Pick a card at Quagmire

It was a non-winter Monday morning and a great group of PAX showed up to get the week started. No FNGs but disclaimer was given and off we went.

  • Mosey to Home Depot lot with high-knees, butt-kickers, & karaoke’s along the way. Circle up for normal stretchy things, grunting, and other pleasantries.
  • Mosey to alley behind Home Depot. PAX line up on one side and start with flutters. PAX run to wall and do BTW walk down the wall, crab walk to end of next wall, run to end of alley, 20 squats, run back to PAX. When PAX ahead of you is 1/4 way down wall next PAX start. Large group so it took a while to cycle through everyone.
  • Mosey over to fountain and break into 2 groups. Each group had a cone at down at round-about with 8 cards. Each card had an exercise for the group to do together and then another exercise for group to do while next PAX ran to get next card. Each group had same cards but order was random.
    • Run full lap outside round-abouts / LBCs
    • 20 jump squats / plank punches
    • 10 Lt Dans (lunge-lunge-squat) / plank jacks
    • 20 dips / flutters
    • Run full lap outside round-abouts / Freddie mercs
    • 15 diamond merkins / SSHs
    • 20 derkins / step-ups
    • 10 burpees / MNCs
  • Mosey back to COT for a few minutes of Mary

I’ve been doing my normal routine of running on Mondays so it was good to shake things up and get back out to Quagmire. Always a great group of PAX with lots of mumble-chatter (DH was there). Thanks DaVinci for the opportunity!

Bombs and Blimps at the Swamp

It was an especially gloomy morning but it didn’t stop several PAX from posting to the Swamp. Disclaimer was given and we split up into bootcampers, ruckers, and runners. BCs moseyed over to the Home Depot overhang with some high-knees, butt-kickers, and karaoke along the way.

  • 1st stop – 5 burpees, wind-mills, hillbilly walkers, 5 burpees
  • Mosey to failed restaurant overhang – 5 burpees, 25 SSHs, 10 merkins, 5 burpees
  • Mosey to lot in front of Books-a-Million – 5 burpees, something else, squats, 5 burpess
  • Line up across parking spaces. Bear-crawl across 1 merkin, backward bear-crawl to start 1 merkin – Repeat for a total of 5 trips
  • Mosey to bank drive-thru and partner up for Bombs. Partner 1 does the exercise while partner 2 runs a lap around bank, then flip flop. No set amount, just keep doing exercise and hope partner runs fast. B=Burpee, O=O’s (tiny circles), M=Monkey Humpers, B=Bombjacks, S=Squats
  • Mosey back to BAM overhang. Blimps with same partners. P1 does the exercise while P2 runs to building across lot and back, then flip-flop. B=Burpees, L=Lunges, I=Imperial Squat Walkers, M=Merkins, P=Plank Jacks, S=Seal Jacks. The slight uphill run on the way back each time added to the suck.
  • Mosey back to failed restaurant overhang for some Mary. 15 LBCs, 15 Flutters, 15 Freddie Mercs.
  • Mosey back to overhangs at mattress store. Not so great imitation of Lt Dan. 1 squat, 4 jumps touching overhang. Went from 1/4 up to 6/24 before time was up.
  • Mosey back to COT to meet up with rest of PAX.

I tried to use several of the overhangs to keep the PAX somewhat dry and keep us moving. But I don’t think it would’ve mattered, These guys would’ve been just as great out in the rain pushing each other. Thanks for all those that showed up and encouraged each other on this cold rainy morning. Always an honor to lead this group.

Interruptions: Short discussions about life lessons learned from the Game (not in order and not all covered)
https://gutsisthekey.com/2013/01/21/18-life-lessons-from-monopoly/
1. The game must be played with others. It is no fun to play alone.
2. You choose a game piece that represents you to other’s playing the game. It is like a public persona. You get to choose this image.
3. Baltic Ave or Boardwalk; You could end up on either one. It’s all the roll of the dice.
4. You only get paid as you keep on going around the board.
5. You can make a lot or lose a lot, just by where you happen to land in life.
6. Chance can be a good thing or bad but sometimes you hope for it cause it seems the only way to change your circumstance.
7. Nobody likes to go to jail, unless they are in worse trouble playing the game.
8. If you build on what you get, it can help you get more and win the game.
9. You can profit a lot, when others visit your places; especially if you have them developed.
10. There are costs with everywhere you go and everything you do.
11. You can not stay still for very long. Sometimes you can skip a turn but this may be good or it may be bad.
12. Sometimes you can move extra spaces and this may be good or it may be bad.
13. A cheater can ruin the game for everybody.
14. Sometimes you have to give some away, so people you like can stay in the game.
15. You never know what to expect in the game.
16. A good game takes a long time.
17. It’s only a game and the point of it is to have fun.
18. The only thing you get to keep when you quit the game is the relationship with the person you played with.

What does Victory look like for you? Are you chasing the right things?

F3 The Fort Thanksgiving Convergence 2017

70 Men came today to burn calories so they can eat whatever they want the rest of the day. Ok, maybe that was my reasoning, but most came because the know in order to get better, even in being Gratful, it is best when being challenged by your brothers. We all came to get better and realize this great thing we have called F3 and give thanks!
Santini Opening with warm up both physically and mentally with some leadership principles
Split off into the various groups!
4 went for for a Run
  • Drile (F3-Wapner)
Mozy to the front of SFES, high knees, toy soldiers, Butt kickers, and Knees to chest.
Mozy to front of SFMS, circled up…Side straddle hop, Merkins, Cherry Pickers, and Moroccan Nightclub
Mozy to SFMS bus loop …high knees, toy soldiers, Butt kickers, and Knees to chest.
Circled up.. Flutter Kicks and Low Slow Squats, America Hammer and Low Slow Squats, Merkins and Windmills, mountain climbers and windmills
Mozy to back of SFES, circled up…Peter Parker’s and Side Straddle Hop, Plank and windmill, shoulder taps and Low Slow Squats, LBCs and Moroccan Nightclub
Then rinse and repeated the above sequence…before joining the other groups at COT
    Lil E—Bootcamp Q
Mosey to the parking lot in the rear of school and circle up. SSHs, Imperial Walkers, Windmills, Squats
  • The thang
    • 10 cones set up in a line spaced about 10 paces apart. Each cone had an exercise and rep count on them. Do exercises on the first cone and run a lap of the parking lot. Once you complete the lap do the first cone and the second cone and then run a lap. Repeat this adding the next cone until all 10 are complete. Here were the exercises in order from first to last:
    • Burpees x 10
    • Bombjacks x 10
    • LBCs x 25
    • Merkins x 20
    • Jump Squats x 10
    • Flutter kicks x 40
    • CDDs x 20
    • Lunges x 20
    • Mtn Climbers x 20
    • Monkey Humpers x 20

Majority of the pax finished in the Lunges lap with a few speedsters out in front on the mtn climbers. Mosey back to the front of the school for some Freddy Mercury’s and Rosalitas.

After that met up with the Moderate and Black diamond groups for COT.

Everyone put out great effort today and really pushed themselves.

Witch Hunt—Black Diamond Q

Not even a trip to the hospital the night before with a pregnant wife could keep me away from this Thanksgiving workout. Shout out to Royale and Cha Ching for stepping up to help me out. Luckily I made it and we put in work.
We stared by counting off by 4 creating 4 teams.
Each team will compete to complete as many burpees as possible in 2-minutes with a catch. You can only do 10 at a time before you most complete 20 reps of ab exercise. 2 rounds:
1.) Burpees with LBCs (Somehow Bounce House was able to do 50 burpees. That dude is not human.)
2.) Burpees with Knee Tuck with crunchy frogs
Winners plank while losers perform 10 Kraken Burpees.
Blood was flowing so we moseyed to the hill by the middle school for some broken down burpees. Catch was that we had 20 minutes for everyone to complete. If everyone doesnt finish within the time then group does 25 Burpees.
Here was the setup:
Run Hill 10 times. (1 Hill Run = Up & Down)

5 Squat Jumps
5  Plank w\ Shoulder Taps
5 Merkins
5 Froggers
5 Squat Jumps

Run Hill 8 times.

10 Squat Jumps
10 Plank w\ Shoulder Taps
10 Merkins
10 Froggers
10 Squat jumps

Run Hill 6 times.

15 Squat Jumps
15 Plank w\ Shoulder Taps
15 Merkins
15 Froggers
15 Squat jumps

Run Hill 4 time.

20 Squat Jumps
20 Plank w\ Shoulder Taps
20 Merkins
20 Froggers
20 Squat jumps

Run Hill 2 time

25 Squat Jumps
25 Plank w\ Shoulder Taps
25 Merkins
25 Froggers
25 Squat jumps

With some great teamwork by the Pax everyone completed within the 20 minutes so no penalty was given.

I attempted to have Backdraft give us a 10-count however  he responded “There are no 10 counts during the Black Diamond.” So no 10 count and a quick mosey back to the parking lot for the 10 Minute 100 Burpee Challenge:

Complete 10 1-minute rounds of burpees in the following set scheme. Any time left over in the round is yours for rest. (typically PAX finish the set between 25 and 40 seconds)

Rd1- 8

Rd2- 9

Rd3- 10

Rd4- 11

Rd5-12

Rd6-12

Rd7-11

Rd8-10

Rd9- 9

Rd10- 8

Total – 100

Amazing work by all the Pax. I didn’t pull any punches with this setup for the Black Diamond and the Pax took it on without hesitation. We all survived and are better for it.

Thanks to Ginsu and Cake Boss for the opportunity to lead.

Pusher with closing remarks and finding #Victory

Prayers & Praises

Thank you F3 The Fort

Tour de Poopdeck

12 PAX posted on a chilly morning.

YHC started everyone off jogging then realized the disclaimer had been forgotten. Jogging stopped. Disclaimer made. Off moseying again + butt kickers, high knees, and karaokes.

Warm-o-Rama:

  • SSH, Windmills, MNCs, Finkle Swings (leg stretch – think Ray Finkle… or is it Einhorn?)

The Thang:

Jacob’s Ladder

  • We moseyed to a hill behind the bounce and bowl. Start at the bottom. Do 9 LBCs. Run up the hill and do 1 burpee. Run down, do 8 LBCs. Run up, 2 burpees. Buprees increase, LBCs decrease until you do 9 burpees and 1 LBC. Mosey to the front corner of the shopping center.

Lt. Dans for the length of the shopping center

  • Lunge, lunge, squat. rinse and repeat until you get to the last pillar. There was a good amount of mumble chatter for this one.

Modified Bataan Death March to the flagpole

  • Indian run where the last man stops to do 3 merkins before running to the front of the line. He taps the 6 while passing him, and the 6 then drops to do 3 merkins. Rinse and repeat until destination reached.

Shared some quick thoughts on victory (see below).

Bear Crawl ROF around the flagpole

  • PAX circle the flag and bear crawl around it 1 Lap. Everyone planks while each man takes turns doing 3 merkins. Repeat 3 times.

Butkus

  • 60 seconds of rapid step-ups onto the curb, followed by 30 secs of rest. Repeat 3 times.

Modified Bataan Death March to the shovel flag

Royale came to pick up turkeys for the Paradise community, and joined in for Freddy Mercuries to bring us to 6:00am.

Moleskin:

We talked about a little-known monument at the Poopdeck that honors Col. Thomas Neel and his family. Col. Neel was a veteran of the Revolutionary war, who fought in NC, SC, FL, and GA. He defended Charleston against the British in the siege of 1779. He was also a statesman, in the SC Provincial Congress and the NC Assembly. While Col. Neel is memorialized as a man of victory on multiple fronts, there is also a somber inscription on the monument that his wife, Jean Spratt Neel, was captured by Shawnees, murdered, and scalped.

We are a group of focused men who strive to make each other better. Victory is something that is not foreign to many of us. But are we being victorious in the right things? Are we building monuments to ourselves (careers, projects, egos) while at the same time our relationships with God, and our family suffer? Being victorious in the right things is just as important as being victorious. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his soul?

Thanks to Wild Thing of the opportunity to lead.

Mini Board of Pain at The Abyss

I hate being cold. BUT…..thankfully F3 makes sure the chill does not last long. The cold makes for good running and workout weather.

There’s always a good solid number of folks who show up at the Abyss, and today did not disappoint. No FNGs , disclaimer was said and off we went.

Moseyed around the entrance area parking lot. Nothing fancy, just a nice light run for a few minutes or so. Gathered up along the side of the school near the grassy hillside we ALL love (saving that for another Q) for the COP:

  • SSH x 25
  • WM x 15
  • IW x 20
  • MNC x 20
  • STRAWBERRY pickers x 15

Didn’t want to take too much time away from the main event. No talking (a first for a NASA Q), we just moseyed on over to the back of the school, where there is a nice oval track. Here I had the main event set up.

The MINI Board Of Pain

The real Board of Pain has become somewhat of a legend in The Fort region. It has been around for quite some time challenging people to complete it, and it is pretty much THE most challenging thing to try and complete in a 45min workout. I figured we need to keep our eye on the prize and came up with the mini version, lest people forget what the real one can do to the unprepared. There are 18 exercises, 100+ reps each, on the real BoP. With runs between exercises. This one is a scaled down, slightly rearranged version. Three groups of 5 exercises, 25 reps each OYO (unless otherwise noted), nonstop, with runs after every 5th exercise:

  1. Burpees
  2. Calf raises (50)
  3. Ski Abs
  4. Merkins
  5. Long, slow squats >>> Run a lap
  6. LBCs (50)
  7. CDDs
  8. American hammers
  9. Mac Tar Jai
  10. Jump squats >>> RUN FORREST, RUN!!
  11. Mountain climbers
  12. Shoulder raises (50)
  13. Mary Catherines
  14. Hello Dolly!
  15. Wide arm merkins >>> Run like the wind(ed)…
    >>> RINSE AND REPEAT
(missing from the original BoP were squat jacks, nipplers – whatever the hell those are, and burpees)

Again, NO talking from the Q. A first for NASA (mark it down). I did provide some Pandora streaming music, albeit with a little minor technical difficulty pairing my speaker with my phone (folks were on exercise 4 by the time I got it figured out). The PAX really got after it! Alot of great support and mumblechatter. Most everyone completed 2 full circuits, a few started on their third. GREAT JOB BY ALL!!

We took it right up to ~ 5:57. Enough time for a slow Indian run back to the COT.

NMM:

I kept the conversations to the end of the COT. Yes, believe it! I just want to highlight how amazing this thing we call F3 is, how much of an impact it can have on yourself AND others. Each and every day PAX are coming out at o-dark-thirty, rain or shine, heat or cold. They’re there to work out, but are drawn out by the people, the fellowship, and mad stronger by the Faith. The more and more you are exposed to the 3 F’s, the more and more you submit yourself to them and what they can do, the more and more you change. Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Each and every day PAX in F3 strive to get better in some aspect of their lives. And it has a contagious effect – you find yourself getting pulled along by those leading the way, or you may be pulling others along who need your leadership. It is amazing to watch people transform. I’ve seen many FNGs since I’ve started, and the ‘then vs now’ comparisons are inspiring to say the least. Those 3 F’s can have a profound impact on one’s life.

Almost 2 years ago before I started F3, I was a rather diffident person. I kept up a good facade, but if someone were to ask me to do 100+ burpees, do a handstand vertical against a wall, run a few trails in the middle of the night, run from Columbia to Charleston, ruck 20+ miles with 40lbs or so on my back doing exercises along the way, participate in a few completely stupid and utterly pointless events with alot of miles and alot of pain along the way, or run a marathon – I would just laugh and say “some day”. If someone were to ask me if I feel closer to God, even reading the Bible regularly and attending church again, I’d shrug it off and say “some day”. If someone were to ask me if I felt more in control of my own emotions, actions, and judgments, were the best husband and father a family could ask for, I’d roll my eyes and say “some day”. Well those “some day”s are now. I cannot believe some of the things I have done since the MANY amazing F3 PAX have entered my life, pushing and pulling me along to get better, push my limits. Their open-ness, inspiring stories, leadership, wisdom, and listening abilities have inspired me and helped me become a much better man in many ways. Their non-judgement has made me at ease when I do not feel as Christian as I should be in my ways, and with their help and leadership I am changing that. I am still a work in progress, but I am not afraid anymore to admit it nor am I afraid anymore to climb the proverbial mountain towards self improvement. I am eager and inspired to tackle it.

In the spirit of the month of Thanksgiving – each and every day I thank God for F3, and for the amazing people who really make it what it is.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead!

Maiden Voyage on the Poopdeck

We had 15 PAX gathered in the gloom for my VQ posting at Poopdeck, including 1 FNG EH’d by YHC.

Disclaimer was fully disclaimed, then we were off.

Warm-a-Rama

  • Short jog then circle up
  • Windmills
  • MNCs
  • Imperial Walkers
  • Low Slow Squats
  • Plank, Honeymooner, Downward Dog

The Thang

Moseyed over to the parking lot by the boat ramp for Ponzi Cones. So called because the reps form a pyramid, and they hopefully leave you spent. 4 cones set up around boat ramp parking lot (1/4 mile loop), 1 in each corner. PAX do the exercise for the round at each corner (4 sets), running/jogging between corners and plank till 6.

10 Burpees

20 LBCs

30 SSH

30 Plank Jacks

20 Freddy Mercuries

10 Merkins

For example, Round 1: run to 1st cone and do 10 burpees, run to 2nd cone and do 10 burpees, run to 3rd cone do 10 burpees, run to 4th cone do 10 burpees. Plank until 6 comes in. So you actually get 4X each exercise.

I shared some quick thoughts on a difficult period of leadership I had gone through recently. Looking back, it was a lot of prayer and my awesome family that got me through it. Sometimes I just need to be reminded that being a leader does not mean going it alone. Then we moseyed up to the wall for triple check.

Triple Check

PAX split into teams of 3. We had 15 so the math was perfect. Each round there are 3 exercises (1 for each PAX on the team). P1 and P2 hold their exercise until P3 returns from a lap. Everyone switches when P3 returns, cycling through until everyone does all three.

P1. Wall Sits

P2. Plank

P3. Run a lap around the parking lot

Meant to do 2 more rounds with variations on this, but we ran out of time. Circle up for COT.

COT

FNG was named Cherrio – originally from England.

Prayers for families, hurricane recovery, and work.

I had a great time planning out the workout and leading for the morning. Thanks to the 14 who came out for my maiden voyage as skipper of the Poopdeck. And a big thank you to Wild Thing for the opportunity to lead.
