20-18s Word of the Year at The Tomahawk

Backblast is late, but the words needed to be shared. The PAX brought forth their words for 2018 throughout the workout and shared why they picked it, and we are all there for encouragement. Continue to ask your brothers what their word is and how they are progressing. Lend an ear, hand, and offer encouragement as we will all have set backs.

We did a mosey around the school for a warmup with a COP halfway through. Once back to the parking lot we got to work with 20 reps on the right side pillars focusing on upper body and 18 on the left pillars focusing on the lower. We started on the outside and worked our way towards the center. At the center few we closed out with abs.

Thanks for the opportunity to Q Polaroid.

Looking like roosters at The Coop

The night prior, the kids were giddy with school closure glee. The anticipation of snow, whether it would accumulate or not, had us PAX feeling like little kids the night before Christmas. Would I be able to make it? Who else will show? I do not want to let my brothers down, so I will set the alarm and brave what lies ahead. These are all thoughts that we have each and everyday. What is it that keeps us coming back? That may be different for each and everyone of us, but I do not it does involve the brotherhood and the bonds we form in the gloom. How do we form those bonds? Is it by all three F’s…yes, but I think it has to do with pushing yourself and getting the satisfaction of seeing you can still do “it”, but even more so, it is seeing your brothers go through the same challenges. You know what your brothers are going through, there is a shared understanding, which is what gives us all common ground no matter your background, upbringing, challenges that are currently in your path, we know that when we are they together, pushing one another, we all get better together.

16 of us were there mulling around, some taking the BEYOND pill, others thinking that they were making an “easy” choice maybe, were in for pushing themselves with either decision, to push themselves on this snow day.

7 of us took off for a dynamic warmup of mosey, high knees, butt kickers, lunges with a twist, and a COP. When the main dish was revealed, we knew it would be tough, we knew it may not be fun, but we did know we would need to push each other.

Main course. The Michigan.

10 x 100 yard dash – Then 10 reps each of Merkins, Squats, Dying Cockroach
9 x 90 yard dash – Then 9 reps each of Merkins, Squats, Dying Cockroach
8 x 80 yard dash – Then 8 reps each of Merkins, Squats, Dying Cockroach
***** progress to the end in the same sequence
1 x 10 yard dash – Then 1 rep each of Merkins, Squats, Dying Cockroach

That was a fun, hope you all enjoyed it!

Mosey to COT.

Close out with prayers.

More Running, Less Bootcamp

#HypeTrain rolled into the #LacesIn Station once again.  This time it was a family affair with #SPEEDFORNEED coming south to join forces as well as #LacesOut (#F3RunClub) (#Yogging (soft J)) converging with the Bootcampers for 45 minutes of …..well lots of running.  The irony was not lost on YHC (the artist formerly known as Mountain Buffalo) as he gave up the ‘running for an extended period of time’ thing years ago.  Vowing never to return.  Yet his own Q hijacked by nothing more than simple running.  At the very least YHC squeezed in a couple of merkins (only for #Rooney’s sake) and taught everyone what an “updown” was – seriously?  Who doesn’t know what an updown entails?!?  It’s even in the gawl-dang name.  YHC digresses.  Here is what happened:

Little Baby Jog to the football field (so cushy – so soft).

Dynamic Warmup

High Knees, Butt Kickers, Side Shuffles, Toy Soldiers, Toe Touches, Long Strides, Power Skips (Trademark: WWLs).

Then merkins (Rooney!!!)  and windmills to straighten everyone out.

Time to Bootcamp:

Partner up and size kinda matters for very confusing sequence.

UpDown – Partner Push – Run to Opposite Side of Field – UpDown – Partner Push

Repeat this every 20 yards as you move down the field to the endzone and then go back down to the other endzone.

(This was a rugby (shocker – I know) simulation – expend energy – sprint – get on the ground – get back up – expend more energy – sprint again – then repeat.  While it was unorthodox and confusing to some – it was a smoker.)

Rinse and Repeat with 2 updowns before each partner push.  Another smoker.

Give me a ten count.

Hey – let’s breakout the running chairs and do some sprints!!!  Tolkien was nice enough to give us all a quick tutorial about how they work.  We split into teams and relayed around the track with weights.  Then we got on the field and chased the chairs for 100 yards – over and over and over and over and over again.  Then some (small) pax jumped in the chairs and they got pushed and the rest of us chased for 100 meters over and over and over and over again.  Okay – enough running!!!  Back to the field.

YHC went back to one of his favorites – the extra long bear crawl.  This time – 100 yards.  Crowd pleaser!

We worked our way back with some rugby sprints (could not resist).

Ended with a little bit o mary then ran the chairs back to COT.

Great time out there among so major #HIMs and it’s always an honor to lead.  YHC saw a tweet asking for more “SERVICE” to our community from F3Nation.  No better example of pure SERVICE then Tolkien.  The amount of time/energy/passion/service this man brings to #SPEEDFORNEED is incredible.  Follow his lead in 2018 – get out there – get uncomfortable – and serve others!  Aye!

The Hive 2017.49

So… my personal computer fried a month or so ago, and I haven’t wanted to type all this on a phone keyboard.  So, I now have a real keyboard again, hence the backblast.  So below what went down.

3x3x3 – 3 sets of 3 rounds of 3 exercises… my favorite. aka a “one-niner”… cause it’s nine exercises total.

After the token SSH warmup…

Al Gore, Hillbilly walker, jump squat.
Russian Twist, Freddy Mercs, 6 in hold into a flutter.
Shatch, clean/squat/press, tricep ext.

Al gore, Al gore calf raises, 1L deadlift. till time (2 rounds)

And that’s the game.  I also rambled about my near death experience that got me out here.

There 5 HIM waiting to push some speed for need chairs but Dark Helmet went AWOL.

Gave the disclaimer and did a standard warmup.

The thang:

Start in the upper left corner of the parking lot do 10 Merkins then run to the middle of the parking lot and do 20 squats. After we ran to the far end of the parking lot and did 10 LBCs. Repeat the whole way down the parking lot, doing the same exercises on the same sides of the parking lot.

After we happened upon the pull up bars. We held a wall sit while one person did five pull-ups and we went down the line. Rinse and repeat.

Next we did the same thing but did 15 squats while holding the wall sit. Rinse and do one more set with pull-ups.

Next we lunge walked halfway down the hill towards the elementary school. Called upon Band Camp for an exercise which he called out the Wolverine. Lunge walked halfway up the hill and did two more sets of wall sits and pull ups.

Head back towards COT for some Mary.

Thanks to Sugar Bug for the opportunity to lead. After this leg workout, I’d wish my hamstrings would’ve snapped off my legs.

Changing of The Guard- Ranch Style

When checking in with the scheduled Q that was suppose to bring todays beat down, and he said he needed to call in a relief. YHC took it as an early Christmas present. Not only was I able to Q today I also got to hand off the shovel flag to a true HIM. It has an an honor to get to spend the last year leading on of my favorite AOs in all of The Fort, but also to be as excited to give it to Jiffy. He will only make this site even better.

We started off the morning with cars pulling in all the way up to the disclaimer. It was brief but to the point. All PAX knew to give what they could. Dig deep it will only hurt for 45 minutes. So they thought.

Start with easy mosey throwing in some high knees, butt kickers, karaoke.

Circle up SSHx20, IW x 15, windmills x 15, monkey humpers X15, Peter parkers x 10, 6 inches and hold x 2.

mosey to picnic benches dips in cadence x10 followed by derkins x10 for 3 sets.

change to legs 10 squat box jumps, 10 calf raises X3 sets

mosey to wall keep legs burning by doing 20 second wall sit.

Mosey to back of school. Partner up for DORA 1-2-3.

Partner 1 runs loop, Partner 2 merkins, squats, flutters.

Mosey to playground- 5 pulls ups 10 big boy sit-ups, 4 pull ups 8 big boy sit-ups down to 1.

Max set of pull ups.

Mosey to entrance 5 trees lunge walk to first, broad jump to second, bear crawl to third, squat walk to forth, and reverse lunge to fifth.

go back with lunge walk sprint, lunge walk sprint.

Mosey to COT. 1 min ab work.

Hand off Shovel Flag to Jiffy.

Announcements- Joe Davis Jan 6, Convergence this Saturday tega cay elementary 0600 5k/10k.

Prayers and praises for family’s coming and going out of town.

It has been a pleasure to serve the Ranch, the PAX and look forward to another leadership roll in F3.

Backdraft out…

The G.R.I.N.C.H. Posts to Colosseum

18 pax showed up at Colosseum to steal Christmas back from the GRINCH.  Though not a regular at this AO, YHC jumped at the chance to pinch-hit for Pusher.  And being so close to Christmas, it’d almost be a sin to not have a Christmas theme.

Fresh out of Christmas workout ideas (see Alcatraz backblast from 2 weeks ago), YHC took to backblasts from other regions and found a Grinch theme workouted posted in F3GSO. T-Claps to GSO’s CHiPS and WoJo for the idea.

Disclamer was delivered as a few pax were coming in hot.  25 SSH allowed them time to catch up.

Warm-up

We ran a bit, then stopped for 5 burpee broadjumps and a few toy soilders.

Moseyed some more (in the general direction of 160), stopping at various times for warm-up exercises, including:

  • Squats
  • Peter Parkers
  • Seal Jacks
  • Moroccian Nightclubs
  • Windmills

Our run end in the Velux parking lot.  A few pax tried to claim we were at Golden Corral (sarcasm, perhaps?).  On the hill of the parking lot, 3 stations were set up:

  • Bottom of the hill was an orange cone, representing “Whoville”.
  • Mid-way up the hill was a green cone
  • At the top of the hill was a lantern with this sheet:

GRINCH

To summarize, pax were to do the exercises, run down the hill, stop halfway for 5 squats, run the rest of the way and do 5 LBCs, then run backwards up the hill, stopping halfway for 5 monkey humpers.  Once returning to the top, pax planked up for the 6 before starting the next round.

Exercises were cumulative, so pax had to repeat all previous exercises for each round.  A smattering of #mumblechatter ensued when pax learned 30 HR Merkins would follow 25 CDDs.

We wrapped up with about 12 minutes left, so we headed back, with Jekyll (who ran to the WO from home) Larry Bird’ing most of the way back.

We stopped at a parking lot on the edge of campus and effectively did a lap of alternating bear crawls and lunges, with a couple segments of crab walks.

Finally we ran to where we had done the initial burpee broad jumps, and finished out with the same.

Moleskin

Great job by the pax.  Seems like we put on more miles than a typical bootcamp, and with some hills, yet the 6 was never far behind.  Prayer requests at COT:

  • For Trucker’s neighbor
  • For Orange Crush
  • For Fratboy’s friend
  • For Stang

Milkshakes at Tomahawk

I love a good Twitter Storm… a little chatter and we had a pretty strong showing for a Monday. Milder weather probably didn’t hurt anything either… Let’s get to it:

Warm up lap around the outer loop of the parking lot

Circle up in middle of lot:
10 x windmill
10 x merkins
10 x squats
15 x SSH
10 x Moroccan Nightclubs

Grab your bell and go around school to small back parking lot.

AMRAP is the name of the game today… As Many Reps As POSSIBLE… You define possible for yourself, but I 100% promise you are capable of more than your mind thinks you are.

Very simple… 40lb. Sandbag is hoisted on to a Pax shoulders, and he runs about 150 yards down and back. This man is the timer. Do the exercise on the cone until the sandbag runner gets back, then rotate to the next cone.

Cones:
Curls
Goblet Squats
KB Front Hold
Flutters with press
Clean and press (L then R)
KB Swings
Around the World (or Slingshot)
REPEAT

NMM:
If you want to know what’s in a man’s head, watch his actions for a bit… We will eventually always betray what is inside us. I had hard work on the mind over the last few days, so I attempted to bring it to the Pax. After a couple rounds, though, I think I had quitting on my mind… I gave some inspiring blah, blah, blah at the start about working hard and how we were going to do as many reps as POSSIBLE, and how we should push and so on and so on… I ran fast when it was my turn… I lifted the heavy things… but I didn’t do it with the intensity and purpose that I knew I should/could have… I keep saying, “The hard work of this world will not be done by weak men.” I know it’s true, but I think I’m not even close to strong enough yet. Fortunately, I don’t have to be yet.

Helmet, out.
