Nickels at the Quagmire

We had 14 Pax show up in the gloom this morning including 1 FNG “Supafly” and the “Return of the Jedi” (I couldn’t help myself) from his foot injury.

I gave a nice disclaimer for our FNG and we took a long mosey around the parking lot while mixing in, shuffle steps, NUR, toy soldiers, butt-kickers, and high-knees, before settling in around the back parking lot behind the fountain that had the stairway access.

Warm-a-Rama

Keeping with the shoulder-burn theme, we circled up for the following:

  • Windmills x 10 IC
  • Plank (2-10 counts)
  • Elbow Plank (2-10 counts)
  • Merkins x 10 IC
  • SSH x 25 IC
  • Plank (10-count)
  • Peter Parker x 10 IC
  • Parker Peters x 10 IC
  • 6″ Plank Hold (2-10 counts)

We recovered and I began explaining the 1st of 3 routines we made it to today, I had at least 1 more nasty one planned, but the last one was so brutal I think the PAX were glad we didn’t get to it.  In any case, I kept it nice and easy to remember, everything was in sets of 5, hence the “Nickels”.

1st routine:

From the center island in the parking lot we performed 5 x True Americans (Hand-release Merkin w/Plank Jack), Bear Crawled up to and then up the steps and across the landing, Crawl Bear down the steps, and Bear Crawled back to the center lot where we did Hydraulic Squats (Squat, right kneed down, left knee down, right knee back to squat, left knee back to squat, rise and repeat x 5).  Then repeated the whole routine x 5.

2nd routine:

Thinking the shoulders needed some rest we did some sprints.  Starting at the back parking island, we sprinted to the top parking lot island (maybe 40 yards), did 5 Burpees, then sprinted back to the start and did 5 Absolution.  This was then repeated 5 more times.  I had some shipping pads laid out for the PAX to keep the elbows safe.

3rd routine:

I wasn’t sure if I was going to do this one going in, but we had an even PAX count so we did it and I think everyone hated it equally so I’m glad we did it.  Anyway, Partner up, and in wheelbarrow position with 2nd PAX holding legs of 1st PAX, 1st PAX performs 5 Donkey Farmers (think Peter Parker with your partner holding your legs).  We then wheelbarrow-walked up to and up the flight of stairs and did 5 Derkins at the top landing.  Recovered and moseyed back to start and switched partners.  Time cut this one a bit short, but I think everyone got in at least 3 sets of this one.  Amazing push by all the PAX, this one was hard.

We made it back to CoT with about a minute left so I asked Jedi to call out an Ab exercise, which was a one-legged V-Up. I think we did 10 of these IC which took us right up to 6:00AM.

Announcements, Praises, Prayers

Jedi’s Post-iversa-Q

You would think that I’d have some sort of snarky intro to open my backblast for my anniversary Q. But, writer’s block. I blame peanut M&M coma. #keepingitclydesdale

YHC was pleasantly surprised when 11 PAX joined me in the gloom for my poorly hyped celebration. I blame the site Q…  Special recognition goes out to Phish, who is in town for the training YHC runs for his job. Poor soul didn’t know he’d be seeing me in the gloom before putting up with me all day. Anyway, the disclaimer was given and we jumped right into our warm-up. SSH, low slow squats, Moroccan night clubs, and windmills were all done in cadence to some forgotten number before we rolled out.

When I was EH’ed a year ago, my very first post was to a running AO. I hate running (shocker, I know), and at that point I hadn’t run in well over a decade. Not intentionally, anyway. Copperfield gets credit for bringing me out, and since he was training for his marathon, we did a lot of running for my first week. So, to commemorate my first post, we went on a run around Rivergate, working out to right around one mile (we cut out the full loop done for pre-runs, which is ~1.6 miles). Final destination: the fountain.

Mini Moleskin 1

My first big takeaway from jumping into this F3 thing was, you have to put yourself out there and do the uncomfortable thing if you’re going to get better. I hate running, but more than that I hate getting vulnerable and walking into a new situation where I may or may not be accepted. The first couple weeks of posting were more of a mental battle, trying to get over myself, step out, and meet some people because, let’s face it, I had no friends. I wasn’t going to make friends by sitting on my six, so I had to do the uncomfortable thing. Like running. Or meeting a group of guys I’d never met before in a dark parking lot in the wee hours of the morning.

Back to the workout…

Next to the fountain were 10 balloons (taped to cones so they didn’t blow away). Inside each balloon was a card with an exercise and a number of reps. Pretty simple here: pop a balloon, the group does the exercise for the given number of reps, then we all run a lap around the parking lot. Originally the run was around the traffic circles, but that got shortened after the second round.

Exercises completed:

  • 100 hillbilly squat walkers
  • 1000 burpees
  • 400 jump squats
  • 700 squats
  • 500 diamond merkins

Reps were evenly distributed among the PAX, but those completing their reps first were encouraged to pick up reps from those still working. As a team, all reps were completed, with probably some extras thrown in for good measure.

Mini Moleskin 2

After surviving the first couple weeks with F3 last year, I realized that this group was special. It’s been years – probably at least a decade, if not longer – since I’ve had a group of guys who are willing to step in and help out in a moment’s notice, with pretty much anything. Guys who are willing to encourage you, push you, or be a total idiot with you. We aren’t in this life alone, and F3 is a tangible example of that reality. We aren’t made to do it alone, so stop trying, get over yourself, and reach out. There are people around ready and willing to help.

Back to the workout…

With just a couple minutes left, we had to get back to COT. We could run (blech), or we could partner carry. Having recently dropped weight through the generosity of food poisoning, I wasn’t as burdensome as I have been in the past. Nevertheless, Witchhunt took one for the team and carried this Clydesdale halfway back. I lucked out in that deal, as he weighs maybe 160 pounds. All PAX gathered at COT for a final word.

Mini Moleskin 3

In addition to having a group of guys around to help out or be an idiot with, the community here goes deeper than that. These guys are willing to step in and carry your burdens when you can’t. We have PAX in our region who have gone through some awful experiences, just in the past year. Watching the community step in and do for them what they can’t do for themselves at their times of greatest need has been incredible. We can carry each other in a workout, but it’s something entirely different to carry each other through the hardest times. It is an honor to be able to be a part of this.

It’s not about the workout. It’s not about ourselves.

It’s about our brothers.

This is why we do it.

And this is why we give it away.

There were announcements. Read your newsletter.

As for prayers, here were a bunch, but the big ones I remember are recent friends and/or family members of PAX who have died of cancer. Pray for those left behind as they mourn the loss yet continue on.

Thanks to all the PAX who posted with me this morning, and for those who didn’t post but have been a part of this journey. It is an honor to get to serve you.

Quagmire: Expected cooler temps but was still Hot Mess!

7 PAX came to the muddy shoreline called Quagmire for a Monday morning kickoff of their week.

Friday YHC Q’ed at Varsity and had 4 sets of exercises to get through and only got through 2, so today we will complete the circuit….almost.

  • Low Slow Squats
  • Merkings
  • LBCs
  • Hill Billy walkers
  • Moracan Night Clubs
  • wide arm merkins
  • Freddy Murcurys

Mosey to the Fountain

  • Derkins-30seconds
  • Box Jumps-60 seconds
  • Dips/Irkins-90 seconds
  • 1 min rest
  • 3 times

Mosey to other parking lot

  • Mtn Climbers-30seconds
  • Leg raises-60 seconds
  • Jump Rope-90 seconds

  • 3 times

Mosey to Home Depot

  • Pullups – 30 seconds
  • SSHs – 60 Seconds
  • Burpees – 90 Seconds

Mosey to Marshals

  • Sprint up Hill and Back
  • 10 Box jumps

COT:

Spoke to the men about “Witnessing” and that it is referenced often in spiritual sense but also in a court of law. Speaking to what you saw, facts of things that have happened. Question and challenge to all us PAX is what are people witnessing about you. Not the Facebook you but the REAL you and who you really are. Can they state the facts of what kind of man you are or is everyone covered in the Facebook facade of you. Facades fade and crumble. Make and impact with the real you and let that be your witness!

Cake Boss out!

Fiststix on Q

It’s been difficult for me to make it over to Quagmire on a consistent basis lately. It use to be my regular Monday morning hangout.  There were several great workout options this morning. It was great to see a good turnout.  After the standard disclaimer, we made our way over to the parking area near Jush Fresh.

COP:  SSHs, imperial walkers, merkins, squats, more merkins, flutters, LBCs

Next, we moseyed to the side of Books A Million for a sidewalk shuffle (plank walk between light poles).  Rinse and Repeat.

More running to the front of vacant Gander Mountain.  We partnered up for a few unique exercises.  The mode of transportation based on the number of hands and feet.

  1.  2 feet, no hands – Partner Carry
  2.  2 feet, 2 hands – Wheelbarrow
  3.  4 legs, no hands – Leg lunges (recovery from wheelbarrow)
  4. 4 hands, 2 feet – one-legged bear crawl

Jedi showed off his skills by walking on his hands….impressive!

Next, we jogged back to Just Fresh for a recovery wall sit while each person ran up and down the stairs.

The final ten minutes were spend running back to Office Depot for 7 minutes of rugby sprints.  We alternated with the following exercises:  CCDs, LBCs, Flutters, Calf Raises, Merkins.

Great job by all! We covered over 2.5 miles this morning.

Prayers:

Healing for family and friends suffering from illnesses

Broga, Tater Special, and Quagmire Handoff

The plan for several months has been for YHC to receive the shovel flag for Quagmire sometime in May. Eventually, the 14th came out as the best option, so it only made sense when the call for a substi-Q went out on Friday that I should rise up to the occasion. Given the recent arrival of two new Monday bootcamps in the region, you never really know how many to expect come 0515. We had a respectable size (with 4 respectable PAX), with 11 posting to what turned out to be a beast of a workout.

(Mostly) full disclaimer given, with promise of no crawling (especially low crawls) and no balls-to-the-walls. Promise was given to start slow, but no promises for the time after the warmup.

Warm-o-rama

Long-ish mosey around Home Depot, behind Target, and out to Books-a-Million.

Rather than the standard exercises, today’s warmup was a couple sun salutations, replacing with the manly F3 names for poses because, well, Broga.

Once warm and limber-ish, we did a short mosey to the fountain for

The Thang

Twelve cones were spaced somewhat evenly around the fountain parking lot, including one cone on each traffic circle. On each cone was an exercise with a rep count. I referred to the workout as the “Tater Special,” as I got the idea from one of Tater’s Qs several months back. Basically, PAX run to the first cone, do the exercise, and return to the start. They then run to the second cone, do the exercise, then the first cone, do the exercise, then back to the start. And so on. Pretty simple. Not super original. But it’s great for PAX who want to push themselves, those who are recovering, and those who are new. Everything was modifiable, and everybody got a good workout. The exercises that were reached (I’m leaving out the ones that weren’t in case I bring this back…):

  • Burpees x 5
  • Jump Squats x 10
  • Merkins x 20
  • Freddie Mercuries x 30 double count
  • Prison Cell Burpees x 5
  • Jumping lunges x 10 double count
  • Diamond Merkins x 20
  • Flutters x 20 double count
  • Breakdancer Burpees x 5

That’s as far as the fastest men got. For those doing the math, that works out to 45 burpees, 80 jump squats, 140 merkins, 180 Freddies, 25 PCBs, 40 jumping lunges, 60 diamond merkins, 40 flutters, and 5 breakdancer merkins, plus over 2.5 miles of running. It doesn’t actually look like that much, but we felt every rep.

Grab the cones and quick, er, modified quick mosey back to COT.

Announcements, etc.

  • Cannoli Run on Saturday, Patriot Run on Memorial Day, if not doing Patriot Run, do the Murph pseudo-convergence.
  • Prayers for MOAB and ChaChing’s Ms, both of whom are fast approaching due dates for baby #3.
  • Prayers for wisdom and discernment, as well as trust and confidence, for, well, all of us.

We handed off the shovel flag after that. DaVinci had some great words; YHC didn’t. No surprises there.

Honestly, though I’m excited to take over as site Q, DaVinci’s are some big shoes to fill. Great leader, quiet and would prefer to sneak by under the radar, he is not one to be underestimated. Loyal, reliable, and solid, all would do well to learn from this HIM. It is an honor to get to follow after him.

Motivation Monday @ Quagmire: by Shakespeare

I had the honor of leading 7 men (1 FNG!) this morning at Quagmire.  The drive in was a bit of a shock as rain drizzled down the entire way.  According to the weather report, rain was supposed to start a bit later in the morning.  I wasn’t much worried about the rain for the workout, but more that some of my writing on paper would smear off and make it a bit harder for us to read the writing on my cornhole bags (more on that later).  But, the Big Man Upstairs was nice enough to get rid of the drizzle and save the smearing for another day.  Note to self: always use ziplock bags… no matter the weather report.

Warmup:

Begin at COT with disclaimer for our FNG and started with some light stretching.  After a day of rest on Sunday (I’m sure many were in the same boat) some light stretching definitely helped to loosen the body up for the work we were about to do.

  • Mosey around Home Depot to Target Parking Lot.
  • Circle up and completed following routine…
  • SSH x20
  • Imperial Walker x10
  • Hillbilly Walker x10
  • Moroccan Night Club x20
  • Mountain Climbers x15
  • Parker Peters x10
  • Merkins x10
  • Honeymooner/Downward Dog x2
  • Warm-up Over… mosey over to Foutain

The Thang:

1st)  Find a bench. Completed the following routine twice….

  • Step Ups x10 each leg OYO
  • 1 Legged Lunges x10 each leg OYO
  • Tricep Dips x10 double count (in cadence)
  • Derkins x10 double count (in cadence)

2nd)  Partner up.  Four Corners with partner.  Exercises written on notecards, duct-taped to cornhole bags (needed something that wouldn’t fly away in the wind… total MacGyver move on my part).  All groups start in center with 5 burpees, run to a corner of the businesses around us.  After completing a corner, return to center for another 5 burpees.  Wash, rinse, repeat until all 4 corners were completed with 25 burpees.  Corner exercises as followed:

  • 50 Seal Jacks (double count)
  • 30 Wide Arm Merkins
  • 50 Flutter Kicks (double count)
  • 50 American Hammers (double count)

3rd) Mosey back over near COT to drop of cornhole bags and find some wall.  Completed the following exercises with same partners.

  1. Partner A) People’s Chair until Partner B) completes 25 squats… switch positions… x 2 (two People’s Chair per partner/50 squats each)
  2. Partner A)BTTW until Partner B)completes 20 Carolina Dry Docks… switch positions… x 2 (two BTTW per partner/40 CDD each)
  3. Bonus Set w/ extra time!  Partner A) People’s Chair until Partner B) completes 20 Monkey Humpers… switch positions… x 2 (two People’s Chair per partner/40 Humpers)

Mosey back to COT

Name-O-Rama followed by the naming of our FNG… Welcome Kenny G!

Announcements:

  • Read your newsletter. Carolina Beer Temple Tuesday!
  • Strawberry Festival, Operation Sweettooth 8K, Whetstone, the usual.

Praise/Prayers:

  • Students/teachers returning to school following Spring Break.
  • Lutefisk’s mother, praise for making into town for Easter, prayers for continued healing as she continues her fight.
  • MOAB for upcoming job interviews this week.
  • NASA… him and the M’s anniversary. (Congrats!)

Takeaways:

  • Thanks DaVinci for the opportunity to Q!  Enjoyed coming up with this routine… hope that the BackBlast isn’t too long (it probably is… my bad guys).  I wanted to push myself with a tough workout to get the week started off on a great note.  I knew going into this one I was going to have to reach deep; the adrenaline from the Q sure helped!  All in all, everyone tallied a couple miles of running in addition to some high numbers of leg, shoulder, and core exercises.
  • Getting close to my 1-year F3 anniversary, I finally got the chance to name my first FNG… looking forward to getting more opportunities to do that!
  • P.S.- Cornhole bags really do work to write down exercises.  DaVinci gave me kudos for the last minute idea.  The next prototype might need a little work in the event that it rains!
