First Post of 2021

What better way to start the new year than with your brothers in the rainy gloom? Well, 4 at Varsity did just that.

Today was really special for several reasons.

It’s F3’s 10 Year Anniversary.  I wonder if DREDD and the other Redwoods had any idea what this would turn into?  In Honor of that, we did the same workout they did on 1/1/2011.

First we started with a little mosey where we talked about who was up the latest and Harry Caray’s smart plan to go to bed, take a nap and then wake back up for the ball drop with his M and 2.0’s.  I’ll have to remember that for next year 😉

Since it’s 2021, our warm-up consisted of 21 reps of SSH, Marocain Night Clubs, Imperial Walkers, and 7 windmills (because we do them really slowly and I couldn’t cadence count 21 windmills).

Then it was a lap around the track and into the Thang.

Run a lap.

10 merkins, diamonds, and wide-arm merkins.  Run a lap.

Shield fell so far behind that we went back to pick up him.  He said he had to stop and tie his shoe to which we all said was a “likely excuse”.

10 knee up dollys (think bring your knees to your chest, back out, apart and back together is 1),  Freddie Mercury’s and LBC’s.  Run a lap.

10 Side Straddle Hops, squat thrusters, and mountain climbers. Run a lap.

Since it rained most of the night and was drizzling most of the morning up to this point, we decided that instead of running up and down the bleachers that were slick to do Jacob’s Ladder, we ran over to the hill by the pull-up bars.   We got an extra burpee in b/c YHC forgot that you have to run to the top first before doing the burpee.  The extra burpee was my NY gift to the group.

Since that only took about 25 minutes, I had to fill some time, but since we were at the pull-up bars, I figured why not.

21 pull-ups followed by 21 squats x2 rounds.

Then it was time to play with Cindy. 10 counts of bent-over rows (each arm), overhead press, goblet squats, curls, and KB swings. 2 rounds.

We finished COT with a discussion of our One Word from last year and this year.

On a personal note, these HIM’s are my SheildLock and were my quarantine workout partners.  I would be in a very different place (and not for the better) if it had not been for these men who I have learned so much from.  I hope I have impacted their lives as much as they have mine.  Here’s to 2021!

Cheers!

Looked Better on Paper

I arrived a bit earlier this morning to scope out some areas of the campus that I have yet to explore.  Eight men showed up on this brisk morning.  We began with a slow mosey around the elementary school parking lot and stopped at the playground for the typical warm-up exercises (SSHs, Windmills, Imperial Walkers, Plank Stretches, Mountain Climbers, Peter Parkers, and Parker Peters.

Next, we moseyed back to the parking lot.  The first series of exercises was a combination bear crawl/squat across the length of the parking lot.  At every other parking space line, we did 10 squats.  Once finished, we did the same routine except we rolled to each line and did 5 merkins.  Lots of complains about dizziness after the first couple spins but we made it through the craziness.

Once the world stopped spinning, we ventured over to the pull up bars (Trucker approved).  We did 10 reps of jump and grab the bar, pull chin over the bar, and hold position for five seconds.  We took a lap around the bus loop to shake out are arms.  Next round was a jump and grab the bar, raise legs up 90 degrees, and hold for five seconds.  Again, another lap.  Last round was a jump up, rotate grip back and forth, and pull chin up over bar.  One last lap around the bus loop and back to COT for a few minutes of Mary.

Great job everyone!  Thanks for trying something new.

Log PT

Disclaimer was spoken and we opened up the truck to grab some logs. These logs are pretty sizable, and range from 100-200 pounds. Two PAX per log.

Move the logs to the grass lot/field behind the church. Set logs down on one end of field. While P1 does circuit below, P2 either shoulder carries log out and back to set point or does end over end log flips. Flap Jack until each partner completes entire circuit. Not a DORA – each PAX does 20 of each movement.

Circuit 1

20 Ruck Thrusters

20 Push ups with side ruck pulls (Ruck at your right side…do a push up and then pull your ruck to the other side with your left arm, push up, then pull it back with your right arm)

20 Ruck Burpees

Breathing intensifies…

Circuit 2

20 OH Squats

20 Squats Ruck up front

20 Ruck Swings

LOG PT

Partner up by height to make the log carry more… fair.

5 Ground to Shoulder each side

10 OH press w/log (alternating shoulders)

10 big boy sit ups w/log

10 log press while on back

Carry/Ruck logs back to COT… toss them into the truck.

Last Minute Mary

25 4 ct flutters w/ruck press

11 4 ct Dollies w/ruck pressed

Ballroom – Last workout for 2020

We had 5 at the Ballroom for a end of year wrap up beat down.  A slight delay due to a mother nature call, brought us into an immediate warmup as we waited for Drop to get situated.  Then we took off for a quick mosey to our first stop to complete the warm-up.  We did a few SSH, Wind ills, imperial walkers, Moroccan night clubs and a couple of other exercises.  Mosey number 2 for the main event.

We started with 3 minutes of merkins – 10, Mtn. Climbers – 15 and 20 shoulder taps.  Keep rotating through until 3 minutes is up.  at the end we did a burpee stack starting with 1,2,3 and so on.  After 3 minutes lap around the parking lot. Next round 10 squats, 15 monkey humpers, 20 calf raises (arms are tired) then nurring around the lot.  Round 3 10-BB Situps, 16-American hammers, 20 flutters. Lap around the lot.  Round 4 10-SSH, 15-overhead claps, 20- Moroccan nightclubs. nurring around the lot.  Short mosey over to the benches for round 5. 10-derkins, 15 dips and 20 step ups. Run to bottom of lot for a few minutes of wall sits.

We had a few short stories to talk about what 2020 looked like and if 2021 is a repeat what would we change.  U-Haul also mentioned the article that Anchorman posted to forget New Year’s resolutions and conduct a past year review instead.  Check it out here

Thanks drop for the opportunity to lead.

Leverage Your Resources

Once upon a time, another man thought enough of you to extend an invitation. They saw something in you that you didn’t see yourself. They recognized that inside the man visible to the rest of the world, was a man invisible to himself; and that invisible man needed to be set free.

I had two men think greater of me than I thought of myself and extend this invitation. These men shared with me something they had found by way of other men extending a similar invitation. Utilizing morning workouts in any number of outdoor locations around town, my eyes were eventually opened to a level of Fitness, Fellowship and Faith I didn’t know I needed, much less, existed. Many of us have had similar thoughts and experiences.

However, that only explains part of it. In hindsight, this seems like the obvious effect of the organization, F3 (f3nation.com). The thoughts I’m sharing with you here are not intended to rewrite “Freed to Lead” or the “QSource,” but there are teachings in each of those books that have helped to shape my thoughts and do show up here. With that, I’d like to share a few of my more recent thoughts about F3 and its impact on me as I’ve journeyed down this path I’m on. In the spirit of sharing and extending an invitation to experience something similar, I’d like to invite you to read through what I’m now comfortable sharing as an attempt to leverage your resources.

Within F3, there are a ton of resources. Resources I’m not sure the founders, Dave Redding (Dredd) and Tim Whitmire (OBT), even considered. Some resources were available from the beginning back in 2011 while others are more recent. Resources like the aforementioned books, Shieldlock, mentor opportunities like Whetstone, countless community and international service opportunities, Bible studies and access to other men around the country who are willing and excited about the opportunity to help a brother whenever possible. I’ve participated and benefited from many of these over the years since I’ve become involved with F3, but it is my more recent comprehension of these resources that has inspired me.

If you’re reading this and have only participated in what we call the 1st F, Fitness, do recognize that you’ve yet to tap into the greatest resources F3 has to offer. We all know that Fitness is not only the most obvious of the F’s, it is also the easiest to talk about and the easiest to address. It is what originally brought you out into the gloom.  To show you how much I care about you, I may “encourage” you to do a few more push-ups or run a little further. After all, that is easy to measure. But it is the opportunities available through the 2nd and 3rd Fs that have brought me to experience even greater growth.

Consider the growth experienced through engaging in a Shieldlock.  Each week I come alongside three other men who consistently hold me to a standard worth living.  Surely, if left to my own devices, it is likely I will negotiate with and eventually convince myself to take the easier more ego driven, path. Something like not apologizing, forgiving or engaging. Something like giving in to a temptation or a frustration. However, when I sit down with 3 other men who know my tendencies, they can read through the façade that many others don’t know exists. This engagement in a Shieldlock as we call it, is a more intentional way to know AND show that I do matter.

Whetstone. This has been an area of struggle for me. The struggle started as the belief that I didn’t have experience or wisdom that another man could benefit from. I imagined the men who engaged in this opportunity to be significantly wiser and even spoke with wise words. In short, I just didn’t see myself in the same realm as those men. What I later learned was that I was prescribing to selfish thought. Selfish to not share my experiences or ideas with another man. Why would I let another man make the same mistakes I made just a few years earlier? I’d hate to know that another man I respected didn’t care for me enough to help me from walking down the same challenging path. While inconsistent at times, I have engaged in Whetstone relationships with blades. It is up to them to determine how this is going.

Here’s one more. How about having the pride to not ask a man who is a few years ahead of you, to be a stone? No thanks, I’m good, I’ll pass. I’m not going to burden him with my baggage. Am I talking to you? Of course, I am. This man, those men, they are all resources for you to tap into. It may take a few times to find the right fit (not the easy fit but the right fit) but don’t give up. Know that another man out there is wondering whether their experience could be valuable to you. I’ve recently become a blade again, after swallowing my pride, thinking I had to have it all together.

Does any of this sound familiar? It now brings me to the 3rd F, Faith. While it’s not about a belief in a specific faith, it is about a belief in something greater than yourself. After all, the world does not revolve around me and I am not the most important thing in this world. The primary development of my faith has not been through F3, but it has surely grown and become more of who I am, through F3. Mission trips, church involvement, Journey groups (influencers.org), leading at home, confidence to talk about my faith and the strength to live out my faith, have all accelerated because of F3.

I’m barely scratching the surface of F3 resources. These are free of charge and open to all of us. Could you imagine if this was available to all men we meet? How much could you sell this for? Or, how much would you pay for this? You know the answers to these questions.

Here is where I’m really struggling. We all know the benefits of the 1st F. I’ve gotten stronger, faster, and leaner. That’s easy for me. What’s harder for me and become the reason for me writing this is how do I share my experiences relative to the 2nd F and 3rd F? How do I share with other men that even if you’re unable to do 30 pushups straight or run an 8 min mile, F3 is still for you and F3 needs you? I believe the next-level impact occurs by truly engaging in these latter 2 F’s. I can’t share this all in a few tweets or Slack posts. I can’t fully share this here in my writing. In the end, I can’t share all my experiences because after all, they are my experiences. You must engage in these other areas, recognize you’re not perfect and you’re not expected to be perfect. Take a step into something you know you need, then you can have your own experiences that make you smile and wonder why you didn’t do so, sooner.

So, you know that guy that used to post a few days a week? That guy you looked forward to talking with after a C.O.T.? That same guy you only see when you’re getting gas, groceries or while at Church? Maybe he didn’t see F3 the same way you do now. Maybe he wasn’t aware of these additional resources. Maybe, just maybe, the time is right now to extend that invitation to get him back out in the early morning and share with him some of your recent experiences. Or maybe its time for you to take a step out and invest in your own growth, because there are resources here for you, waiting to be leveraged. Look to your left and to your right, you’ll find them.

NMM

My pastor posted a message to Twitter yesterday that I found worthy to share.

“God chose to be born as a pauper, not a prince. In a stable, not as a superstar. As a servant, not a celebrity. What does that tell us about how important the Lord thinks humility is?”

In the age of coronavirus shutdowns, celebrities have taken to social media to say, “we’re in this together” from their palatial estates. Their messages have grown stale as people realize how out of touch celebrities are. Their self-absorbed, self-conceit is the exact representation of what we aren’t to be.

We are called to live third – to put God, family, and others before ourselves. When we get the order backwards, we crash and burn. As High Impact Men, we are bound for success. When we succeed, we must remember to stay grounded and stay humble. Keep close to your brothers and keep them in check. Allow them to keep you in line. We are actually in this together.

Aye!

Christmas Dora

Seven men + 1 late snowman (Olaf) showed up for the workout this morning.  We started off with a slow mosey to the back of Just Fresh.

Warm-ups

SSHs x10

Imperial Walkers x10

Windmills x 10

Gun Slingers x10

Next, we partnered up for a few rounds of stair climbs and exercises.  Partner 1 climbed the stairs across from Just Fresh while Partner 2 did the exercises (Carolina Dry Docks, Lunges).

We did two rounds of each exercise and modified the stair climb due to safety reasons.  Some of the steps were covered with water.

Next, we ran to Old Navy and back down the hill to the traffic circle.  The tree in the middle of the circle is decorated with Christmas lights so it was a fitting stop for our Dora exercise.  Partner 1 ran to the top of the parking lot near Old Navy while Partner 2 performed the exercises.  I asked the Pax to think about this week, the holiday, and what it means to each of them while they returned down the hill looking at the Christmas Tree.  Since we had some time, I adjusted the numbers a bit on the Dora.

150  Hand Release Merkins

250  Squats

350  LBCs

Next, we ran to the fountain for a set of step-ups and dips.  We had another time to bear crawl around the half traffic circle with some grumbling from the Pax.

Back to COT.

Great job Everyone!

Today was a workout where I tried harder because I was on Q. Being a leader isn’t just about exhorting acceleration in others or the group; it also forces you to accelerate individually. That was pretty evident to me this morning from my heart rate monitor. All the guys that came out today pushed me to be better. When you’re a follower, are you following in a way that is helping your leaders be better?
