New Q…reuse The Tomahawk workout

  • QIC: WhatDid
  • When: 04/10/2017
  • Pax: Sauerkraut, Birdcage, Hat Trick (2.0), Socrates, Patton (2.0), Drop Thrill, Pinup WhatDid (QIC)
  • Posted In: The Snake Pit

YHC showed up to The Tomahawk to find a few HIM already defeating the day and waiting to post for a little kettle bell.  When the digital watch hit 0515, we had 6(…the other 2 will come in).

Now your YHC hasn’t posted to a non-running or non-ruck workout in months and was posting for only the second time since the P200.  Preparing for my Q required dusting off the Qskill set and counting on the pax to support the Q.  I wasn’t disappointed…

But first, let me give a shout out for BACK BLASTS.  To prepare, I looked no further than previous Tomahawk back blast to find some material that I liked.  Fortunately Chicken Wing Qed up a goody a few weeks ago. So if my BB has a little CTRL+C, CTRL+V, the work is cited.

Post a brief disclaimer with no FNG’s present…we moseyed without out our bells..

..towards the back of the school to warm up with some butt kickers, high knees, karaoke left and right, and finished up with some left and right shuffle.

6 of us circled up for some COP warm up…quickly to find 2 catching up from the parking lot. I’m not sure how they found us as the AO was not well lit at this hour. I’m glad they do so they could enjoy…

  • 25 SSH IC
  • 10 Windmills IC
  • 15 seal jacks IC
  • 15 mountain climbers IC
  • 10 merkins IC

With COP done, I thanked Birdcage for keeping the count as the pax where a little voice shy at this point. That quickly changed when we mosied backed to our bells.

The real thing brought the uggs and the ohs out.

Thank you Chicken Wing.  We picked the bells up and mosied down to the starte of the LONG school driveway.  When all were present, the plan was announced.  The 10 poles we passed are our markers.  At each pole we’ll, based on odd or even, we’ll perform the following:

Odd poles – 10 Burpees (w/o KB), 20 KB Swings, 30 KB squats
Even poles – 10 right arm merkins on the bell, 10 left arm merkins on the bell, 10 KB curls each arm, 10 KB shoulder presses each arm
repeato up to pole 10 carrying the KB between the poles.

Now, on paper I thought this was nothing. Little did I know.  We muscled through the first 5 before a 10 count was called out. Thank you birdcage and drop thrill. We then continued to the 9th pole. Patton assisted me in counting the poles and advised me that were pretty much done. Looking at my watch, I agreed but not without having Patton (Socrates 2.0), agree to call out some merry when we get back to COT. He accepted.

Back by COT Patton led us in:

  • V-Ups, in a silly fast cadence count only manageable by a teenager
  • Freddy Mercuries IC
  • Crunches

NMM

  • Pax were awesome today. Greatly appreciate their support as I got back out there and Qed. Couldn’t of done it without you.
  • Great to see the 2.0’s out there. These young men are the future and each time we get to pour a little bit of leadership into them I believe it also fills us up as leaders
  • Theme of the month – Sacrifice. YHC shared a little of his own take on sacrifice.  Simply put, sacrifice starts early in the morning, leaving the comfort of ones better to step out onto the pavement to get better to only prepare our bodies, hearts and minds to live third. To get uncomfortable so that we’re prepared to comfort and support our M’s, 2.0’s, family, friends, co-workers.
  • Socrates and Drop Thrill picked me up on the theme and shared the reminder of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us all. Very fitting as we’re in holy week.
  • Getting better….Pindrop shared with me that even though my work was copied (only partly, BTW) from a few weeks ago, he felt better and stronger today. He wasn’t gased on the burpees even though he was leading the way the entire time. He’s getting ready for a few big races and if I can, I’ll EH him into the 4/28 Go Ruck Tough.
  • Drop Thrill is saying goodbye to 44 and hello to 45 this week. Happy Birthday.

Announcements:

Check up on the newsletter… a lot going on. We don’t want to miss out.

Prayers

  • Marriages, Marriages and Family.
  • WhatDid’s co-worker took her own life. Prayers for her family and three beautiful daughters she left behind.

F3 Rock Hill 3rd Anniversary

F3 Rock Hill 3rd Anniversary Saturday May 6th

This year marks F3 Rock Hill’s 3 year anniversary. Come join us in the celebration of epic comradery and growth.

Comradery is the spirit of friendship and community in a group, like the comradery of soldiers at war who keep each other upbeat despite the difficulty of their circumstances. Who is a comrade? A close friend or a fellow soldier — in other words, someone who comes to mind when you say, “We’re in this together.”

The workout will be lead by the Founders of F3nation Dredd and OBT,  at the the F3 Rock Hill original AO The Patriot.

Followed by a 2nd F breakfast and iron sharpening event at Saint Johns’ UMC. With Dredd and OBT addressing the PAX with a special message on leadership and growth of F3nation.

NOTE: Breakfast will be provided from 0830 til 0900 at Saint Johns UMC. All inclusive.
This will be a great opportunity to meet and sharpen Iron and push the rock with, Dredd, OBT and your brothers. Along with, being able to hear first hand, about what the the future holds for F3nation

Carpool run at LO

  • QIC: Double D
  • When: 04/06/17
  • Pax: MacGyver, Skate or Die, Old Bay, MP
  • Posted In: Laces Out

5 Pax posted to Laces Out expecting some track work.  Whoops….gates were locked.  Had to audible and scout options for speed work.  Amid the confusion YHC fumbled any attempt at a Disclaimer.

The Thang

COP — warm up w/Mtn climbers, IWs, backward lunge, Peter Parkers and Burpees (yes, Burpees at LO!)

Pax grabbed headlamps and were off and running through FMHS parking lots while YHC worked Plan B in his head.  With thoughts of heading to the hill on Harris Street, YHC spied the big island at the front entry of FMHS and decided that would suffice for speedwork laps.

Warm up run continued down to stop light at entrance on Hwy 21 and then back up to the carpool loop.

1 lap around island w/recovery jog for 1/3 of lap after each speed lap (rinse and repeat)
2 laps around island w/recovery jog for 1/3 of lap after each 2-lap interval (rinse and repeat)

Mosey down to stop light at entrance for hill repeats

Run to top of hill near the R Wing w/recovery jog back down to the stop light (repeat 3x more)

Mosey back to stadium lot

2 laps around stadium lot w/recovery jog for 1/2 lap after each interval (rinse and repeat)
1 lap around stadium lot w/recovery jog for 1/2 lap after each interval (rinse and repeat)

COP – stretching and cool down

Triathlon core session — Freddie Mercurys, flutters, Sea turtles

Naked man moleskin

0500 launch is a tough wake up for YHC typically.  Something about Laces Out must be different.  I awoke at 0405 and was alert and ready to roll.  I was happy to see pax at the ready when I arrived.

Locked stadium gates was an unexpected (and unwelcome) development.  Hoping that is not the new normal at LO.  The good thing about LO AO is that there are plenty of good running options if you really  pay attention to the layout.  Pax responded well to the required audible.  Even got some mumble chatter about “Burpees at Laces Out?!”  Also got mumble chatter about it being “too early for BRR training” when the hill repeats were announced.  The pax took it all in stride and gave it their all.  Nice work!  In fact, Skate or Die and MacGyver looked to be in BRR form already!

After many months of nagging hitch in my giddy-up, it was great to be out pushing the pace in an interval workout.  Will be back again soon for more.

Thanks to the pax for the effort and to Sir Topham Hat for the invite.  Always an honor.

Many of us have leaders we follow because they have some quality we like and they are just good at what they do. I follow many leaders, but the one who came from heaven and taught me how to love God and love others and died on a cross so I can have eternal life, Sacrificed the most and is what I find appealing in his leadership.

Men were strong encourage rs today. Great group and strong AO. Love Pantheon!

Double Trouble

  • QIC: Geronimo and Chicken Wing
  • When: 04/03/2017
  • Pax: Sauerkraut, Birdcage, Skate or Die, Pin Up, Clampett, Sugar Bug, Dark Helmet, Cake Boss, Cash Flow, Geronimo, Bounce House, Rocky Top, Airbourne, Cheddah, Rebel, Chicken Wing
  • Posted In: The Snake Pit

16 was the total of HIMs to post at The Tomahawk. What was in store for the brave men unfolded before their eyes throughout the workout. A tag team of Geromino to get the blood flowing and soreness kicked off was followed by YHC with just a few simple exercises that seemed to never end.

We had a pre run arranged by Sauerkraut…I heard today that he is looking to step up as The Fort pre-run Q. He may arrange it, may not, he may post, he may not, but one thing is for certain there will be A LOT of mumblechatter on the topic.

Geronimo takes the helm and leads us in a warm up COP style.

Usual suspects were worked through to get us ready for “The Death Star” not sure if Geronimo named it that, but hence for it so shall be called.

KBs swings in the center and roughly 10 stations around the middle with writing that took me back to a nice bistro. You know all of the fancy chalk trying to sell their wares. Well Geronimo was selling his wares with a KB…very enjoyable. Not exactly!

So the pax broke up, some went clockwise, others not in the same direction which made for a good time. KB pass throughs to the center and overhead KBs to each station.

10 stations or so of varying degrees of difficulty and after a round of the Death Star, it was turned over to YHC.

Pretty simple. Partnered up, catch me if you can with 10 merkins on the catch all the way from the parking lot to Doby’s Bridge. Once at the end, turned around and gathered at the stop sign into the school.

With partners, did 10 KB derkins on each arm while other partner was holding feet on the back in plank. Switchero and repeat.

Mosied to white sign….light to light would have been fun.

KB merkin crawls. What is that you ask? A whole lotta goodness and it a time killer. About 15 yards or merkins on one arm, then cross the bell while crawling to the opposite arm and do a merkin. On and on until you wearily crawled to the light post. I saw a lot of throwing of the bell, or a huge push…210, 220, whatever it takes.

Finish with a catch me if you can to the COT. 2 minutes of mary.

COT.

Prayers and announcements.

Thanks for the Q men and always great to share the Q. Let me know if you want on the schedule and we will add you on.

We have What Did on Q this upcoming Monday for his KB VQ. Doctors have cleared him and we will support his return to action.

No Mumble Chatter Day

  • QIC: Mainframe & Maximus
  • When: 04/01/17
  • Pax: Knuckelball, Smuggler, On the Rocks, Bob the Builder, Falcon Crest, Crash, Cable Guy, Senator Tressel, Culture Club, Lil E, Sparkplug, Fishsticks, Mainframe, Maximus
  • Posted In: Alcatraz

It was a perfect morning for some pain at Alcatraz. Pulled in the parking lot and it was great mix of PAX. With the disclaimer butchered as usual, we were off.

Warm up: Jog on street in front of parking lot down a ways and back. Circle up for SSHs, Hillbilly Squaters, Mtn Climbers, Peter Parkers, Parker Peters, and some MNCs.

3 cones set up in parking lot. Start with suicides. To middle cone and back, to far cone and back, to middle cone and back. Next was the jack ladder. Plank jacks, bomb jacks, and seal jacks. 1st cone=5 plank jacks run to middle cone, 5 bomb jacks, run to far cone for 20 seal jacks. Run back to 1st cone and repeat except go up 5 at 1st cone and down 5 at 3rd cone. So 5:5:20, 10:5:15, 15:5:10, & 20:5:5. Another round of suicides. Another ladder with the same count as above except with CDDs, burpees in middle, and merkins. One more round of suicides to give PAX time for arms to recover.

Time for the closer. Maximus had us mosey over to the playground and split up. Group 1 does 10 pull-ups while group 2 does dips. Flip it, then repeat it again. Mosey to snack stand wall for people’s chair. Stay in the chair until all PAX do 5 count. Shake out legs as we go to outfield. Circle up for Lt Dan’s circuit (1 squat & 4 jumping lunges increasing up to 10:40). Real crowd pleaser. On our 6’s for some ab stuff: box cutters, American hammers, flutters, & toe touches. Duck walk from warning track to the infield. Mosey to the wall behind the backstop on the far baseball field. 15 step ups each leg then 20 dips. Mosey back to the main field and circle up. Each PAX hold the squat position while one by one each PAX does 2 burpees. A few more ab exercises and then another round of the 2 burpee circle.

COT. Great work by all the PAX and great to have Bob the Builder join us for the last few exercises in his fireman clothes. Not sure if he finished his shift or just figured he’d hear any alarm from that close. It was a quiet group of PAX today. Not sure if that was b/c of Senator Tressel’s edict or everyone was tired. But it was an honor to lead today with Maximus.

Logging out,

Mainframe

Yay Tuesday!  Amiright?

This morning was an exercise for the OCR. Mainly Burpees cause lets face it, thats what we’ll be doing at some point.

Warmup: SSH, Windmill, Hillbilly’s, Slow Merkins (Slurkins?)

The Thang:

Mosey over to half wall for details.  Exercise, on command of “Right” – arms locked with right foot on wall, “Down” – chest resting on top of wall, “Left” – arms locked with left foot on top of wall

10 sets of Right, Down, Left, Down –  then 1 min wall sit + 10 count
10 sets of Right, Down, Left, Down – then 1 min wall sit + 20 little baby arm circles
10 sets of Right, Down, Left, Down – then 1 min wall sit + 30 air presses

Next mosey to front of Elementary for a Dora (you and partner finish cumulative exercises while one partner is always running)

100 Burpees, 200 Merkins, 300 Squats

A burpee is physically (as in physics) the most work (force * distance) you can do.  So doing burpees followed by running is always a test of the system.

I never said this is the hardest workout ever.  I simply stated that if you made it through, you can do just about any boot camp.  You should now get a 35lb kettlebell and join me on Friday at the Hive.

Moleskin

Always feel fortunate to lead.  Thanks to Ginsu for his words.  Till next time brothers.

Act I – DaVinci Cones: Merkin Mile Edition

When 7 a.m. rolled around and the workout was properly disclaimed, we moseyed around the parking lot and across the street to the front of the school for a little Circle Of Pain:

  • SSH x 20
  • Moroccan Nightclubs x 20
  • Windmills (NICE N SLOW for the Q)
  • Low, Slow Squats x 20
  • Merkins x 10 (DC)
  • Hold, Downward Dog and Honeymooner to stretch (for the Q)
  • Peter Parkers x 10 (DC) – repeat stretches
  • Freddy Mercurys x 10

Then we moseyed to the incredible track for the Merkin-in-in Mile-ile-ile…

Pretty simple “set-it-and-forget-it” workout for which I am notorious:

I set out two lil cones on opposite sides of the ¼-mile track.

  • First lap: 10 merkins at each cone
  • Second lap: 7 merkins at each cone
  • Third lap: 5 merkins at each cone
  • Fourth lap: 3 merkins at each cone

Then it was time to hand it off to my friend Royale.

Act II – Royale’s Merkins and BLIMPS

“Merkin Mania” at the playground

  • 20 Swing set Derkins / 20 Swing set Crunches
  • 20 Hand-release Merkins / 20 Plank Jacks
  • 20 Ranger Merkins / 20 shoulder Taps
  • 20 Wide-arm Merkins / 1 minute Elbow Plank

Mosey back across the street to Oakridge for BLIMPS

  • 5 Burpees
  • 10 Lunges
  • 15 Imperial Walkers
  • Blanked on the “M” and the PAX graciously called Merkins, so we did 20
  • 25 Plank Jacks
  • 30 Squats

We finished this so a quick lap in the parking lot.  Rinse and repeated with M becoming Mountain Climbers.

Finished a hard hour of work with some stretching…

Royale spoke from the heart for a few moments about what it means to be a part of F3, framing his talk by highlighting each of the Three Fs. While I don’t remember his exact words, I hope I’ve captured the essence. And since we co-Q’d this one, I offer my take as well.

Of course we all know the First F: Fitness. It’s the Magnet. It’s what got us out at 0-Dark-15 to begin with. We all know the importance of moving our bodies and keeping ourselves strong physically as we get older. But as Royale reminded us, that’s just the beginning.

The Second F of Fellowship is the Glue that keeps us coming out in the cold, the rain — even the remains of a hurricane as it passed over the QC. It’s the Shield Lock with our Brothers in Arms. It’s a community of like-minded men who are there to pull us and push us and catch us and lift us. At the very least, it is a group of friendlies to sweat along side of; at its deepest, it is finding brothers from other mothers. It is what you bring with you and what you make of it.

But it’s the Third F that can be truly transformative. It’s what’s described as the Dynamite in Freed to Lead * by F3 founders OBT and Dredd. We all have heard or read the mission of F3: “…To plant, grow and serve small workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership.” I’ll admit that when I first began posting nearly a year ago, I wasn’t quite sure what that meant, or how burpees and bearcrawls were connected to leadership.

And then I Q-ed my first workout. I was scared, but I wanted to push myself to do something that scared me.

And then I was talking to Vinny one morning about getting a group of us together for a beer. So we started a happy hour which I Q the second Tuesday of each month.

And then I found myself on a diversity and community outreach committee, which organized a turkey giveaway before Thanksgiving, and an Easter Party just last weekend.

And suddenly, I saw the connection: When you have your life priorities in the right order, and when you seek, find and acknowledge a power greater than yourself, you feel compelled to do something to affect change in your sphere of influence. I see it all around me in F3 with men donating time talent and treasure to a greater good. Children’s Attention Home. Operation: Sweet Tooth. Mission trips to Colombia. The list goes and grows with each passing month.

Thanks, Royale for the opportunity to Q with you, brother. The Deep is where I first posted, and that A.O. and the PAX who post there mean a lot to me.

Honored to serve. ~ DaVinci
