats, curls,  overhead triceps extensions; LBCs w/ KB overhead; Weazy Jeffersons with KB overhead; Lawnmowers; Burpees w/KB.

With a few minutes left, the PAX picked up their KBs and the tokens and mosey’d (more like rucked or farmer carried) back to COT.  This may have actually been the hardest part of the workout – Hells Bells!

Count-o-Rama, Name-o-Rama, Announcements, Prayers/Praises, BoM

Dragon’s Den

This week is a special week as Thursday makes four years since I joined F3 up in Area 51 (south Charlotte) so I was happy to chip in and q again at Tomahawk which is at Doby’s Bridge Elementary, with a school mascot of a dragon.  Small world as my elementary school also had a dragon for a mascot.  Anyway, enough of this on to what we did.

After a pretty standard COP we got the bells a swinging.

25 swings
25 goblet squats
20 merkins
20 tricep extensions
25 LBC’s
30 curls
20 skull crushers
20 calf raises
20 American hammers

After every third exercise, run/walk a lap.  We got through two rounds and I added some core work in there as well just for fun.

I got at least one “I hate you!” from Polaroid or someone sounding like him so I feel like I did my job.

Welcome to Data Breach!  Looks like you guys are busy EHing your friends and neighbors.  Keep it up.  Great work out there DB!

Thanks for the HIMs you guys are and how you encourage me every day.

Peace out.  DT
