The Respectables take over The Fort

Long Duck and YHC had the Q at The Fort on Saturday.  Long Duck gave the disclaimer and quietly mentioned that we would be running (same for the second half).

We circled up in the church parking lot for warm-ups (SSHs, Windmills, Imperial Walkers). Next, the instructions:

  • Run to Main Street and back
    • Exercises in parking lot
      • 10 Burpees
      • 20 Merkins
      • 11 Big Boy Situps
    • Rinse and repeat 3 times

Long Duck  shared his personal journey and the significance of the numbers used for the repetitions.

Next, hand off to Fishsticks. Short message about never giving up.

We ran to the warehouse parking lot on Wither street.  If you haven’t been there, it is at the top of a hill.  We ran down the hill and at each right turn, we performed the following exercises (Carolina Dry Docks, Squats, and LBCs – 10 each), ran back to the warehouse parking lot for another set of the exercises.  Rinse and repeat until we reached Tom Hall Street.

Great job by all!

Why Run?

Why Run?

To lose weight, improve health, train for a race or manage stress. These are but a few of the many motivations for running. Initially, mine was to complete a half marathon, then a full marathon, then overnight relay races, then 50K’s. The side benefits were health and stress-related but it didn’t start there. It is interesting to look back on my life and see how the road was full of left and right turns to get to where I am today. When I ran that first race, I couldn’t have possibly known where the road would lead 10+ years later. It’d be foolish to think I can predict where the road will take me 10 years from today.

When I started that adventure in 2009, I knew my motivation. As life evolved and I ran more, I saw it as an outlet to help manage obstacles. If dinner included two large plates, that next morning would include a hard workout or a long run. If the stress of the day ran higher than usual, that evening would include a run. If I was missing fellowship with a friend, I’d send a text for a buddy-run and hope it fell on receptive ears. While motivations changed, they would fall into one of two categories. I was either running from or running toward something. Running from included the meal choices, an elevated stress level or life’s frustrations. Running toward were more positive, like training, mind clearing or catching up.

But what about in other areas of my life? Are there places in my life where I am trying to run from reality rather than run intentionally forward? As I think back, there have been times when I have put my name in the hat for a job change yet know my motivation for the position could be questioned.   Am I actually excited about a new opportunity and feel it will take me forward to achieving a career goal, or could I just not stand the thought of another Groundhog Day? Is my current situation so unbearable that I truly believe anything will be better? Is there greener grass? In other words, am I running away, or am I running towards something?

Maybe the situation isn’t work driven; maybe it’s relationship driven. I need to go meet a friend for a beer because if I go home, I’m going to lose it. My wife doesn’t understand what I deal with everyday yet when I come home, it seems as if I can’t do anything right. As men, we yearn for respect. We’ll seek out opportunities where other people or groups respect us for who we are or for what we bring to the table. If I’m a good accountant, it’s understandable that I would find opportunities to perform accounting functions, especially if others find accounting difficult. If I’m a good salesman, I’ll be attracted to situations where I can engage with others and use my persuasive personality for advantageous reasons. On the other hand, if I am that accountant or salesman yet come home and feel the pressure of not being a good enough husband, father or provider, I’ll seek out other avenues where my respect card is punched.

Several years ago, I had blinders on and saw how the world, at least my little piece of it, was not showing me the respect I was due. Never mind the notion that I already built up the negativity in my mind before I even walked in the door after a day at work. I felt I was being realistic. My wife had a full-time job and we had three young kids. Those three young kids had homework to do and other activities to get to. I didn’t expect my wife to have an apron on in the kitchen making a large Sunday spread on a Wednesday. That’s ridiculous. In my head, all I wanted, or so I thought, was to be acknowledged when I walked in the door. You kids can’t even press pause on the show (much less look up from it) and my wife couldn’t give me more than what amounted to a head nod? Where did I mess this up?

The blinders kept me from seeing what was really going on. Let’s replay the scene again with a little more context. I would pull into the driveway and already, I had created this scene bound for disrespect. In sales, I could convince others, yet this time, I had convinced myself disrespect awaited me on the other side of that door. In my mind, I had already put the expectations on my undeserving family, and they were doomed for failure. What I didn’t tell you was that my wife’s hands were in the midst of making dinner and she looked at me and winked. She had every intention of giving me a hug and a kiss, showing me respect, yet her hands were creating something for us to enjoy, together. As for the kids, guess what? They’re kids, not robots. They’re going to be engrossed in a show, a song or a game and just because I entered the house and took their oxygen, doesn’t mean their world must stop. I realize now, I want them to respect AND love me, not fear me.

While these self-concocted scenarios existed only in my mind, I found myself avoiding what was driving them. I had issues that needed to be uncovered and addressed. I was running away from accountability and running towards blame. I should’ve been running away from selfishness and toward my family for security or to my faith for validation. I missed the respect they were giving me many times to instead focus on the few times where their “lack” of overt respect was convenient for my narrative.

What about you? Are you running from life and therefore running towards distraction? Do you lack contentment with your surroundings and look for the excuse to escape? Do you use phrases like “I can’t wait to get away?” Let me ask you to put yourself in your kids’ or your wife’s shoes and imagine how this statement may be perceived. Imagine your dad saying, “I can’t wait to get away (…from you).” Think if you heard your dad say this; you’d think he was running away from a moment that involved you.  Our words carry weight.  Our actions have an effect.

Are our desires for change driven by a passion or excitement to move towards something great, or is it more somber? Is our desire for movement driven by a feeling that we cannot stay put and must flee? Are we running towards something good, or are we running away from something that is troubling us?  Whatever the motivation, we must be honest with ourselves, clear with our intentions, and aware of any potential blind spots that actually need to be dealt with, not ignored. This past year, we have all been challenged. Whether you’ve been working from home, lost a job, dealt with money issues, faced health concerns or lost a loved one, there has been every reason to ‘run away’ from life. But the real growth comes when we lean in and, rather, run towards a better version of ourselves. The version where we know ourselves and are known by others. That’s worth getting up each morning. That’s worth running towards.

Acceleration

  • QIC: Anchorman/Pusher
  • When: 03/20/2021
  • Posted In: Pre-Blast

I get it.  We’re all busy.  We’ve got work, kids, and wife vying for our time.  Pre-dawn posts work so well because we don’t take time from anyone to do it.

You’ve gotten faster.  Stronger.  Better.

And perhaps you’ve allowed COTs to open you up to speak on things you never thought you’d share before.

But what if your community needed you to do a little bit more?

Because what is in evidence in the world around us now is a lack of leadership and empathy.

I define empathy as the ability to see the world how someone else sees it.  I don’t have to agree with their view, but understanding where they come from allows me to open my view wider.

I have accomplished this through conversation, reading and podcast listening.  Not just of things that I would normally gravitate to, but subjects and people that would be polar opposite of where I am.  I take recommendations and consume them.

Because of this, I have been accused of being a mile wide and an inch deep, but it makes me fun at cocktail parties (remember those?)

All this leads me to an idea I’ve had floating around in my head for a while.  I like Q Source.  But I’ve felt like there is a more to discuss when it comes to leadership and growth outside that book.  2020 opened up the world of podcasts to me, and with it a lot of different ways of thinking.

So after consulting with Pusher, Barry Manilow, Double D and others, I’d like you to set aside some time for 6 weeks starting March 13 post workout on Saturdays for Acceleration.

Acceleration is a discussion lead by a Pax who share with all of us a podcast or an article that has struck something inside of them. At this point, I have no idea what subjects will come up.  There won’t be a common theme – other than something that made an impression on the Q and them sharing it with you.  It could be leadership or parenting or faith or how to build shelves.

The Thang:

Double D will kick us off week one.  On March 13, he will let you know what podcast or article you need to consume.  You will have that week to do so.  That Saturday the 20th, he will lead discussion on his chosen article or podcast.  He will want to hear your takeaways.  Your disagreements.  How it could change something in your life.

And the kicker is, you might not agree with the premise or conclusion.  It may be outside anything you’ve thought about before.  It’s a challenge.  That’s the idea.

Just like anything, you will have to put in a little work to get the most out of it.

Following weeks will work the same.  Q will announce his chosen article or podcast one week prior to his Q, so you will have 7 days to get it done.  This will be in-person only.  Location TBD but will be outside so being a chair.

We get better together.  Staying in our own echo chambers consuming what we always consume puts us in a rut.  This is a start to try a new path.

What will the you after six weeks be able to see that the current you can’t now?

Step up.  Step forward.  Contribute, listen and learn.  It’s all about Acceleration.

Things Happen When They Are Supposed To Happen

Today was my last Q before I donate a kidney to a friend on Monday (1/25).  The workout was designed to highlight some of the lessons I’ve learned throughout this process and I hope to impart on the 10 PAX that showed up because they could.

I started my journey to kidney donation back on September 5th when a friend of mine posted to FB “I’m dying. Some of you already know this. Both of my kidneys have failed due to my lifelong struggle with diabetes. There is no hope for them to ever resume function. I’m on dialysis now as of March. I’m normally a private person when it comes to my health, but things have changed in my life.  I’m in pain every day and have had numerous hospitalizations in the past few months.”

Read that and tell me you don’t want to find a way to help.  Now, let’s be honest, I had NEVER in my life considered donating a kidney until I knew someone who was in need.  That night, I registered with Duke University to see if I could be a match.

Now, nothing happens fast.  Nothing happens on the time table you have in your mind.  We have to trust in God and lets his process and plan play out.  It was several weeks before I heard back from Duke to talk about the process to see if it’ll work.  There are numerous blood tests, scans, evals.  Let’s just say, it’s not easy.  And in hindsight, it shouldn’t be easy.  This is not something to take lightly, but it could be easier.

So, how does all of this fold into the workout? We started with the mosey and warm-up and then I told everyone to run a lap around the parking lot and to remember the order that they finished in.  Of course, Slapshot was the fastest.  Trucker was the 6 today.

Now, the reason we did that was so that the person who was the 6 now became the leader/pacesetter for the rest of the workout.  There are 25 parking spaces per row in the lot.  We started with 1 burpee per spot AND THE CATCH is that you cannot pass the person in front of you.  Then run a lap where you cannot pass the person in front of you.  Next, 2 squats in that same can’t pass the person in front of you method.  Then 3 merkins, 4 knee taps, and finally 5 plank shoulder taps.

So what’s the lesson in doing it this way? For those of us to might lead the pack most of the time, we had to wait.  We had to be patient.  We couldn’t go as fast as we wanted to.

What was your plan for this morning? Did you get the workout you expected? Did you make the most of the time you spent with your brothers?  Were you encouraging?  Are you helping those in front of you?  Are you prepared both mentally and physically for when things don’t go as planned?

I know that I wanted the donation to happen sooner.  It was going to be more convenient for me to do this in December from a work and family perspective.  But God has a plan.  God wants this to happen when he wants it to happen.  Trust in his plan.  Even if his plan is for this to not be successful for Petra (my recipient) then I have to trust that God is using me and this time to try to educate and inspire others.

We’ll be carrying on the good fight as we start a charity/non-profit to help generate awareness, community and to raise funds for kidney research.  The Odd Kidneys Group will be a way for us to foster education and share the inspirational stories that are out there that go untold.  You’d be surprised by the number of HIM’s in the area that are going through this journey or are considering it since I’ve been talking about it at COT’s.

Today is a day for us to take stock of the fortunes that God has bestowed upon us and look for his guidance to share it with others.  I’m thankful that I was EH’d by @Polaroid 18 months ago and that I’m in the best shape of my adult life so that I can give the most precious gift anyone can to another person– more time.  Thank you to all of you for your support, encouraging words, and prayers over the last 5 months.  We are a group like no other and I am beyond grateful for each of you who do the hard things and understand that we GET TO DO THIS.  Keep posting PAX!

Splinter!

Block Party Beatdown

YHC took the opportunity to celebrate MLK Day by spending some quality time with the M yesterday. During that time, we made our way down to WEP to get an update on the progress of construction of our new amphitheater. While strolling around downtown, I began to formulate my plan for pain at Block Party today. Who knew we had so many telephone poles in Fort Mill?

The plan was to challenge the Pax with both an upper and lower body portion in separate doses. YHC made the weinke, reviewed prior to the start and away we went.

19 Pax joined me today. There is definite acceleration at Block Party and this is largely due to the leadership of Bobber. Over the last 8 years, AO success has largely been due to two factors: Site Q and difficulty of the workout. Bobber has been a leader in both areas. T-claps to you!

We Stand Alone Together

We Stand Alone Together

B.L.U.F. – Changes are coming to Fire Ant.  New start time – 0500.  New location – Tega Cay Elementary School.  New name – Currahee.  Launch date is Feb 2.  Read on to understand the why.

The purpose of this change is to establish a ruck AO that is purposefully built to be a harder option.  This will be THE place to come to prepare for your ruck events.  Even if you are not doing an event it will be the place to show up when you are ready to put in max effort and push yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of.  As I stated when I first took over Fire Ant, this is the not the place to come “to get some miles”.  There are other options, very good ones mind you, for that (if you haven’t been to Sole to Soul you are missing out).  This AO is built around purposefully seeking pain and discomfort because we know it is only through these things that we can truly grow.  Let me explain each change a bit more…

Schedule is 0500 – 0600 each Tuesday.  There is a lot that can be done in this extra 15 minutes.  Rather it be allowing for greater distance to be covered or just extra pain the 1-hour format asks a bit more from the Pax and requires a bit more of the Q resulting in growth.

New location is Tega Cay Elementary School.  New location is better suited for more ruck style pain.  Available options, for those who haven’t visited Pantheon, include a very large field, hills, plenty of parking lot, on site coupons, short travel to Tega Cay trails (more hills) and the playground set in the back.  I too will miss seeing the guys at Golden Corral, but this change will allow Ruckers to stretch themselves beyond what is available now I believe.

New name (effective Feb 2) is Currahee.  If you are not familiar with this word, I highly recommend watching Band of Brothers.  It is a Native American word meaning “to stand alone” or “to stand alone together”.  When the paratroopers were first getting established the 506th Airborne Regiment were training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  They would run 3 miles up and 3 miles down Currahee mountain.  This was a brutal test of strength and endurance and truly only the strongest would make it.  That is the tone the new Currahee AO will set.  We stand alone together (not as individuals) and apart from others as we choose to do the harder thing – the thing that even we didn’t think was possible all in an effort to be an elite group of men ready to take on whatever comes at us.

So…if this excites or intrigues you then prepare yourself and be ready to post each week to embrace the pain and the discomfort and ultimately the strength that comes from it.  See you Feb 2 0500 Tega Cay Elementary School.  1-2-3 Currahee!
