Exten(d)uating Circumstances at Beyond Pantheon

The Beyond workouts initiated by Maximus at the start of this year are meant to test the PAX physically with black diamond-esque workouts, along with “extending” the Q in personal ways that may not occur at a standard workout. I jumped at this opportunity when presented and I recommend it to others to consider doing the same.

My Beyond topic was not going to be easy for me, and not known by many PAX. But I truly felt the need to use Beyond as a step moving forward and I have faith in support of the PAX. While my backblast is a little delayed, it is not for lack of thinking about how I was to write it up. I had already done a lot of thinking about it for weeks leading up to my Q.

The workout side of my Beyond was going to be tough and I’m sure the PAX who planned on posting knew a little extra running was coming.

As PAX were arriving, I advised to get their stretching in as we would be jumping right into the workout. A couple PAX arrived expecting Pantheon but were nudged into Beyond for a total of 12. Disclaimer given especially to modify as needed…but to try and push yourself.

I planned to speak in 3 parts during the workout about my spirituality, starting with my background (past), followed by my current status (present) and finishing with how I hoped to move forward (future)…hopefully with direct PAX help.

Before beginning the workout, I asked the PAX to keep an open mind and not to take anything personally. I needed them to bear with me as I knew only one way to speak on this topic and that was to be straightforward about my life experiences and observations. But as I get older, I see my mortality (and possible salvation) at hand.

I first told of my past as it pertained to religion. I was not raised in a religious family. I went to church a couple times, sometimes with my grandparents. Of course I was around Christianity my whole life, but I had no formal education. I told the PAX what I learned of religion as a child amounted to what I saw on tv…the Jim Bakers, the Benny Hinns, etc.  And what I was remember was a lot of asking for money and reading stories like those of older people giving away their life savings to guys like them. In college, I had some discussions with two brothers of the previous partying-type who had recently found God. So, my background is more logical and scientific without faith, or a faith ‘base’.

(I am sure this backblast may miss some things I talked about at Beyond, but possibly add a few things, too)

We moseyed around the school parking lot loop to the start of the straightaway for some “Burpee Miles”.  Our burpee miles were shortened for the .3 mile loop and consisted of 15 burpees, immediate sprint the straightaway cone to cone about :30,  jog around the loop back to the first cone. Rinse and repeat for 3 laps.

We went back for the 6 and crossed to the field for a break while I covered my “present” (or near present) within the last couple years.  A few years back, I used to have lunch meetings with a friend to discuss his Christianity and my spirituality. He always referred to me as a seeker. Some of the best discussions we had was coming at it from the point of view of Jesus as a man on earth. He loved everyone no matter the skin color or religious belief. He treated everyone equally. He had empathy for all men. He believed in good behavior by men.  I have taken this to heart and apply it to experiences in life, social issues, political issues, etc. Very simply…what would Jesus do? What would Jesus say?  Are people around me acting in a manner that Jesus would support?

I told the PAX that in quiet moments, I talk to God almost every day…even if I don’t have him defined by a book or even if I don’t know if I believe!  I ask questions, I ask for forgiveness for myself and I apologize for a lot of bad behavior that I see in the real world. I thank F3 because I know that without the opportunities that F3 has afforded me in this area,  especially seeing the positive things that faith offers, I would be nowhere near the seeking point I am now. While the F1 and F2 are of course important, its the 3rd F that is most consequential for all of us.

Our field work consisted of a continuous cycle through of exercises individually while each PAX put on a 40# ruck sack and carried a 30# sand bag overhead while crossing the soccer field and back. The exercises were, 25 each:

  • bombjacks
  • clap merkins
  • jump lunges left and right
  • plank jacks
  • squat jumps
  • reverse merkins
  • squat calf raises (a Tesh special)
  • plank shoulder taps

Much to the PAX dismay, we had time for 2 more burpee laps but with the burpees reduced to 10.

In COT, I addressed my “future” and how I move forward from here. I asked the PAX present, as I am asking any PAX reading this now, to reach out to me to discuss their faith….as of this writing a couple already have.  I need to reach out to Whetstone and continue pursuing in various ways. I will add here that while reading verses is ok, relating your personal belief system to me and how it applies in the real world is what I feel I need to hear. Tell me how you came to believe and about the positive ways your faith affects your life.  I see a lot of negativity in the real world, and our past history, and these things weigh on me heavily.  But be warned, if you take on this challenge that I present, there will be hard hitting questions and topics that I am not addressing here.

But I will continue seeking and ask for your help in the journey.

Bolt

Forgive me as there was more at COT but I waited too long for this backblast.

We got our 28+ at The Colosseum

We had a total of 28 guys in The Fort region post yesterday (Monday, Feb 26) amidst the rain so I threw out the challenge of getting 28 men out to the Colosseum this AM. With some help from Jeckyll, Pusher, Ginsu, Cha Ching and a few others, we got that done. The PAX made it even better when that was just the boot camp number as we totaled 31 with our 3 runners included.

I can not even begin to tell you how humbled I was to see headlight after headlight roll in and to have 27 other guys run around this AO at 0515 with me. As Assassin mentioned in COT, we do in fact know how special it is to be blessed with the opportunity to be out with the PAX on just another Tuesday morning. To see some faces out there that I haven’t seen in quite a while was great. With the chatter that ensued, I knew I had better bring it.

So after our disclaimer and the departure of the Pathfinder runners, us boot campers jogged to end of the back parking lot. We counted off to our number of 27  at the time and dropped down for a 2min plank followed by a 2min reverse plank. Well 90 seconds into that latter plank, we had a masked ninja run up to join us for our lucky number 28. That ninja also goes by the name STRAIGHT UP  and man, it was good to have him join us.

1/2 of 28 equals 14 Burpees so that is what we did followed by 28reps of the following:

Dying Cockroach, Boats & Canoes, Jumping Lunges, Jump Squats, X&O’s, American Hammers, Monkey Humpers and Squat Calf-Raises

We partnered up for:

Partner 1: Run to the 1st speed bump and back
Partner 2: Diamond Merkins then flap jack

Partner 1. Run to the 3rd speed bump and back

Partner 2: Merkins then flap jack

Partner 1: Run to the gate that was no longer in existence

Partner 2: Carolina Dry Docks or some ab work then flap jack

Bring it back to the GHMS side of the bus parking lot and circle up for some coupon work.

Begin with the 30lb Ruck and 35lb Kettle Bell on opposite sides of the circle. When the coupon came to you, 10 bicep curls of your choosing while the rest of the PAX cycled through Freddy Mercury, Rosalitas and Flutter Kicks.

Five for Six at the Varsity

Typical Varsity style the number of Pax was low but the pain was high on a beautiful morning to post.
The year is short so far but there are already two major learnings through my word of the year and the short time on the Journey
  • My lack of emotional presence is a huge factor in my relationship challenges with my wife and kids… my word is NOW and much of that is learning to be more present
  • If bearing fruit is the yard stick by which you measure your abiding in Christ then I have a long way to travel on my journey because as I look at the fruit I bear it is a little under ripe and the yield is not high.
Rule of the day – 3 Burpees on every transition between exercises.
All Hands Mosey to band parking lot with a single rule (the hands must touch the ground with every step) – bear crawl, crab walk forward, lunge Walk with hands touching the ground, inch worms, crab walk backwards
Warm up at the band parking lot – Exercise run (50 out followed by 3 burpees)
– SSH, Imperial Walker, CCD, Mountain Climbers
Six man fail 100 yard run on regular exercises, 200 yard run on ab exercises
– Merkins
– Dips
– CCD
– LBC
– Plank
and a few others thrown in their by the pax
Wall work
– Balls to the wall
Mosey to COT… regular style.
It is always an honor to lead this group.  AYE!

The Baby Yeti

It was a beautiful morning…not too warm, not too cold, a bit breezy, and a bit of a foggy gloom.  Perfect!

Attendance was light…but today was The Yeti CSAUP.  In honor of all those men running in the main attraction for the day, we did a Baby Yeti at The Yard

We started out with a mosey around the back of the school for the following warmup:

  • 15 SSH’s
  • 15 Imperial Walkers
  • 15 Moroccan Nightclubs
  • 10 Windmills

Off we went on another mosey, continuing around the property towards the bus entrance.  We stopped at the bottom of the hill and partnered up.  The first partner would run to the top of the hill, two light poles away, while the other performed a series of exercises.  Those exercises were as follows:

  • Wide Arm Merkins
  • Squats
  • Shoulder Taps
  • Monkey Humpers

We talked a bit about the word(s) of the month, worry/anxiety and how it makes us feel.  Then, after the talking portion of this program, In true Yeti style, off we went with another mosey to our next pain station for more of the same type of thang, just with the following exercises:

  • LBC’s
  • Carolina Dry Docks
  • Hand Release Merkins
  • Overhead Hand Claps

We had a little time for Short Sale to share ways he tries to fight the worry/anxiety of this world…Then we were back on the run again…to a super secret hideaway in the woods that my 2.2 (she attends Fort Mill Elementary) told me about.  At the top of a little known set of wooden stairs, up into a clearing in the woods you will find BENCHES!  They are perfect for dips, irkins, and derkins.  So we ran the following circuit:

  • 10 Dips, Double Count, in Cadence
  • 10 Irkins, Single Count, in Cadence
  • 10 Derkins, Single Count, in Cadence
  • 10 Count
  • 20 Dips, Double Count, in Cadence
  • 10 Irkins, Single Count, in Cadence (Was supposed to be 20, but these guys were spent)
  • 10 Derkins, Single Count, in Cadence
  • 10 Count
  • 10 Dips, Double Count, in Cadence
  • 10 Irkins, Single Count in Cadence

Then we headed back to COT for some stretching.  It was something that Stang did at the END of the workout the day before at Slow Burn, and it was very well received.  I’m thinking of incorporating that into my Q’s as I see real value in it.

Thanks to Short Sale, Spitz, and Lugnut for coming out this morning.  It was literally the first workout I have Q’d with only Respectible’s in attendance…and boy do I respect them!  As for me…#norespect

PREBLAST: 2018 at Guidance – PAX Support Needed

We have kicked off 2018 at Children’s Attention Home / Guidance!!

Rock Hill’s Dawg Pound is Co-Q for the Site/AO!! Woo wooo!!! He will bring Rock Hill energy to Guidance and help elevate it to new levels. We are super excited for his leadership!! Thank you Dawg Pound!!

The definition of “Guidance” is advice or information aimed at resolving a problem or difficulty, especially as given by someone in a position of authority or influence. It is also the directing of the motion or position of something towards a goal or objective.

That is exactly what we as F3 Nation intend to do, and this is where the young men need your help for the impact will be greater in numbers than alone.

We know there is alot of curiosity towards CAH, that the young men down there may not be within your comfort zone. Well it is time to step out of that comfort zone and embrace them. The young men there are in their early teens, at a vulnerable stage of great influence (good or bad). Life thrust upon them a situation that they did not ask for, and they need our love, time, support, strength, wisdom……our Guidance. Each one of them are smart, witty, and funny, but they are a close knit group working to get through life at CAH together and you can tell they lean on each other, some are hesitant to open up to outsiders.

They are not too different than some of us PAX in that they sometimes feel that they have to carry their burdens themselves and solve their own problems. They need to know that there are people out in the world they can rely on, they can trust to ‘have their back’ and lift them up when they are down, and they are part of something He has planned that is bigger than themselves. Within each one of them, hidden beneath their burdens, is a Leader and HIM. Some just do not know or realize this. This is where we as HIMs need to be Intentional and lead them through our example via the mission, principles, and foundations of F3. Now I humbly ask all area PAX and HIMs to come support this great and worthy cause.

General info for posting:

  • The first workout was 1/20/18, then the workouts are every other Saturday (2/3, 2/17, 3/3, and so on).
  • Workouts start at 4pm prompt so arrive early to prep
  • For directions, contact NASA, Dawg Pound, Decibel, Chicken Wing, Reborn, or Chicken Hawk
  • They do not want the street address or directions to their site posted online
  • Pictures or videos of the young men there are not allowed
  • These are teen boys – bring your sense of humor for they have one for sure (nothing like a fart mid-LSS to get the giggles going).
  • Trash talk – kind trash talk – is almost mandatory. Bring it if you have it.
  • 2.0’s are allowed – and encouraged – as long as they are boys over 12

If you want to Q a workout:

  • Contact NASA or Dawg Pound
  • Q schedule is on the Rock Hill tab on the Google Docs link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mfnvJ9faf5NVFU9afWW4IDWBxJglS-4YFzZx39RGa4M/edit#gid=1726409880
  • Keep it to 30 or so minutes of workout, 30 minutes of something fun – they love basketball and football
  • Explain F3 and give the disclaimer at the beginning of each workout as usual
  • This is not a high-intensity PAX beatdown or CSAUP – these are teens in collective average shape.
  • Avoid a run-only workout as well.
  • Make it challenging yet attainable by them.
  • BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN…..but at the same time we want these young me to be challenged physically and mentally while achieving the goals you set for them.
  • We will be able to use the areas around the home which include Winthop University lake, the field at First Christian Church, the field behind the factory nearby, and the CAH grounds themselves.
  • In order to give them rest times – use the power of your words. Hold a short devotion incorporating the Monthly Theme that our regions are using; speak about what F3 means to you and what it has done in your life; or give them an example of a rough time in your life and how you overcame it. You can do this more than once during the workout – before the workout, after the COP, during your Thang, and before/after the COT. Keep in mind words are just words but if they have meaning, emotion, intention – they become much more powerful and impactful.
  • Engage the young men – when using your words, get them involved in the discussions through questions. Let them show you how intelligent they can be.
  • Pictures or videos of the young men there are not allowed
  • For the Name-O-Rama – please use only first names, ages, and then F3 name
  • Post a BackBlast!! I’d like this done within 48 hrs. This is marketing of the workout to build interest throughout the regions. Guidance is now live on the F3 The Fort web!

Thank you all for the support you have provided in the past and we look forward to this new year at the Children’s Attention Home. Please be praying that God will bless our efforts there so that we can build up young males that will one day be leaders in the community and beyond.

Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. Vince Lombardi

Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved. These young men need our strength, our commitment, our effort to bring out the Leaders that lie within.
We need your help. All it takes is 1 hour of your time, every other week. That’s only 24 hours out of the 8,760 you will be blessed with in this year.

We hope to see you all at Guidance. Thank you and God bless.

Aye!

BAM!

Conditions were near perfect this morning in The Fort. 65 degrees, clear skies, nice breeze meant that we have optimal weather for bettering ourselves. We started off with a quick disclaimer, set up the BAM in the workout (Burpees, American Hammers(IC), and Merkins (SC). We started with a 5-10-15 and each time BAM was called incremented by 1…6-12-18 and so on.

We started off and immediately Chicken Hawk calls ‘BAM’. I think he must have been testing the system out, it worked 10 steps into the mosey, we did the 5-10-15 and proceeded with the mosey to the bus loop.

Did some dynamic stretching, toy soldiers, butt kickers, high knees and then took another mosey past the playground to the back parking lot.

Circled up for PAX led warmup, SSH, LBCs, Windmills, CDDs, Peter Parkers, and Parker Peters. Now that we were all warmed up and a few more BAMs called out, we did some leg work.

Single leg hops – R for 75 yards
Single leg hops – L for 75 yards
Ski jumps at an angle for 75 yards
BAM!! 7-14-21
Lunge
Backward lunge

Mosied to back wall.

BAM! 8-16-24
Aussie Mountain Climbers – 15 degree, 10 count, 45 degree, 10 count, BTTW 10 count, 45 degree 10 count, 15 degree 10 count.
BAM! – 9-18-27
WALL Sits – 10 count each PAX
Wall Tar Jai – 10 count each PAX

That was a winner!

Mosied to SMS loop.

Last BAM! was spread out over the loop performing one of the exercises at each corner.

Proceeded to COT with some SSH in the middle for a rest.

At COT had time for 1 minute of Freddies and we were done!!

Thanks to all for pushing each other and to Jiffy for having YHC as Q.

Great work today.

COT.

Prayers to those families affected by tragedy in Florida, but also those who are dealing with the lead up to those flash points across the country.

You’re making the easy exercises suck

5 PAX showed up on a picture perfect morning. We grabbed our bells and strolled up to the top of the pick up lane.

Circled up and immediately dropped to a plank. Peter Parker

Honeymooner/Downward Dog

Parker Peter

Imperial walkers

Sugarbug told me these next exercises I was ruining because they were the easy ones.

Held Al Gore and did morracan nightclubs and overhead claps

The Main Event:

20 KB Swings and 10 Merkins, then run a lap

20 Swings and 9 Merkins., lap. You can probably sense a pattern here. I quickly shortened the lap since the full drop off lane was a tad ambitious.

After 200 Swings and 55 Merkins, I wanted to try something that would make anyone watching the security footage question our sanity. We bunny hopped through the parking space posts like a slalom course.

Next, we lunge walked along the pillars of the drop off lane and did 20 squats at the halfway point. Continued our lunges and squats for a total of 3X. Then we bearcrawled the last half of the pillars stopping at each one for 3 CDD.

Circled up for a PAX called exercise for 5 minutes.

COT

I want to thank Polaroid for the opportunity to lead these HIM on a beat down. I feel somewhat guilty that I was able to take a nap after while the others had to go to work. One verse that has been in my head all morning is from Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.”
