9/11 Tribute

Sep‎ ‎12 at ‎7‎:‎40‎ ‎PM

Nine HIM showed up in the gloom to post and pay tribute to all of the people impacted by the events of 09/11/2001. Two mosey lines were formed throughout the workout to pay respect to the twin towers. Exercises were done in single counts of 9 then 11.

Moseyed over to the far parking lot to by the entrance to warm up:

1.       9 & 11 single count side straddle hops

2.       9 & 11 single count wind mills

3.       9 & 11 single count squats

4.       9 & 11 single count hillbilly walkers

5.       9 & 11 single count donkey kicks

6.       9 & 11 single count dancing bears

Moseyed off the school grounds to a parking lot up the hill.

1.       9 & 11 single count big boy sit ups in pairs.

2.       Bear crawled across the parking lot

3.       Curb planked our way back

4.       Lunges across the parking lot

5.       Bear crawled back

Moseyed further up the hill to see four cones setup for a workout called “Field of Dreams”. Mentioned what is more American than baseball, and Long Shanks responded football (I think I have to agree with that).

Field of Dreams – Split up into two groups. One person ran from cone to cone while the rest of the group uniformly did the same exercise. When everyone in the group had their turn at running, the exercise was switched.

–          1st Base – Burpees

–          2nd Base – Flutters

–          3rd Base – Squats

–          Home Plate – Side Straddle Hops

Brought everyone in to talk about the events of 9-11.

–         I think it is safe to say that all of us remember exactly where we were that morning. What we were doing. Who we were with. My own personal experience with 9-11 was taking one of the last path trains into the towers after the first plane struck the building. As myself and thousands of other people were running out of the building, one of the things that I will never forget is witnessing all of the first responders running in (fireman, policeman, EMT). What kind of courage and sacrifice that must have taken. I challenged everyone to pay that sacrifice forward in their own lives.

Moseyed back down the hill back towards the Colosseum. We stopped at the bottom of the hill and spoke about that day in more detail.

Moseyed further up the hill towards the school for some more burpees (it is September).

–          9 big boy sit ups

–          9 burpees

–          11 big boy sit ups

–          11 burpees

Moseyed over to the wall

–          9 count around the horn for some wall sits

–          11 count for balls to the wall

Moseyed back to COT for some prayers and praises.

Colosseum 9418

What a delicious swampy suckfest at The Coliseum today.  10 (real) men were brave enough to post today including two former nantans(DD, Pusher), a former #kotter (LULU), and a former #D1(Crab Cakes). Who among us doesn’t love a dirty McDeuce?

YHC came in on 2 wheels this morning but was ready to go disclaiming that which needs to be disclaimed and off we went for a yog/mosey where we learned that McGuyver still hates me from a Sunday run where I may have underestimated the mileage.  In the back of GHMS our freshly minted black top served as our warming grounds.  Various heartpumpers: SSH, Squats, LBC, Flutters got it going.  Oddly I thought we would have a Chippendale this morning but everyone kept their shirt on. looking at you Jedi.  Making an appearance in our warmup was the always welcome 10- down burpee count sprinkled in.  got down to 7 before we changed direction to a new section of our Roman fortress.

The THANG

Dirty McDeuce- 3 exercises, 12 reps, 4 rounds.  Usually Upper, Middle, Lower but Q’s call.

  • Merkin, LBC, Squat
  • Carolina Dry Dock, Dying Cockroach, Lunge
  • Wide arm Merkins, Big Boy Situps, Jumpsquat
  • Diamond Merkin, Freddie Mercury, Apolo Oh-no

Spliced in some more burpees with 6 through 4 down.

Mosey to back parking for suicides, 5 points, 3 burpees each.

curb action with 60 seconds each of alt shoulder plank walk and steps ups.

Finish with Mary and the rest of our Burpees: 3 through 1 down

Naked Man Moleskin

Good to see Rebel this morning.  Strong, fit and at front of pack today in Dirty McD.  No question he could beat the 55th ranked tennis player unlike Federer.  Coliseum regulars JWoww, and Objection crushed as usual.  McGuyver lead from the front in his silent assassin way while LuLu  still had enough breath to explain the origin of his name.

We got in 70 burpees on the day to help our totals for the September of 1000 burpee challenge and support Double D in his efforts running in the NYC Marathon for Let Me Run.  If you finish with more than or less than 1000, pay up friends.  Lets financially support DD for this great program,

Twas a great morning.  Aye!

The mid-40’s Dynamic Duo Q

Thanks to Smuggler for letting two crazy mid-40’s team up like never before into the Dynamic Duo. Lots of fun and wetness out there in the gloom. We focused today on encouraging one another and pushing through (the pain). Over 50% of this workout was aimed at strengthening your core with some endurance training to finish things off.  Speaking for Old Bay and myself – we had a blast (and this was no easy workout)! We hung around for some “coffeeteria” as well afterwards. I counted the total number of burpees and it was between 65-72 depending on what you went for. Special thanks to Wild Thing for making the trip to Tega Cay and demonstrating superb burpee form.

Warm-up:

DYNAMIC STRETCHING:

Jog – 1 Min

High Knees – 30 Seconds

Butt Kickers – 30 Seconds

Toy Soldiers – 30 Seconds

Lateral Shuffles – 30 Seconds (each side)

Lateral Lunges – 10 (5 each side)

Low semi-slow Squats – 12

Alternating Forward Lunges  – 10 (5 each side)- We rotated our torsos towards the side of the leg that is in front for each movement.

Low diamond Merkins – 15 single set

Single Leg Toe touches with other leg going back – 10 (5 each side)

Peter Pointers – 10

Rolling Crucifix – 5X each side

Table Twists – 5X each side

THE THANG:

I talked about the Nasty 7s that I had done with Sasquatch before and at an impromptu Q at The Ranch, but decided not to do them because of wetness from the night before so I gave the option. Most decided to do a jog to each corner in the basketball court and 4 burpees at each corner. Total was 20 here. I will have to formally teach the Nasty 7 at another time.

Stacked Feet/Staggered Hands Merkin (switch every 4) – 60 secs

Banana Rolls – 120 secs – Did with coupon for 60 of those secs

Leaning Crescent Lunges with coupon – 1 min with and 1 min without

Sphinx Merkin – 60 secs max reps

Bow to Boat – 120 secs – I was nice and we did not do with a coupon

Side Lunge and raise coupon to put on the imaginary “shelf” – 45 secs each direction

Prison Cell Burpee (boy these were fun!)- 60 secs

Side Hip Raise – 30 secs each side

High Plank to 6 inches Run (this one really stunk)- 60 secs

Superman Banana – 60 secs

Yellow rope hoppers – 60 secs

Hillbilly Walkers – 30 secs

Imperial Walkers – 30 secs

300 Secs of Abs:

Upper Circle LBCs – 30 secs each direction; 5 sec rest between each

Twisting Pistons – 30 secs

Alligator Walks  (on forearms) 60 secs;

Canoe Crunch – 30 secs

Slow LBC and Twist (Crunch and Twist) – 60 secs

Regular Plank to the end – 60 secs

Immediate transition into my partner in crime’s Q, the infamous Old Bay:

1) Bent ladder with Morning Wood on the field and Burpees at the entrance to the parking lot. Run between a burpee and the field was backwards and a side shuffle left/right to a distant cone where Morning Wood (Turkish getup) occurred and repeat. This was taxing!

2) Catch-me-if-you-can on path around fields. Exercise was Merkins/Butt-kickers.

3) 7 extra burpees

4) SSH – 15

COT: Key items: Prayers for the Ms and praise for Delta’s great news.

BB for #Beyond at the #Ranch – 8-23-18

17 PAX joined YHC for something different at the Beyond edition of The Ranch. In the spirit of Beyond, I wanted to try something that would push the PAX beyond their comfort zone. Something that would require some mental toughness, perseverance, and grit.

Inspired by this video from SealFit Academy, I thought we would test the mental veracity of our PAX with a 45 minute plank.

Here are the rules:

  • Hold plank (in various forms called by the Q – regular, elbow, left arm high, right arm high, honeymooner, downward dog) for the full 45 minutes of the workout, starting immediately at 5:15, ending at 6:00.
  • If plank was exited, PAX would have to do 5 burpees as a penalty and join back in the plank. This became 5 hand release burpees for the second half of the workout.
  • Q would read an inspiring quote re: mental toughness & perseverance every 2 minutes throughout the workout.
  • PAX were encouraged to partner up at the beginning of the workout and rely on each other to push through the pain.

Quotes:

  1. “Mental toughness is spartanism with qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication. It is fearlessness, and it is love.” ―Vince Lombardi
  2. “Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory.” ―Bill Russell
  3. “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” ―Thomas Jefferson
  4. “It’s when the discomfort strikes that they realize a strong mind is the most powerful weapon of all.” ―Chrissie Wellington
  5. “Throw away all weakness. Tell your body that it is strong, tell your mind that it is strong and have unbounded faith and hope in yourself.” ―Swami Vivekananda
  6. “Strong minds suffer without complaining; weak minds complain without suffering.” ―Lettie Cowman
  7. “Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will.” ―Mahatma Gandhi
  8. “Your toughness is made up of equal parts persistence and experience. You don’t so much outrun your opponents as outlast and outsmart them, and the toughest opponent of all is the one inside your head.” ―Joe Henderson
  9. “Make sure your worst enemy doesn’t live between your own two ears.” ―Laird Hamilton
  10. “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” ―Marcus Aurelius
  11. “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them―a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.” ―Muhammad Ali
  12. Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.- Walter Elliott
  13. Grit is that ‘extra something’ that separates the most successful people from the rest. It’s the passion, perseverance, and stamina that we must channel in order to stick with our dreams until they become a reality. – Travis Bradberry
  14. ”I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature.”- John D Rockefeller
  15. ”Perseverance is also key to success in any endeavor, but without perseverance in combat, there can be no victory.”- Jocko Willink
  16. “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” -Thomas Edison

I am not the most eloquent with my back-blasts and I am usually to the point with posting the workout, add some words and being done, however since I can’t get Italian Job to write this up and Double D challenged the PAX to think of one word to represent CSAPN, I think that is the best way to document this convergence.

Lovely Trees and Grass

7 Pax weren’t scared off by Jekyll’s twitter warnings that there would be lots of pain and grass (and most assuredly not the dry kind).  Weather was low 70’s and humid. Speculation swirled that the low attendance was due to F3Dads camp and the “Run Your A– Off August” contingent that had likely posted to TheYard.  But what we lacked in quantity, we more than made up for in quality of Pax.
YHC had the first half, so I issued the disclaimer and then asked everyone close their eyes for a brief period of time.  Upon opening, pax were remind that the word of the month is “presence”, and to think about where their mind was during the 30 seconds of eyes being closed.  Did their mind stay present, in the here-and-now?  Or where they thinking about the past, or the future, or just some other place or problem?
We moseyed to one of the Spring parking lots for some warmup:
  • SSH x25
  • Mountain Climbers x15
  • Dips x10
  • Peter Parkers x10
Mosey to row of trees across 160 (beside old 21).  Pax found a small stack of cones at the “first” tree, and we stopped there for a few moments.  YHC discussed more on “presence”.  The exercises with the trees went as follows.  By the way, YHC stole this idea from CSPAN who did this about 3 years ago at this same location (and a different topic).
  • Top cone pick from stack.
  • Pax held Al Gore while YHC read a question regarding “presence” (from the word of the month document).
  • Exercise read from the cone and pax performed one rep of the exercise at the first tree
  • Pax ran to 2nd tree and did 2 reps, then 3rd tree (3 reps), 4th tree (4 reps), and so on.
  • At 12th tree, after 12 reps done, pax planked until 6 arrived.
  • Together we ran back to the first tree.
We repeated thru 4 exercises before we ran out of time.  Here where the exercise and question pairs.
  1. Flying Squirrels – What memories do you have of your parents and your time with them? Were they fully present? How did their presence or lack thereof make you feel?
  2. Squats – Do you have any memories of a special person in your life that was fully present? How did that person make you feel?
  3. Crab Jacks – What distracts you most from being present?
  4. Run Stance Switch – How have you learned to be more present in your relationships? What have you learned about being present with God?
Quick follow up thoughts about “presence”, then hand off to Jekyll.
Mosey back to WEP, to the bottom of the hill famous for ladders, so that we could do….(drumroll please) some ladders.  But first, we did a review of the 5 core principles.  Just for fun, Jekyll had us do 5 burpees after the first principle recited, then 4 after the 2nd, 3, after the 3rd, then 2, then 1, and then back to 5 burpees.
The ladder work then began:
  1. Ladder 1: Squats and Donkey Kicks (to/from 11) with normal run up and down hill
  2. Ladder 2: LBCs and Merkins (to/from 7) with uphill run being backwards
  3. Ladder 3: pax choice:  American Hammers (thanks Mary Lou) and Bomb Jacks (thanks BandCamp) (to/from 7) with uphill climb being bear crawls
And just when we thought we were all completely smoked, Jekyll wrapped it up with 3 rounds of Makhtar N’Diayes (10x, 10x, 15x), with plank series in between each set.
Naked Man Moleskin
Very strong showing by all pax today. As I mentioned at the workout and on Twitter following, Jekyll did not let up as we neared the end of the workout.  Rather, with 5 minutes left, he gathered us to encourage a strong finish.  It certainly was not what any of us wanted to hear, but it’s what we needed to hear, and we are all better for it.
Long Shanks earned extra credit by running in and running out to the workout.  The workout mileage itself was north of 2.5 miles according to Strava.  T-claps also goes to Youts for digging deep to finish strong.

August 2018 – Impact Convergence

On the morning of Friday, August 3rd, 61 Men of High Impact joined Homebrew, Deacon, & Jiffy for some #Convergence work.

For this Round Robin of Pain, we separated the PAX into 3 groups and rotated to each station for 12 minutes.

Station 1 – Jiffy:

He had setup a row of 4 cones in the bank parking lot and ran the PAX through the following exercises.

  • 5 Burpees OYO
  • Straight suicides
  • Lunge walk, 10 squats at each cone
  • Bear crawl, 10 merkins at each cone
  • 15 American Hammers in cadence
  • Suicides with 3 Bomb Jacks at each cone
  • Broad jump to each cone, 5 lunges each leg
  • Crab walk, 5 diamond merkins at each cone
  • 15 LBC’s in cadence

Station 2 – Deacon:

Find a partner

One partner runs to Pizza Hut and back while the other does a series of exercises until the team does merkins (100x), Squats (200x), LBCs (300x).

  • Partner Drills (Round 1) – Partner Big Boy Sit Ups (15x for 2 rounds), Partners Push Ups (15x for 2 rounds), Partner Leg Lifts (15x for 2 rounds)
  • Partner Drills (Round 2 if time permits) – Partner Wheel Barrels to each side of the parking lot (2x for 2 rounds), Partner Ski Jumps (15x for 2 rounds)

Station 3 – Homebrew:

4 Corners and Burpee Roll

PAX were divided into four groups, with one group being sent to each corner. Complete all exercises listed at your corner then bear crawl to the center. At the center was a large foam die. One PAX would roll the die for the group to determine how may burpees everyone would do. Amazingly, only one 6 was rolled all morning – I’m lookin at you IceT. Once the burpees were completed, crab walk from the center to the next corner going clockwise. Rinse and repeat until all corners are done or time runs out.

  • Corner 1
    • 40 SSH
    • 40 Plank Jacks
    • 40 Mountain Climbers
    • 20 Crab Cakes
  • Corner 2
    • 15 Merkins
    • 30 CDD
    • 15 Wide Arm Merkins
    • 5 Kraken Burpees
  • Corner 3
    • 10 Donkey Kicks
    • 50 Calf Raises
    • 40 Monkey Humpers
    • 20 Lunges
  • Corner 4
    • 10 Big Boy Situps
    • 20 Hello Dollys
    • 30 Dying Cockroaches (double count)
    • 10 Boxcutters

There were prayer requests for family, school returning and those with health needs.

Cakeboss took us out in prayer.

Great job, Homebrew, Deacon, & Jiffy!

“The Seven” workout is back

Thank you Jekyll for the opportunity to lead.

We started our great morning with a mosey around the drop off lane followed by some warm up exercises, windmills, moroccan night clubs, low slow squats, merkins and lunges, we run another lap around the drop off lane for some high knees, butt kickers and toy soldiers followed by a short mosey to the back of the school where I had previously setup the pain stations.

The sevens is a workout that consists of 7 exercises with 7 reps each, these are the exercises:

7 Carolina Dry Docks

7 dumbbell swings

7 sledgehammer swing each side

7 worst merkin ever

7 squat jumps

7 biceps curls each arm

7 tire flips

after completing one circuit we took a lap around the parking lot, rinse and repeat; after the second time we took a break for some captain thor (1 big boy sit up and 4 american hammers; 2 big boy sit ups and 8 american hammers, all the way to 10 BBSU and 40 AH) we had to take another brake after the 8th time to stretch our backs with some superman exercises, then back to finish up captain thor. Lots of mumble chatter about tail bones and glutes but we went back to our sevens.

One more circuit and we finished strong with some additional LBC’s, more mumblu chatting about tail bones and glutes at this point. Thank you everyone for helping to load the props in my truck.

Everyone did a great job, this is the first time that my timing with the props doesn’t work for everyone, we had to do some planks and SSH while waiting to flip the tire; I’m definitely fixing that for my next Q.

We went back to COT for announcements, prayers and praises.

We talked about F3 dads camp and lifted prayers for our families and our fellow PAX Brainiac in Lexington SC who’s having a knee surgery this week.

Tinsel OUT!
