Shaolin inspired gear at The Tomahawk

Last Tuesday YHC’s phone made a strange noise, which I found was created by Polaroid, who wrote, “Are you ready and willing to Q The Tomahawk this Wednesday?”  Well, I’d been wondering for a while when I’d step up for my VQ, and that certainly made it easy to decide.

We started off with a quick mosey about the parking lot, followed by SSH, windmills, and a delightful exercise that I’ve been doing for over a decade which is called open tee position.  Everyone steps their right leg over their left so that the legs are crossed and your feet are about should width apart.  Then you sink down until your six is a few inches above the right ankle.  About 90% of your weight is now on your right leg which is bent at < 90º.  The left knee is hovering about an inch above the ground, and the left foot is out to the right, resting on the ball of the foot, ankle up.

So you hold that for 5-10 seconds, work up some shaking legs, then slap your hips as you straighten up, turn around and sink so your weight is on the left.  5-10 seconds   Do this 3-5 times each leg.

After the warmup we hit the six stations.  We got through three rounds of masculine singing (grunts and growls).  Below are the stations with the odd gear’s exercise explained as best I can.

  1. BYO Kettlebell Woodchoppers x10/ea
  2. Box jumps x10 (box dimensions: 20″x24″x30″)
  3. Black Iron Staff (6′ long ~ 15lbs)
    1. One hand rotations x10/ea – Holding the staff horizontally with arm extended to the front, gripping the middle, fully rotate to the left and right, using your wrist to break and overcome the momentum
    2. Drop and lift x10/ea – Holding the staff vertically with arm to the front,  allow the top of the staff to drop to be parallel with the ground and use wrist strength to bring it back to fully vertical
    3. Drop and lift x10/ea – Holding the staff parallel to the ground, arm straight up (above the head), the long end of the staff extended behind the body, allow it to drop to vertical behind you and use wrist strength to pull it back to parallel with the ground
  4. Bean bag o’ pain – (~9″x9″ canvas bag with ~25lbs of steel BBs)
    1. The same for all three rounds, hold the bag with one arm as far away as you can from your body, gripping it by its side (so you’re looking at a square). Toss it up a bit and catch it with your opposite hand, using only the fingertips, letting the tossing hand drop.  This gets awkward because the BBs get out of the way and you have nothing to grip after a second.  Repeat this x10/ea arm before dropping it to the ground and growling in victory.
  5. Training Mace (10lb head)
    1. I like to call them Conan swings x10/ea- Holding the mace upright with right hand on top, do a full rotation above the head and strike out to the left.  Left elbow up, right is down.  Rotate back over the head and strike right, now the right elbow is up and the left elbow is down.  Switch hands and form for the other ten.
    2. Barbarian Squats – Holding the mace with hands together, resting behind your head like chopping wood with a maul, swing it over your head into a good squat, stopping with the mace upright and balance.  I like to switch my grip and do 10 with each hand on top
    3. Spears 10/ea – Or “Bayonet!”, standing with the mace, stab out like it’s a big old spear, holding it out for a two count.  Put your body into it
  6. Kettlebell Swings – Geronimo offered to leave his 50 at station six, we all got a taste

After the first two rotations we stopped to sing the chorus, which like any good song, changes slightly every time.

  1. On the six
    1. Gas Pumps x10
    2. LBCs with one leg crossed over the other x15/ea
  2. On the six
    1. Windshield Wipers x15 – Bell in your hands, rotating opposite
    2. Windshield Wipers x15 – Bell in your hands, rotating opposite
  3. On the feet
    1. Imperial Walker
    2. (blanking.. Hillbilly walker?)

With a few minutes left and the third rotation complete, we headed back to COT for some forearm stretching, announcements, and prayer.

Thanks again Polaroid for the opportunity to VQ on your turf.

Monday groaning

11 turned it up for a Monday at Armory to do 30 minutes of continuous pain stations including:

Curls, Squats, Shoulder Presses, Flutter Kicks, Kettle Bell swings, Merkins, Big Boi Situps, Snatch/Presses and Around The Worlds.

We also Passed The Duitchie so each could get a taste of what the other was carrying.

We touched on the word of the month, Present, as in being present to God’s will, then your family, and then others. Be present in the moment when God is asking you to do something. Be present for your spouse (and I’m speaking to myself!)

Aye!

4 Quarters plus some Overtime at the Hive

12 Pax arrived at the Hive for a kettle bell beatdown by YHC and a VQ from Cyclops. Funny how this happened…Cyclops has been a The Fort regular for some time most notably at the running AOs. In the last year, he has been posting to more of the bootcamps and KB workouts as well. YHC has noticed and voluntold him to join for a VQ at the Hive.

Planning the Hive with Cyclops brought back so many great memories from when I first posted at The Fort back in 2012. When given my first opportunity to Q a workout, I honestly could not sleep the night before. I actually still have that problem today. It is honor to lead the men of The Fort and I am humbled by the opportunity. YHC could feel that same vibe from Cyclops and he did not disappoint.

12 pax assembled for a 3 Alarm Fire led by YHC.

Christmas In June – Footloose Breakdance Style

I saw my opportunity and took it. Beacon offered up the lead this week for Footloose and I had an evil plan in mind. It had been a while since I q’d a 12 Days of Christmas fun fest, probably since last Christmas if not beyond so I quickly found a list and checked it twice.

As with the equally evil song The Twelve Days of Christmas, you repeat each exercise just like you repeat each gift until you have covered all twelve. In this case no singing off key was required.

The Thang went something like this:

1-Run around the church building
2-Turkish getups
3-Jump squats
4-LBCs
5-Diamond Merkins
6-Imperial Walkers
7-Rosalitas
8-Slow flutters
9-Low slow squats
10-Lunges (ten each leg)
11-Merkins
12-Burpees

Sadly we ran out of time and we made our way back to COT and hit round eleven. I’m sure noone is sad we missed out on twelve burpees. Especially me.

It’s a simple you v you style workout, and I hope it made you get a little stronger and sweat a little more, I know I was sore today the more I sat at work today.

I hope what I shared about money will make you think as well. We have so much and are so blessed in many ways. What are you doing to make a difference and impact your world?

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

DT out.

Less Planning = More Pain

Somehow, it slipped YHC’s radar that today’s Golden Corral Q fell on him. Nevertheless, when this truth was brought to light 8 hours before launch, frantic efforts were made to plan SOMETHING. Six PAX joined YHC to learn what happens when little time is spent planning a beatdown. Here’s what we did…

Mosey 1½ times around the parking lot, including side shuffles, knees-to-chests, and toy soldiers before circling up in front of O’Reilly Auto Parts next to the bank. Following a quick warmup of the standards (SSH, windmill, low slow squats, and merkins), we moseyed around to the newly paved hill into the newly built apartment complex behind the Teeter.

The Thang

Beginning at the bottom of the hill, PAX will complete a certain number of burpees, run to the top of the hill, perform exercise on sheet taped to cone, run down the hill, more burpees, back up, etc. The breakdown of exercises:

  • 10 burpees at the bottom, 100 LBCs at the top
  • 9 burpees at the bottom, 90 squats at the top
  • 8 burpees at the bottom, 80 merkins at the top (crowd pleaser, this one)
  • 7 burpees at the bottom, 70 Freddie Mercuries at the top (double count)
  • 6 burpees at the bottom, 60 monkey humpers at the top
  • 5 burpees at the bottom, 50 pseudo planche merkins at the top
  • 4 burpees at the bottom, 40 dying cockroaches at the top (double count)
  • 3 burpees at the bottom, 30 hillbilly squat walkers at the top (single count)
  • 2 burpees at the bottom, 20 breakdancer merkins at the top (single count)
  • 1 burpee at the bottom, 10 v-sits at the top

38 Special didn’t get the memo on the descending number of burpees and proceeded to do 10 burpees each round until probably round 4 or 5. There’s always one who doesn’t get it, but good for him for doing the harder thing.

All PAX picked up the six and finished with a mosey to COT, arriving at exactly 0600. For being poorly planned, this turned into a perfectly timed workout.

Announcements:

  • PAINtheon Games, 13.June.2018, 0500
  • Hog and Coyote V, 16.June.2018, 0500 ruck, 0600 everybody else
  • Sweati, sometime in July, details generally lacking

Prayers and praises:

  • CAH – pray for the kids, the workers, the volunteers, and praises for the opportunities we’ve had to pour into them
  • Drummond and his family are handing two foster children over to their forever family this weekend. Prayers for the transition – the good parts, and the hard parts.
  • Per Drop Thrill, Donut Hole is being deployed again, so prayers for him and his family in the weeks/months ahead. (I never thought I’d type a sentence starting with “Per Drop Thrill, Donut Hole…”)
  • Prayers for all the PAX who are injured and for those looking for jobs (or otherwise “funemployed,” as Homebrew called it).

An honor to lead, even if unexpectedly.

The Coop: Mixed Meters

24 PAX gathered in the gloom. The summer numbers bump is upon us. Can we stick with it when it is 10° again??

The Thang: Lots of mixed (non-4) counts

Mosey around the main parking lot covering as much ground there as possible in a zigzag pattern. Alternating High Knees, Butt Kickers, and Karaoke.

Mosey to the band practice lot
SSH x30
1 Burpee
Windmill x10
2 Burpees
Imperial Walker x15
3 Burpees
Hillbilly Walker x15
4 Burpees
LSS x15
5 Burpees
(It took until the Hillbilly Walkers for Longshanks to realize I was copying one of his warmups. Imitation is the highest form of flattery…..why fix it if it ain’t broken?)

Mosey to traffic circle COP
Alternating:
Down Dog and Honeymooner
Plank
Shoulder Taps x10
Yogi Squats

Mosey to Pull Up Bars at ROTC Building
Split into groups of 3s (CSPAN made a French joke and the PAX did 9 Burpees in cadence)
Rotate partners through Derkins, Pull ups, and Wall Sits. Called up and down for each exercises. Did about 6 slow pull ups per PAC.

Mosey to Elementary School parking lot
Partner up for alternating Mike Tysons and Bear Crawls from island to island through the parking lot.

Mosey back towards COT with a lap around the basketball court.

At COT:
Around the Worlds (12 count lunges) x6
Flutters x15
LBC x15
Catalina Wine Mixer x2 (hit 6 o’clock)

NMM:

As PAX, we regularly challenge ourselves physically in the gloom. Leaving the comfort of the fart sack to push ourselves and get better. But how often do we challenge ourselves mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Often with these challenges we don’t have to wake up and head to the gloom; they come our way without us seeking.

How do we respond to emotional challenges presented in the form of a four-year-old trying to situate their sock perfectly when it is time to go? Or mentally when there’s a civic challenge that needs to be addressed? Or spiritually when were faced with our own demons?

Addressing and improving physically is a wonderful thing, but we as PAX must strive to better ourselves emotionally, mentally, and spiritually as well. Otherwise we are always out of balance.

Hopefully Moderate at Slow Burn

It’s great to roll into this AO and see so many new faces. It’s encouraging to know we keep growing. Based on that I tried to do a better disclaimer than my normal. I was also a little nervous since I was doing the Ruckover later in the day as well as trying to hit the right level for moderate. But the weinke was set and of f we went.

Mosey over to first parking lot down road to Shutterfly for normal warm-ups. Nothing new or ground-breaking.

  • Split up into 2 groups for Indian Run down to Eternal Church parking lot. Since we were going downhill last man spring to front.
  • Partner up for Lazy Dora.
    • 100 Merkins (P1 does 10 while P2 hold plank, then keep switching to 100).
    • 200 LBCs (P1 does 20 while P2 does 6″ hold, then keep switching to 200).
    • 300 Squats (P1 does 25 while P2 holds air chair, then keep switching to 300).
  • Assemble at one end of parking lot back in 2 original groups. 1st group starts exercise and 2nd group starts after 1st group gets done with 1st exercise.
    • Run to 1st line – 10 jump lunges: run to 2nd line – 10 thrusters: run to 3rd line – 10 merkins: run to end of lot and then back to beginning
    • Run to 1st line – 10 bomb jacks: run to 2nd line – 10 plank jacks: run to 3rd line – 10 seal jacks: run to end of lot and then back to beginning
    • Lunge walk to 1st line – 10 squats: backward lunge to 2nd line – 10 squats: lunge walk to 3rd line – 10 squats: backward lunge to end
    • Run to 1st line – 10 jump lunges: run to 2nd line – 10 thrusters: run to 3rd line – 10 merkins: run to end of lot
  • Stay in 2 groups for Indian Run back to COT. Since we’re going uphill first guy in line drops for 5 merkins then runs to catch end of line and tell next guy to drop.

The run back was maybe a little more than normal for Slow Burn but everybody made it. Tried to use it as a shameless cross-promotion for PAX to post to Clydesdales. There’s always all runner levels there and a great way to get better at running. Always an honor to lead this group of PAX. Thanks Smither’s for the opportunity!
