We brought it back to the origins of The Yard by combining a tough workout with sports. What should you do when it’s below freezing?

Play basketball! Make sense? Nope, and that’s why we did it. McGruff and Barry Manilow were going for the MVP title. The rest of us were going for ESPN highlights. #GloryDays

The Thang:

Mosey to the bus loop

COP: SSH (30x), IW (20x), WM (15x), Sumo Squats (15x), MC (15x), Merkins (15x), Penguins (20x)

Mosey to the basketball court

Play a game of five on five up to 10. Each basket counted as one point so it took forever before any team to win. #OLD

COP: Scorpions (15x each side), Superman (10 second counts), Burpees (5x OYO), Chopsticks (20x), Peter Parkers (20x)

Moleskin:

Life is too short to watch it pass you by. With the limited time that we have on this planet, be intentional with the following aspects of your life.

1) God – Practice thanksgiving daily, pray and read the bible on a daily basis.

2) Family – Spending time with them in one on one settings (e.g. Daddy & Me time, Date Nights).

3) Resources – Everything that we have comes from God. It’s only right to invest your resources (e.g. time, talent, money) to build His kingdom.

Life is short. We don’t get do overs. Be intentional.

Peace,

Deacon

Disclaimer was disclaimed and off we went to mosey the parking lot, randomly stopping for SSHs and seal jacks.  Along the way, we incorporated high knees, butt kickers, karaoke, side shuffles, and some dynamic stretching.  While the mumble chatter was down significantly from last weeks Birdcage run-fest, a few quips were heard – to the effect of having to run the entire workout and whether the selection of 15 reps was indicative of the Qs age.  NOT NICE!  Running is good for you and the age of the Q should be of no concern.  A beat down is a beat down!

The thang…

For clarity’s sake, on the DRIVE TO THE AO (not before – I will spare the details), the Q (me) realized that today’s workout was the 1 year anniversary of my VQ (give or take a day).  That said, I found it ironic that the workout was dependent on each of the PAX using a Cindy for each exercise in the workout, which was an upgrade from the coupons used in a similar workout last year. As a public service announcement, I suggested that the PAX be careful with their respective Cindy (and use it in the manner instructed by the Q – i.e. DO NOT TRY TO THROW THEM like Dark Helmet did last year!!!).  That was immediately taken out of context (thank you Chicken Wing) and spun into a different story line (again – I will spare the details).  Wait – there was a workout….

Back to The Thang…

PAX using their Cindy performed 2 circuits of 3 sets of 4-5 exercises each, consisting of 45 sec high intensity followed by 15 sec of rest.

Upper Body – Swings, Split Hand Merkins (1on & 1off), O/H Press, O/H Tricep Ext (mod to dips – back to back O/H was D. U. M. B. Dumb), Curls

Lower Body – Squats*, Calf Raises, Lunges, Horizontal Box Jumps

*During the Squats, Kielbasa may have coined the “hugging” of the Cindy while Squatting…. “the Dark Helmet”, giving birth to a new exercise that is loils like an Al Gore hugging a Cindy.

The PAX made their way back to the pull ups bars to do what?  Pull-ups? Nah. AbLab it is.  Each of the PAX led the group in their favorite ab burner.  Oh look – time to go.  Back to COT for countorama, namorma, announcements, prayers/praise, and BOM!

Moleskin

I am thankful to God, thankful for my wife and kids, thankful for F3.  I have had the opportunity to lead and be around a great group of men for over pushing 2 years now.  F3 continues to push me outside my comfort zone and I challenge you to let it do the same for you.  While everyone comes to F3 for different reasons and takes from F3 different things, the commonality for all PAX, in my opinion, is growth; being better tomorrow than you are today.  The most important step to take, is the next one; whether it’s challenging yourself physically/emotionally/spiritually, leading a workout (or even a warm-up)/ a bible study/ a group discussion/ etc. helping another PAX grow, or getting more involved in giving back to the community.  There will be set-backs.  But every step you take outside your comfort zone, no matter how small, will reap dividends.  Just turn around and look how far you’ve come.

Sorry, no creative workout names today. But it was a beautiful crisp morning as the PAX gathered at Quagmire. Good to see some familiar non-Quagmire regular PAX rolling out of the Baxter clown car. Start off with normal disclaimer then added an important addition. The night before was the chili competition at my church….and I ate a lot of chili. So wind position was important today. With that we were moseying to Home Depot with some high knees, butt-kickers, and karaoke along the way. Circle up for some normal warm-ups: SSHs, IWs, Windmills, Merkins, Mtn Climbers, and MNCs.

Mosey to Books-a-Million lot. Old basketball defensive slide drill between 2 parking spaces.
Jacobs latter (7:1) with plank jacks and donkey kicks.
Back to your original 2 parking spots. Bear crawl across and do merkin, then backwards bear crawl and do another merkin. 10 crawls total.
Jacobs latter (7:1) with flying squirrels and seal jacks (CSPAN approved).
Another round of slide drill.

Mosey to fountain and partner up. p1 runs around circle while p2 does work then swap. 1st round – Dips, 2nd – Derkins, 3rd – Box jump burpees (everyone enjoyed), 4th – Crunches.

Mosey to behind Home Depot for Davinci favorite: Wall Webbs. Start in people’s chair, walk out on hands to do merkin, walk back up to chair and do overhead claps. 1:4 up to 10:40. Lots of mumblechatter from Package and CSPAN on this one. Several chicken flapper jokes could’ve been made. Finished up and mosey back to COT.

I’m happy to announce no chili related issues. I was nervous about having to pull an Elvis during my Q. Thanks to all the PAX for coming out, working hard, and getting the week started right. Prayers for Cha-Ching’s grandmother and for his extended family. Prayers for our country during this time. Thanks to Davinci for the opportunity to Q and always an honor to lead and be a part of this group.

There was a 90% chance of rain forecast so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I pulled into the park. So naturally when I pulled in there were several PAX already gathered and no rain falling. Disclaimer butchered and off we moseyed to Spring’s parking lot.

Warm-up staying somewhat quiet: SSHs, IWs, Windmills, Merkins, Mtn Climbers, and some MNCs.
Line up for 12 count suicide. Each way counts as 1. Maybe I should switch to 6 count where over and back count as 1. But 12 sounds better.
20 Plank Jacks, 15 Ski-hops.
Another round of 12 count suicide.

Shared with the PAX a quote that stuck with me this week: Little people belittle people. Great people make others great. Belittling seems too common today especially in the world of anonymous comments, attention craving individuals, etc. But great is a big word. I definitely don’t consider myself great today and not sure I’ll ever get there. But I try to get better and try to help others get better. So I prefer little people belittle people. Good people try to make things better. With that, it was time to make us better with some lazy Dora.

Partner up.
100 Merkins – p1 does 10 merkins while p2 holds plank. Keep swapping until 100.
200 LBCs – p1 does 20 LBCs while p2 holds legs 6″. Keep swapping until 200.
300 Squats – p1 does 25 squats while p2 holds air people’s chair. Keep swapping until 300.
Another round of 12 suicides to get the legs working again.
Go back down the other side:
200 Freddie Mercurys – p1 does 20 while p2 holds legs 6″. Swap til 200.
100 CDDs – p1 does 10 while p2 holds plank. Swap til 100.
Final round of 12 suicides.
Finish up with 20 crab cakes since he was in attendance and then mosey back to the park.

I think this was the tallest group of PAX assembled with Flat Tire, Bonzai, and Crab Cakes. It was nice to feel short. Thanks to Lil E for the opportunity and always an honor to lead.

Pre-Blast, Fort Mill Care Center Work Day

  • When: 02/11/17

Pre-Blast

It is time once again to step up and be leaders in our community by helping an organization that supports those in need. The Fort Mill Care Center provides food and assistance within the Fort Mill community. The Fort Mill Care Center has built a storage building and needs help moving in. There are two projects that will need to happen at the same time.

First we will be building pallets and shelves for the storage of food. Work will began at 9:30 AM on Saturday February 11 2017. We will need some HIMs to step up and help with construction and cutting of materials (I will have a stack of pre-cut materials on hand so construction can begin first thing).

Tools required:

Electric drill, impact, or screw gun with spare batteries and #2 Phillips drive bit. (I will have 3 extra with me)

Speed square if you have one.

Clamps with at least 3” capacity if you have any (we won’t need many)

I will handle the saws that will be needed.

Second we will need to move food from the pantry to the new building. Work will began at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 11 2017. We will need several HIMs to help with this as well. We will be moving several hundred/thousand pounds of food.

Tools required:

Dollys

Strong legs (lift with your legs, not your back!)

Please contact Spencer Arnold (Dreamhouse) at spencea15@gmail.com and let me know if you will be able to assist.

CONDITIONS: 30’s with a slight breeze

After a good classic Crossfit workout (Mini Murph) yesterday morn at Guns N Moses by Italian Job, most of the York Pax where pretty fatigued this morn.  Little did they know that YHC had already planned to do another good classic workout (Filthy Fifty) from Crossfit with them…this really made it a gloomy gloom…hahaha.

No FNG’s present, quick disclaimer given, brief explanation of the workout, and away we went.  Advised the PAX that after today, they would understand empathy/sympathy as we would all be sucking wind and looking for some support from one another.

WARMUP:

Merkins IC x lucky number 13

THE THANG:

Moseyed to BlackLung’s abode and grabbed 6 “treats”…ole Cindy.  Moseyed to the wall where the PAX split into two groups: one group began with 50 box jumps on the wall while the other group started 50 reps of kettlebell swings using the Cindys.  About half way through the set, some chatter started from the “swingers” and I thought this would be an appropriate time to let all know that all exercises done this morn would be to a count of 50.  PAX planked up for the six and then we flipped flopped with exercises.

Moseyed (with the Cindys) to the playground behind the church down the road (not sure of the name). PAX was informed the next set would be 50 jumping pullups while the other group did 50 overhead press with Cindy.  Plank up for the six before flipping and moving on.

The next evolution involved one group doing 50 walking lunges while the other did 50 bent over rows with Cindy.  Side note: Make sure you have plenty of room when doing the walking lunges with HighPockets present…that man can cover some ground. Plank for the six and flip.

We then went back to the pull up bars (a crowd favorite) for 50 elbows to knees while the other group did 50 bodyweight thrusters.  Again, this took a bit of time for the guys on the bars so we added an additional 50 bodyweight thrusters to help compensate the time difference.  Plank for the six, aaaannnddd flip.

Time was running a bit thin so I called an audible which I’m SURE the PAX was grateful for.  The last exercise was supposed to be 50 Burpees.  Instead we did 9 Merkins IC and a Burpee for the tenth, twenty, thirty, forty, and fifty…total of 45 Merks and 5 Burpees.  A few of the PAX earned some “extra credit” for doing the Burpees with Cindy…(sorry I don’t remember who all did these)…but AWESOME job.

We then collected up the Cindys and moseyed back to their resting spot before continuing on to the COT.  Once back, we had a few mins left so I decided to implement some takedown moves we learned at Coal Train.  The PAX did a couple of Burpees to keep the heart rate up and replicating “false stress” while we conducted a takedown of an “aggressor” safely to the ground.  The PAX was advised that this was done as extra practice but also to show how the move is a little different under some sort of stress and fatigue and that it would still work.  Thanks Numbchuck for the new tool in our toolbox.

Announcements Made (newsletter, CAH, Yeti, Dragon Convergence, PreRuck, GoFundMe, new possible AO at Coal Yard (Strength) and York Intermediate (Ruck), prayer requests given, counted off, BOM.

Awesome job to all the PAX for pushing through the workout.  I know it wasn’t easy, it wasn’t supposed to be.  We did this workout as a group so all could get an experience to use one day to show empathy/ sympathy to our fellow brothers, family, friends, and strangers needing help.

Cant wait for the next chance to “Q” with yall again….Bounty out!

More than 2 people showed up so I’m out of my element based on my last Q…

Warmup

SSH x20, Windmill x10, IW x15, Mountain climbers x20
I let it be known that I never lock my fingers behind my head.  I do this because I see it as a liability.  You should never pull down on your neck.  Also, if your fingers are locked, your hands are not ready.  Similar to running with your hands in your pockets, its good to be prepared for a fall (just in case).  This took a downward spiral towards prison references.  Thank you PAX.

The Thang

Mosey to stairs
Merkin stair climb (I personally use the stagger method, but whatever you think is best for you)
Run the ramp down
Repeat
Find a stair calf raises x30, squats x10, right leg calf raise x30, squats, left leg x30, squats, both leg calf raises x30

Mosey to wall in front of building.  Sermon: There are truths in this world that make themselves known in multiple outlets.  The purpose in life, why you are here, is to build positive relationships.  The two most important commandments as told be the creator of our faith is “love God” and “love your neighbor”.  A book was written/movie made about a young man called “Into the Wild”.  Although not a religious man, he came to the same conclusion: “Happiness is only real when shared”.
So why not find a partner and share 5 minutes of suck?  Brilliant! You and your partner have to trade between balls to walls and peoples chair for 5 minutes.

Next take a lap while partner does exercises.  Merkins/LBCs, Drydocks/, Shrugs/squats

6MOM

oblique LBC x20 each side, protractor, captain thor to 5

Moleskin

Pray for sick family, injured PAX, and that we may establish a relationship with men so we may hold them accountable when needed.  I’ve come to realize the typical man from F3 has a bit stronger will than average.  You did nothing to achieve your will.  God put you in places where it was strengthened and you probably hated Him for it at the time, but you are better for it now.  Be strong for those that aren’t.

I’m honored and fortunate to lead.

3rd F Convergence – Intentional Living

  • QIC: Chicken Hawk and Repeat
  • When: 02/25/2017
  • Pax: All The Fort and The Rock Pax
  • Posted In: Uncategorized

On Saturday, February 25 at 5:30 – 7:00 am at Eternal Church we are gathering to discuss the topic of intentionality.  As we complete the 2nd month of the year only a short time after setting our New Year’s resolutions or setting your “word” or your “goals” or whatever code word you use.  The imperative question is “How is it going”??  Have you started to slip a bit?  Have your goals been amended?  Can you even remember what you committed to in the throws of an inspiring Santini motivational Q?

Please join us for our first 3rd F convergence of the year where you will hear from four HIMs who will help bring this idea of intentionality to life through their personal journeys.  This is a session where the concept of iron sharpening iron will come to life as in typical F3 fashion we will look to our brothers in the Pax to grow stronger and we will hold each other accountable to be better.  Don’t miss an opportunity to grow through the real life testimonies of those same men that are in your presence in the gloom.  Get ready to lean in, share your perspective and to get inspired to lead a more intentional life.

Part of leading a more intentional life is walking in step with an accountability partner.  Maybe you signed up for a Whetstone partner but it never materialized into anything that was life changing.  Please take the next couple of weeks to challenge yourself to reflect on why it didn’t work out.  What can you change from now going forward to more intentionally engage in that relationship, to open up and be more vulnerable, to sacrifice time and to put more effort into developing the relationship.  Maybe you didn’t sign up last year, take some time to familiarize yourself with what Whetstone is and pray about who in the Pax you can take a step to build that accountability relationship. (Look at the materials for Whetstone under 3rd F on the right side of the newsletter)
