F3 The Fort – Adopt a Highway (#2)

****March 5th 2022- 7:45am – 8:00am****

Men,

We have officially signed up for the Adopt-A-Highway Litter pick-up program.  Our adopted Highway is US21 from Peachstand south to Sutton Rd. (2 miles). We will have a sign installed to promote this section of the highway.  We are encouraged to complete 4 pick-ups a year (once a quarter).  All supplies will be provided.  All we need to do is show up.  The SC DOT will come out and pick up our bags along the route after completion.

**Our NEXT Clean-up date is tentatively scheduled for March 5th. (start time )  7:45 am – 8:00am**. There is no time expectation for participation.  Stay as long as needed or head out early.  Modify as needed. Plan for 2 hours if you complete the 1-mile loop.  We split up into two groups last time and met at the halfway point.

We will begin at the Peachstand (rear of the building) and coordinate.  I have 30 vests and all supplies.

Fogerty will be the main contact for this event over the next two years.

Here are some of the logistics:

• Make sure your group knows that in case of bad weather the cleanup will be postponed. Litter collection should never be done in the dark or in bad weather.
• Notify local news media who may have an interest in publicizing your group’s activities. • Remind your group of the appropriate clothing. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts and sturdy shoes help avoid scratches and irritation from poisonous plants. Light or brightly colored clothing will make them easily visible to passing traffic.
• Be sure you have all the materials and supplies you’ll need beforehand, including first aid kits.
• Check with members of your group to be aware of any allergies that might be important (such as bee-stings, etc).
• Work out a plan for what you will do in the event of an emergency. Find out what the quickest route to the hospital is.
• Park vehicles at both ends of the adopted section.

• Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to participate in Adopt-A-Highway cleanups. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult on all Adopt-A-Highway cleanups.

The state does provide adopt-a-highway orange and blue bags.  Orange bags are for trash and blue bags are for recyclables if you want to recycle.  Your group is also provided with orange safety vests.   We do require four pickups every year, usually once every quarter.  All that is needed to be done after trash is picked up is to call or email me and I will send one of our crews to pick up the bags.

It is volunteers like you who are going to make a difference by speaking up and doing what they can to help their community.  Please let me know If you have any questions, I will be glad to assist you.

Thank you,

F3TheFort Holiday Drop-In

The Forts annual holiday party will have a different feel this year.
With COVID still lingering we have decided to have a gathering but it will be a bit different.

We are encouraging The PAX to go to dinner with your M and either your Shieldlock, Whetstone, or small group of fellow PAX and their Ms. After dinner we will all gather for an hour or so of a social hour(s).
This will give our Ms the opportunity to meet the crazy fellas we spend the early mornings with but more importantly their M.

We are all fortunate to have this crazy group it is also just as important to try and let our Ms meet some other ladies in the community and possibly let them start great friendships as well.

Make it a day of F3. Start with the golf outing, go to dinner and then grab a couple beers, a bottle of J Lohr wine, a cocktail and let’s kick off the holiday season.

If COVID worries you or your M we will have an outdoor area to hang out at as well as indoor areas.

Meat and Potatoes

YHC had the privilege to have the last Q of Fire Ant before the AO moves and is rebranded as “Currahee.” Plenty of good memories at FA, but Currahee will not disappoint with the new 0500 start time.

Wegmans and YHC took a clown car to meet up with Repeat for an 0445 pre-ruck. Apparently pre rucking is the thing to do… as IT/Divac and Maximus/Olaf were also getting after it prior to our launch.

We circled back to the shovel flag and the PAX were arriving in full force. Maximus knows how to bring the crowds for his Golden Corral Q. A few PAX decided to join YHC for the ruck portion.

Maximus eloquently disclaimed the disclaimer, and we parted ways.

Quick Warm Up Ruck/Shuffle to the YMCA Field

YHC started moving some tires around and Bonsai yells out “those tires have COVID.” Fortunately the intent was to use them as distance markers… nice try there Bonsai, but I ain’t no spring chicken.

Iteration 1:

“Mosher” – 4 Rounds

14 Ruck (Front Rack Position) Front Squats

25ft Lunge Walk w/ OH Hold

14 Strict Press

25f Bear Crawl w/ Ruck Drag

Plank hold w/feet on tire while the 6 finishes up

Iteration 2:

“Time Fuse”

50 Ruck Get Ups

50 Ruck Curls

50 Ruck Squats (Ruck On)

50 Ruck Swings

*Stop and perform 3 ruck burpees every 2 minutes.

YHC had an interval timer and was happy to announce the burpees every two minutes. The rain really picked up about halfway through this iteration. Thanks to Bonsai’s request – we remained slightly dryer by working out on the high ground in the field. Slightly…

Start heading back to COT via Lake Vista Blvd

Iteration 3:

CMIYC

P1 Farmer Carry both rucks, P2 perform 10 Merkins. Chase, flap jack.

Proceed to BoA ATM – Perform 10 Ruck Merkins together.

Shuffle back to COT – 4 minutes remain.

Iteration 4:

Finisher

End with 5’s (the younger cousin of 7’s) of Burpees/Manmakers in front of Bubbles N’ Bows

Complete. What a doozy! At this point everywhere on the ground was a puddle. There was no “damp” pavement. We were drenched. Felt like a kid again.

We Stand Alone Together

We Stand Alone Together

B.L.U.F. – Changes are coming to Fire Ant.  New start time – 0500.  New location – Tega Cay Elementary School.  New name – Currahee.  Launch date is Feb 2.  Read on to understand the why.

The purpose of this change is to establish a ruck AO that is purposefully built to be a harder option.  This will be THE place to come to prepare for your ruck events.  Even if you are not doing an event it will be the place to show up when you are ready to put in max effort and push yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of.  As I stated when I first took over Fire Ant, this is the not the place to come “to get some miles”.  There are other options, very good ones mind you, for that (if you haven’t been to Sole to Soul you are missing out).  This AO is built around purposefully seeking pain and discomfort because we know it is only through these things that we can truly grow.  Let me explain each change a bit more…

Schedule is 0500 – 0600 each Tuesday.  There is a lot that can be done in this extra 15 minutes.  Rather it be allowing for greater distance to be covered or just extra pain the 1-hour format asks a bit more from the Pax and requires a bit more of the Q resulting in growth.

New location is Tega Cay Elementary School.  New location is better suited for more ruck style pain.  Available options, for those who haven’t visited Pantheon, include a very large field, hills, plenty of parking lot, on site coupons, short travel to Tega Cay trails (more hills) and the playground set in the back.  I too will miss seeing the guys at Golden Corral, but this change will allow Ruckers to stretch themselves beyond what is available now I believe.

New name (effective Feb 2) is Currahee.  If you are not familiar with this word, I highly recommend watching Band of Brothers.  It is a Native American word meaning “to stand alone” or “to stand alone together”.  When the paratroopers were first getting established the 506th Airborne Regiment were training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  They would run 3 miles up and 3 miles down Currahee mountain.  This was a brutal test of strength and endurance and truly only the strongest would make it.  That is the tone the new Currahee AO will set.  We stand alone together (not as individuals) and apart from others as we choose to do the harder thing – the thing that even we didn’t think was possible all in an effort to be an elite group of men ready to take on whatever comes at us.

So…if this excites or intrigues you then prepare yourself and be ready to post each week to embrace the pain and the discomfort and ultimately the strength that comes from it.  See you Feb 2 0500 Tega Cay Elementary School.  1-2-3 Currahee!

Pyramid attempt at Fire Ant

On Christmas Eve, Divac introduced us to the way he was going to run The Fire Ant AO now that he is in charge. And guess what, it’s not for the faint of heart. That said, I had to live up to the billing.
In recent months, I’ve noticed a great way to challenge the PAX is to post the Weinke on the socials ahead of time. It also holds me accountable to planning the proper beatdown. So here goes:

Ruck 1 mile at a sub 14min/mi pace to TCES. Full disclosure, Punch List led us at a 13:37 pace…giraffe.

10 Man Makers
20 Lunges (ea leg)
30 Merkins (single ct)
40 Real Squats (you know what this means)
50 Mountain Climbers (left/right = 1)
60 LBC’s (single ct)
70 Curls
80 Peter Parkers (40 I/C) – I believe this is where the leaders ran out of time.
90 Bent Over Rows (45 I/C) – I was really looking forward to these!
100 Flutters w/ Press (50 I/C) – Surprise, Surprise. I was really, really looking forward to these.

Ruck 1 mile back to the Start Ex at a sub 14min/mi pace. We made it about .25mi and I abruptly stopped everyone for a Switzer. The new instructions were to Jail Break back to the Start Ex to complete as many Flutters/Press as you can until 0600. The leaders arrived at a 10:05 pace and a heart rate that neared, “explosive.”

COT practices with the Golden Corral bootcampers.

Log PT

Disclaimer was spoken and we opened up the truck to grab some logs. These logs are pretty sizable, and range from 100-200 pounds. Two PAX per log.

Move the logs to the grass lot/field behind the church. Set logs down on one end of field. While P1 does circuit below, P2 either shoulder carries log out and back to set point or does end over end log flips. Flap Jack until each partner completes entire circuit. Not a DORA – each PAX does 20 of each movement.

Circuit 1

20 Ruck Thrusters

20 Push ups with side ruck pulls (Ruck at your right side…do a push up and then pull your ruck to the other side with your left arm, push up, then pull it back with your right arm)

20 Ruck Burpees

Breathing intensifies…

Circuit 2

20 OH Squats

20 Squats Ruck up front

20 Ruck Swings

LOG PT

Partner up by height to make the log carry more… fair.

5 Ground to Shoulder each side

10 OH press w/log (alternating shoulders)

10 big boy sit ups w/log

10 log press while on back

Carry/Ruck logs back to COT… toss them into the truck.

pre_blast_METTLE FORGER_new_gear_AO

Friends:

I’d like to make available the training gear I’ve accumulated as part of my personal training venture to the Pax of The Fort and start a new Gear AO!

What:  Dealers ( Q ) choice gear AO.

Where: 12:15 pm on Fridays at Turner Field parking lot in Tega Cay.  45 minutes in length.  Inaugural workout on Friday, 10/23.

Why:  To serve the Pax who have flexibility to work from home or may not be early risers.  To reinvigorate Kotters or recruit new FNG’s who need a shieldlock.

How:  the Weinke could include the gear in my trailer or based on the Q’s of the day preference like kettlebell, ruck, or a combination of all.  I will assist the Q’s in setup.

Special Bonus:  a commemorative patch will be awarded to the first 10 Pax who post!

FAQ:

What gear will Bear Grylls make available to the Q’s?

    • The contents of my trailer include sandbags, kettlebells, dumbells, barbells, slam balls, TRX, battle ropes, jump boxes, bench, water jugs, squat rack, strength sled, speed and agility equipment and resistance bands.  A full gear list will be provided to Q’s so they can build their Weinke.

What if the weather turns bad, will the equipment be ruined?

    • Most of the equipment is rubber-coated, however, we won’t use any bare metal items if there is precipitation.  The Q of the day can always revert to a run or boot-camp model.  There is a soccer and baseball field at Turner which provides many pain-station options.

Other questions and concerns can be sent to Twitter at F3_BearGrylls or on Slack.

Fresh off GR021, we’re now at the Fire Ant

If you were one of the 20 PAX that attended Fire Ant today, you heard me talk briefly about the impact of GR021 (GrowRuck 021) in Louisville this past weekend. Along with Olaf, Shady, Italian Job and Dark Helmet, I was blessed to participate in this extremely impactful weekend. Much like the rest of F3, the true benefits go way beyond the workout or in this case, the 14hr team ruck event spanning Saturday night into Sunday morning.

I tried to bring back just a taste of what we experienced and some of my learnings but unless you actually participate in these GrowRuck weekends, it’s hard to comprehend. However, I did want to bring a taste of the PT to our local PAX and so with 19 other Ruckers, we did the following.

Disclaimer

Warm Up
Jog, Knees to chest, Jog, Toy Soldiers, Butt Kickers, Jog back to our rucks

SSH x 5
Windmills x 5
SSH x 10
Windmills x 5

2 line ruck shuffle back to the first starting spot and circle up
5 Merkins – 10 Carolina Dry Dock – 15 Bent Over Rows (all IC)
