Lake Wylie Q-School 101

Class is session with YHC at the helm for Q School 101 in Lake Wylie. Today’s Lesson Plan: Disclaimer, 5 Core Principles, Counting Cadence, Scouting an AO and a little bit of pain.

Starting promptly at 0515 we dropped to plank to discuss some Q basics: Make sure someone has a phone and knows the general area. Brief discussion of F3 Roundtable call with PAX from F3 Houston. If you haven’t listened to it, do it. Just not on the way to work or around people that would judge you for crying. Next up the Disclaimer. One often missed part of the disclaimer is asking about existing injuries, which coincides with knowing what injuries or medical issues PAX may have and if any PAX are CPR or Medically Trained.

Mosey to the back parking lot of the school for COP, counting cadence, and the 5 core principles. PAX were much happier with this COP than my previous Q.

Mosey back around to the front of school for a lunge walk across the parking lot while discussing ways and tools for scouting an AO. Google Maps, Backblasts, drive-bys, and previous posts were mentioned.

Continue to mosey over to the start of the “dirt” path for one of my favorite partner evolutions, Bear Crawl Catch Me if You Can. This is was the pain portion of the morning. Partner 1 starts to Bear Crawl while Partner 2 drops for 3 Burpees and then runs to catch Partner 1. YHC quickly learned that this is not a dirt path, but one covered with glass like shards of rock.

Quick 10 Count to let PAX catch wind

Mosey towards COT for a modified DORA with 50 Prison Cell Burpees, 100 Squats, 150 4 count flutters. Admittedly YHC was a little over ambitious and we only made through the Burpees before the bell rang at 0600 for us to go to our next class.

Quick discussion about elements of a COT: Count-a-rama, Name-o-rama, Announcements, Shout-Out / Words of Wisdom. Followed by COT

Announcements: The Sweati on 7/20, Bones Q at The Deep 7/20, Royale has Q School 201 on 7/19.
Prayers / Praises: Capt Jack daughter with strep, FiA Launch, Ms, 2.0s

Until Next Time, Wild Thing out.

The Return of Austin Powers

5 Brave PAX descended on the PoopDeck for the first of YHC’s back to back Q’s. Austin Powers was a welcome sight, not sure if there was more time between the movie sequels or his posts. Here’s how we got after it:

Warmup dedicated to Lake Wylie OG Witch Hunt. 1 Exercise followed by Burpees starting with 10 and ending with 1. Newer Lake Wylie Pax were not familiar with this type of COP.

Mosey the “hill” next to Sherwin Williams for 11s with squats at the bottom and merkins up top. NUR up the hill, run downhill.

Mosey to the boat launch parking for a set of ladders using the light polls as our markers.

Mosey to the Memorial by Papa Docs where we bear crawled the circle and finished with 17 Erkins, 17 Derkins, and 17 step ups.

Mosey back for COT

Until tomorrow, Wild Thing out!

The Never Ending Mile – Ranch

Workout was performed on the quarter mile loop in front of the Springfield Middle School drop off loop.  Many pax attempted to finish the mile, but no one was able to within the time allotted.

This is a very tough workout and will challenge to you push yourself.  If you plan to use this I suggest you plan for a full hour or no warm-up.

TIREsome fun at Golden Corral

Gave disclaimer a few minutes early even though Dark Helmet tried to delay the start.

Moseyed over to O ‘Riley’s Auto Parts for the warm up:
SSH
Wind mill
Honeymooner / Downward Dog
Hand release merkins
More Honeymooner / Downward Dog
Mountain Climber
Even more Honeymooner / Downward Dog
LBCs

Then moved to the hill behind Quick Lube
Sprint to top of hill and jog back down
20 LBCs at bottom (repeat 4 times)

Next Pax ventured over to the field adjacent the Gold Hill YMCA.  Every time I drive by this area I am always intrigued by the tires that are sitting out there and no one seems to use them.  So I decided that we would put them to use.  Honestly I wasn’t expecting 15 guys to show up so I had to improvise on what to do until I could come up with something worse.

– had Pax split up in 4 groups (3 tires – 1 big tractor tire and 2 large truck tires)

– 3 Teams took turn rolling the tire down to the other end of the field and back will team 4 did merkins until the teams with the tires got to the end of the field and then squats until the teams returned.

– Team 4 took its turn with the tractor tire and other 3 teams did the merkins and squats

After that I came up with the bad idea that we would all line up in two lines shoulder to shoulder and lift the tractor tire overhead and pass it down the line.  Once it passed by you move to the end of the line.  We kept this going for about 30 + yards before someone almost dropped it on their head.

To finish out the workout we partnered up for a DORA
100 Burpees
200 merkins
300 squats

Needless to say doing a DORA like this at the end of the workout is a smoker.  Everyone was able to finish the merkins and then it was time to head back for COT where we arrived a few minutes early and knocked out about half the squats and a round of Mary.

It was an honor to lead and I appreciate the Pax patience as I adlibbed some of the workout trying to account for numbers.

Workday at the Charlotte Ave. YMCA

  • QIC: Reborn
  • When: 08/10/2019
  • Posted In: Pre-Blast

Brothers, those of us in the Rock and Fort Regions who took that opportunity to obtain our First Aid Training a couple of months back are exchanging time and talent to assist in the payment for the training and certification.

We are going to be doing this on Saturday, August 10 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Charlotte Ave. YMCA. We are looking at this as a way for all of the PAX in the region to make an IMPACT in our community by leading. This is open to all M’s and 2.0’s as well if they are willing and able.

If you are available any time during that period (1 Hr. through 4), please contact YHC or just show up that day. This will be a great time of Fellowship and character building for all of us. #Living3rd

Again, August 10 from 0900-1300.

Hope you can make it.

Aye!

10 Lanes of Pain

It’s been a rough week for YHC. Each day leading up to this Q has been met by sleeping through the alarm.  So no less than 3 alarms were set to get out of the fart sack this morning.  Only to be woken up by the M telling me to turn off my alarm…

8 gloom warriors appeared in this morning at the Abyss.  There was a small disclaimer on how unprofessional the Q may be, and the fact that all liabilities are waved like so many cell phone screens at a Weird Al concert (I would know, I was there).

A quick mosey to the back parking lot for a very brief warmup.  SSH and some windmills to get the blood moving.  We then moved over to the bus lanes, where most of the workout would focus.  We were about to start The Thang, but with only 8, I wanted to work in the shaolin exercise “Doji”.  (I probably spell it wrong, I never knew how to spell it in the first place).

The Doji is a series of six shaolin exercises meant to work the legs (I can only concretely remember only four).  It’s 30% leg work, 15% foot work, 5% arms, and 50% balance.  We performed only the first of the series.

Doji 1:

  1. Start by standing facing your direction and plant your right foot (by stomping) 90° from your body.
  2. The left leg steps out into a deep forward stance (a lunge, but the back leg is striaght).
  3. Using your left arm (which is in front) using crane (not explained today) overhead scoop behind your body while shifting your body weight to the right leg, straightening the left.
  4.  As your left arm swings down to the ground.  Shift your weight back onto the left
  5. Step forward with the right foot (don’t come up) and use an open palm strike (demonstrated but not explained today)
  6. Shift your weight forward onto the right.
  7. Repeat L and R until you reach the end.  Turn around and go back to beginning

I knew this was very new to everyone, and that it would likely feel awkward.  The PAX followed along very well when I remembered to call movements on time.  YHC was pleased to see everyone participate and keep from letting their bodies rise up.

The Thang!

10 lanes. 10 pains.  Each lane had transportation exercises labeled in chalk (some doubles).  The labels represented a list, not the direction for whomever was in the lane.  PAX lined up (two to a lane) and everyone did the first exercise until they reached the end of the bus parking lane.

When complete, jog to the far end of the lot, turn left and follow the track back to the same spot.  Everyone stayed together and waited patiently for their now humbled Q to catch up after each run. When we completed four exercises we shifted four spots so that we were always standing on something being called.  Here is the list of exercises.

The lanes
1. Dragon Walk
2. Broad Jump
3. Lunge Walk
4. Bear Crawl
5. Crab Walk
6. Dragon Walk
7. Broad Jump
8. Lunge Walk
9. Crawl Bear
10. Burpee Broad Jump

In all the PAX were able to accomplish the first 10 lanes and another 7 before it was time to mosey back to COT.  YHC was in last place during most of the runs and needed a couple ten counts to drop my HR.  I’m still proud of my performance compared to last year.

Mosey back to COT for 70seconds of Mary.  Most people were showing around 3 miles on their wrist gadgets when it was over.  I’m not going to lie, I thought I was going splash merlot every time I saw that diaper sitting under the middle basketball hoop.  I kept thinking “Have I made remark about how this diaper seems to be in the middle of each lap?  I think I have… or am I too tired to talk and just think I said it?” Well, I certainly forgot my age again at the end of name-o-rama, so it’s entirely possible I said nothing.

YHC is truly honored to get to Q at the Abyss.  There were announcements and prayers at the end.

Pantheon – 5 at 5

5 PAX took the DRP and came to Pantheon for a 3rd Q in 5 days from YHC.  It was a hot and humid morning, who would have thought that of Tega Cay in July?  Needless to say, YHC brought a Weinke and a speaker.  That’s all that is needed.  And we’re off….

The Thang

Big Lap around parking lot to COP

Mosey to WalMart Way, bottom of the hill.  Hill repeats with 5 Flying Squirrels at top and 10 Squats at bottom.  Rinse and repeat X 3.

Mosey back to Shovel Flag.  Turn on the tunes and get ready for the 10 minutes of burpees.  6 burpees in 1 minute X 10 sets.  Crowd pleaser.

Mosey to the Pillars.  Wall sits while one PAX sprints to end of sidewalk and back.

COT – Prayers for travels, returns, in route babies, patience for parents with kids during summer break, prayers for stop being an asshole to the M (that’s mine).

Partner Up

5 Muscle Ups

Partner does Merkins AMRAP

Rotate through 6 rounds. Those muscle ups got sketchy towards 25-30…

Next we planked in the front parking lot to Review the 5 Cs of Virtuous Leadership that we went over in Q Source Saturday.

The universal Essentials for a Shared Leadership Team’s (SLT) F3’s Leadership Virtues:

  • Candor: graciously telling the hard Truth and demanding to hear it from others
  • Commitment: unwavering loyalty to the Group and unflinching determination to accomplish its Mission
  • Consistency: to be unchanging in nature, Standard or effect over time
  • Contentment: stability of emotion engendered by the Consistent pursuit of Joy rather than Happiness
  • Courage: setting aside fear to turn hardship into grace

Hopefully, not much needs to be said in explanation of why the Leadership Virtues are Essential to every SLT. Just imagine trying to share Leadership with a man who does not tell the Truth, is constantly changing his Standards or is emotionally unstable. It simply cannot be done.

Mosey to back of school
