The Coop: Mixed Meters

24 PAX gathered in the gloom. The summer numbers bump is upon us. Can we stick with it when it is 10° again??

The Thang: Lots of mixed (non-4) counts

Mosey to Elementary School parking lot

Flutters x15
LBC x15
Catalina Wine Mixer x2 (hit 6 o’clock)

NMM:

As PAX, we regularly challenge ourselves physically in the gloom. Leaving the comfort of the fart sack to push ourselves and get better. But how often do we challenge ourselves mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Often with these challenges we don’t have to wake up and head to the gloom; they come our way without us seeking.

How do we respond to emotional challenges presented in the form of a four-year-old trying to situate their sock perfectly when it is time to go? Or mentally when there’s a civic challenge that needs to be addressed? Or spiritually when were faced with our own demons?

Addressing and improving physically is a wonderful thing, but we as PAX must strive to better ourselves emotionally, mentally, and spiritually as well. Otherwise we are always out of balance.

If you build it, they will come..

The weather forecasts leading up to Slow Burn showed what could have been a soggy outing. In preparation, I made sure I had not one, but two Weinke’s prepared for the PAX. One bringing back a popular game from College past to keep us dry, “Roxanne,” with a slightly different spin, and the other a friendly mosey around the parking lots with a few exercises mixed in. Surprisingly, it ended up being a perfect day and with it, an impressive 30 PAX showed for the party.

Warm-up

Mosey to the parking lot in front of Empire Pizza

Along the way, did some butt kicks, high knees and side shuffles, left and right and circled up for some warm-up

SSH- x25

LSS- x10

Windmill-x10

Moroccan- x25

Overhead Claps- x20

Happy Jacks- 4 rounds- 5 SSH/ 2 jump squats- a nice new surprise for the PAX

Mountain Climbers- x 10

Annie- 1-2 (1) Total of 10-

The Thang

Mumble Chatter was in full force and hard to avoid with such a great number.

First Round-Same parking lot, PAX lined up close to the center back parking line and faced towards the curb heading at a slight decline. Kicked off the fun with a round of 7’s. PAX started with 1- CDD and sprint to the other side- 6 squats. Continue this pattern until the the flip-flop happens, and you are ending with 6-CDD and 1-squat. Great work out of everyone. Plank until the Six was in.

Second round-Mosey over to the parking lot next to the new restaurant Persia (not sure if that’s the name). PAX lined up along the parking space middle line facing the curb. Seemed to be a theme for the day. Next up- Modified ascending bear crawl until 13. 1-CDD then Bear Crawl to other side- 2 Derkins. Bear Crawl back to starting position, complete 3-CDD. Continue this pattern until you end on 13- CDD. Once complete, a couple of ten counts and off to the next destination. Amazingly, the mumble chatter had decreased significantly!

Third round– Mosey over to the right side of Lowes and all the PAX grabbed some space on the wall. I had originally planned for some chicken peckers, look it up. Instead we started a 10 count at one of the PAX line and continued with all PAX in a chair position. PAX joined in with instructions to push everyone to that great feeling of displeasure. Thanks for chipping in! As it got to the halfway point, I could hear the mumble chatter wondering what happened to the moderate workout, so I gave a quick leg shake break. Quick it was, and then back on the wall. We didn’t quite complete the entire line but I commend the PAX on the effort.

Next up Individual suicides- showed the PAX the lines to hit and off they went. 5 Merkins after first set and 5 flying squirrels after the second.  Took a break in between to highlight for the group the mission and 5 principles of F3. Hopefully the FNG’s heard it!

Headed back to the warm-up spot for some Mary work

Dolly-20

Reverse Crunch- 20

American Hammer- 15

Flutter kicks- 15

Mountain Climbers/Peter Parkers/Parker Peters

Back to COT

It wasn’t quite Six O’ Clock so we needed one more exercise to get us there, and Trucker happily offered up toe touches to get us home. Thanks!

Announcements– read your newsletter

Prayers/Praises– Badger, Glenn, Children, Teachers, Parents, Smithers, CSPAN, if I missed one I apologize

Thanks for the support PAX and for Shady and FMB for bringing FNG’s- Wide Right and Wilson

And Smithers for the opportunity to lead!

Hopefully Moderate at Slow Burn

It’s great to roll into this AO and see so many new faces. It’s encouraging to know we keep growing. Based on that I tried to do a better disclaimer than my normal. I was also a little nervous since I was doing the Ruckover later in the day as well as trying to hit the right level for moderate. But the weinke was set and of f we went.

Mosey over to first parking lot down road to Shutterfly for normal warm-ups. Nothing new or ground-breaking.

  • Split up into 2 groups for Indian Run down to Eternal Church parking lot. Since we were going downhill last man spring to front.
  • Partner up for Lazy Dora.
    • 100 Merkins (P1 does 10 while P2 hold plank, then keep switching to 100).
    • 200 LBCs (P1 does 20 while P2 does 6″ hold, then keep switching to 200).
    • 300 Squats (P1 does 25 while P2 holds air chair, then keep switching to 300).
  • Assemble at one end of parking lot back in 2 original groups. 1st group starts exercise and 2nd group starts after 1st group gets done with 1st exercise.
    • Run to 1st line – 10 jump lunges: run to 2nd line – 10 thrusters: run to 3rd line – 10 merkins: run to end of lot and then back to beginning
    • Run to 1st line – 10 bomb jacks: run to 2nd line – 10 plank jacks: run to 3rd line – 10 seal jacks: run to end of lot and then back to beginning
    • Lunge walk to 1st line – 10 squats: backward lunge to 2nd line – 10 squats: lunge walk to 3rd line – 10 squats: backward lunge to end
    • Run to 1st line – 10 jump lunges: run to 2nd line – 10 thrusters: run to 3rd line – 10 merkins: run to end of lot
  • Stay in 2 groups for Indian Run back to COT. Since we’re going uphill first guy in line drops for 5 merkins then runs to catch end of line and tell next guy to drop.

The run back was maybe a little more than normal for Slow Burn but everybody made it. Tried to use it as a shameless cross-promotion for PAX to post to Clydesdales. There’s always all runner levels there and a great way to get better at running. Always an honor to lead this group of PAX. Thanks Smither’s for the opportunity!

Hopping, crawling, sneaking, and pushing at Laces In

Truth be told, YHC did not consult his work calendar when Lil E asked him to Q Laces In, and he probably would have turned it down had he thought about it. Once committed, there was no excuse to pass it off. Plus, it’s nice to get over to that side of the Fort from time to time.

We had nine total, with Tesh not posting despite requesting a welcome celebration and a couple others bailing last minute because of “sore shoulders.” Nevertheless, the nine faithful and strong pressed onward into the gauntlet.

Warm Up

Long mosey around to the far side of the school, which is really actually pretty close but takes a long time to get to it. There was some butt kicking and high kneeing thrown in before we made a small circle in the square parking lot with the special spots for teacher of the year and whatnot. We did some windmills and Moroccan night clubs, and that was it for the warmup. On to

The Thang

Not having a ton of time to plan, the gauntlet approach seemed best. Set up the course, then let the PAX work through it at their pace. The basic layout was:

  • Start with two-foot hops onto the curb
  • Bear crawl to next curb
  • Incline merkins (hands on curb)
  • V-sits on path on island
  • Derkins at next curb
  • Sneaky gorilla across middle section to next curb
  • Incline merkins
  • V-sits on path
  • Derkins
  • Bear crawl to last curb
  • Run one lap around the inside of the square

Start with 20 hops and sets of 10 incline merkins/10 derkins, then work down the ladder with each pass (18 hops and 9 incline/derkins; 16 and 8, etc.). Always with 5 v-sits per island. If you got through the whole thing, that works out to 110 hops, 110 derkins, and 110 incline merkins, with 100 v-sits and a lot of crawling and sneaking.

I appreciated the symmetry of this workout.

Time was not sufficient for all PAX to complete the workout, especially since Greenwave and Crab Cakes got confused and never climbed down the ladder, doing sets of 10 the entire time. Crazy.

Funhouse handled COT as part of the A$$ Kicking April tour, so YHC checked out.

Thanks to Lil E for the opportunity to lead.

Slippery When Wet

Rain stopped promptly at 5:00 leaving us with nice wet surfaces.

After welcome & disclaimer started with a short mosey over to band practice parking lot. 20 SSH, 20 mountain climbers, 20 flutters, 20 bombjacks, and 20 boxcutters wrapped it up, followed by a short talk about anxiety and digging down to the underlying reasons for it.

We then mosey down to the bottom of US21 entrance for The Thang:

Four stations at each light pole to top of hill. Sequence: 1 > 2 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 4

  • Station 1: 10 burpees
  • Station 2: 20 big boy situps
  • Station 3: 20 Merkins
  • Station 4: 30 Squats
  • Rinse & repeat

Mosey to building entrance, everyone Al Gore while rotating one pax 5 burpees at a time.

Mosey back to football field parking lot for CoT with a reminder that while many times we need to fight our anxieties, sometimes we need to surrender them.

Had a great time leading my VQ, thanks to all who showed up in spite of rain.

Rain, pain and gain at the Fort

At 5 minutes to 6am with no PAX in sight, CableGuy and Bolt wondered if it was going to be a dual beatdown. With seconds to spare, 4 more PAX arrived in the high moisture content morning.

We welcomed back Comeback posting for only his second post, first last fall EH’d by VuVu. Disclaimer was given and we moseyed around the WEP trail.

Taken by CableGuy to the upper parking lot for warmups.  As per his style, cadence proceeded at a pace about 50% faster than most Q’s. We kept up the best we could with SSH’s, ParkerPeters, PeterParker’s, mountain climbers, merkins, squats, seal jacks, …

*** Q’s, always take note of who’s in attendance and that a demonstration/reminder of an exercise may be necessary. ***

Staying in the same lot, we were treated to a beatdown ladder of burpees countdown starting with 10 at one end (to 1), cross lot sprint, and the other end 10 squats each time.

Marylou nicely informed us  it was a total of 55 burpees.

The blood was pumping and the arms were hurting as the rain started to trickle about halfway through.

Before Bolt took the PAX to the field for 5 pain stations, he gave the PAX a few words about our responsibility as men to watch out for and protect the women and girls in our lives. We have been going through a steady stream of news on sexual abuse, assault and domestic abuse.

An easy walk down the hill to catch our breaths before the 5 pain stations which each had their own ‘lanes’ of varying length. 5 starting cones had workout instructions on them and a corresponding turn-around point cone.   A little improvisation with only 6 PAX (expecting 10 or more), we lined up at the cones. Top instruction for one PAX, bottom for other PAX staying at cone.

cone1: top instruction: Run up hill carrying 40# to cone and back/bottom for PAX staying: squats

cone 2: top: Broad jump to corresponding cone and back;  bottom: calf raises

cone3: Sprint to cone and back/ American Hammers w/ 20# or 30#

cone4: BearCrawl to cone and back/ bomb jacks using 2-10# bags

cone5: Lunges carrying 2 sand bags to cone and back/ merkins

We did a final run through of the stations as a group.

Back to COT lot for a few minutes of Mary.

A good push by all PAX.

*** Q’s: Remember to never leave the 6 behind. Remember that we are all at different fitness levels. Be encouraging and positive and supportive.

Bolt finished with his thoughts about it being our responsibility to look out for all the women in our lives: our wives, our daughters, our nieces, our friends, our neighbors. We are seeing bad men do bad things and a lot of men who downplay the problems or don’t speak out against the perpetrators. It is our responsibility to not only protect, but to speak out against the behavior when it occurs. Talk with your women, but especially your daughters. Let them know what good behavior of men should be.

Yeti in 2 weeks.   Reminder about our community involvement in Paradise with our workouts and mentoring/reading sessions.   P200 coming.   Prayers for PAX with sick children and relatives with health issues.

Thanks to Uncle Sam for volunteering to tutor in Paradise

2 for post workout breakfast at The Peach Stand.

*** Final Q tip: After using cones and/or coupons on a rainy day, be sure to not stack cones and leave in car for a few days and dry coupons asap. Stinky!

The BeachBall

Neighbors and police were alerted of a suspicious shadow dropping off cones and a dangerous-looking gray mass onto dark, empty parking lot and then driving off to meet with CEO-looking PAX at Walter Elysha. YHC started giving the disclaimer but Site-Q Bonsai felt insecure about Latino accent and wrong use of words so he took over and messed it all up.  FNG was very confused and the rest, embarrased.

Warm-up

Mosey on running track swinging some Buttkickers (Site-Q alerted YHC that A**kickers is a curse word), high-knees and uphill Karaoke.

Once in COP: SSH – Windmills – MNC – Squats – Doggie paddles – plank and 6-inch keeping mississippi count.

The Thang

PAX were asked to perform Bearpees along ten trees.

-Nine???  Someone complained.  -How do you expect us to bearpee eight trees? There’s no way I’m gonna bearcrawl seven trees.

But in the end pax overcame and did all six trees as originally requested.

Mosey to parking lot next to lady who doesn’t like PAX screaming.  Backwards uphill climb.  At this point attempting to do the pain stations seemed pointless since most PAX were out of breath, so YHC simply introduced the BeachBall (see pic), which PAX bounced around like infants.  LBCs ensued while rotating BeachBall and then the ArmWrestlingRollingCarousel (patent pending) was introduced:  PAX lay flat on their bellies facing each other in two rows, and arm wrestle in manly tension while one reads theme verse (Isaiah 41:10). Then one row rolls over and faces next contendor while new PAX reads verse.  Rinse & repeat until all have read verse (arm switch when first row is done rolling).  Of course, Long Shanks arm-wrestled two at a time in an audacious display of arrogance.

Co-Q Cornhole took over at this point with what was left of PAX, but mercilessly had all bearcrawl downhill on reenactment of Civil War battle but with pinecones.  People’s Chair for all while two PAX graciously jumpjacked  with the sunrise behind, silhoueting the too much barBQ from the night before.  Deconstructed Burpees took everyone by surprise and there was a lotta groaning and destructive chatter.

Derkins, step-ups and dips brought joy back to brave PAX.

Then alternating pull-ups, step-ups and laps around kiddie park.

ABS

Ab-lap where Atticus over-underperformed, making Pusher blush, but he claimed him as Q-school disciple all the same.

FNG was interviewed an named Oz, but YHC missed out on all the cultural references.

PAX were encouraged to not be anxious and prayers were lifted up.

2nd F at Peach Stand in support of community business.  A joyful moment.
