3 Strong showed up this morning to NAFO to join me as we Rucked through a Board of Pain workout with a little word on Empathy.

The disclaimer was given and the Warmup (all IC) began as follows:

15-Low Slow Squats, 30-Moroccan Night Clubs, 15-Imperial Walkers, 15-Windmills, 10-Merkins, 10-Peter Parker Peters.

THE THANG

We then rucked over 2×2 to the NAFO marching band practice field where the Board of Pain was waiting. I asked the men to partner up (size and speed do not matter). After partnering up I explained the workout. The men were to go down the Board of Pain that was split up in two columns. One partner performed the exercise in one column while the other performed the exercise in the other column. Then they were to flip-flop. If you arrrived at the bottom of the of the BOP the partners were to rinse and repeat. The exercises are below:

Round 1 – Merkins/Lunge Walk-30 Yds.

Round 2 – Carolina Dry Docks/Toy Soldiers-30 Yds.

Round 3 – Ruck Curls/Side Shuffle-55 Yds.

Round 4 – Tricep Extensions/Karaoke-55 Yds.

Round 5 – Overhead Presses/Run-100 Yds.

Round 6 – Flutter Kicks/Lunge Walk-30 Yds.

Round 7 – Ruck Swings/Toy Soldiers-30 Yds.

Round 8 – Sumo Squats/Side Shuffle-55 Yds.

Round 9 – Ruck Thrusters/Karaoke-55 Yds.

Round 10 – Burpees/Run-100 Yds.

We went through this routine for one round just as we ran out of time. We rucked 2×2 back to the COT and had 30-seconds until 0600 so we performed a plank for 3-seconds.

Great work this morning making it completely through the entire board. It was great getting to know each of you a little more.

NAKED MOLESKIN

As stated above, I spoke a little on Empathy during the middle of the workout for a rest period. For us to be empathetic we have to put ourselves in others shoes. We can only do this by completely understanding that person’s situation. When Jesus came to this world, he completely understood our situation. He humbled himself from a place that was Holy to a place that was full of sin. He knew that we needed a Savior and understood that because He lived in this world. How can we as men have empathy without understanding? We can’t. We must be vulnerable, and search for opportunities to understand others to be empathetic towards them.

Philippians 2:8 – And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Pre-Blast: A Letter to My F3 Lancaster Brothers

To my F3 Lancaster brothers who have been struggling lately,

I have only a few rules for my life. I could probably add a couple more, but these are essential:

  1. Do my best to love God and try to realize He loves me, just as I am, not as I think I should be.
  2. Do my best to love my wife and kids by decisively making choices, every day, to do the little things that will eventually add up to mean something significant.
  3. If I’m going to do something, do it right the first time. When I don’t get it right, own it and make it right.
  4. Accept responsibility for failure; lavish praise for success.
  5. Honor our Nation by remembering and celebrating those who have protected her.
  6. Finally, never quit on a hill.

I’ve failed a time or two at all but my last one. I never quit on a hill – ever! My speed might slow, I might limp as my sprint turns to a jog, but I do not quit. I do not walk. I do not stop.

Before jacking my back up, I used to be a runner. I’ve never been fast and a single marathon in 1999 was enough for my bucket list, but I loved running. When I was sidelined six years ago, I dropped into depression and fits of rage. Running had always managed my emotions. Running was my prescription. Frustrated? Run! Tempted? Run! Angry? Run!

I joined F3 7 months ago and it has changed my life. I’m even back to running short jaunts when my back allows. I might be “the six” on any run, but I don’t quit – ever. It might get ugly and slow, but I don’t quit.

I’ve seen a lot of HIMs wrestle with sad clown syndrome (we all do). I remember your faces and a few of your F3 names. Some of you, my F3 brothers, started well but have drifted to your old life (you’re not alone… every one of us has our ups and downs). We miss you. I miss you.

4am wakeups are tough. Getting out of a comfortable bed to post in 20-degree weather is hard. But, such choices are the hill set before you. These are your daily red pills. You can chose to drift back into the lifestyle you had before F3, but I wonder, wasn’t there something from within your soul that drove you to post that first day? Isn’t there something missing in your life, now that you’ve slipped back to the former ways, that you need to get back? I know you feel that call of the wild to become the best man you can be for you, your family, and your community. It’s not too late; it’s never too late.

If you’re in town and not working a swing shift this Saturday, you have only three options:

  1. Post at the Joe Davis run in Rock Hill (great cause / great HIMs);
  2. Join us at Normandy (I’ll have my 2.0s “Parkour” and “Jumper” assisting me on Q) or post to another site if you like;
  3. Ignore the call of the wild God placed deep inside of you.

This is your hill. Don’t quit. Don’t stop. Don’t give up.

I wanted to set a record for attendance and for FNGs at Slow Burn last Friday. We got neither one… What we did get were a few leadership lessons and a lot of mumblechatter…

The Thang:
Warm it up, Chris:
A typical set of warmy-uppy things… Windmills, Merkins, Side Straddle Hops, that sort of thing.

First, 10 burpee penalty for no FNGs. Then we split into four groups for a little Four Corners. After each round we planked for the six and for a little inspiration about being #ThatSomebody. We did 15 of each exercise – AMRAP until time is up.

There was quite a bit of mumble chatter, from proper attire to proper terminology for muscle groups to … It adds a new dimension of difficulty when you are trying not to laugh and maintain proper form.  Every exercise becomes a core exercise.

Prayers for families.  Childrens surgeries, disobedience, unrest.  This was a lot of fun and I hope the men that showed up continue to do so.

“Sensitive Fingers and GPSes”

The PAX: Chicken Wing, Drop Thrill, Figaro, Java, MP, WhatDid, and Bourne (Q)

7 ½ participated in a cold, angry Weinke, workout at Tomahawk. It was 7 and a HALF, because a certain retired Command Sergeant Major from Rock Hill (for instance, oh, I don’t know, maybe… Sapper) attempted to post but ended up in Sun City instead. Thus, he and I accidentally added a 2ndF, after the workout, with some coffee at Bojangles.

For the seven HIMs with working GPSs, congratulations on fighting the hardest battle of the day by leaving the comfort of our beds to enter the arena of 16* weather. Good job. Most of our neighbors would never consider entering int0 such weather. This reminds me though, we’ve all been there; let’s get out there and EH some of these sad clowns. They need it, just like we need it.

YHC was angry when creating the Weinke.

The Warmup:

Following disclaimers, we moseyed around the parking lot a couple of times for a warm-up. We continued with 20 SSH, Movement to Prep – 1 (something I brought from my last job), 10-4 count Merkins, Movement to Prep – 2, overhead arm pulls and cross body, arm stretches.

The Thang:

Moseying to the light, we began a two-HIM team circuit with the following:

Station 1 – The first team member conducted 40 kettle bell Overhead Presses, while the second team member bear crawled to the corner sidewalk and began a series of 200 Merkins (team-count).

When the first team member finished the 40 overhead presses, he bear crawled to switch out with his partner by continuing the 200 Merkins, and allowing his partner to return to the center to conduct 40 kettle bell overhead presses. This cycle (40 Overhead press, bear crawl, merkins) continued until the team completed 200 Merkins.

Each station followed the same sequence of one HIM conducting 40 KB reps while the other traveled to another station in order to complete 200 reps of a different exercise. It looked like this:

Station 2: 40 Triceps Extensions (lunges with kettle bell to the next corner) and 200 team-count LSS with kettle bell.

Station 3: 40 kettle bell curls (20L/20R) (crab walk to next corner) and 200 Carolina Dry Docks.

Station 4: 40 kettle bell upright rows (lunges with kettle bell to the next corner) and 200 sidewalk curb dips with your kettle bell in your lap.

There was some modification to complete 100 team-counts initially, but everyone went back to work on finishing the 200. We wrapped up with a mosey around the parking lot.

In all, everyone did a minimum of 1,000 reps; however, most completed closer to 1,400 reps of one exercise or another.

Chicken Wing has brought some renewed energy to this site; thanks for the leadership and hard push today. Thanks for getting me off my fourth point of contact to commit to a Q as well.

He, Figaro, and Java maintained their typical hard-working nature at Tomahawk and even joined me in a bit of mumble chatter. Although, I seem to recall pumping out 150 CDDs on my own while waiting on Java to “mosey” to his car to get a second set of gloves (he must have sensitive fingers).

MP, WhatDid and Drop Thrill – it was nice (officially) meeting each of you this blustery morning. Although my Weinke was a bit convoluted, you guys never quit… looks like each of you has been-there, done-that. Thanks for the encouraging words and effort.

The COP:

We wrapped it up at the COP with a brief devotional thought, announcements and prayers.

Although the word of the month is “empathy,” I chose a different COT discussion for the thought of the day: King David, during a time when kings went to war, decided to fartsack it and instead, got in a lot of trouble (an affair, an unwed pregnancy with another dude’s wife, murdering a General, losing his child from it all, etc.). His head was not where it needed to be. He should have been preparing for war, but instead was taking the easy road. It’s easy to get wrapped up in things that are less important or to get lazy in the cold – don’t. Take time to refocus on your M, your 2.0s, your church, your career – wherever it is you need to be focused on. Don’t let January’s Resolution turn into a 6-week exercise program that drops off – ’cause it’s easy to do. Whatever you need to do to remain mentally, spiritually, and physically prepared, get yourself there.

Get your mind right.

Hands froze to Kettlebell

10 PAX braved the single digits this morning to warm themselves up with kettlebells. YHC intent was to keep everyone moving so their hands wouldn’t freeze to the kettlebells. The thang:

YHC found some chalk at home and wrote an exercise in 14 parking stalls. Each PAX started at various parking stalls, completed the exercise, then ran a lap around church parking lot, then moved onto the next exercise.

2017 Merkin Challenge

It is that time of year again to set your goals.

Last year, I was able to reach my running goals thanks to the training and support of F3 Bing.  He was patient with me and my slow pace during our long runs.  He also offered good advice about shoes, stretching, and other ways to improve my running.  I thought I would throw out a challenge since I know how much he loves merkins.  The goal I set for him was 25,000 merkins by the end of the year.  I agreed to do at least 50,000.  I got a soft commitment so I thought we would set it in stone by posting it out to the Pax.

The rules are simple.  Keep track of the number of merkins perfomed each day (F3 workouts count)  Remember, good form, none of those half Carolina Dry Dock/Merkins where your body is not moving. The purpose is to develop consistency over time and improve our overall fitness. The great thing is you can do them anywhere…home, work, even when you travel.

New Vision for Children’s Attention Home

Beginning this month we will begin building upon the work that has already been faithfully started by other PAX at the Children’s Attention Home in Rock Hill, SC. The vision has been changed to plant, grow, and serve a small workout group to invigorate male leadership within the Children’s Attention Home.

A traditional F3 workout will be performed each time we visit with the young males (12+) living at the home to create an environment of male leadership within the home that will impact others within the home and the community.

FiA Nation has stepped up to begin working with the young ladies to allow for our regions to focus solely on the young men.

We will be holding a Meet & Greet time on Jan. 28, 2017 at 1600 to allow for us to meet the young men and begin forming relationships with them. Workouts will then begin on Feb. 11, 2017 at 1600 and will occur every two weeks depending on the CAH calendar. We will be able to use the areas around the home which include Winthop University lake, the field at First Christian Church, and the CAH grounds themselves. The workout will be renamed at the first workout from Justice League to a name that is meaningful to the young men with the theme of The Fort and The Patriot.

Workout Q’s will be responsible for the following: Explaining F3 and giving the disclaimer at the beginning of each workout; Leading the 45-min. workout (be aware of the physical abilities of the young men and adjust accordingly); Hold a short devotion incorporating the Monthly Theme that our regions are using; Naming any FNG’s and inserting; Write a BackBlast; and marketing of the workout to build interest throughout the regions.

We will continue to support CAH by holding off-site events, grounds support, and goods drives. These will not be on a regular schedule, but will be marketed throughout the regions so all are aware of them.

Remember: Photos and videos are not allowed during any of the events we hold for the Children’s Attention Home for security purposes.

We are currently praying for a PAX who has a passion for the work of CAH to step up and be the Site Q for the workout sessions. This will involve the same roles as a Site Q for all other F3 workouts. If interested contact Reborn, Smiley Face, or Chicken Hawk.

Thank you all for the support you have provided in the past and we look forward to this new venture at the Children’s Attention Home. Please be praying that God will bless our efforts there so that we can build up young males that will one day be leaders in the community and beyond.

Warm Up with all my favorites in cadence in COP, plus a long series of back and forth across the parking lot…crowd pleasers included broad jump-burpee-bear crawl and broad jump-burpee-crabwalk…

Sermon was about resetting the scoreboard for 2016 and going into 2017. God forgave all of your sins not just the ones you think should be forgiven. Men can’t forgive ourselves, let 2016 failures go, and set a new course for 2017, where your past does not impede your future.

Pre-Blast: The Yeti 2017, Less Miles, More Pain

Alrighty PAX! It’s that time of year and I don’t want this #CSAUP to slip by anyone’s radar. Welcome to the 2nd installment of The Yeti! This year things are going to be a bit different. Here’s a list of some of the changes:

    • We’re adding an extra painstation
    • We’re adding trails (ASCG and Baxter)
    • We’re adding a rucking option
    • We’ve decreased the mileage…kidding 🙂
    • Event will start and finish at Golden Corral

With Pathfinder starting in February, YHC thought he would add some of the Pathfinder challenges (coupon, time hack, etc.) to the Yeti in an effort to help PAX reach their Pathfinder goals. After several failed attempts to incorporate, I realized that I was straying from the purpose of the Yeti, a complete body beatdown with some serious mileage. And let’s face it, we’re big boys and can set goals for ourselves without Zima laying them out for you. That said, there is a rucking option and it may kill you. So without saying much more as I tend to do, here’s The Thang!

Rucking Group: Show up to GC no later than 4:45 AM for Prep and BOM!

Running Group: Show up to GC no later than 6:15 AM for Prep and BOM. COP will starts at 6:30 AM.

Run/Bike Group: Show up at GC no later than 6:50 AM for Prep and BOM. COP starts at 7:00 AM. Plan on dropping your bikes off at Bruce Rush Pavillion at 6:30 AM. The Greenway will be opening the gates promptly at 6:30 for us.

Relay Notes: If you are participating as a 2-man relay, the process is very simple. Both Pax show up at GC. 1st Runner departs while the 2nd Runner drives car to the next pain station/AO. Complete the pain station as a group and then 2nd Runner departs while the 1st Runner drives car to the next station. Sounds complicated but it’s really not!

Biker Notes: Obey all posted signs and travel with traffic

Additionally, as last year I’m sure there will be tons of questions. My advice? As with all things F3, these are merely suggested options for the Yeti. At the end of the day, do what you want to do and what feels right. Push yourself but don’t hurt yourself. Remember the first rule of the Yeti…Don’t Die!
