PreBlast – The Swamp – Miles and Smiles

As we enter the new year I wanted to share some information about the future of the Ruck workouts occurring at The Swamp.  First off don’t worry there will be Rucking going on, so take a deep breath!  As more and more PAX look to enter the wonderful world of Rucking, and more importantly the world of GoRuck we need to prepare and train in different ways.

Moving forward for at least the Winter/Spring schedule Fridays at The Swamp will be listed as “Miles”.  What that means is we will be getting back to the heart of what Rucking is about.  We will group up, decide if we want to carry coupons, and head out.  We will move at a 15 minute pace give or take a minute and knock out as many miles as we can in 45 minutes.  If you want to carry a 40lb sandbag on your own, great bring it.  If we want to pass around big mama (my 80lb which really weighs 94) great, if you want to work on alternative holds great,  if we just want to Ruck great.  The options are plentiful but this is a good way for us to prep for events.

Now there is one curveball, the last Friday of the month will be a Ruck Workout.  My aim and goal is to get one of our brothers from Lake Wylie to lead these, as we don’t always have the pleasure of seeing them at GC.

So see you on Fridays, Miles and Smiles

PS – If I’m there I will be Rucking Heavy so feel free to grab the bag, log, cement pipe, water jug, stretcher, cement block, bricks or body at any time!

The Ballroom_ Moon River and some CakeBoss!

6 PAX joined YHC at The Ballroom on this 12 degree morning. We all have a choice and if we think its cold outside, you need to ask yourself what is colder….the temperature or leaving your brother alone at an AO? I know some are sick and injured, but its also the easy choice to stay in the fartsack….I been there. However if you are choosing the easy route each day…..when faced with two tough choices you won’t be prepared. Yes, posting with your brothers in cold, rain miserable conditions…..makes you better prepared. 5 years of this, I can tell you that making the hard decisions and converstations that I don’t want to have but need to have…..have come easier because I posted with my brothers in all conditions.

Enough on that!

Forefeast of the Theophany

10 PAX posted in the arctic air this morning (the Ninth Day of Christmas) after emerging from their warm vehicles. There was some mild griping about the weather and a college football game from the night before. Before our feet froze to the ground, YHC directed a mosey to the WEP playground:

CoP

SSH 27
Windmill (Abe Vigoda style) 18
Imperial Walkers 9
Hillbilly Walkers 9
Mountain Cimbers 9
Plank to Down Dog to Honey Mooner back to Down Dog
Pull-ups (oyo) 9

Mosey to missing drill bit:

CoP

Brief quiz on Theophany that resulted in a lack of correct answers and lead to:
Merkins 9
Low Slow Squats 9
Burpees 9

Mosey to Calhoun St. parking lot

The Thang

Begin w/ 9 bomb jacks (modify to squats if needed)
Run to the center of the parking lot
5 burpees
Run to the end of the parking lot
9 merkins (reserve the right to call hand-release merkins if form is suspect)
Run to center of parking lot
4 burpees
Run back to start

Rinse and Repeat 9 times – (due to time constraints we completed 6-7)

Mosey to CoT for Mary (9 reps of 9 exercises)

1 Love – Flutter
2 Joy – Freddie Mercury
3 Peace – LBC
4 Patience – American Hammer
5 Kindness – Box Cutter
6 Generosity – Monkey Crunches
7 Faithfulness – Big Boy Situps
8 Gentleness – 9 count
9 Self-Control – Catalina Wine Mixer
*Bonus* Stubbornness – 9 Burpees

Naked man moleskin

January 2 is the Ninth Day of Christmas and/or the Forefeast of the Theophany of Jesus Christ. The Theophany, in the orthodox tradition, is the revealing of the divine in Jesus at his Baptism. This date in the more modern tradition coincides with Epiphany, which is the revealing of Jesus as coming to redeem the Gentiles as well as the Jews represented by the Magi.

Some Protestant traditions also celebrate Paul’s nine Fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23 as part of the Ninth Day of Christmas, hence the focus on repetitions of 9. I add a bonus fruit of the spirit, stubbornness. Stubbornness has been a real blessing to my life (and occasionally a source of frustration).

We welcomed FNG, Spay, to the ranks. It is a good sign for a FNG to post in 11ºF (which for the record is -12.2ºC). Welcome to Spay!

This was my VQ. It was an honor to have so many come out and post! Thank to Double D for the opportunity!

Freezing in the New Year

Due to lack of sleep and poor early morning math I was driving like I robbed a bank to get to the Colosseum when I realized I was arriving at 5:00 not 5:15 for some reason..: once there I was able to relax for an eternity and hope at least someone else showed up for the day…

Thankfully 2 somebodies did and we were able to get going, although it did complicate things like “circling up” and “partner up”

-10 Parker Peter

New Year’s at #SwampMire

First off, I’ll let you in on a little secret that you may already know:
If I’m promoting something on Twitter (especially my Q), you should only believe about 60% of the content of the tweet. Problem is, you just don’t know which 60%, so my hope is you’ll show up to find out… That said, the Sodium Borohydride (NaBH4) tweet was ridiculous. If you didn’t see it, trust me, you didn’t miss anything much. In that same tweet, though, I mistakenly referred to Quagmire as The Swamp. Both workouts launch from the same parking lot, so I’d love to blame it on that, but it was IN THE TWEET I REPLIED TO. Meh…Details…

I did make a vague attempt to tie the chemistry to the “One Word” convergence coming up on the 12th. NaBH4 is used as a reducing agent for aldehydes and ketones, and one of the words I’m trying on right now for 2018 is “Reduce” or “Simplify”… I know… a long stretch and an obscure reference… you’ll live.
I was a Chemistry minor in Undergraduate… Despite Crash’s Dad failing me in Chem 102 my Sophomore year. But, that’s a long story, best shared on the road in a white van whilst running a 200 mile relay or something… What were we talking about…? Oh yeah… the workout…

We’ve all heard of Dora 1-2-3… No good to start a New Year, so, I modified it to a Dora “Oh-Why-Me?” Here’s how it went:

Warm up:
Mosey to larger traffic circle
Windmills x 10
IW x 10
Mosey to next traffic circle:
Weed Pullers x 10
Moroccan Nightclubs x 10
MC x 15
Mosey to front of Books-A-Million:
Parker Peters x 10
SSH x 15

Then on to the “Dora, oh why me?” – A Pyramid of hate

You and your partner:
Partner 1 runs (roughly 75 yards down, then back)
Partner 2 does the exercises:
100 Burpees
200 Jump Squats
300 Merkins
400 Flutters
300 CDD
200 Squats
100 Makthar N’Diayes
Mosey back to the flag for some Mary
COT
——————
NMM:
We didn’t make it all the way through the exercises. It was cold… Also, that was a lot of freaking exercises. QBert and Geronimo were the Kings of the day and they managed to get through most (actually, I think all?) of the squats. The rest of us petered out in Carolina Dry Dock Land… which is a lovely place… I think Jedi has a Summer home there…

Helmet, Out.

A Visit to the Memorial Gardens

Five men showed up for a post holiday beatdown on a chilly Wednesday morning.  After a brief disclaimer, we headed over to the side of the school for the following warm-up exercises:

SSH x 20

Windmill x15

Imperial Walker x 20

Moroccan Night Club x20

Next, we moseyed to the Tega Cay Memorial Garden for a quick dedication ceremony.  Several months ago, I ordered a brick to honor my grandfather’s service in the Navy.  He had a very big impact on my life when I was young.  He taught me how to be respectful and how to work hard for the things you value and the ones you love. He was physically active and a competitor at every sport he played.   He was a man of faith and always cared about helping others.  He passed away  when he was 99 year old so it was only right to honor him with 99 merkins.

We then ran over to the bottom of the outside theater for a burpee ladder.  At each level, we did burpees (5, 10, 15) and ran down the bottom for bomb jacks.  After a ten count rest, we made our way to the front of the school for leg lunges and squats between the columns.

Next, we ventured to mini track for alternating run/plank and ab exercises.  One person ran around the track while the others planked until the last person completed their run.  The next round was a run/LBC combination.

We finished off with balls to the wall along the columns in front of the school.

Great job by all!

The launch of Pathfinder

  • QIC: SkateOrDie
  • When: 01/02/2018
  • Posted In: The Fort

What started as a need for an accountability partner and an option close to home has morphed into a weekly run group bouncing week to week through different neighborhoods along Dobys Bridge Road. That run group has grown and is ready for its next transformation. We are excited to announce the launch of “Pathfinder”, a new running AO, on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. This Tuesday morning run group is open to the PAX of F3 (and FNGs!) and will launch at 5:15 each week from the location of the Q’s choosing. We typically run between 4-5 miles, but vary that based on location and the PAX present.

Message me on Twitter for details @SkateOrDieF3.

Sandbag bootcamp

Mosey around the parking lot with toy soldiers and butt kickers.  Then circle up for SSH, honey lookers, morrracan night club and to finish off the warm-up 5 burpees.

After the warm-up YHC had all the Pax grab the sand bags and move down to the football field where we did the following with a partner.

Start at one end zone and move down the field by throwing the bag.  Do one merkin after each throw until reaching the 10, then add one merkin for every 10 yds.

Second exercise: Pax 1 – monkey humpers,  Pax 2 walking lunges to the 10.  Switch every 10 yds.

3rd exercise: Both pax grab one side of the sand bag and walk to the 10.  Curl and press up. (+1 for every 10 yds)

4th exercise: team up with another group and team one will run with sand bag between them to the end zone and back.  Other team is doing American Hammers until they get back.  Switch

5th exercise: Pax 1 – CDC, Pax 2 overhead carry for 20 yds.  Switch and keep moving to end zone

After completing last exercise we ran out of time so we moseyed back COT.  It was a pleasure to lead and I appreciate all the Pax that showed up and willing to try something new.
