Old School at the Original AO: The Fort

Couldn’t believe- were my eyes fooling me?  Funhouse and YHC on Q on the same day at the same AO at the same time.  Say it aint so muchacho!  There was a lot of chatter leading into the epic debauchery of sweatin and gruntin (do not insert bombjacks here).  17 hardnose PAX and Funhouse showed up on crispy cool morning.  40’s and a little damp from rain the night before leaving a bit of a foggy haze- perfect for the reason we call it the #gloom.  I warned of gloves as standard equipment but Captain Leatherhands told me to grow a pair, that we don’t need no stinkin gloves (really the only reference you can make to Blazing Saddles today).

I think Funhouse disclaimed.  I know he has a “mustache”.  Into the Gloom once more-

The Thang

Center of the field, in the grass and no complaining.

Warm O Rama:   50 cadence count SSH, some Mountain Climbers, IWs, and eventually 6 count burpees in cadence.  Where do we put the emphasis when its more than a 4 count anyway.

To the hill for Jacob’s ladder (1-7)  Flying squirrels and Carolina Dry Docks.

Over to Soccer field but gate locked.  No matter.  10 minute Merkins- 10 merkins every minute for 10 minutes.  Challenging toward end except for push up/pull up king @trucker.  ‘shanks was on a table and we took a deep dive in to number of children and whether the red headed ones were truly ours- Aye: We are all God’s children men.

hand off to YHC- 5 burpees OYO then follow me.

A few PAX made believe they were William Wallace and Bravehearted their way down the hill and across the foggy field to the tree line.  Plank for #six.  YHC discussed WOM: Vulnerability.  More on that later.

Partner up (I preselected ‘Shanks because I am glutton for punishment).  Partner Carry across field.  P1 plank, P2 ski jump over legs.  Flapjack Partner Carry across field.  Flapjack Plank/Ski Jump.  Repeato twice more.  As CSPAN says- “Excellent choice”  Lot of honest woofing out there.  Old school and everybody was stronger and better.

Tunnell of love- 18 PAX plank, 1 army crawls through.  Several had rucks on durning this and throughout workout.  Good on ya, men.  Our line was an “S” at ENDEX but it got done.  never mind the kindness of the planking PAX that drop their hips when you pass through.  “love taps”?

Lt. Dan.: Evil twin brother of Jack Webb.  Squat and Jump lunges/Mary Catherine’s.  Ratio 1-4.  Finished at 10-40.  Lot of chatter through this one.  Still have difficulty moving today.   Sunshine, oh sunshine.  Kept his Welch’s Grape Juice down but it looked iffy rounds 7-10.  WWL with ruck and getting each knee dirty in perfect form.

Mosyed home with a few Pearls on a String stations to close out.

Naked man Moleskin

Heckuva beatdown today.  Knew it was going to be fun.  Maximus had a good summation tweet: This is type of morning that keeps PAX engaged and coming back.  It was hard, insightful, inspirational, and comical…all at the same time.”  AYE!

Couple of call outs- Longshanks is a beast.  I bonked 8/10 of way through last leg of partner carries.  He picked me up like he was going for gold at #spartan.  Aye, Captain Leatherhands.  Pusher had an interesting matchup with Quack attack for the carries, and DH took WWL AND his Ruck across the finish line.  Good work boys.  A few men saved their knees and modified the Lt. Dan’s.  Always smart to know your body- not trying to get hurt just better.  Well done.  ‘Shanks may have been the #king of Jacob’s ladder too.  Sale boys were great partners, toughed it out and yet somehow both kept smiling on their handsomely #triplehate faces.

A word on Vunerability (shared with the men):

Society pushes men away from being vulnerable and say that among many things -it shows weakness.  I can only think back to what a missing element of life our previous generations, perhaps and specifically our fathers had.  Is your father a sharer?  Grandfather?  Consider all the life they have lived and how much loneliness they could have endured.

F3 has provided many tools for the men who seek the truth every morning in the gloom.  At the top of the list is the opportunity to be vulnerable and learning to be vulnerable during our workouts, our COTs, our shield locks, and our whetstone relationships.  Its here you find out you’re not alone and there are other men who have or who are experiencing what you are.  There is strength in that.  There is confidence in that.  There are solutions in that.  There is trust in that.

Lastly, and arguably the most important: develop a vulnerable relationship with your creator.  Be a seeker.  Truthful, humble.  I have found the most freeing I can ever be is to be transparent and vulnerable, ready and willing to give myself over to understanding, empathy and learning.

Aye!

Puketoberfest Week 3

Some have asked me what Puketoberfest is really about. Obviously I jokingly say that if you can’t tell by the name you should think about it again. However my desire for it really is to pick a list of Qs that would push the paxs a little harder than usual. With being able to pair them together it should make for a really good workout. Plus typically during the month of October you get to enjoy nice cool temps so it makes it a little easier for pax to push harder than it does when it is 80 degrees at 7 am with 95% humidity. In setting this up I didn’t actually expect anyone to puke, but wanted pax to push hard enough that they might think they could.

The Thang:

YHC gave the disclaimer for the 3rd week of Puketoberfest.

Moseyed over to the parking lot across from the memorial.

Sasquatch lead the group in a few minutes of broga

As promised Geronimo lead the group in the Goofball and Wegmans did the Pumpkin Spice (not doing that again)

After all of that we quickly went into our first round of exercises

Start at the parking lot – jump over the wall and go toward the building

Do 5 donkey kicks

Come back down to the parking lot and do 1 burpee.

Rinse and repeat until you reach 1 donkey kick and 5 burpees. +-1 for each.

Then we moved over to the grass hill where we bear crawled up the hill to find cinderblocks waiting for us. Pax partnered up and we did the following:

Pax 1 – Overhead carry block to next row of parking spaces and run back to Pax 2

While waiting on Pax 1 – Pax 2 is doing Mike Tyson Merkins

Pax 2 will then run to block and pick it up and overhead carry to the next row. Then run back. Keep doing this until team has moved the block all the way across the parking lot and back to the beginning.

Next exercise thanks to Sasquatch for bringing it up as a “good idea” next time someone does a cinderblock workout.

Partners get in plank position with both having one hand on the block. Work together to move the plank 15ft while doing a merkin after each time the block is moved.

Next set of exercises:

Squats with block – partner did LBCs until finished

Thrusters with block – partner did American Hammers until finished

Handed over to Trucker for the next 30 mins:

Quadzilla 5s: run down road, 1 squat, run up backwards, 5 merkins, rinse repeat just like 7s

Line up end parking lot, suicides to each light.

First round 1,2,3 merkins.

Round 2: 5,10,15 squats,

round 3: 5,10,15 merkins.

Round 4: 3,6,9 SSH.

In between rounds were flutters.

Round 4 we ran backwards.

Ran to springs building 2 rounds of people chairs and 10 merkins. COT

Puketoberfest…Wk 2

Bonsai and his terrible ideas brought together round 2 of The Fort’s Puketoberfest as 7 men joined Jedi & YHC (welcome FNG Hit n’ Run) this past Saturday. The bar was set, the chatter was chatted and as the sun rose this beautiful morning, Jedi stood in the middle of the PAX for a moment to disclaim the disclaimer.

So…we mosey’d down the path with some knees-to-chest, heels-to-butt and toy soldiers. One more short mosey then forward moving hillbilly squat walkers (these are straight-up awkward) to the red-light sign.

Quick shoulder warm-up with Moroccan Night Clubs and some other stuff.

Enough of that, let’s get this going:

5 cones spaced 10yds apart. PAX do 5 burpees or some variation thereof, crawl/move to the next cone, 5 more of those burpees, crawl/move, etc to the end. After the burpees at the 5th cone, immediately do an about face and run the full 5-tier suicide using the cones that just marked your burpees. Finish with a Mary exercise while waiting on the 6. Us slow folks (Maximus writing) thankfully only got through 3 of the planned 6 rounds.

The variations were:

  1. Normal burpees, bear crawl, flutter kicks.
  2. Walmart burpees (Maximus fav), duck walks (Geronimo fav), dying cockroaches (nobody’s fav)
  3. Jackass burpees, 2 CCD & 2 Crab Cakes, LBCs

Hand off to Maximus:

Circle up in Ft. Mill’s best grass…

Jack Webb’s consisting of the typical offenders: 1 Merkin : 4 Overhead Claps up to 10:40

8ct Burpees for a few

Partner up at the playground:

P1: Pull ups while P2 runs to the path near the base of the hill.

Flapjack and repeat

P1: Tuck Jumps while P2 runs to the base of the hill.

Flapjack and repeat

Lt Dans consisting of the typical offenders: 1 Squat : 4 Jumping Lunges up to 6:24.

A few more 8ct burpees.

Line up in 1 line, arms width apart and drop to your 6, facing West for a full 51 (in a 4ct cadence so that is 102 total) American Hammers (Personal favorite)

Mosey to the base of the hill to run the to the top and jog back down…4 times.

Take a breather for a quick chat then 1 more time up for good measure.

COT

Announcements: Paradise reading center opportunity, F3 Christmas Party

Prayers: Marriages, FNGs.

No man left behind and leave no man where you found him.

The Barnabas Workout

7 Sons of Encouragement braved Tropical Storm Michael today. We mostly took refuge for safety reasons under the awning as we moseyed to the front of Springfield Elementary. A forewarning was given in the beginning at the parking lot that we would be moving the entire 45 minutes as well as the basic F3 disclosure.

We started with a warm-up run including high knees, butt-kickers, side shuffles, and toy soldiers. The paced picked up as we got closer to the awning.

Some additional warm-up highlights: everyone seemed to be breathing pretty heavily after warm-up, which included side lunges, squats, crucifix, full-body crab reach, SSHs, shoulder stretches, large arm circles, shoulder shrugs, backwards lunges, and, of course, merkins. I probably forgot a few more.

The Thang:

We broke up into 2 groups with a PAX in the middle. Each group did the same exercise from the middle of the front of the school to the end of the awning and back (at least once) while the PAX, I mean monkey, in the middle did full dips on an Equalizer set of bars until exhaustion and then KB swings until everyone was done with their exercises. As we waited on whoever was the six, we stayed in 6 inches plank. Each person rotated in as we immediately, and I mean immediately, started the next workout exercise(s). We did at least 14 rounds of exercises before we switched the monkey in the middle exercise and did almost another 14 rounds. The second go-round included an agility exercise focusing on concentration, stepping, higher knees and left-right and right-left movement followed by single arm thrusters with the 30 lb KB.

While the PAX in the middle was doing his thing, below are just a sample of the exercises we did today with several left off purposely so you will just have to experience them yourself next time! Most reps were in the 10-180 range.

  • Derkin into a opposite leg Tuck Planks
  • Single leg hops
  • Long jump hops
  • Frog walks
  • High toe touches
  • SSHs
  • X Jumps
  • Squat Jumps
  • Sprints
  • 50% sprints
  • Turkish getups
  • Lunges
  • Backwards lunges
  • The “Straight Up version of The Worst Merkin Ever” (lots of groaning on this one including from me)
  • Bear Crawls
  • Standard Derkins
  • Backwards Bear Crawls
  • Air Mountain Climbers
  • And we finished with Spiderman crawls

I will admit that the Spiderman crawls sucked the last bit of energy out of me. Big shout-out to Jedi and Cha-Ching who rocked the last exercise even in their exhausted state. One of these days I may become as flexible as Jedi and as strong as Cha-Ching . . . well, in reality, maybe not. Good goal to have.

Other highlights:

Dillweed: tough, tough workout partner. Thank you for your partnership today!

Jiffy: always love your consistency and superb attitude!

Love Handle: man, how you have improved! Keep up the progress and great work! You are starting to make things look easy!

Peabody: Always impressive, especially with the physical struggles that have kept him out from time to time. Solid, impactful example performance today.

So these were your 7 Sons of Encouragement today. Today’s theme: Encourage another today whether that is your gift or not. We had SUPERB encouragement from each other with this group. I challenge you to go out in your own little world and encourage someone today. And in your own Qs, bring the encouragement!

Lastly, I did not get to say this during the group this morning, but I was very encouraged by Drew Brees this week as I walked into the break room at work for a total of 5 seconds and heard on the tv a quote from him. I am a terrible memorizer but I was able to get this quote on one go-round. Thank you, Lord. I have always admired his efforts in the NFL but this encouragement quote really stuck out this week as I and many of you have had setbacks: “A setback is nothing more than a setup for a comeback.” Thanks for the encouragement and true words, Drew.

Go out this week and get at it in all you do. Praise to the One  who made you.

COT: Specific prayer requests: Some wives have really been struggling as of recent. Let’s support them in prayer, love them and be there for them. Prayer for all those working through Hurricane Michael issues today and yesterday and for safe travel for all.

I’m out for 2018. No more Qs. Look me up to Q at your site in Ft Mill/Rock Hill/Lake Wylie mid-Feb 2019+. Peace out!

MANY, MANY THANKS TO JIFFY FOR LETTING ME SERVE THE PAX AT YOUR SITE. Until next time, brother!

Prepare for a White Out

YHC was called off the bench to deliver the game winning pain. There was no weinke just some ideas floating in YHC mind in what to do…not a good way to lead, Wasn’t sure if any PAX would show up as well since competing with Reborn’s Beyond workout, just knew Bonsai HC earlier in the week.

Knowing that the annual Penn State White Out is three days away, what other way to deliver some pain at the Ranch then to do some crowd favorite waves!

Mossy to student drop off at Springfield MS for COP:

Windmills, IW, merkins, squats and one other just cant remember

First wave was the elbow plan burpee wave. PAX lined up in a line in elbow plank. First PAX did 2 burpees while rest of PAX stayed in plank. Once first PAX was done, down to plan and next PAX does 2 burpees, and so on. did 3 straight rounds. If we had more PAX it would have visually looked like a wave within a stadium.

Individual Dora 1-2-3: 50 merkins, 100 LBCs, 100 squats. Between each one, run the drop off loop.

finish at the driveway behind school and lunge walk up hill to first school entrance.

Mossy to Elem School drop off/front door. 20 step ups, 5 burpees, repeat twice.

Mossy to…..playground!

Elbow Plank Pull-up wave (crowd favorite). Plank with 5 pull ups per PAX, repeat 3x’s.

Ended with big boys situps, 6″ Moroccan nightclubs (lay on back, feet 6″off ground while doing MC), 5 burpees, and 5 more pull ups.

Mossy to COT, and since we had a few minutes to spare, run around the drop off circle.

Thanks Jiffy for bringing in the back up Q, it’s always fun to Q at the Ranch due to the number of places/things you can do.

Prayers: Bonsai and M in guiding their 2.0, Trucker’s M for going back to Grad School and patience within the house, Peabody’s M’s birthday, and colleague of Truckers in Raleigh who was just diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Labor Day Hero VQ!

First time… nervous… big stage at Honey Badger… I was cornered by Dark Helmet last Monday to lead. And by cornered I mean he casually asked if I would lead, and I said yes. I can say I didn’t get much sleep out of fear for sleeping in and missing the opportunity. Welp, I made it and so did 12 other PAX.

The clock struck 5:00, and we were off.

Warm Up

MOSEY 600 Yards
SSH x 30
Windmill x 15
Moroccan Night Clubs x 20
Low Slow Squat x 15
Mountain Climbers x 21

The Thang:

Hero WOD in tribute to Petty Officer Second Class Danny Dietz of the Navy SEALs – Posthumous Navy Cross Recipient

Jun 28, 2005. Operation Red Wings. A mission inserting four Navy SEALs into the Afghan Mountains in an attempt to eliminate a Taliban threat. Outnumbered once they were compromised, they descended the hills in search of cover.

Dietz was hit multiple times in his torso yet continued to fight on. He was finally killed when hit in the head.

Dietz was the first of the group to be killed, followed by Murphy, then Axelson. Marcus Luttrell was able to escape to a village where he was cared for until they could send word to a local marine base.

Danny Dietz was KIA during Operation Red Wings alongside Lt. Michael Murphy, Petty Officer Second Class Matthew Axelson, and 16 other Special Forces who were shot down in a Chinook Helicopter while attempting an extraction. This took place in a mountainous region of Afghanistan and was an attempt to quell a Taliban threat. Though the mission was deemed one of the greatest losses in Special Forces history, it paved the way for more success in the war on terror in the Middle East. It is because of missions like these that we are able to enjoy the freedoms we sometimes take for granted; if it weren’t for these brave men we wouldn’t have what we have today. I hope that today we honored their sacrifice through our small amount of pain.

10 Rounds

200M Run
5 Pull-Ups
10 KB Swings
15 Goblet Squats
20 Merkins

Since it was my VQ (and I obviously didn’t realize the kind of animals I’d be working with), we finished a liiiiittle bit earlier than anticipated. About 20 minutes. Whoops! Needless to say we jumped into some Mary.

LBCs (Led by Dark Helmet because I was too busy lagging behind in my WOD)
Rosalitas (Also led by Dark Helmet)
Flutter Kicks
Hello Dolly’s
Heels to the Heavens

We got up for a nicely paced 400M run, then headed back to the hill near the pull up bars for some timely Quadzillas! New to me, not to the group. They were welcomed with groans.

We circled back to the COT to do some last second Weighted Flutter Kicks. Phew! We made it! First VQ complete. Nerves relieved.

Number off (13), Name-a-Rama, announcements, praise/prayers.

Spiderman is celebrating 13 years of marriage today (Sep 3rd), good on you!

Invergence is coming 9/21/18 at Rush Pavilion, 5:30PM. DON’T bring a box of fried chicken. Apparently some people don’t like chicken.

PAX who showed up.

Punch List

A few animals stayed around for a 6:30 Maltz Challenge as well as some #HIM from other AO’s. Needless to say, it was a sweaty morning filled with camaraderie and pain.

Thanks to all for giving me the opportunity to lead in the company of leaders! Looking forward to next time.

BB for #Beyond at the #Ranch – 8-23-18

17 PAX joined YHC for something different at the Beyond edition of The Ranch. In the spirit of Beyond, I wanted to try something that would push the PAX beyond their comfort zone. Something that would require some mental toughness, perseverance, and grit.

Inspired by this video from SealFit Academy, I thought we would test the mental veracity of our PAX with a 45 minute plank.

Here are the rules:

  • Hold plank (in various forms called by the Q – regular, elbow, left arm high, right arm high, honeymooner, downward dog) for the full 45 minutes of the workout, starting immediately at 5:15, ending at 6:00.
  • If plank was exited, PAX would have to do 5 burpees as a penalty and join back in the plank. This became 5 hand release burpees for the second half of the workout.
  • Q would read an inspiring quote re: mental toughness & perseverance every 2 minutes throughout the workout.
  • PAX were encouraged to partner up at the beginning of the workout and rely on each other to push through the pain.

Quotes:

  1. “Mental toughness is spartanism with qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication. It is fearlessness, and it is love.” ―Vince Lombardi
  2. “Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory.” ―Bill Russell
  3. “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” ―Thomas Jefferson
  4. “It’s when the discomfort strikes that they realize a strong mind is the most powerful weapon of all.” ―Chrissie Wellington
  5. “Throw away all weakness. Tell your body that it is strong, tell your mind that it is strong and have unbounded faith and hope in yourself.” ―Swami Vivekananda
  6. “Strong minds suffer without complaining; weak minds complain without suffering.” ―Lettie Cowman
  7. “Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will.” ―Mahatma Gandhi
  8. “Your toughness is made up of equal parts persistence and experience. You don’t so much outrun your opponents as outlast and outsmart them, and the toughest opponent of all is the one inside your head.” ―Joe Henderson
  9. “Make sure your worst enemy doesn’t live between your own two ears.” ―Laird Hamilton
  10. “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” ―Marcus Aurelius
  11. “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them―a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.” ―Muhammad Ali
  12. Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.- Walter Elliott
  13. Grit is that ‘extra something’ that separates the most successful people from the rest. It’s the passion, perseverance, and stamina that we must channel in order to stick with our dreams until they become a reality. – Travis Bradberry
  14. ”I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature.”- John D Rockefeller
  15. ”Perseverance is also key to success in any endeavor, but without perseverance in combat, there can be no victory.”- Jocko Willink
  16. “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” -Thomas Edison
  17. “With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable.” -Thomas Fowell Buxton
  18. “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” – Christopher Reeve
  19. “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
  20. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” – Thomas Edison
  21. “Failure at some point in your life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable.” – Joe Biden
  22. “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” ―Nelson Mandela
