Breaking Patterns

What a great morning for a run. Low 50’s, no wind and 20 PAX for a post P200 Monday. Up in the rotation today was the newest member of the Flight Plan plans, “Loops of Choice.” They include a 2.5 mile loop that goes over the walking trail at the end of YMCA parking lot, out 6th Baxter, up Sutton and back to Starbucks. And a 1.5 mile loop that goes down market, comes up Sutton and back to Starbucks. Modify as necessary, find a running buddy, have some fellowship, attend COT, check the box.

Flight Plan is an AO that’s predictable. Because of safety, we stay on the north side of 77. We have 4 routes and run each one, once per month. Today’s route emphasizes, (maybe represents is a better word) those circles we find ourselves in. Don’t get me wrong, the workout is beneficial. And I love the sense of accomplishment of conquering the long climb up Sutton (twice) in the gloom. However, the round and round is indicative of what can become of us as men.

But F3 is there to break those patterns. In COT we were reminded of that by two very strong PAX. Pusher (along w/ Twister & Change Order) who has taken the monumental task of leading Q-source. The weekly study of how this group can shape lives, of not just ourselves, but our families and community. If you’re not involved, you’re missing out. If you’ve been going, you know what I’m talking about. The added support outside of fellowship of the gloom, is great.

The other PAX is Stang. What happens when something throws us off these loops we find so comfortable. Something devastating or tragic.  Or what if we struggle just to stay upright on the loops but don’t feel like we can tell anyone so we use other outlets to hide the burden?  Stang is going to lead the discussion on these topics Wednesday at The Tomahawk (Doby’s Bridge Elementary – Kettle Bell). The last 15 minutes of the workout will be a stretching session with discussion on these heavy topics. Things we need to be able to share and discuss if we are going to be the leaders we need to be.

It’s great to see these HIMs pushing us past the 1st F.

IT was a fun filled day at The Ranch and the PAX worked hard and pushed each other. Message was about being prepared and no matter if its preparing for breakfast or for retirement, as a leader we need to be ready for the expected. Today my Director resigned from our team and company. We don’t know who our leader will be or what our organization will look like, but as leader of my work and home I need to look in the mirror and say, Get After It! There is no waiting to see where the chips fall,  but to get out in front and lead. Reflect on all things in your life and address those things that you need to get prepared for……finances, stronger marriage, tough talks with the kids and death. Don’t leave these for someone else to take care of.

Thanks Jiffy for the lead…..humbled and honored!!

Challenges at Golden Corral

Finishing my Golden Corral Q a week late with this backblast.

Late sub Q for NASA. Late tweet evening before. But arrived early at GC to set up cones for 2 loops, a smaller inner loop and larger outer loop. Had to change location of the inner loop as the kickboxers started arriving in that section of the parking lot.

Easy warmup jog with buttkickers, side slides and the like. Warmup included standards like SSH, WM, merkins, dancing MNC and learning to do the Goofball correctly

The smaller loop had 3 cones. One set of partners carried the 140# sandbag Worm together around the cones while the rest of the PAX did 3 burpees at each cone. Swap postiions, repeat.

Core exercises followed, then we ran the larger loop. 4 cones with exercise at each,. #1 20 squat jumps, #2 15 bombjacks, #3  10 CantRememberOneWeekLaterExercise  , #4 5 Apollo Ono’s each leg.

Rinse, repeat smaller loop, core, larger loop 3 x. Finished with a little jog and PAX helping to carry cones and Worm back.

Spoke some of serving during the workout. There are different ways to serve. We serve ourselves, we serve our family, we even serve many of our friends. I believe the call to serve extends to the community. There are certainly many ways to serve and hope everyone will seek their ways in 2019.

I was speaking to veteran PAX at this workout and they were open to “accepting” my challenge of drawing a date from a bag that represented a Q spot at our G-Fit Paradise workout . We are looking to get our G-Fit Q’s setup, but especially with PAX who have not led the AO there.

Q Source in progress!  Read your material and attend the discussions whenever you can!

Yeti in Feb.

Sign up for Joe Davis Run.

Prayers for family and friends.

The Spirit of the Pax

The skies were gloomy, but the spirit of 10 men was high as they kicked off their Saturday morning with another beat down at Runde Field.  Here is what they did:

The Thang:

Change Order on Q

Mosey on the path around Runde and circle up in the parking lot for COP

All in cadence:  SSH x 25, Hillbilly walker x 20, Windmill x 10, Merkin x 10, standing hamstring stretch (L/R), sitting IT band/buttock stretch (L/R)

Count off by 4 and break into groups for the Starfish.  At four corners of the parking lot, there were exercise listed.  Complete that exercise, go to the center and do 4 burpees, then move to the next corner.  The exercises were:

  1.  25 merkins
  2. 40 chest presses with a landscaping paver
  3. 30 squats
  4. 40 LBC’s

Rinse and repeat with intention.  The Pax were instructed to do the merkins with a closer arm stance and chest touching the ground, double the weight (2 pavers) on the chest presses, do deeper squats (hands touch the ground), and perform ‘loungers’ instead of LBC’s (legs pivot up and down with the torso)

Hand off to Senator Tressel

Line up for an indian run on Windward road and then mosey to the concession stand wall in the ball field.  Start at the far end of the wall, get in a BTTW position and then walk on your hands to the opposite end of the wall.  lunge walk to the 2nd base line, bear crawl across the field, and then lunge walk back to the starting point.  Rinse and repeat 2 more times.

Mosey to the playground and split into three groups.  Group one does 10 pull ups, group two does reverse step ups, and group three does Al Gores.  Rotate through all 3 exercises , then rinse and repeat 2 more times.

Mosey to the ball field and find a dry spot for 6 MOM

All in cadence:  Box cutter x 20, pretzel crunch x 20, boat/canoe x 3, American hammer x 20ish (lots of mumble chatter trying to throw off the Q).  End with the body destroyer.

COT

Naked Man Moleskin:

I  was happy to get the call from Change Order on Thursday night to co-Q  this workout.  The last time we Q’d together  was when we launched F3 Cincinnati in 2017.  It was great to have Photobomb back in action with us after a serious leg injury forced him out for several months.  Jekyll came in hot at around 6:45 and then provided the Pax with his usual one liners and mumble chatter.

T-claps to my co-Q for doing ‘Geronimo 10 counts’ today (and T-claps to Geronimo too).  Instead of our normal count to 10 as a rest break,  Change Order asked a member of the Pax how they came to F3 and what their F3 name meant.  YHC and Uber were asked today.    My start to F3 was through an email from DD (Dan Janick) who was just a casual acquaintance at the time.  He was trying to round up men for the very first F3 workout in Fort Mill.  My F3 name, Senator Tressel is a reference to Jim Tressel who was the football coach at my alma mater, Youngstown State University, before going on to fame, (and infamy), at Ohio State University.    The Senator part comes from ESPN’s Chris Fowler who used to call Tressel ‘The Senator’ because of his demeanor during games and during press conferences.  As a side note, F3 at the time was a much, much smaller entity, and Dredd and OBT came to help launch F3 Fort Mill.  Dredd named all of the FNG’s at that first workout at WEP.  Uber told us his F3 name came from the fact that his wife is German and also as a reference to first F3 workout when he told the Pax he was going to call for an Uber, rather than finish the workout.  I am pretty sure I was at that workout and remember him saying that at the bottom of the big hill behind the park.  Uber, if you read this, reach out and let me know if that’s correct.  I really like this idea of Geronimo 10 counts and decided to start using it when I Q.  I encourage other guys to do it to as a means to strengthen our 2nd F.

It was a gloomy morning for sure, but the Pax were in good sprits as evidenced by the mumble chatter and jokes before, during, and after the workout.     The 2nd F is alive and well at F3 The Fort!   It’s always a pleasure and privilege to lead such a fine group of men.

Announcements, prayers, and praises:

Q source, week 3.  If you haven’t attended yet, it’s never too late to join.

Getting better with bricks

Great Morning at The Ranch on Thursday. 12 men came to get stronger and better.  Theme of the month at The Ranch AO is Get Better.  Jiffy (AO Q) leading the way here on themes.  Asking the PAX, when you think of getting better, what words come to mind?  PAX answers with many great examples.  Included in there were #Commitment and #Consistency. When we have talked about leadership and disruption, often times, my mind goes towards having an epiphany or that “movie moment”.  But success can be found in getting base hit after base hit rather than going for the homerun.

Mosey toward the Elementary school to the newly discovered rock pile.  Grab 2 rocks size/weight of a brick.  Continue around backside of school.  Stop for some pearls on a string- SSH, Squat, M’ Nightclubs, shoulder press.  continue to back lot for pearls of the same.

More warm up so 5 burpees/take a lap x3. More pearls on a string.

Low Series

  • Bear crawl down- 10 Merk
  • Crawl bear back- 10 CDD
  • Lunge walk down- 10 Squat
  • Crab walk back- 10 Dips

Rinse/Repeat X3

Grab Bricks and head to bus/road entrance

BLIMP Accumulator (with bricks)

  • Burpee 5
  • Lunge 10
  • Imperial Walker 15
  • Merkin 20
  • Plank jack 25

Mosey back (long way) to rock pile, drop ’em and head to flag.

Great morning and outstanding chatter.  Thanks for the opportunity Jiffy

  • We Switzered to gather around and listing to Mr. Clean give a message and challenge to the PAX
    • I’m honored to speak with you today;
Tomorrow (Christmas night) is the 1 year anniversary of me and the kids finding Cindy (my wife) unconscious. She was immediately put on life support
Cindy died 3 days later from complications of MS and an addiction to alcohol
I thought our life was on cruise control. I was being non -purposeful and non intentional. Being a single parent and grieving thru the tragic death of a spouse has been unreal.A few things I have learned from this that I would like to share.

      1. I have a much deeper awareness of emotional health. I have been humbled. Being humble creates avenue for change and growth. My question to you is…are you vulnerable and humble enough to let brothers in to help you?? Are you humble enough to ask for him if you are escaping reality w addictions? Alcohol, porn, etc
      2. I have a more real relationship w Christ. At a time when I doubted Christ care for me and my children and his desire to help our family Christ stepped in and answered a very exact prayer request. If you have doubts about Christ, speak to me please. I would love to share with you what He alone has done.
      3. I am thankful for the suffering. It has brought our family closer together. Even though I and the kids are miss Cindy everyday, we have so much to be thankful. I am thankful for the life that we had w Cindy. I am thankful that she is suffering no more. I am thankful that Cindy is made as new. Most importantly, am thankful for the birth of Christ. He gives us HOPE for a better day.
    • My Challenge to you is Love Deeper and Speak Sweeter. — too often people speak disrespectfully of their spouses and children and parents. Words matter and we all need to choose them wisely. We need to hold each other accountable and “get our heads out of our asses” as you never know when that person will be taken from you.

YHC can’t thank Mr Clean enough for this message and his friendship. over the last 2 years we have grown together to be better Christ followers, better husbands and fathers. He is such a great leader and I’m blessed to have him in my life.

If you need someone like this in your life, reach out to me and we’ll get you set up as there are a boatload of HIMs in the PAX

********ALERT***********ALERT**********ALERT*********ALERT***********ALERT****************

It was time for some major announcements in leadership. YHC has led as NANTAN for The Fort region for about 15months. Prior to that I was Weasel Shaker and prior to that 3rdF Q and in-between Site Qs of Ranch, Ballroom, Crossroads,, ChicknWizdim, and led CSAUP teams at P200, Kiawah and others.

It was time to hand over the keys to this well oiled machine to a new leader. A man I’ve watched grow and lead in all 3 F’s and lead well. First got to know him well on the 2014 BRR 9 man team. I was asked to attend Colombia mission with with him in 2015 that he led. Have Qd many times with him and attended a retreat in Boone with him in 2017 and saw his heart for God, Family and the PAX of The Fort. In 2018 he led BEYOND and pushed men to not only dig deep physically but to stretch themselves emotionally and spiritually. This sealed it for me that this man understood leadership and that men needed to be Freed to Lead.

MAXIMUS is the new NANTAN of The Fort!

I personally am excited for this next chapter and look forward to more men being Freed to Lead by his example and inspiration. With this change, some other leaders have stepped up as well.

  • Weasel Shaker = Funhouse
  • 1stFQ = Royale
  • 2ndFQ = Wegmans
  • 3rdFQ = Gecko

I personally want to thank Old Bay for years of leadership and more importantly friendship. I true HIM who makes so much happen behind the scenes that there is no way The FORT would be where it is today without him.

Also, want to thank Anchorman for 2nd F Q during my time as Nantan, as well as all his leadership at Footloose, encouraging guys to push themselves and the many great ideas and ways to challenge the PAX. Appreciate you brother!

BOM – Gecko had great words to close out this convergence. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus and all of the Holidays, I pray we find JOY in everything and not take anything for granted. I appreciate all the PAX and my brothers of THE GLOOM.

The Deep – Literally the water was deep and coming sideways in 36 degrees!

Laying in bed and listening to the water running down the downspout on my house was discomforting. Realizing it was only going to be about 35 degrees made it even more agonizing. “If I was not Qing, would I still go?” YES and I have gone. In 6 years of F3 I have worked out in single digit temperatures and in ice and in snow and in lots of rain. Honestly the cold rain is the worse and that is what we had on this Saturday morning. It may have been the worse conditions because of the combination of cold and wet that just goes right through you, but here I am, 2 days later alive and well. Actually stronger because of the experience. In 6 years the best and hardest workouts were the ones in the worse weather and I’m better for it. I know others agree. Point is that one of our core principles is that all workouts are outside and that is not a tough guy thing but something to make you stronger. By getting to the AO, out of the car, in the workout you have told your mind and body you are in control. By pushing through the discomfort of the conditions, you can push through the discomfort of tough things in life like conversations and personalities and circumstances. By doing this over and over and over, confidence spills over in you and in your life. Stop making excuses and post. Hold someone accountable and they hold you and both of you will get better. Thank you Pusher and Mr. Clean for accountability and thank you PAX for showing up and supporting your Qs

I locked my keys in my truck and thank God I had my jacket and gloves!! Whew!!!

The Thang:

  • Warm Up!!!
  • Mosey up and down each of the overhang sidewalks for COP
  • Wall Sit with bearcrawls length of wall

  • Mosey across the street for 11’s
  • Derkins – bridging the river of water along the curbs
  • Bombjacks at top running through the puddles

To the Track

ladder work with 100 yard run between each
1 merkin = 10
2 squats = 18
3 lbcs = 24
4 bombjacks = 32
5 Burpees = 30
6 Freddys = 30
7 Diamonds = 32
8 lunges = 24
9 Moracan night clubs = 18
10 donkey kicks = 10

Mosey back to front of school middle school

YHC shared with the PAX a conversation I had with a friend who mentioned that the older he gets the more he adores his M and appreciates her. Even more than when they first met and dated he “adores” her. I told the PAX it was like a light bulb lit up in my head. We (the church) are the bride of Christ and he adores us from day one…..even through our mess and our tough stubborn times he loves us. As we come to Christ and grow in him and realize the love of the father…..we adore him more and more each day. This is why the relationship of marriage is so important because as we learn what it means to be husbands we also learn how our Lord adores us and we him to be better men each day.

Finish strong with Partners 2 rounds

  • Dying Cockroaches
  • 20 dips
  • 15 merkins
  • Big Boy sit ups
  • 25 Irkins
  • 20 Steps ups

BEYOND Badger – Passivity

Maximus offered me the opportunity to lead a BEYOND workout, and it only felt right to do it at The Badger… He told me to pick the topic and I got to work. I wanted to take it a step further since it was a BEYOND Badger… so instead of one long grueling workout, I chose a few. Makes sense, right?

My topic was Passive Leadership. Something I struggle with constantly. No matter how “great” I feel I am doing as a leader, I tend to slow down and mentally rest. I let my life lead itself and when I’m not behind the steering wheel, the wheels fall off.

Apathy/Indifference – feeling indifferent or lacking emotion
Passivity – accepting what happens without active response or resistance

Poor leadership has many faces… but passivity in my opinion is a main root of the issue.

COP (All Workouts Derived from the Exicon!)
11 of each for (Observed) Veteran’s Day
SSH
Sun Gods (Arm Circles)
Moroccan Night Clubs
Windmill
Hairy Rockettes (Reverse Windmill, Toes reach up to hands)
Tappy Taps
Carolina Dry Docks
Merkins
Peter Parkers
Calf Raises
Low Slow Squat

Al Gore’s in a circle while I talked.

Ephesians 5:25 – Husbands love your wives as Christ loves the church.

I made a vow at the time I proposed to my wife that I wouldn’t be the typical American male who is distant from his family and doesn’t love or support them if their needs aren’t being met. I was on fire at that point in my life, leading and loving like God designed me to do. I felt unstoppable at accomplishing a love that no man had ever felt. Then I started to get in the way…

The great part about the Honey Badger is we get to honor men who didn’t lead passively.

We finished the warm up and moseyed over to the badger den’s infamous pull up bars.

Ryan – Firefighter Hero WOD
5 Rds
7 Muscle UPS or Pull UPS/DIPS
21 Burpees

LBC’s while we waited for the group to finish. Gotta keep adding to the November count!

Drop down to Al Gore to keep the conversation going.

Somewhere along the way… I lost sight of my vow and decided that I wanted to pursue my own fulfillment over my wife’s. It ended up as you’d imagine. We fell away from each other while trying to conceive. I couldn’t think about her pain during the two years we tried, all I could think about was myself and how ready or not ready I was. We reached a point of pursuing fertility treatment – and by we I mean she decided and I didn’t really give any input. We were at the decision point to take hormone shots. Without consulting her or even thinking of her feelings, I backed out and decided for us to let it happen naturally. Needless to say I broke a lot of trust and I reaped the fruit of passive leadership. It was a hard fought battle to regain the trust I broke, but we made it back. All because I led apathetically.

Can you imagine how giving our all, all the time could have an impact? Would you rather be consistently good or inconsistently great?

Mosey to the track to take part in hero workout number two.

Griff
2 Rds
800 m run forward
400 m run backward

Pick up the six and run with him to the end. The guys planked while we did so.

We ran short so couldn’t do our third hero WOD, but I’m pretty sure everybody was okay with that. We moseyed back to COT for my message to come to a close.

Drop into Al Gore once more to finish the conversation.

I took the difficult time and raw relationship to heart, and was really helped by God and a few good men at my Church in MD. We conceived our daughter and that really helped bring us out of the pit. I vowed not to let our family growth become a wedge and would do my best to lead my wife through whatever comes next. That doesn’t mean I’ve been without issue. Things are constantly changing, and I have to remain in the lead for my wife and children’s sake. If I fail, their chances of failing increase exponentially. I need to keep my head up and lead in a way that will bear the right fruit for all.

Ephesians 5:33a – However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself

A few thoughts…
My life and how fast things change… my daughter will be four in five days. How did that happen? How did I blink and she get this old? Where did I fail? Where did I succeed? How does apathy/passivity cause you to miss things?

A lot of the things that take my focus away have nothing to do with my family. Work, friends, social media, keeping up with sports, golf, hobbies, drinking beer, music, news and politics. Some things take my family time away that are very productive. Church, volunteering at church, F3, working out. Some may have a positive impact on my family life but most of the time take away from my time with my family.

What’s more important?

End with LBCs x 16 IC until the clock struck 6:00.

19 PAX showed up. Welcome FNG BACONATOR!

Double Booked? Nope, Double Beatdown.

Through no fault of anyone that I’m aware, the original Q for the Hive was double booked. Since I know that guy, the PAX probably got off easy with me filling in. Or maybe not.

Disclaimer was disclaimed (didn’t notice that Punch List had brought an FNG, so I guess my extra extended disclaimers are good for something. Also gave the disclaimer that since this is a gear workout, there would not be much running.

NMM
I may have gotten some of the listed exercises or a few of the counts wrong when I was writing this down finally, but it’s basically all correct. I’m pretty sure if you were to go through this routine, it would be a pretty good beat down even if I missed a few things.

So here’s my thoughts lately about doing gear workouts. If it’s a gear workout, I’m pretty much going to stick with that and not too much running around. I’m pretty simple like that. Find a thing that works and stick with it. My basic KB workouts will be variants of what we did in this one. I figured out this little routine and it works for me. It seems to be a pretty good workout for everyone else too, usually.

F3 is like that for me. When I found out what this thing was all about and started posting, it was something that really just worked for me. I’m not trying to make it into something complicated, I’m just looking for that physical and mental push before the sun even comes up. Every day that I’m out there in the gloom with a bunch of like minded guys focused on accomplishing a single thing at a time, I get energized. If I’m the guy leading, good, but if not, that’s good too.

I see that carried out into our community, getting a bunch of like minded guys focused on accomplishing a single thing at a time. Sometimes that’s reading to kids after school. Sometimes it’s handing out turkeys. Sometimes it’s just running all day and night with a bunch of smelly guys. Sometimes it’s surrounding someone who is suffering physically or emotionally. For me that all starts in the gloom, many days of the week, surrounded by my Brothers…

Geronimo!
