Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Ruck/Run Shadow Event

  • QIC: Tinsel
  • When: 09/10/2021
  • Posted In: Chupacabra

PAX,

As we approach the 20th anniversary of 9/11 we honor the fallen heroes through the Travis Manion Foundation, unfortunately they didn’t have a Charlotte chapter this year so I’ve created a private shadow event for the 5K ruck/run.

We had  a great turnout for the TMF WOD to honor 1st Lt Travis Manion at 52 PAX and my goal for this event is to reach at least 75 PAX, let’s show TMF what F3 The Fort and F3 Lake Wylie are made of… feel free to spread the word, you can ruck or run the 5K.

We’ll launch from Chupacabra at 0500 on 9/10/21, all paces welcome and you will get a cool patch, shirt, race bag and swag.

You will not find this shadow event in the TMF main page so please follow this link:

https://www.travismanion.org/events/911-heroes-run/2021-private-shadow-events-registration/

then follow directions in the attached PDF below to register, don’t forget to use code GORUCK15 for 15% off:

Mini-training day

(For the record since it’s been a while since I’ve posted a backblast, I actually wrote this the morning after the workout and sadly it took me another fully week and then a couple days to copy and paste it…at least I’m making some kind of backblast progress…)

Aren’t all days in a sense training days?

Today, 9 men gathered, 3 had miles on their minds so split off for laughs and miles but could have just been laughs and coffee as YHC wasn’t there to witness.  Regardless, 6 men set off for the unknown.  Before any setting off happened, we had ourselves a little warm-up.

Slick: 20 SSH, 10 man makers, 25 SSH, 5 man makers

With heart rates higher than 5 minutes ago, we rucked up, gathered our 3 sand bags, and headed towards the church parking lot.  Wait…we first had Mainframe and Maximus do a quick demo on how to transfer a sand bag the proper way since a majority of the crew is headed to GrowRuck Grandstrand next week.  Demo concluded and we trekked off.  At the arrival of the church, we did 2 group sand bag handoffs, somewhat successful, and started on the first pain station.

While 1 guy ran / shuffled, with ruck, around the church parking lot circle and acted as our timer, the remaining 5 did the following exercises:

  • Plank hold
  • Flutter
  • Merkins
  • Squats
  • Overhead ruck press
  • Upward row with ruck

Next, we got in a ball of man of sorts, but YHC asked the guys to close their eyes and “mix around” while all the time keeping our eyes closed.  The goal of this exercise was to play with our minds and remove our site so communication became key since vision was impaired.  During an event, it’s going to be dark and disorienting and a guy, or guys, will need to find their voice BUT, also be ready to listen.

  • Objective 1: organize ourselves by height from tallest to shortest in a single file line
  • Objective 2: organize ourselves by age (days matter) in a single file line

Objective 1 – fail by ¼-1/2 inch.  Tinsel is working out too much and has stunted his growth.  10 burpee penalty

Objective 2 – pass

In summary, communication is key, but details matter.  How much is too much communication?  Depends on the situation and if penalties are involved.

Loaded up and moved to the fire station with sand bag transfer happening and Ruck event war stories filling the early morning air!

Arrived at fire house and unloaded gear.  Next up was “jacob’s ladder” modified version.  1 end was burpees and other end was squat presses with ruck (so this was done slick).  Counting was starting at 7 for both exercises and working our way down to 1.  Finished this by 0555 with not a lot of time (underestimated distance to COT) to get back.  We did see the space shuttle walking back which filled more questions about alien invasions and why is that plane’s lights facing the wrong way, etc.

Made it back to COT where we did the normal….aside from ball of man which we may have done for those that were ok to participate.  I will tell you that it felt pretty awesome.

Thanks to Tinsel for the opportunity!

Shady

Travis Manion WOD PRE-BLAST

  • QIC: Tinsel
  • When: 05/07/2021
  • Posted In: Chupacabra

Join us for the Manion WOD, honoring 1stLt Travis Manion (USMC) and all of our nation’s heroes! You’ll break a sweat, build character, and walk away with a Manion WOD tee and a sweet patch!

Workout: 400 meter ruck, 29 back squats, 7 rounds

On April 29, 2007, experienced Iraq war veteran from the 1st Recon Battalion, 1stLt Travis Manion, and his fellow Marines were ambushed while searching a suspected insurgent house in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. As he led the counterattack against the enemy forces, Travis was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded teammates. His courageous acts allowed every member of his patrol to survive.

For his actions, Travis was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor. His legacy continues to grow through the work of TMF, inspiring people to make an impact by serving others.

WOD will be held on May 7th at 0500 at Chupacabra, register here, registration was extended until 4/26 :

Chupacabra 4.9.2021

Catch up BB 4/5.

YHC was all alone until 0514 when Divac rolled up with this Brother-in-law, Blockhead. I was ready to mail it in until then… fortunately they kept me accountable.

We worked through a painfully time consuming pyramid that took the entire 45 minutes of Chupacabra. It was great.

No Strap Privilege Ruck around lot

Pyramid work. Do round one with 5 reps, do round two with 5 reps, add second exercise at 10 reps. Work up to all five movements 5-25 reps. Work back down by eliminating. We made it 75% of the way through.

Bear Crawl/Crawl Bear Pyramid – 5 spaces BC/CB

5 8-Count Body Builders

10 Lunge w/OH hold

15 Ruck Thrusters

20 Flutters w/press

25 Curls

Ruck w/OH Hold to COT

Punch List out.

Last min Charge at Chupercabra

YHC was feeling saucy so I took up the challenge to Q the ruck workout only because it was going to be Lutefisks virgin ruck experience. I usually can’t post to Rivergate on Fridays because I have a journey meeting that starts at 6 bells over in Baxter. So to make sure the PAX get their money’s worth I showed up to preruck at 445 to make sure all of the cones were ready to go. MileHigh joined me around 500 for a quick lap around the parking lot to get introduced to the feats of strength written on each cone.
We got almost an entire full lap before swinging back by StartEx to grab the rest of the cronies for the official party.
Disclaimer was disclaimed as we were rucking to the first cone.
Idea is to keep everyone together while still pushing each man to his limit. A modified Paula Abdoole was described and the exercises were as follow:
Penguins,
Shoulder taps,
Hand release Merkins,
8 count body bag builders,
Ruck getups,
Ruck curls,
Scooby Doos-AKA ruck rows,
Squat thrusters,
Lunges,
Ruck swings,
Man makers,

The Guys did a really good job of performing the exercises and hustling to the next stop which is two cones up before coming back to the cone that was skipped. Keep pushing the pax and doing the work.
Great to see everyone’s smiling faces this morning. DaVinci thanks for the opportunity to lead. Hate I had to bounce before COT but I needed to be at The Journey before 6 more than I needed those last few reps.

Stay frosty my friends.

The 700 Club Returns

This morning we reminisced on an oldie but goodie brought to us by Cheddah two short years ago. The fabled 700 Club isn’t what you think it is, and golly it hurts.

The PAX showed up one by one and two by two as YHC greeted each. The question of the morning was: have you done a GORUCK event? If so, what events? For the two with the least experience, today they learned a few things. Two Ferns and Dinghy were chosen as the Team Leader (TL) and Assistant Team Leader (ATL).

We rucked/shuffled to our destination in the Home Depot lot, and the weinke was laid out. The TL and ATL were to lead the PAX in completing 7 exercises at 100 repetitions each, in any manner they pleased. If counts were mixed up or time ran out before finishing, a penalty was due.

The seven movements were:

Hand Release Ruck Merkins

Ruck Squats

Ruck Curls

Ruck Swings

4-Count Flutters w/Press

Big Boy Sit Ups

Overhead Ruck Press

Two Ferns and Dinghy got us to working, and somehow we had finished 100 squats before doing half of the other movements. The veterans jumped in to help the TL and ATL get better, and it was a solid showing of how a team can execute a goal during a GORUCK event. We finished all except for 25 Flutters and 40 Hand Release Merkins before time ran out.

As a result of the lack of completion, strap privileges for the rucks were taken away for the ruck back to COT. At about the halfway point the rucks were to be held overhead. That wasn’t pleasant.

In all, the PAX did work and everybody learned a thing or two about leading a team. Solid work, men.

Punch List out.

The Sweati 2020

The Sweati 2020-
79 HIM took to The Forts annual summer CSAUP event. It was 78 degrees when 24 Ruckers launched from The Coliseum at 0530. They had their disclaimer and direction to the first of the 3 pain stations. Just After at 0600 54 runners took to the route. They departed and ran about 2.5 miles and got to meet Bones at Golden Corral for the first pain station. He worked them over as they came in for about 10-15 minutes. Once he finished dishing the pain they took off to Pantheon only about 1.5 miles up the Road. Fishsticks was waiting for sprints and pain. He had the PAX attention for another 10-15 minutes. Once they left they brought the route back to YHC. While waiting for the PAX to return and doing burpees I decided that my other two Qs most likely put the PAX through so much I would give them a choice. Either 20 burpees at 5 light poles with bear crawls in-between or they could buyout of it for a $50. going to our brother Cash. Most wanted to take on both challenges. We wore black for Cash and am still amazed at the Photos coming in from across the Country showing support to this HIM. We love you Cash. Here is a link to the pay-pal account if you feel you would like to support.
