Remembering Badger

Thirty-five of Fort Mill’s finest gathered at Springfield Elementary to honor a brother who left us too early:  Matt Giesler, aka Badger.   Matt was originally from Wisconsin but made his home in SC with his wife Becky and his three children Brayden, Ashlyn, and Carsten.   Badger was a neighbor and friend to me, Decibel, Trucker, and Jiffy, and this morning, his fellow brothers of The Fort joined us for a brisk morning workout.  Here is what we did:

The Thang:

Senator Tressel led the pax on a short lap around the drop-off lane of Springfield Elementary before ending up in the adjacent field for COP.

All in double count cadence:

SSH x 25, IW x 25, merkin x 10, windmill x 15, mountain climber x 25, Freddie Merc x 25, hello dolly x 25, squat x 25

Line up next to the set of cones:

Round 1:  Lungewalk to 1st cone, 5 squats, continue to 2nd cone, 10 squats, continue to 3rd cone, 15 squats, run backwards to the start.

Round 2:  Bear crawl to 1st cone, 5 squats, ….., run backward to the start

Round 3:  Run to the last cone, 10 burpees, and run backward to the start

Handoff to Decibel:

Do the following exercises with a lap around the field between each:

MERKINS X25
ALTERNATING LUNGES X25
TOE TAPS X25
TONY HAWK BURPEE X15
GORILLA HUMPER X20

ST’s comments:

I was truly touched by the number of men who showed up today to honor Badger.  I know that many of the men did not know him, but it meant a lot to us to have such a large group together as we remembered Badger.    It was another reminder to me of what a special thing we have at F3 here in Fort Mill and how much my F3 brothers mean to me.

Decibel’s thoughts:
It is hard to believe that it has been 4 years since Badger went to be in heaven.  I
was blessed to spend time with him prior to his passing.  We talked about him
being saved and how important that was to him.  He let me know that his M was a
big reason he was saved but also saw my family’s reaction to losing our
daughter and son and our dependence on God at that time.  I am saying this to let
you know as Christians people watch our actions and want to make sure our
actions match our words.  I encourage every Christian brother in F3 to live out
your faith and in times of need lean on God just like Badger did in his time.
My M and I received a letter from Badger.  In that letter he mentioned F3 and the
support he and his family received after the diagnosis.  I remember him just being
in awe of all the people that were praying for him.  He was so touched by this
community that he asked that I make sure that his boys get involved in F3.  They
would have been there today, but his youngest wasn’t feeling well. To have 35
men in our community support Badger is amazing.
Badger was a man I respected to the utmost.  He was not a guy that sought
attention or glory, but he was always there when you needed him.  He loved his
family and was a loyal friend.  I am still in awe of how he bravely prepared to walk
into heaven.  It was so comforting to know he was going to see Jesus.  He told
me many times that he would take care of our babies (Elizabeth Grace and
Garrett) until we met up with him.  Badger was a great Father and I know he is
having a blast with my kids in heaven.
Let us all take this time to pour into, support, love on and encourage our F3
brothers. Then take that momentum and turn it to our families.  Then take that
momentum and pour it out on the least and the lost in our community.  Badger
knew that God had a purpose for him and that purpose was to spread the word of
God’s Grace and Love.  Let’s make that happen for him.

Running … into trees

It was hot and humid, first day all year as such.
We ran.
Some ran 3.4 miles.
At least one ran 5.5 miles.
At least one ran into a tree (it’s not a laughing matter)
At least one hung out by the bank and smoked Marlboro Reds (rumor has it)

Get off my lawn!

Looks like we made it,

Snakes and Arrows

A group of 7 met at FMHS for the last Laces In workout of August 2022. Here is what they did:

The Thang:

After a brief disclaimer around the shovel flag, we moseyed around the parking lot and ended up in the grassy field by the football stadium for COP

All in Cadence:

SSH x 25, windmill x 15, IW x 25, merkin x 10, LBC x 25, flutter x 25, hello dolly x 25, jumping lunge x 15, squat x 20, Moroccan nightclub x 40 while walking back to parking lot.

Line up at the lot next to a row of empty parking spaces. One by one, shuffle across the parking lot space line, do one burpee at the end of the line, advance to the next line, shuffle across, do one burpee at the end of the line, etc., continue through about 10 spaces. Rinse and repeat with bomb jacks.

Mosey back to the grassy field for modified Jack Webb. In place of merkins/overhead claps, we did V-ups and Freddie Mercuries (1:4 ratio). We did 5, took a short break and completed, 6, 7, an 8 before stopping. Man that was hard! Recover and mosey to the shed across the lot.

Assume People’s chair against the shed. Hold, and one by one, each guy does 3 burpees.

BTTW hold, while one by one down the line, each member of the Pax does a 10 count

Rinse and repeat above.

Line up for an Indian run across the lot to the entrance of parking lot (up/down the hill) and back to the shovel flag.

COT

I have been posting very intermittently lately due to a shoulder injury, and had not Q’d a workout since January of this year. I didn’t feel like I had my ‘A’ game out there today, but I felt I gave the guys their money’s worth. After 10 years, it’s still a blast to get together in the morning, Q a workout, and lead the fine men of F3. I’m looking forward to the next 10 years. Snakes and Arrows is another Rush reference. Bell repeats

WARMUP: Mosey for a short lap then circle up for SSHs, Windmills, Low slow squats, Merkins, and Hillbilly Walkers.
THE THANG: I’m a big fan of simple yet difficult. So I stole some things from rucking and repurposed them.
First thing was 15 min AMRAP of the following 3 things:
15-High pulls, 15-Swings, and 15-Overhead squats.
Not going to lie, I thought we were close to time and then looked at watch and it said 7 minutes. Finished up then moved over to far parking lot.
Buy-in=4 line suicide with 5 bombjacks at each line
8 rounds of the following:
5 Burpees
8 Curls
8 Triceps
8 Mountain Climbers
8 Merkins w/bell pull thru
We got through about 5 rounds before time was running short. So finished up with run across lot for 10 bombjacks then grab the bells and head back to COT.
Finished with 10 bell overhead big boys and 10 flutters.

I definitely don’t do kettlebell workouts enough. I need to do a better job of working it into my rotation. I also need to be better prepared. I thought Uhual would bring some music but he didn’t show this morning. So the PAX made up for it in mumblechatter. I appreciate all the PAX coming out this morning and Battle-bot for the Q opportunity.

Hills of Tega Cay

Your previous Site Q was called upon to bring back #BAOPS Pain to Alcatraz. Sadly the current Site Q conveniently scheduled YHC when he was away…hmmmm. All week YHC was planning a weinke so that his entire Bourbon Chase team would post and support their driver. Well, only 2 posted, so the remaining team members will be walking or running between transition locations. What is Tega Cay known for? Well Fishsticks created a weinke “one time” that allows all PAX to experience all the HILLS of Tega Cay, so I figured why not use that as a platform. We also welcomed a FNG!!

The Thang:

During COP discussed the weinke as staying on the parking for full hour. HA! after a short COP, mossy to pull-up bars (shocking). Each PAX held plank while each did 5 pull-ups. The FNG was the second best performing pull-ups! Mossy along the path to the intersection of Tega Cay DR and Woodhaven Dr. That is base camp. From there, there are 6 legs (hills) to explore. Run to end of Woodhaven, Timberlake, Catamaran, to the lower fire station parking lot, to the bridge, and to the bottom of the infamous hill. Do 10 merkins, then back to base for 15 LBCs. Some got 4+ miles, others 3+ miles…..it was glorious!

As for FNG, grew up in Iowa and a Hawkeyes fan…..Hayden Frye is their head coach for those non-Big10 fans. YEs Big10 is THE college football conference!

Trucker out

Chatter, Krakens, Fellowship more chatter and more Krakens

WARMUP: mosey to playground parking lot – burpees, windmills, imperial and hillbilly walkers, more burpees, squats, holding people’s chair for Moroccan night clubs and air presses while mumblechatter escalated quickly. Pusher enjoyed the view of YHC’s good side at this point of the workout.  Planks ensued along with a few Broga poses, Peter Parker’s and merkins.  From there we moseyed to the bus loop for the main event.

THE THANG: partners took turns alternating running between ab stations and 4 exercise stations. The stations were comprised of 8 burpees or 8 kraken burpees (which Dark Helmet loved), 18 of another exercise and 22 of another – Carolina dry docks, derkins, squats, lunges, merkins and side straddle hops (because YHC did not include them in the warm up) specifically. PAX did all of them and got 1% better.

After 8 rounds were completed between partners, we moseyed around the school, recited the pledge to honor those serving our country and protecting our freedoms. Then moseyed past three more light poles were 3 burpees were done at each one.  Just because.

MARY: Sasquatch led 2 minutes of Broga which brought us to 0600.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: We’re exclaimed
COT: Prayers were offered.  And we welcomed FNG Sweat Shop.

YHC is grateful for the culture and fellowship we are so fortunate to have in the Fort. Showing up in the gloom each morning for the man next to us truly enables acceleration beyond just the workout.

Thanks to Poppins for the call to Q.  It’s always an honor to lead.

Gratefully,
Cyclops

What’s the count?

Big crowd at Clydesdales this morning. The planned route was followed by some and others took their own path. Twister has a new pair of shoes. Apparently, they were out of all the men’s colors.

Like a Flock of Seagulls …

We ran.
Most ran past Hardee’s, some ran to Hardee’s.
Some ran all the way to Summersby & Unity.
One pre-ran the run.
17 out, 17 back.
Note to Olaf … the trees need trimming between launch and The Peach Stand.

Looks like we made it,
