Finding what’s pleasing to Christ

  • QIC: Chicken Hawk
  • When: 2/13/17
  • Pax: Cotton Eye, TPS, Assassin, Change Order, Straight Up, Librarian, Spitz, Tesh
  • Posted In: The Armory

9 men posted this morning to encourage and make each other better!  The wind was whipping but the temperatures were warm so the chatter was ‘a plenty.  Spitz joined us and took the chatter below the belt which will give us reminders that some may want to forget.

Message

  • This month we are talking about being intentional.  A verse that comes to mind is Ephesians 5:10, “Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.”  Do you know what is pleasing to Christ? Vs those things that don’t please him?
  • What is pleasing to Christ?  How about being in prayer, life group doing life with a group, being in his word?  Why does he need you doing these things?  He needs us to be a model for other non-believers to look at and he will do the rest in changing their heart and/or encouraging them through you.

Slow warm up mosey around the parking lot then back to the starting position.

COP – SSH, Hillbilly walkers, merkins, stretches

Four square (starfish) with pass throughs and 10 overhead squats at center, pass throughs to next corner

 – 20 kb arm merkins

 – 20 high pulls

 – 20 plank rows

 – 20 curls

Take  a break with some suicides x 2 rounds

Round two with duck walk with weights overhead with 5 burpee in middle

 – 20 arm extensions

 – 20 1 arm shoulder press

 – 20 big Os

 – 20 verticals chest press

Mosey to Knee wall – partner up – while partner runs lap around wall x 2

 – kb derkins

 – skull crushers

End with 2 minutes with Mary.

Honored to serve and humbled to serve.

Lucky 5

  • QIC: Senator Tressel and Bolt
  • When: 02/10/17
  • Pax: Decibel, Change Order, Crash (LIFO)
  • Posted In: Alcatraz

A small, but mighty group of 5 men met at Runde Park for another Saturday of fun. Here is what we did:

The Thang:

6:30 came and went and the Q’s were not around – whoops!  Co-Q’s YHC and Bolt went a little longer on the pre-run,  and found the parking lot empty of Pax when we returned from our little jaunt.  The Pax took the initiative to get started without us and we found them rounding the corner of the running path at about 6:35   After our sincere apologies for tardiness, there was no need for a disclaimer so we continued with a dynamic warm up of knee pulls, ankle pulls, lunge walk with a twist, back stretches, arm circles and toy soldiers.    Then, off we went:

Senator Tressel on Q

Mosey out of the park and take Windward drive down the steep hill at Tara Tea.  Hang a right on Mariana drive and go all the way to the stop sign, and then hang a left to the cul-de-sac for COP.

COP (all in cadence):

SSH x 40, Merkin x 10, Cherry Picker x 15, Diamond Merkin x 10, Squat x 25, CDD x 15, IW x 25, Morrocan Night Club x 40 (after about 20  reps, we broke the circle and the Q led them down Mariana Court).  We completed the MNC’s while walking, then stopped at the end of a driveway for 25 American Hammers and 40 Mountain Climbers.

Mosey back to Runde and to the playground for:

10 pull ups, 20 Derkins, and 20 Flutters. (Rinse and repeat for a total of 3 cycles)

Hand off to Bolt

Mosey out of the play area and head to the big hill behind the park:

At about 2/3’s the way down the hill, there was a list for FOLTS.  FOLTS stands for:

Flutters

One Leg Press (balance and leg strength)

LBC’s

Toe Raises

Squats

For FOLTS, we paired up and took turns running up and down the hill, and doing the exercise listed.  We finished when each pair had run up and down the hill 5 times and completed each exercise.

After FOLTS, we all moseyed back to the park and found a 30, 40, and 50 lb sandbag waiting for us.  The Q set up 6 stations:

  1.  Burpees
  2. 30 lb lunge walk to red line and back
  3. Superman hold
  4. 40 lb lunge walk to red line and back
  5. LBC’s (I think?)
  6. 50 lb lunge walk to red line and back

Naked Man Moleskin

When we took off from the park, the air was cool and dry, and the sky was especially bright, even before daybreak.  It was another beautiful morning at Runde and ideal F3 weather.    After the Q’s took our admonishment for being late for the start, we got down to business and took an easy jog up the hill to the cul-de-sac at Mariana’s Court.  I took the group there a long time ago and Decibel remembered it as we ran up the hill.   For COP, we kept our voices low (also known as ‘sexy count’) because we were surrounded by houses close by and didn’t want to disturb those still asleep.  Although we were small in numbers today, there was still a good amount of chatter, but surprisingly Change Order had no inappropriate comments to say.

Crash had to leave after the first half and  missed the lunge walks with the sandbags, which were harder than I thought they would be.  I definitely felt those later in the day.

For COT, I copied what Gears did last week  because I really liked it.   Since we had just 3 people at COT, he had each of us ask for a prayer or express a praise for something in our lives.  It was much more personal,  and for most people (myself included), much easier to open up in front of a small group than in front of a large circle of guys.  So, if you are reading this, remember it the next time you Q a work out and you have a small number of people.  Ask each man in the group what might be troubling him or what is going great in his life.  It’s something that might get missed if you think ‘bummer – only a few showed up’ or ‘we had small numbers today.’  Take advantage of that opportunity and get to know your brothers better.  It makes a difference.

It was a pleasure, as always,  to lead the group this morning.  Thanks for the great co-Q, Bolt,  and I look forward to our next one.  Indeed, our numbers were small today, but it was great getting to know each man better, and we were lucky to be able to do that.

Announcements/Prayers/Praises

Children’s Attention Home back up and running.  Saturdays at 4pm.

Yeti next week (02/18).  Check the preblast for details and be sure to sign up.

Read your newsletter!

Prayers for a one with work stress and money,  a son’s anxiety at school, guidance with F3’s continuing work in the Paradise neighborhood.

Prayers for an F3 member and his family going through a difficult time right now.

Praises for a new job and success!

Great to Return Home with the Six

  • QIC: Cornhole
  • When: 02/07/17
  • Pax: Senator Tressel, Speed Wagon, Cha-Ching, Hee-Hay, 56 , Cooter, Kielbasa, Sauerkraut, Cash Flow, Bird Cage Dark Helmet Hi Hat
  • Posted In: Block Party

When Double D asked me to take the Q, I noticed my palms began to sweat.  I know you’re thinking, Cornhole sweating that’s not surprising.  Anyway, I started thinking, when’s the last time I’ve Q’d or even been to WEP outside of Convergent type activities.  Question’s started forming like: Do they still work out in the grass?  Do they use the hill?  Where is the closet parking lot?  Where is this Stairway to Heaven they mentioning in the back blasts?  Is that near the gun shop?  Deep Breath! You’ve Q’d lots of workouts.  Relax.  Think. Think.

After revisiting the purpose of this AO is to relearn things forgotten and helping others I knew exactly what I would focus on.  As Q’s “YHC included here” we are always thinking of ways to push each other and usually focus our attention on challenging the fittest PAX that show up and secretly hoping that those less able chose another AO.  As a result, the six is left chasing the group, sometimes catching the group just in time for them to take off again.  Having spent and still spending a great deal of my beat downs as the six I know this doesn’t need to be the case.

The Thang,
Dynamic Warm up using paved path around park (Light Jogs, High Knees, Butt Kickers, Side Shuffles)  Stopping at Corners to perform 10 ea in cadence: SSH, Slow Squat, Mt Climbers, Lounger, Merkin.  Mosey to next corner with dynamic exercises.  By doing this Run, Stop, Exercise, Run again allows PAX to stay together, lots of mumble chatter and modification by those that need it.

After the first round had PAX perform the cadence counts.  Started with those that have never Q’d a workout.  Everyone did great.  There were some adjustments/heckling needed but that’s why we practice.  Look forward to attending one of your Q’s in the near future.

Mosey to Playground (Partner Up – Size does not matter)
P1 makes a lap around playground (When did they add on that other section?)
P2 Performs Exercise,
Flapjack 2x Pull-ups, LBC’s until all finished – Yes this includes you Dark Helmet
Then CDD, LBC’s until all finished
Russian Dips LBC’s until all finished
For some reason YHC kept forgetting to take the second lap appreciate Cha-Ching holding me accountable.

Discussed story from The Swamp a couple weeks ago and how our intentionality of posting to workouts, 2nd F’s and 3rd F’s is bringing awareness to others.  Shows that we are a group that takes action.  Disciplined to not let the elements, others judgments sway our actions.  Committed to holding ourselves and others accountable.

Mosey to COT.
Thanks Double D for reaching out and holding me accountable.  Was great to get back to Block Party.

Honored to lead and follow this morning.  This is a very lively group and will definitely be back to take part in one of your Q’s.

Full Moon Fever At The Yard

  • QIC: QuickBooks & Drop Thrill
  • When: 02/11/17
  • Pax: Gilmore, Magnum, Deep Dish, Ditch Witch, Bart Man, Nomad, Hasselhoff, QuickBooks, Cottoneye, Drop Thrill
  • Posted In: Millllkshake

Ten high impact men appeared out of the gloom to get stronger and push each other along.  QuickBooks and I were there to poke the bears as it were.

The first half(ish) we played around on the basketball court after COP.

After everyone was split up we did the following, all in cadence each round being five, ten, fifteen or twenty of each:

  • Squats
  • Single Leg Lunges
  • Air Dead Lifts
  • Merkins
  • LBC’s
  • Reverse Crunch
  • (Hello) Dolly
  • Superman
  • Flutters

As every time I q this workout, I always have doubts I’ve made a wise choice about half way into it.  But we survived and you guys pushed through.  Great work!

Next up I handed the reigns to QuickBooks who had his eye on the rock pile.  It’s hilarious how I’ve been to so many AO’s now and almost all of them have random rock piles laying around, just waiting…

So we partner up and partner one runs up the hill with their rock buddy while partner two performs called exercise at the bottom of the hill.

When partner one is back, partner two runs the hill and grabs the rock and heads back down the hill and flapjacks.

We had time for about three rounds then headed to COT after depositing our rock buddies back in their home.

After YHC’s six was finally in the circle we called it a day.

Great work brothers, great to finally get my first Fort lead under my belt.  Thanks QuickBooks for taking us out and killing whatever muscle use we had for the rest of the day.

Always an honor to lead and be in the brotherhood.

DT out.

Soggy Bottoms PoopDeck Beatdown

Yeah, yeah, yeah.  I know this BB is late. Like I’m embarrassed it’s so late. But hey, I owe it to the guys that put in the work to fulfill my duty as the QIC.

As I finished feeding my youngest daughter at 3:30 in the morning knowing that I had to get up for this Q at 4:30 I was dreading the rain that I could hear on my window. Miraculously my alarm went off and I was able to man up and get into my truck and head to the poop deck my favorite Thursday morning option AO.  At the ten after five mark their were cars in the parking lot and people started exiting into the Gloom awaiting the Beatdown that was to be had. I had to muscle up some Q strength and scrounge up some energy to put it into high gear for these fellow men; 7 total it was. Now onto the thing:

Disclaimer was disclaimed before a mosey around the shops to count cats.

Circle up for a good old dose of side straddle hop. Then a round of low slow squats,  Followed by Parker Peters and then Peter Parker’s.

Next up we had some hand release merkins.  We did a set of ten in cadence then we did a circle of merkin where we all hold a plank and then each person goes around wave style and does 1 hand release merkins on their own. It was so fun the first time around we decided to rinse and repeat.

Now that everybody’s chest and shoulders are feeling real nice we switched it to the lower body.  Starting off with a circle of monkey humpers wave style of course 10 each everyone else holds. Then we got the pleasure of doing some crossover lunges across the parking lot, those left us feeling great so we went ahead and took it over to the curb for some quick feet and some line work.  Here we jump across the line back and forth. Then repeat doing single leg left, right, then double feet across the line then flip it around and come back.  Calves we starting to burn so more calf work seemed appropriate. Over to the curb for some curb work going up and down the curb to get those legs hot and inflamed. Still have plenty of time so we took it on down near the dock at the boat launch and did a little pick your poison; each pack calling out an exercise and then running a loop around the boat launch parking lot while the rest of the pack performed the exercise. Don’t remember every exercise but I know there was some Cha-Cha merkins, some double leg jumps, single leg mountain climbers, bomb jacks, American hammers, freddie mercuries and some plank holds.

After all the fun down at the boat launch we moseyed back up for name a rama,  announcements and ball a man always a pleasure gentlemen.

NMMS
This past year has been a whirlwind with the excitement of expanding our family from 4 to 5 only followed by the dagger of losing the baby after a few appointments. Then the healing and growth that comes with prayer and time was capped off with a miracle conception that the Dr even described it as a chemical pregnancy but the Lord knew his plan all along. The complications that followed for the next 31 weeks and 2 days were some of the hardest burdens I’ve ever faced but through it all I’ve shared the burden with many HIMS that prayed and supported my whole family through this difficult time.
http://biblehub.com/matthew/11-28.htm
Says come to Jesus and help will give you rest.
This past year has been so difficult but has caused me to swallow my pride and open up to complete strangers about what I’m afraid of as a man, a father, a husband, and a follower of Christ. I’ve allowed myself to be vulnerable, which has taught me that I’m not alone on this journey on the big ball, and can lean on my fellow brothers and as one, call upon the Lord to lighten our burdens.
Everything’s worked out according to his will and his plan and I’m so grateful for the support, the encouragement, and the time spent with fellow PAX during this journey.
I’m a better man as Olaf than I was as Garrett thanks to F3.
Thanks for taking the time to read such a long winded tardy sleep deprived recount of the past year all stimulated by being offered the honor of Q’ing in such a great group.

Wishin I was Fishin at Footloose

  • When: 02/09/17
  • Pax: Anchorman, Barry Manilow, Culture club, Gilmore, Cotton eye, Deep dish, Drop Thrill
  • Posted In: Footloose, The Fort

Started out in the gloom with a moon lit morning and a balmy 50ish degrees for the thang.  Proper disclaimer given and a little foreplay regarding the word of the month “intentional”.  We decided to be intentional to get in 30 active minutes of movement during our time.  Barry challenged us to see if it could be done.  Our theme centered around some fishing secrets.

Warm-up – Mosey around the parking lot.  One thing you don’t want to do while tournament fishing is SWIM! 15-SSH, 15-Windmills, 15-Imperial Walkers, 10-Merkins, 20-Squats

The Thang – The key to any fishing tournament is to make sure you have a BIG FISH to put you in the money.  We started out spelling BIG FISH. Do 5 then run to white line do 5 more run and turn round do 5 more, run do 5 more. 20 in total. Exercises were Bobby Hurley’s, Imperial Walkers, Gorilla Humpers, Flying Squirrels, Imperial squat walkers, Seal Jacks, and Hillbilly Walkers.  We worked in a few 10 counts to catch our breath.  Since we had plenty of time left I told the guys what’s better than having 1 big fish is having 2 big fish.  So repeat.  That was a horrible idea.  We finished up with 5 minutes for Mary PAX choice.

Name-o-rama, announcements and prayers.  Continue to be intentional with our relationships at home and work.

See you on the water!  <><

PS we did hit the 30 minutes of continuous movement.  Thanks for the challenge Barry.

Laps of Joy at the Ranch

  • QIC: Mainframe
  • When: 02/09/2017
  • Pax: MacGyver, Ginsu, SugarBug, Cash, Dixie Chicken, Orwell, Novocain, Axl, Hauscha, 2 mystery runners, Mainframe
  • Posted In: The Ranch

Another mild non-winter morning at the Ranch. While pulling in saw 4 PAX rumbling out toward the street so I was hoping some guys were staying around for my portion. Thankfully that wasn’t a real concern as several PAX gathered. Time to go so disclaimer was kind of given and off we went. Mosey over to front of middle school and circle up for normal warm ups: 25-SSHs, 15-Hillbilly Walkers, 10-Windmills, 10-Merkins, 15-Mtn Climbers, 15-Peter Parkers, & 25-MNCs.

I decided to use the loop in front of the Middle School today for some different lap types.

  • Lap 1 – 10 Burpees, 10 single leg squats each leg, 20 dips, run 1/2 lap, 15 CDDs, 15 Donkey kicks, then run last 1/2 of lap.
  • Lap 2 (aka Ab lap) – Try to keep feet in air during each group. 20 toe touch crunches & 10 baby circles each way. Run 1/3 lap. 20 flutters & 20 freddy mercs. Run 1/3 lap. 20 hello dollies & 20 rosalitas. Run 1/3 lap.
  • Lap 3 – Each PAX grab a parking curb (what the heck do you call those things?). 10 square jumps (forward, over curb, backward, over curb), 20 merkins with one arm on curb, 10 flying squirrels, 20 merkins with other arm on curb, 10 square jumps in other direction. Run 1/2 lap. 20 squats, 20 seal jacks. Run 1/2 lap.
  • Lap 4 – Lt Dan (lunge, lunge, squat) from 1st speed bump to 2nd, jog to 3rd, bear crawl to 4th (way too far), backward run to 5th, sprint back to 1st.
  • Lap 5 – Run to 1st speed bump, 15 mtn climbers & 15 plank jacks, run to 2nd speed bump, 10 merkins, 10 diamond merkins, and 10 wide arm merkins….times up, mosey back to COT.

I tried to throw a little bit of everything in today and try to keep us somewhat together. Great job by all the PAX today and great to see some newer guys sticking with this F3 thing!

I shared a little between laps about living intentionally. Living intentionally means doing the things that are important even when they’re not easy (i.e. getting out of bed at some crazy early time each morning to work out). But the point that really stuck out to me was: Define your values and make choices that reflect those values.

Thanks to Backdraft for the opportunity to Q. Always an honor to lead this group of men!

Logging out,

Mainframe

5 brave HIM showed up at The Hive for a beat down and message on “True Worth”.  YHC had thought a lot about “worth” over the past week and decided to share a message from The Go-Giver (great book by the way).

The Law of Value:  Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

The PAX, and YHC, thought about this during the pain.

COT:

SSH x 25

Squats x 2 (hold peoples chair)

The Thang:
