Special Appearance by Thin Mint and Some SOB’s at The Coop!

Moleskin
YHC tried not to get lost or to faceplant as we moseyed up towards the band practice lot. Nation Ford HS is pretty dark first thing in the morning. I tried to take out Photo Bomb twice by making unannounced sharp turns, but he was too quick on his feet so we warmed up instead. Thankfully the lights came on in the parking lot for the partner suicides or things could have gotten ugly. Have only visited this AO twice (last week and this week), but I can confirm that everyone comes to work hard. Heard your typical mumblechatter this morning, especially on the call for double merkin burpees, but saw every man in attendance pushing hard and getting uncomfortable. Dark Helmet summed things up pretty nicely before the workout when he stated that he knows he CAN modify, but then he looks around at everyone else pushing through and would rather puke today than let up. Beauty of F3 right there. Don’t get me wrong – modify to avoid injury, but not to avoid discomfort. On the other side of uncomfortable things is where each and every one of us finds a better version of ourselves. It’s obvious when you say it (get outside your comfort zone, duh) — but it’s far too easy to forget in the moment. The more we can learn to embrace uncomfortable situations in the gloom with a push from our brothers the more we will find ourselves embracing (or even running headlong at) the everyday discomforts (making that call, having that talk with your M, punishing your 2.0 even when they make the puppy dog eyes) that threaten to force us all into complacency. Or, maybe Dark Helmet was just regretting his choice of a Gordita Supreme at Taco Bell last night. Really enjoyed working out with the men of The Fort this morning and getting pushed by some new faces (especially Backdraft who is one sneaky fast dude). Thanks to Haggis, Fahvra and Fallout for leaving their usual routines to come out to The Coop. Haggis is soon to be a Springfield resident so keep an eye out for him at an AO near you (if he can drag himself off the trails of Anne Springs that is). Very much appreciate the invite from Sugar Bug to lead. YHC definitely plans to visit more often.

The Hive 2017.36

It was a pleasant morning with a familiar faces.  Being somewhat of an introvert, it warms my heart and comforts my thoughts to see familiar faces.  New people scare me (AKA stranger danger).  Anyway…

Warmup
SSH,  Hillbilly Walkers x50 (never really took this one all the way to falure, but you really feel it in your hips)

Thang
Ab exercise, shoulder exercise, ab exercise, should exercise, ab… er, you get it.
First ab movement: While on 6 place partners bell by one side, place your bell on the other.  Do a big boy situp and pick your bell up and lift it over your partners bell, big boy situp and put it back. x10 (like a harder Capt Thor)
Shoulder: Handstand Pushups x10
Abs: Same movement with partners bell on opposite side
Shoulder: B2W shoulder taps x10
Abs: Russian Twist x20
Shoulders: B2W (4×10 count)
Abs: Freddy Mercs w/ bell x20
Shoulders: B2W (3×10 count)

Next round
A “sally” workout: UP – bell overhead, DOWN – bell held out straight
(This one burns so bad… if you can do the whole thing, get a bigger bell)

Final round
Snatch x10 each arm, Squats x10, Repeat
Military Press x10 each arm, Flutters x30

And that’s the game.  Prayers for the guys going to Colombia (but they found a new call).

This Just In: Injured PAX deliver Epic Beatdown (at The Fort)

It’s exciting!  Something about Qing The Fort is just exciting. It was YHC’s (Zima) first post almost 4 years ago. It was my first VQ warmup (w/ CSPAN and Audit..no pressure). And it’s the perfect location to bring guys from all sides of town together..to sweat…to sharpen…to get better.

Disclaimer: Sasquatch has been on the IR with an achilles injury. Zima has been on the IR with a rotator cuff injury. Chances are you might not get your money’s worth. If you wanted to get a good beatdown go to Alcatraz. If you wanted to play soccer go to the Deep.

However, Sasquatch and YHC don’t let something like this get in the way. We embrace it and work around it. We conspired to deliver a beatdown that ensured afternoon naps.

THANG

    • Position 1 – Toes to Bar (or knees to chest) X8
    • Position 2 – Freddy Mercury’s
    • Position 3 – Merkins

Zima on Q

Mosey to the base of the cones for some Dora 3-2-1 (Reverse Dora). Partner Up! One partner runs (50 yds out and back) while the other completes the exercise.

  • 300 Flutters (2-Count)
  • 200 Mtn Climbers (2-Count)
  • 100 Bombjacks (say what?)

Mosey to statue hill for Quadzilla (see: Quadraphilia in the #lexicon). YHC sets timer for 4 (actually 5) minutes and PAX run uphill backwards and downhill forwards until time called. It’s a quad killer.

Mosey back to the cones for…

Suicides; however you need to do the following exercise at the beginning and then every time you reach the “baseline”.

  • Series 1 – 5 Flying Squirrels
  • Series 2 – 5 Tuck Jumps
  • Series 3 – 10 Monkey Humpers

With just a few minutes left we finished with SSH IC X25 and then American Hammers IC X20 or 25 (Can’t remember). Clean up the cones and mosey to the parking lot for COT.

Moleskin

It’s frustrating having an injury. We should do well to lift up the many PAX dealing with injuries, because it can drive a #HIM crazy.  Fortunately for Sasquatch and YHC, we can modify and work around what ails us. For others it might not be as easy or the injury may be too severe. All this to say if you know a PAX in this predicament, shoot them an uplifting text, give them a call or meet them for lunch.

Tclaps to all the PAX who put in the work this AM. There was a lot of meat in today’s workout and we tried to keep things moving at all times (see: move with a purpose). It seemed we needed to push a little harder this AM to let the other (Paid) workout folks (about 20 of them) at WEP know this wasn’t your ordinary workout. These were guys getting after it and leaving it all out on the field. That and it’s always fun to chase Longshanks. One day man…one day.  Here are the rest of my notes.

  • Thanks to Anchorman for the cones
  • It’s amazing that Crabcakes can pull an Elvis without anyone knowing #promove
  • Tclaps to Spiderman for running 8 miles and then joining the workout
  • It’s always fun to workout with Longshanks and Dark Helmet. Uncomfortable, but fun!
  • Wegmans really needs to share his shaving technique with his brother (Sasquatch), nah we probably wouldn’t recognize him then.
  • Great to see so many familiar faces and some new ones. I need to get over here more often.
  • Quadzilla is still a favorite of mine and the PAX still hate it. Yay!
  • Thanks for putting up with us and allowing us to lead

Prayers and Praises

  • Lots of prayers for injured PAX
  • Prayers for families experiencing strife
  • Praise and prayers for several 2.0s on the way
  • Prayers and for teachers
  • Praise and Prayers for 2.0s and families back to school

Announcements

  • Lot of marketing for Qs next week
  • Nun Run – get it on the calendar (see newsletter) and run with SPEED FOR NEED
  • Read your newsletter

Always an Honor!

The Hive 2017.32

Quick and dirty backblast:

Warmup: SSHs, IWs, Merkins

The Thang:
Mosey to the drag strip patio for decent concrete and good lighting (it’s also better for acoustics  😛 )

2223 – inspired by the CrossFit games this is 4 intervals, three 2 minute intervals with 1 minute rest and a 3 minute interval to end it.  So each interval is 20 Jump Squats, 60 Freddy Mercuries (single count), AMRAP KB Snatches (alternate arms)

This is a real burner.  Its only 12 minutes but I definitely had to rest and then mosey and then rest some more.

Next was 3 rounds of 4 count Russian Twists x20 and B2W Shoulder Taps x10

Finished it with some abs and 10 KB burpees.

Choose Discipline and BRR

It was a steamy morning at WEP, but that didn’t discourage Last Call during his VQ nor did it scare off any pax from supporting him.   A lively and energetic group of 23 pax posted to honor and encourage him.

Santini had EH’d FNG/Wazowski (aka Ernie Bhend) so a full fledged disclaimer was pronounced and the baton was handed to Last Call to launch.

The Thang

Last Call took the pax on a warm up lap of WEP, then circled the pax up in the grass near the parking lot (YES, the grass!  What a bold move for a VQ!)

Mosey to the grassy area near the statues at the bottom of the hill & plank it up for commentary about Blue Ridge Relay.  (Yes, it is a shame that The Fort has no teams competing this year in BRR.  Thus, the next 30 mins of the workout became BRR-lite)

Run to top of hill almost to gazebo + 5 Burpees + run back down
Rinse + repeat for 5 total rounds

Mosey to pathway heading out the back of the parking lot & regroup with partner
Partner 1: Run down hill, up other side to trail intersection and back

Solid VQ effort by Last Call today — well done, brother!  Welcome to the club and find a way back into the center of the circle somewhere ASAP so you can hone the skills and expand the experience.

Welcome to FNG/Wazowski (yes, he’s an eye doc)!  You had the privilege (and pain) of enduring a tough workout on a particularly swampy morning — great job making it through to the finish today!  A little merlot splash proves just how far you can push when challenged by other like-minded men.  You’ve found a home here in The Fort for sure.  Look forward to seeing you back in the gloom soon!

T-claps to all the pax for the support of Last Call and Wazowski today.  Special recognition to Santini for EH of Wazowski and Sir Topham Hat for EH of Last Call two months ago.  Also kudos to Peabody, Longshanks and others sweeping the six.

Welcome back home to Ginsu!  Great to have you back in the gloom with your brothers.  Look forward to hearing more about the China experience and your expanded family.

Did I mention the weather was warm and humid today?

That was a tough outing today – great work by everyone pushing through!

In the absence of any BRR activities in The Fort this year, I felt compelled to bring that experience home.  It is an incredible event, and I am disappointed we won’t have any teams to represent The Fort this year.  I know Rooney is running with Dredd & OBT on a 6-man team — way to represent us, brother!  The hills and the pain and the sweat today were all reflective of the reality of what it is to run the BRR – but only the smallest taste of the joy of that event was gained today.  Please consider BRR in 2018 – you won’t regret it.

The message throughout today’s workout revolved around the monthly theme of Discipline.  When I saw Chicken Hawk’s message at the start of the month, I was immediately disturbed.  The word brings about uncomfortable feelings for me related to punishment, reprimands and admonishment from parents, teachers and bosses.  Discipline is something I experience as being imposed on me by someone else, which I never receive well.  I quietly thought maybe I would check out on the theme for August.

Then, on a business trip this week I made some poor choices around web surfing in the lonely isolation of a hotel room.  My re-entry back home included a volatile interaction with the M around my indulgence in a personal vice.  BOOM!  Discipline (or my lack of it) suddenly hit me between the eyes.  It became very real very quickly…clearly this is the right theme for me this month.

I have much to learn still around Discipline.  Santini mentioned during the workout and in a long conversation afterward that the root of the word Discipline relates to “learning.”  The learning I’ve gained in the past few days has come through dwelling on my word for 2017 — CHOOSE —  in the context of Discipline.  In this frame of mind, I am beginning to see Discipline as part of my pathway from where I am currently to the future I CHOOSE to pursue.  In this way, Discipline becomes part of the learning process of how I move toward the fuller, holier life I long for…because I CHOOSE to seek that future point, NOT because someone else is imposing anything on me.

Thanks to Bonsai for putting me on the calendar and for looping in Last Call for the VQ.  We missed you today.

Thanks to all who posted and endured today’s workout.  Your presence, effort, resilience, encouragement and support inspire me!

Once again, ya never know with Straight Up!

Qing is Fun!

Straight Up! at the Ranch hangin’ with ya. Below is the fun we had!

I missed a 6-29 Q date due to injury so I did a throwback to June 2017 where our theme was Faith.

  1. Disclosure mentioned
    1. No FNGs
    2. Theme: Faith
    3. First thought on faith today:
      1. “It is never a question with any of us of faith or no faith; the question is always in what or whom do we put our faith.” – Author unknown.
    4. A head’s up that we will have partners today and teams
      1. Find a partner of (hopeful) equal athletic ability
    5. During warmup, asked partner:
      1. What do you do?
      2. If you were not working, how would you prefer to spend your time?
    6. Divided all partner groups up into 2 teams: Team Trust and Team Faith

II. Groups – 2 lines

Mosey around close circle with some high knees, side shuffles, figure 8s, toy soldiers.

Butt kickers

Backwards run to end of circle

High knees up the next (smaller) hill

Wall games:

How many can you do? (pushing your partner)

2. Single leg wall squat each leg for max time; (challenge your partner)!

3. Partner’s People Chair (Partner squats-you are not using a wall but the back of your partner); hold for 45 seconds

“The issue of faith is not so much whether we believe in God, but whether we believe the God we believe in.” R.C Sproul

2 group lines mosey together to hop-scotch squares doing high knees:

Hop-scotch games: (While you are waiting for your turn 1/2 SSHs. After you finish your challenge, move out of the way and do 1/2 SSHs or towel hop until your partner is finished).

Key question: Will you challenge your partner?

  1. Broad jump to the end race
  2. Non-dominant 1 legged hop back race
  3. Race: Backward bear crawl for one block, then high knee and high arm backward run, then backward bear crawl, then backward run, rotating until completed

  3. Sprint #2 to soccer field goal area closer to our parked cars
  4. Did SSHs as we waited for everyone else

Field Work:

Team Trust: passed the 30 lb kettle bell alternating sides twisting to pass it to your teammate behind you. Run to the back of the line when you finish your turn. Each person has to do it 2X. Do Squats while you are waiting in line.

Team Faith: Kick-thru burpees until Team Trust was done.

Once Team Trust was finished: immediate switch

OYO max set Clerkins

Mosey to COT

III. COT

A. I encouraged the PAX to have faith in something to build your character. Explained a bit about my faith.

A man is what he believes.

As we reflect back on what we may have learned last month in our journey in understanding Faith better or increasing our faith, I pray that God has blessed you in your own adventure.

B. Announcements

    1. Whetstone – consider getting involved;
    2. Praises – we are blessed.
    3. Prayer requests.
    4. From Brigid of Gael:

I arise today

Through a mighty strength:

God’s power to guide me,

God’s might to uphold me,

God’s eyes to watch over me;

God’s ear to hear me,

God’s word to give me speech,

God’s hand to guard me,

God’s way to lie before me,

God’s shield to shelter me,

God’s host to secure me.

Lord, we thank you that for all who call on You in true faith, earnestly from the heart, will certainly be heard, and will receive what they have asked and desired. Amen.

13 HIM stepped onto the Pain Train YHC and Repeat were delivering in the gloom. With no FNG’s present, a quick disclaimer was given.  The thang….

Mosey over to the front of the middle school and the flag poll for COP.

  • 25 SSH IC
  • 15 Windmills IC
  • 3.5 Imperial Walker Squats IC? This was a bad idea. YHC should have practiced the cadence count on this more prior to breaking it out.  After intense mumble chatter…an audible was called
  •  15 Imperial Walker IC
  • 10 Merkins IC10 Mountain Climbers IC

Post the COP, we took advantage of the hill in the driveway.  Start on the right side of the hill….

  • 25 Merkins OYO
  • Run backwards up the hill to the center & flag poll
  • 50 LBC OYO
  • Run down the other side of the hill
  • 50 squats
  • Run backwards up the hill to the center & flag poll
  • 50 LBC OYO
  • Run down the other side of the hill
  • 20 Merkins OYO
  • **Repeat until we we’re down to 15 merks

***plan was to finish this, but I wanted to hand it over to Repeat (Bad Option)

Repeats Train

Focus was on accountability, one man holding another man accountable, and doing the exercises fully and properly. We partnered up (size didn’t matter).

  • 10 Squats
  • 10 Flutters
  • 10 Burpees

When you and your partner were done, mosey to the next light pole and repeat. When done again, mosey to the next light pole. Continue until the time ran out (felt like forever).

NMM

Not much to add here, but Backdraft did comment that by having WWL at his site that he must have a major announcement.  Maybe similar to his post 7 months ago to let us know that he was expecting his first child.  Well, no major announcement.  Mom and baby are doing well and life will change in 2 months.

Thanks for the honor to lead this fine group of HIMs.

Mid-term Exam @ the Coop

23 Men arrived with lots of chatter and welcome to FNG “Horse Shoe” and the EH by Couter inviting the intern out.  It was a beautiful day at the Coop for a Mid-Term Exam to remind ourselves of the word that we chose at the beginning of the year and to challenge our selves to finish strong.

For those that chose a word at the beginning of the year… how is it going?  What have you learned? How are you approaching life differently?

For me… My word is Wisdom and I struggle for perspective and often lose my way and need to be anchor and guided.  The verse that has been shown to me to help is below:

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. – Ephesians 5:21

The Thang:
